Good info Richard I always have wondered how close there measurement was too I have had good luck running VP but they now offer kinda odd size bottles like to mix 6 gallons or something 🤯never seen a 6 gallon can 🤦♂️🤣
Have been running ~45:1 red armor for years, and my saws seem to love it. The stuff woke up a blower and one of my trimmers! I get the 16 oz squeezy bottles like you were describing, with 93 octane ethanol free, and in 20 years i've never lost an engine.
Trust but verify my friend. I was truly shocked that it was short. I poured two "one hit" bottles into a measuring cup and ended up with less than 5oz. That's bad math.
Like I’ve told you without shaking my bottle of Schaefer’s there was some leftover thicker grey substance leftover after emptying a quart. I’ve since been shaking them before mixing
I still prefer rotating saber with a gallon of RA every 5 gallons or so. BUT I ran several gallons worth of gas mixed with VP and it seemed to be great oil. Nice and clean burning. Smell was ok. I -do- like scavenging a few empty baby bottles from work to refill with a dose of saber for carry. Never take quarts of expensive oil into the field lol. You'll puncture the bottle every time.
I always had suspicions of those small bottles being on the underfilled side. Whenever I used the small bottles, I made sure to mix it with like .8 gallons of gas instead of the full gallon. Looks like I wasn't being paranoid with that one. I wound up buying a gallon of Husqvarna XP + a few months ago on sale so now I just use a 32oz measuring cup I have.
This is an excellent video. I am actually totally surprised and made a false assumption in the past. I have been buying Red Armor in larger bottles and transferring to the ECHO squeeze bottle and mixing at 40:1. Thank you for doing this video. Very interesting.
I’ve been buying the VP 16 oz for a few years from TSC. It’s not as thick as red armor, but is a lot cheaper! Been working great for me. Worked out to similar cost for other premium mixes I can get.
Really like your oil videos. I obsess on the oil. I am gonna to get rid of the Stihl Ultra. I bought a quart of Amsoil Saber and I am going to mix 40-1. I have watched just about every chainsaw Channel on RUclips about the oil and you have really impressed me with your oil analysis videos and the tear downs. I have a Stihl MS440 and I had a failure on the crank rod bearing. I'm not sure if the Stihl Ultra caused it, but I know it is not gonna cause the next problem! Keep up the good work!
Exactly Richard!! And these same people that buy these small bottles look at me like I have 3 eyes when I say I pay 40 bucks for a 2 quart jug of Maxima K2.
I've been using Red Armor for a few years now. I mix approximately 2.6 ounces with 3 ounces of VP Octanium octane booster and 1 ounce of Marvel Mystery Oil for every gallon of 91 non ethanol. I burn about 6 gallons of mix a year. Never had any problems and every saw that I have opened up after running that mix has a very heavy oil film on all parts but no excessive smoke.
I totally agree with you about the economics of larger amounts vs the convince of smaller. Just a question: in your opinion who’s 2-cycle oil is best, and why. Have you found any place where there is a valid study that determines this? Thank you.
Good info Richard! Once i got a proper mixing cup i started noticing these things. Really solidified my trust in that power blend gold. Bottle says 50:1, fully drained the bottle will get you to 44:1
I run Penzoil Marine 2 stroke oil at 32/1 and it has worked great for me. I buy it a gallon at a time. I use a baby bottle to measure with. The last gallon I purchased was about $22.00. I do not have excessive oil residue showing at the exhaust.
No shit..dirty bastards rippin us off..good vid richard..def didnt see that comin..i do like the vp..i run it 45-1 n still lil puddle in bottom end..pretty clean as well..thanks for sharin..
My grass trimmer & 4 chainsaws are 1994-2005 vintage. I mix 40:1 for all of them. I mix a precisely measured gallon of gas & 3.2 ounces of 2-stroke oil. Both the gas (0% ethanol) & oil are measured before I dump them into my gas can. I don''t have gas related issues even if an item sits for a couple months. I cut/burn firewood, & my stuff gets used.
Good video.! Your videos got me into test 2 stroke oils and fuels. Why I think those premixed bottles were short on oil was because of emissions and less smoke. This is why i measure and mix my own fuel. What I have found this year about most 2 stroke premixed ethanol free fuel cans I found the are putting ethanol in there even the big name brands but VP seems good. You should maybe try testing for ethanol in the fuel. I did it was an eye opener many of my saw problems were fixed.
You are so correct all these chainsaw companies only make chainsaw the don’t make oil just like all these Bread labels in the grocery store. in the made in same place just different name and formula, that’s all
I can get Amsoil Saber for about $15/qt. I was buying Red Armor at my local Home Depot for $13/pt. I think I’ll be going back to Saber that I ran for years before getting into Red Armor.
@@ironleatherwood. Both oils are pretty much top of the line, but Red Armor is nearly twice the price when comparing same quantities. Correction. I just now checked the HD site. A 16oz bottle of Red Armor is $16.97 while Amsoil Saber is $17 for 32oz. So why not get twice as much oil for basically the same price?
@@AnarchAngel1I’ll keep it just a little richer mixed at 40:1. I use the same can of fuel in my three vintage Lawn-Boys as well as my trimmers, blower, mini tiller, and chainsaw.
Wow! Thanks for that. Aside from VP Racing shorting us on the small bottles, what do you think of it? You cracked me off Stihl oil a while back and I started running VP at 40:1 a while back.
The last Schaeffer’s 7000 TC-W3 I purchased was $7.65 a quart at an auto parts store! A gallon of red armor from a hardware store was purchase for $56. I use a mixing cup.
Wow, tho I haven't purchased any "single shot" oil bottles in 12+ years I also assumed they'd be on the heavy side! Add to that those who just fill their old bloated cans to the used to be 1gal line... getting pretty thin😬 I've noticed the discrepancy in the 16oz red armor squeeze bottle. Has marks for 2.6 and 3.2oz but if you accurately measure 3.2oz and pour back into the measuring part of bottle, it's marked noticeably lower than should be. Maby what we're really leary about isn't 50:1 but infact 55+:1. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video with us!👍🏻
Great information…I buy the 5 liter (which is close to 5qt up here) for about the same as those 12 bottle “deals” The only bigger scam is the pre-mixed fuel at $65 per gallon…when I mix I use Stabil fuel stabilizer, a good oil and 94 octane gas and I do it for 10% the cost (1/10th😉) of the canned gas. So not sure if it’s convenience or just marketing…but math isn’t that hard 😉👍
I noticed this years ago. I did the same exact test as you did. From what I remember Stihl orange bottle was dead on at 2.6 oz. The husky xp+ oil was a bit short. I had some old bottles of the stihl hp super in the black bottle and they were about 2.2 oz. Opti-2 packets are dead accurate too. Both the small and big packets of oil.
This is the reason that I buy 1qt bottles, and use a ratio-rite to measure the oil. I also measure my gas, on account of not trusting gasoline pump counters to be accurate either. It's seems to me to be another case of shrink-flation, to me. Just like candy makers producing smaller candy bars (and even raising the price, too).
Ran through my last 6 quarts and haven't ordered any yet. I don't have a local option for it. I may switch to Saber. I really like it. Absolutely nothing wrong with Schaeffers tho.
I only use 2 gal of premix per year and use the small bottles of oil. I pour the oil in the empty gas can, put slightly less than 2 gal of gas in, maybe 1.8, directly from the gas pump. When i get home i pour some of the mix back in the oil bottle and rinse it out back into my gas can to get all the oil out i can. Again, im a property owner, not a professional.
Totally different situation Richard, but I got caught with aspen 4, it's alkalyte fuel that I mix with the hp super. It was quite short of 5 liters, it's known to evaporate if its not stored correctly like in the store. I'm guessing could the 2 stroke be the same? Interesting Richard..
Up here in canada we go for the snowmobile oil, if it can handle 300hp, 3hp shouldnt be a problem lol. Currently running ipone snow2 , made for air cooled sleds.
quart of Amsoil Saber is $17 plus tax and shipping, makes 12.6 gallons @50-1. best stuff I've found, cheaper than Red Armor and I believe better. use 75ML to gallon which is almost exactly 50:1 ratio.
I would've never encountered this, but good to know. I've always used a squeezy bottle with the double lid, squeeze plenty up to the built in measure and then pour that out into a small medicine measuring cup using that as an accurate measure. I then fill a measuring jug with the quantity of straight fuel I want to mix up, and pour the medicine cup amount in, then I throw the medicine cup in the measuring jug and swish it around to mix the fuel/oil together and rinse out the medicine cup all at the same time. I only ever need about 1/4L - 1/2L at a time, so I only mix up what I will use on the day, and only store any leftovers for about a week or two if there's ever any left. Saves wastage, ensures accuracy and cleans my medicine cup ready for next time😂
I bought a few of the small Saber packets for a 100-1/gallon from the Stihl dealer since I wanted to try it and couldn’t find anyone else selling quarts other than Dominator if I remember correctly. I believe I paid $3/packet originally but last time I stopped by they must have wanted to get rid of them as they were covered in a layer of dust and sold me the last dozen packets for $1/each. I’m running 2 packets with the 1 1/4 gallons my jug holds whatever that comes out to be. I was running Red Armor but figured I would give the Saber a try. It’s a toss up whichever is better but all my Stihls run better than the swamp water I was using. It’s crazy how much easier everything is to start.
I buy the 2.6oz bottles but when I go to mix up a gallon, I open the bottle and let it pour in the can the night before I get gas. Let it drain overnight. 😁 Good video Richard! I'm still using "pond water"! 😅
@richardflagg3084 lol. Been busy getting ready for the Michigan firearm season. Then getting the snowmobiles ready for race season! But I check in every so often.
As a carver I use a lot of fuel. I've been running Motul 800 measured with a graduated cylinder like yours since I saw Hotsaws101's analysis of 2 stroke oils years ago. I always pour the oil in the fuel, shake, then pour a bit back into the graduated cylinder and add this rinse to make sure my ratio is exact. Looks like I can't get ethanol-free fuel anymore here is Communist Canada so I may have to buy VP ethanol free now. $$$$
I noticed the same thing with Husqvarna xp. The 2.6 oz bottles only contain 2 oz. I’ve inquired with Husqvarna customer service and they are putting me off to my regional service center. BS. 2 oz in a gallon of gas gives you 65:1. Not good.
I got into Motul 800 offroad and I'm cool with it. They say 50:1 and I tend to believe them. If it's cold outside, that thing barely drips out of the bottle. It is that thick.
Maybe some settling of contents may occur? LOL How much fuel stabilizer is mixed with that oil? Then what is the actual dilution for actual oil? Some of the mixture is fuel stabilizer so dilution is actually more because not all of the dyed liquid is actually oil, some of it is fuel stabilizer. Right?
Nothing crazy about shaking up a bottle of mix oil that's been sitting awhile I do it all the time because they do start to separate. As far as those little pre measured bottles are concerned I came across that nasty "short on amount" surprise year's ago when buying new equipment and being forced to get the 6 pack of oil for warranty. when I looked in the bottle it was only half full so being the suspicious type I am I opened all 6 bottles well holey shit! every one was filled at different amount's. In my market their supposed to be 100ml most where 60ml or less so if you mixed at that ratio you'd get something like 75:1 So took it back to dealer to "show and tell" and was promptly told it was my fault "if your going to mess with the oil measure you'll void your warranty" by a very pissed off service manager. I then grabbed a new unopen oil pack off his sales shelf and opened it in front of him with yes lot's of yelling at this point of "what the hell you do you think your doing" in the mean time a couple of parts guys and customers took a peek in the bottles I opened with some holey shit he's right coming from them, but this jackass just grabbed the hole thing threw it in a trash bin by the counter and said the company would never do that to the shock of everyone in the place. Of course I was told to leave and consider my warranty void from this point on, to which he was told back if the rest of that company was an asshole like him then I was better off not dealing with them in the future. Sorry for the long winded rant but you brought back some now funny memoires but not so funny at the time. Anyways when I got home I filled those little bottles with one of the other ones and six of them ended up with 5 so there you have it; sorry again Richard take care.
Both are good oils and I've tested them here on the channel at 50:1. I think the Power Blend Gold is a touch better. XP+ would have done better at 40:1.
Never did I understand why you have those shots over there to mix in a us gallon .... is that even worth mixing 😂. We tend to do 5ltrs at min here in uk, so shots of 100ml or go a bit more for higher ratio, most just buy the 4/5 litre cans of oil🤷🏻♂️
So they short-change people…. About par for the course, any more. Good to use a graduated cylinder to determine how much oil you will add… Those bottles are enough for a bit more than two quarts of fuel….
Whoda thunk otherwise ? We have seen for YEARS the bean counting penny pinchers cut and slash everything no matter the horrendous outcome - just a few more cents times a multi million and the CEO and COOs and toptier get their multi million dollar bonuses uplifted AGAIN ! It's very, very important... that they get another new yacht and sports car and you get the shaft, you burn up your saw, and you buy another one !
Hi Rich, always enjoy your 2-cycle oil videos. Thebig box stores cater to the general population that uses a new saw for about 20mins and then throws it on the garage floor or in the box it came in until the spring garage sale. I have two brands that I run in all my 2T equipment, and like you I have a lot. I run Motul 800-2T and Amsoil Saber and buy it by the gallon and mix my own at 40:1. I have a special gas can for the Motul and use that for mainly for my big saws over 70CC that tend to be worked hard and run hot. The saber is a bit cheaper, but quality is there and I do trust their oils, although my only verification is the fact that I still run an old Homelite Super -2 that I’ve had since I was about 10 that, that’s over 45 years now, that my Dad taught me to cut on. Of course my My Dad was not big on oil types, and I can attest that he used outboard 2 stroke oil because we had it for the boat. We didn’t have the money for that fancy stuff, but we did what we could. Nowadays, I take care of the power saws that take care of me. I use the Ratio-Rite mixer, simply because it’s so easy to clean. Thanks for the video.
In the comments here, someone in the packaging business chimed in and said by volume they are allowed a plus or minus tolerance in the filling process. It's an industry standard based on a percentage. How he explained it made sense. He also gave some math to support that the contents of the bottle are "in tolerance". I think I'll stick to saving a couple of bucks and measuring my own from a quart bottle.
Good info Richard I always have wondered how close there measurement was too

Lawsuit and retirement! 😂
Just have a very very expensive lawyer lol
I buy the 2.6oz bottles but when I go to mix up a gallon, I open the bottle and let it pour in the can the night before I get gas. Let it drain overnight. 😁 Good video Richard! I'm still using "pond water"! 😅
Nice to have you back "in the fold"
@richardflagg3084 lol. Been busy getting ready for the Michigan firearm season. Then getting the snowmobiles ready for race season! But I check in every so often.
I’ve used Echo oil a long time. Works great
I have measured out the orange bottle stihl in a small beaker. 80ml for the one gallon bottle.
The cost alone is disturbing.
That's putting it lightly. We've gotten spoiled on pre-packaged products
That’s why I mix my own. Use red armour for years. Consider how much they bottle and how much they save.
Do you mix your amzoil saber 40:1 as well i do just wondering if its to stouut which i buy the 32oz bottles
Good videos!
Great video buddy
So most people have been running their saws at about 55 to 1.
Motul 800 here, love that shit...
I noticed the same thing with Husqvarna xp. The 2.6 oz bottles only contain 2 oz. I’ve inquired with Husqvarna customer service and they are putting me off to my regional service center. BS. 2 oz in a gallon of gas gives you 65:1. Not good.
Horse Hockey!!
I mix 32/1 with my own measuring cup, cylinders are expensive oil is cheap!
foul plugs? carbon build up? thats rich for modern day saws....
@@medjoolmakerA little more oil fractionally is ok.
@@medjoolmaker 026 big bore pro , 036 pro and 038 mag 2
@richardflagg3084 what are your top 3 oils and ratios for them please? I am wanting to run my Stihl Kombi, blower and saw at the best!
I have watch few videos. Is important to mention the flash point of oil. I used to use redline i went with R50
BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE! Are there 32 oz in a quart? 🤣
Lol😮😮😮😮
I like the graduated cylinder and a high school dropout cylinder at the beginning
I got into Motul 800 offroad and I'm cool with it. They say 50:1 and I tend to believe them.
If it's cold outside, that thing barely drips out of the bottle. It is that thick.
Not surprised..always figured
I promise, I was shocked.
i always just rinse my bottles out with gas when mixing so i dont worry about leaving any behind
I bought a gallon of amsoil saber for like 60+ than buying it in smaller amounts for the money in long run.
Good stuff
Maybe some settling of contents may occur? LOL
How much fuel stabilizer is mixed with that oil?
Then what is the actual dilution for actual oil?
Some of the mixture is fuel stabilizer so dilution
is actually more because not all of the dyed liquid
is actually oil, some of it is fuel stabilizer. Right?
I just pour little gas I to it after bottle is empty and shake it them pour into the rest to speed up waiting and no waist
Fluid ounces is a unit of VOLUME not WEIGHT. A gallon is also a unit of volume.
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
Wich one do you think is better.. Husky Xp+ or echo power blend gold? Due to the viscosity and overall.. Thnx
Both are good oils and I've tested them here on the channel at 50:1. I think the Power Blend Gold is a touch better. XP+ would have done better at 40:1.
@@richardflagg3084 would echo power blend gold be good for M-tronic saw.. And what ratio do you suggest?
@@gravitylooseYes and 40:1
im guessing thats one of the reasons on alot of 2.6 bottles they dont have a measure gage on the side of most of the bottles.
I always put a splash of gas into the oil bottle and rinse it out into the can.
I use the Schaeffers 9000 that stuff is awesome. I think it's thicker that the 7000 mabe. I bought a gallon it should last me a couple years.
$4.99 each? That’s why I buy qts of oil and use a measuring ratio cup. I can by a qt of Lucas for $12 and that will make like 15 gal of premix.
Yeh, been buying Stihl oil for years in bulk & measuring it myself...¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I Buy 1Gallon Container of Stens Shield Synthetic Blend Oil And Mix it Myself 15.99 Lasts Me a Couple Years 😀😇😀
Have you tested the motul 800? Thats what i use at 32:1 and was wondering if that was too much oil?
Motul 800 is good stuff. Don't change.
It’s not excessive as long as the equipment is tuned for it. I do that exact same thing to MY equipment!
Good to use a graduated cylinder to determine how much oil you will add…
Those bottles are enough for a bit more than two quarts of fuel….
Just pour your oil like your whiskey and you're good is my motto
That's good advice!!!
I’ve got old homelite bottles that don’t have a lot in them
Never run anything at 50:1. That is EPA thing. Run a minimum of 40:1 and tune your carb for it.
How much of a difference is that few ml making on the companies bottom line over millions of bottles.
IKR
@@richardflagg3084 Then my mind dances around the edge of a crazy deep rabbit hole wondering what dark secrets that money is funding.
Red armor I use the 1 gallon bottles but everything else I get big bottles
Whoda thunk otherwise ? We have seen for YEARS the bean counting penny pinchers cut and slash everything no matter the horrendous outcome - just a few more cents times a multi million and the CEO and COOs and toptier get their multi million dollar bonuses uplifted AGAIN ! It's very, very important... that they get another new yacht and sports car and you get the shaft, you burn up your saw, and you buy another one !
So we need to buy 1 quart of 2 stroke oil, and measure our own amount. The single hitters are not accurate.
I don’t buy those Littel bottles I only buy 32 oz because I get more for the money .
Surprised you don't have a ratio rite..cup..?
I'm a high tech redneck....
more like 66/1 15ml per litre instead of 20ml per litre
You “getum” Richard. I get a much bigger container myself.
Yessir!!!
Yes, three of those stinking bottles in *two* gallons of gas.
Spendy stuff….
I'm guessing the mtg are claiming bottle & oil weight. Or they're helping the equipment mtg kill your gear
