Great hack/ workaround! I've always been amused by the fact that smartphones will allow you to basically record till either the battery or storage runs out but professional/ prosumer cameras wouldn't budge on this - I could understand if this is a heat issue on some cameras but it seemed like an odd problem once the technology had progress in each generation.

not sure if its a bit of a myth but I remember hearing it be about something like the import tax of a video camera being higher, and that definition being partly based on video recording limits

@@shruggiexo Apparently it is. Something to do with a different import tax bracket for camcorders and cameras that would record above 30 min count as one.
I'm just very amused that given the price of DSLR or EVIL cameras to begin with, that manufacturers didn't just roll that tax in and just allow for it.

Thanks! Yes, in fact it hasn't been manufacturer's limitations this whole time. I'm very thankful that newer cameras no longer have this limitation, but until I have all newer gear, I'll still be using this workaround.

Right, and considering how cheap consumer camcorders are (that don’t have a record limit), how expensive was the tax?!?

@@blytheandkarry Not too sure which it is but apparently it's either 4.9% or 14% based on what I could find.
Thing is, it's only EU that had it. Which means camera makers could have just nerfed cameras sold in EU and left the rest of the world with cameras that would do more than 30min (assuming they didn't run into other limitations like file size or sensor overheating issues).

How do you test the buffer of your camera and also will it vary with different types of cards?

The buffer only plays a role if you are shooting high-speed continuous bursts. Typically most modern cameras have a buffer of somewhere around 25-75 shots. Although the exact number for each camera will also vary widely depending on ISO.
The camera’s buffer acts as temporary storage until it can write all of the data to the memory card. So while the buffer is a fixed amount of storage, it will free up much more quickly (or not be utilized at all) if you have a faster card.
