Seger knew that young male radio listeners would hear "They do respect her butt", instead of the actual lyrics -- it was an intentional pun. Bob Seger's Come to Poppa is a MUST.
I worked as a reporter for a major metropolitan newspaper and actually got to meet and talk to Bob Seger. Some stars are full of themselves, and don't have time for "little people." Bob Seger is different. He's one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet in my life. Kind, generous and caring. Treated me like gold. Bonus? I love his music. Great reaction. Please do more Bob Seger!
I was utterly privileged to happen to be in Fort Lauderdale (I'm from UK) in I think 1984 and to see Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. If I wasn't at that point, from that point on I was a a stone cold solid Bob Seger fan and still am.
It's not an either/or situation. He's saying that they respect her as a powerful/professional woman but at the same time can appreciate that she has *ahem* other attributes that are worthy of admiration.
You really should listen to the live versions of Bob Seger. They're much more powerful. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were at their time one of the greatest live bands on planet earth.
I definitely think the live versions should be heard/seen at some point, but I do tend to prefer studio cuts for a reaction video when hearing them for the first time. Now there are always exceptions for certain songs, especially when a live track has superceded the studio cut as the prime example of the song in the world (I'm looking at you "Free Bird").
@@midnightblue6668 Nowadays everybody can record a song thanks to digital processing, Autotune and Pro-Tools. If you want to find out, how good musicians are there's no better way than to listen to live recordings.
Seger has also stated that "Her Strut" was inspired by political activist Jane Fonda and her appearance before the Campaign for Economic Democracies. He stated "I was quite proud of her for doing that. I admired her crust. For going in there and having the strength to speak her mind, so I kind of wrote 'Her Strut' for an '80s woman ... you know, it was the dawn of the '80s, and I wanted to write a song about how women have become so confident and stepped out so much, and I thought Jane was a great role model." AXS critic Jeff Wallace feels that Seger succeeded in his objective stating that the song tells of "a strong independent woman and how she won't be controlled by anyone." Fonda has claimed to be flattered by the song, stating that "you’ll know why when you hear the lyrics."
My brother introduced me to Bob Seger 50 years ago. He and Bob are the same age and he said it was about Jane Fonda. I. Know my brother felt the same way about her as Bob
The boys in my town said this song was written about me. They said I hat a STRUT when I walked. I took it as a compliment, not disrespectful. Shout out to the Hainsport NJ boys! 💋
Love Bob Seger. I used to listen to him in the garage with my dad as a teen, helping him work on cars or do woodworking. I remember I used to hear the lyrics as "they do respect her butt... they love to watch her strut." 😂
Thank you, Brad n Lex, for getting to Seger. There’re so many. . .The Fire Down Below, Sunspot Baby, Feel Like a Number, Against the Wind, Even Now. Those are only a few of the greats. Love Seger. Love you guys.
This song was inspired by Jane Fonda in the early '70s, and is much about her being vilified for her political stances while being objectified for her beauty. She was outspoken activist for social justice then and still is to this day.
Jennifer Andrews, it’s been so long ago the building got removed and is now a cabin along our lake. But it was a fitting song for some of these gals who also travelled from town to town and were tired of it. Wow 35 years ago or so!
Late 80"s Canadian Strip Bar mainstay. Victoria BC Government St. Magazine Girl's featured back in the day. That's what he's talking about. Not just there , but everywhere.
To this day, after hundreds of concerts and shows, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were way up there among the very top for me. Incredible, fun shows. His voice!!!
I gotta say.. this channel has gotten so much better since Brad has loosened up. It’s almost like he’s realized no one is here to hurt him. And now we see what she sees in him.
Saw Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band open for KISS in 1976, on beautiful Cape Cod, and they got an encore. Unusual for an opener, and Night Moves hadn't come out yet.
"Shame on the Moon" is my favorite Bob tune. But old time rock and roll, like a rock, night moves, against the wind, turn the page and shakedown are all great tunes as well :-)
The Silver Bullet Band is a very tight unit. One of the best backing line ups like Heartbreakers, The Pips, and The Moondogs, (Long John Silver and the Moondogs,......look it up, you will be surprised who it is.)
I'm surprised no one is recommending Roll Me Away, a song that Rolling Stone Magazine critic Dave Marsh thinks is Seger's best-ever single. It's one of his best story-telling lyrics IMO.
You two never have a bad reaction - we LOVE both of you!! Two comments in particular by Lex were "on the money:" first. "You men are so simple!" followed by "Women will get mad if you DON'T watch'em!" and Brad, loved your very positive (and as usual, very accurate) comment: "Not a 7-layer salad." Beauty and enjoyment in simplicity. Finally, what both Mark Helms and Joseph Durham said below - nailed it IMHO. And again, thank you both!!
I've always loved the double entendre in the chorus, when he says "they do respect her, but... they love to watch her strut". If you happened to not pick up on it... when someone struts away... you can respect their butt. So this can be taken both ways. Super cool lyric.
Anyone ever notice the inconsistent snare drum on Hollywood Nights? It's great drumming but there's variation on that accent. So much good stuff from Bob Seger.
🎸💯 Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band tear it up‼🔥 One of the best concerts I've EVER been to! One of my friends at college & I went to Greensboro Coliseum to see him, Heart & John Hiatt! They turned that place OUT! 🤯 (That night was also one of the two best dates of my life, too! Thanks to Ricky from Stokes County NC! 😘) Y'all DO NEED TO check out/react to Seger's "Come to Poppa", tho!
Brad hit the nail right on the head. On what he said about women talking to much. But the way they strut makes up for it. Also in regards to bob's voice. He ended up getting throat cancer. And it has just about ruined his career.
If my memory serves me correctly Bob did smoke a lot of cigarettes back in the day and had throat trouble and even surgery? if I'm not mistaken. He references this in his song ''Trying to Live My Life Without You''. Great reaction y'all! Check out ''Sunspot Baby''
"Nothing to do with you, but a hit dog will holler" Love it. I make the same clarification to my wife when I make a general comment about women - Oh that doesn't include YOU, baby. Sunspot Baby and Fire Down Below are two other Bob Seger songs about women you should avoid, but just can't resist.
Too many great songs to recommend from Bob. Most of them have been mentioned, but I'll add "Hollywood Nights", "Rock and Roll Never Forgets", "Fire Lake".
Bob Seger is an icon to rock and roll. I have all his albums. This song was one of my favorites, along with Main Street which I highly recommend you give a listen to.
Women only get mad if the wrong guys are watching them. Their ego often depends on the quality of the men who pursue them. Btw, I always took the "They do respect her but" as a double entandre "They do respect her butt"

I was so happy on this stream with all the suggestions for The Godz "Gotta Keep A Runnin". The Godz are a historical band from Columbus, Ohio. Gritty, brash, rowdy biker rock at it's finest. This song is from their 1978 album, back when they were labelmates with KISS and Donna Summer. The lead guitarist, Mark Chatfield would go on to play for Bob Seger for many years until Bob retired. It's one of those jewels that will never win a poll, but you would have so much fun listening to it! I was happy just to see it on a poll. Stream Lab doesn't allow for much to be said. I was trying to tell y'all about how The Godz's hometown stage was The Alrosa Villa in Columbus. So many great memories of jam packed Godz shows there. So sadly, years later it would be the stage where Dimebag Darrell from Pantera would lose his life. People hung in there and passionately requested the song. There is a reason for that. We want you to discover more than the mainstream radio hits. The awesome stuff that lies beneath the surface. The song is full of attitude and the epitome of biker rock. "Gotta Keep A Runnin" flat out rocks from beginning to end! Take care, hope to see ya tonight!
Seger knew that young male radio listeners would hear "They do respect her butt", instead of the actual lyrics -- it was an intentional pun.
Bob Seger's Come to Poppa is a MUST.
The double meaning is lyrical mastery!
And it fits the flow of the lyrics so well - "They do respect her butt/(which is why) they love to watch her strut."
Aw man, you beat me to it! I was gonna say the same thing. Personally I always hear it as "butt"!
Come to Poppa for sure, a must do.
Come To Poppa is one of the sexiest jams ever!
This is definitely one of Bob's best. Sunspot Baby is my personal favorite, but you could not go wrong with anything from his extensive catalog.
I soooo agree!! It's definitely a sing at the top of your lungs with the windows down song. And "going to visit sister Flo"...so fun

Yes, I love Sunspot Baby!

The 1984 live her strut is the best. I always tell people to watch it. I especially like the dude with 6 maracas
probably at the hollywood sportatorium. i was there lol
my favorite Seger song is the first song he ever released. "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man". He's just in his 20's but it's an absolute BANGER!!!
Thay and Her Strut is my favorites of his. Have you seen the clip of him on here singing Ramblin Gamblin Man?
IF they listen to it, gotta do the LIve Bullet version.
This is the correct answer
This one is definitely one of his more Rock songs, another one that is even better is Come to Poppa,IMO
Agreed👍
Most definitely!
Come to Poppa rocks!
He does do a great cover of the song. Better than the original.
Totally his best song in my book.
Bob Seger could sing the phone book and make it exciting. What a voice!
This was the funniest , you win comments of the day 🏆
One of Seger's classics. Also check out Still the Same, Old Time Rock and Roll, The Fire Down Below, Mainstreet, and We've Got Tonight.
"TIME HAS COME TODAY".... Have a Splendid Day
and "Horizontal Bop" is actually pretty good, too.
Try Katmandu
All BANGERS!💯🔥❤✌

i grew up with bob seger, but didn't know about this song until years later. totally crunchy and premium soul rock music.
I’ve seen him 6 times over the years ♥️ His shows are legendary 🎼🎤🎸
So jealous. I was supposed to see him at the Toledo Speedway jam but he canceled last minute. Maybe next year turned into maybe never.
@@billdurfy2110 I’m so sorry to hear that. I have shows I have missed for various reasons as well. 🎼

the live Hollywood nights video is completely awesome
“Live Bullet”.
He sold out 2 stadium shows in under 4 hrs when i saw him in the 80's. I ditched school to get tickets. 😁

That's right!!!! In my top 5 for sure. Oh, he rolls you right into an all-out rock session with that song.
Still the Same

Always liked the double entendre of the line “they do respect her “but/butt.” Check out “Come to papa” for another Seger banger in the same vein.

Hanoi Jane
She will always be Hanoi Jane, a trader to the American GI
She was a traitor
There's a difference between being political and being a traitor to her Country, which she was without a doubt. Ask the POWs she turned on
Also, it wasn't about Hanoi Jane
Bob Seger's "Live Bullet" is the greatest live rock album of all time. Absolutely no question about it.
He said it like "they do respect her butt, they love to watch her strut". A play on words Brad.
You 2 are so good together! Thanks!

Omg, Lex! Mr. Pibb voice?! You are a National Treasure and I love it! ❤️❤️🔥
Strip club was the first time I heard this song.
I was a DJ I in a strip club for a few years and this song would make it rain for the dancer on stage.
Saw a few dancers use Turn the Page as well.
