    Update: Some time has passed since this reaction and it’s still one of my favorites. I’m now a mother! My own mother and I have always had a complicated relationship. And I couldn’t understand the lyrics of this song at the time. But it resonated so deeply. There is so much behind the emotion that came up here. The irony of listening to this song about a smothering mother with my own mother is astounding. Pink Floyd has to be one of the greatest bands of all time. ❤️ - Lex

    Mother is actually a really sad song, it’s about an overbearing mum molly coddling her son and not letting him be a boy and do the things he wants to. This is because she lost her husband in the war and is terrified of losing her son. It’s all done through love but has a negative effect on him creating bricks in his wall of isolation. That’s why he says at the end,” Mother did it need to be so high”. I cried today listening to Pigs on the Wing parts 1 and 2. Also When the Tigers Broke Free gets me every time, both by Pink Floyd. Love you guys btw.

      Yeah, it's a very clever song because of how warm and welcoming the sound of it is, but then you pay closer attention to the lyrics and realize it's kinda messed up. Just like how the mother appears to just love her child and want the best for him, but when you look past that appearance and notice what she's actually doing you realize that she is actually hurting her kid.

    It is a story of a young man who is struggling with his own feelings of abandonment and loneliness. The lyrics depict the protagonist's relationship with his mother, and how it affects him later in life. The mother in the song represents both love and nurturing, as well as guilt and manipulation. Overall, the song explores themes of parenting, mental health, and the struggles of growing up.

      But the song is about how the love of a mother can trap and weaken a person. The mother in the story is a true Gorgon, right out of Greek Mythology. The mother of the song is so protective that the son can not grow up out of her protection. The Wall started as a device of her making to continually protect and insulate the child. Which, in the end cut off the man from people. From any real relationships and therefore prevented him from becoming a man.

      That's the dilemma, mothers want to protect their children from the horrors of the world, but the more they protect them the weaker the children become if and when they eventually grow up. So all that love and protection children under 7 need is counter productive after age 7 or so...I think that's where a good father comes in handy....

      @@davidhutchinson5233 It's a horrific story of a kid who lost his father in the War, and was raised by a single mother who became excessively possessive and ruined his ability to have a healthy relationship with women and ultimately all people. As a man he suffers a mental breakdown and goes into depression and isolation (everything and everyone becomes just bricks in his wall). He becomes psychotic and has delusions about becoming a psedo-Nazi leader. When forced out of his isolation by psychiatric treatment, it lives that as a punishment, being forced to suffer others' judgment. The album ends with him toying with the idea of suicide.

      Very true. And you see YT reactors frequently express strong emotions to this song because they listen to it on it's own away from the context of the story, and it really is a beautiful sounding song. Presumably reactors are thinking about mom. Irony is that this isn't a 'mother's day' tribute song. In the story of the Wall, things are not good between mom and baby. She lost her husband and he last his Dad at a very young age. They both need him. result is that baby doesn't have father figure and mom has become overly domineering, protective and overbearing. Much therapy will be needed down the road for these two.
      And Lex, you're 100% correct. David's solo is beautiful and so emotional. He gets a little more time to express himself live compared to the album version, and he takes advantage of that.

    Lex, I think I will always be in awe of your ability to so deeply emotionally connect with music. I've loved Pink Floyd since I first heard them decades ago. And I like each and every song on the album (The Wall) that contained this song. But I don't think I've ever heard this song with so much passion as you did. I love the dynamic that you and Brad bring to your reactions--his attempt to delve into the meaning behind every line of lyrics and your fully-invested sensory joy in experiencing the music. And this stream with Momma Lex the other night was just wonderful--from her reminding Lex about a connection with a Bruce Springsteen song to her sharing a favorite high school band (Toto) with you guys. It's clear to see where Lex gets her joy of and appreciation for music.

      Funny (and beautiful) how she feels songs so deeply, yet she *completely* misses the point of so many songs because of her innocence, and/or ignoring the lyrics. I love her energy and she’s adorable, but it needs to be said bc this song is about something only men experience, yet not a word said about that. It’s not just Lex, this reflects are entire society which literally gives no 💩💩s about men’s feelings or experiences. Rant over… just saying. I thought she might be tearing up over the thought that she might “tear your little boy apart”, or was feeling concern/empathy for the suffering of men, but turns out she was crying because she thought it was about a mother “taking care of” her child!! 🙏🏼❤️🙄🤣

    • @curthenley455
      @curthenley455 3 года назад

      @@fzarro9947 I believe the verse got her because in one of their couch sessions they talk about her family, (mother), not being openly accepting of Brad when they were younger. When that verse hit about not being good enough, or dangerous to the child, is exactly when she lost it. I think she gets the lyrics a lot more than she leads on in this one and the fact she is sitting in between the two of them, is keeping her true feelings to herself on this one. That's my take on this. This song while meant to be about a boy, could easily translate to any child with an overbearing mother/parent. That's the beauty of music. It can be whatever you want it to be and relate to it however we choose. Peace and love to all

      She misdirects, "I was not ready for this." "It's so beautiful." "It's so honest."
      Then the "you'll always be a baby to me" with the hug and nervous laughter followed by over dramatic applause and rambling about serial killers is the ultimate misdirect- she needs to get out of her feelings.....what better than a serial killer?
      She so obviously gets it....watching her initially made me tear up....
      And it has nothing to do with anyone being analogous to the song it is more about the fact that the archetypes that Pink Floyd elucidate in their music are elements of reality that apply at various levels to all Mother's. All mothers have this instinct. Some give into it more than others, and your ability to relate to the message in this song is only relative by matter of degree.

If you listen to the full Wall concept album, you'll see that by "helping" him build a wall, that his mother failed him, as it trapped him inside and made him go completely insane. In this case Mother was a total nightmare and failure to her son.

      Everything has its place and time. It's possible they'd reached a creative dead end I suppose. But, given what both parties released later, I doubt that.
      Pink Floyd is perhaps one of the best examples of a whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Both Waters and the rest of the band have gone on to produce some fine music. But none of it has ever reached the level of their collaborative efforts. There was something about the chemistry between Waters' lyrics and his well known penchant for production perfectionism (he was notoriously known to never be fully satisfied with a song, always wanting to add and tinker with it). Combined with Gilmour's melodic sensibilities and Mason's sense of rhythm that just elevated their creations to the level of fine art.

    Pink Floyd are just the best, I’m in my 60s (past the middle) lol, I’ve grown up with this group.
    I still listen to them on a daily basis, coffee and the Floyd are my drugs, Mother is a beautiful song, it gets to a lot of people and makes them emotional, including me.
    Glad you all enjoyed it.

    the song is very deep, and the story is about how the Mother of the protaganist of the album protected "baby" yet at the same time laid the foundation of the "wall" that the protagonist further developed and struggles to get beyond. "Mother, did it need to be so high?"

    Just one person’s opinion, but for me I honestly feel that Pink Floyd is peerless among their contemporaries’ as well as currently in the world of “Rock” or popular music. There’s a complexity and sophistication to their artistry that distinguishes and sets them aside, brilliance.

    • @richardlefaive1944
      @richardlefaive1944 Год назад

      True. I go long stretches where I don't feel the urge to listen to them, because it's almost TOO much. It's not always "pleasant" to listen to because of the depth and nature of their lyrics. Then , when feeling contemplative or a.need to be moved .. I binge.
      When listening to music I normally focus on the music.and rarely absorb the lyrics until many hearings. But NOT with Floyd. From day 1, their lyrics went str8 to my brain. Which is saying something with respect to me.
      To put a fine point on your point about them simply being more layered and complex than anyone else ... ever in rock ... this came out in '82. I was in grade 10. By '87 when I was in 3rd year university, they had 400 English lit and music theory classes that spent an entire semester studying nothing but The Wall.

    I've been listening to Pink Floyd now since the mid-seventies. During several reaction videos I've seen how Pink Floyd will suddenly strike an emotional punch out of nowhere to those just hearing their songs for the first time and it's surprising, touching and yet reaffirming at the same time what a truly special group they were. As opposed to the typical safe wormhole most bands go down they always confronted the dark and dirty head on with a poignancy and clarity rarely found with other artists.

      Dude, that’s nice, but you *completely* missed the entire point of the song, like so many others. And yet it couldn’t be more obvious… her selfish, controlling “love” was abusive, and seriously damaged her son, emotionally, socially, etc. The whole album is about his attempt to recover from the damage she did!!! (And a society that doesn’t give a damn about men in general… we’re just cannon fodder). Truly blows me away how many people completely IGNORE the clear lyrics, and are like, “Isn’t that sweet… Mommies are so wonderful.” Roger might as well have not written and lyrics at all, bc people aren’t listening!!! 🤣🙄🤣🙄🤣#LaLaLaICantHearYou
