Father’s were out fighting and Mothers at the time were becoming very protective and in some ways overbearing to where it would lead to psychological damage to a generation of kids (young men in particular) ! This song not only captures a emotional sense but also a period of time ! Genius!

She clears the way for him and solves all his problems for him (building an imaginary wall around him). Pink later realizes this and asks at the end, "Mother, did it need to be so high?". Waters (the lyricist) makes retrospective references to his childhood and youth throughout The Wall, and the whole album is inspired by this...

The final phrase [Mother did it need to be so High] at the end of the song questions this "wall" she built around him because in the story of the album, he goes through some real personal issues relationship-wise.

NOW I have been listening to this song since 1979 a few hundred times at least. I have seen the movie multiple times. I have seen the concert live. I know the meaning of this album. Now I get it if you are a first timer listening to this song. I can see how 99% of reactors thing it is about a loving mother. I can also see why as a stand alone song one would think that. It could have that meaning as a stand alone single. But it is one chapter of a 26 chapter story. This album was meant to be listened to in its entirety over and over and over again.
