It’s from a concept album, The Wall. The protagonist’s father died in WWII, so his mother is very overprotective. The Wall itself is metaphorical, a barrier around him to keep the world out and his feelings in.

@@gregnowak6450 I agree, in a perfect world. Sometimes you don't find out until many years later that your mother directly contacted the person you loved and ran them off. That person just breaks it off and feels so intimidated that their path of least resistance is just to go silent.

It's definitely about a dysfunctional relationship between an overprotective mother and her traumatized son, and the relationship helps build a wall between the son, the character Pink, and the world around him. It's one more piece that leads him to withdraw from all relationships, as well as break the ones he has. It is a very sad song with very little uplifting points in it except maybe the music itself. I love seeing your reactions to these songs many of us love and appreciate your thoughtfulness about them!

The Wall is a Pink Floyd movie. It is about a guy losing his mind. The wall, is him shutting himself off from the world. He is building a wall around himself to protect himself from all the bad in the world.
The Wall movie is dark, but you might enjoy it.
Roger Water's never met his father, he died in WWII. His mother was over protective of her little boy.
In the live version, you can see the lighting difference between the boy/teenager singing, and the mother. On the album Roger is singing the boy/teenager parts, and David is singing the mother.

I highly recommend you watch David Gilmour and Richard Wright's (half of Pink Floyd) masterful performance of Echoes, live at Gdansk, accompanied by highly skilled musician friends of theirs. • @Cygnusart0843
    @Cygnusart0843 10 месяцев назад +4

From my understanding the album is loosely based on the life and experiences of Roger Waters.
It's an allegorical look at Pink Floyd’s childhood. I’m not gonna go too deep into it but I’ll try to break down the song.
For starters, The first song in the album: “In The Flesh?” the death of his father.
The song has vocals that turns into yelling. And then there’s helicopter noises and then it sounds like something dropping (presumably a bomb) then the song cuts to a baby crying. We know that his father died either before he was born or when he was far too young to remember him.
His mother was obviously very distraught and devastated. And whether she realized it or not, she became very over bearing and toxic. She clung to him basically because he was all she had left. That’s what Mother is about. Her not wanting him to leave her and her not wanting him to be his own person (cause then he’ll leave her).
“Mama’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true. Mamas gonna put all her fears into you.”
    Making him dependent on her.
“Mamas gonna keep you right here under her wing. She won’t let you fly, but she might let you sing.”
“Mama will always find out where you’ve been.”
Not letting him/not wanting him to leave.
“Mother should I build the wall?”
“Of course mamas gonna help build the wall.”
“Mother did it need to be so high?”
The Wall represents 2 things. 1. The wall that separates him from other people, ostracizing him. 2. And the emotional wall, blocking out your feelings. That’s part of his alienation.

This song REALLY, REALLY needs to be heard within the context of the whole album.
I would seriously suggest you listen to the whole album.
This album is a tribute, in a sense, to their original singer Cyd Barret, who sadly went insane and eventually died alone in his anguish.
The song represents the fears and paranoia that a highly overbearing mother can cause a child, especially if that child is sensitive in nature.
The whole story is so sad. The actor that plays Pink in the movie did an amazing job in capturing the erotic narcissistic mentality that developed in the character over his course of life.
Crazy good. Maybe watch the movie then listen to the album.
    Have a lovely day.
FYI: This moment in the child’s life was post WW2 in England

As many already pointed out, The Wall is a concept album, partially autobiographical about a fictional rocker named Pink (Roger Waters), who went through a mental breakdown before a show, every single tile of the puzzle of his consciousness, his life, fell apart as he builds a metaphorical wall to protect what's remaining of himself from the others. There's a movie, filmed by Alan Parker, with Bob Geldof as Pink, that is slightly different from the album, but basically it depicts pretty well the story.

To understand this song you have to know the narrative of the whole album. The album is called The Wall. The Wall is not a physical wall, but a mental wall that the protagonist, Pink, builds around himself to protect himself as he essentially has a mental breakdown. This song is the first real introduction to 'The Wall' - " mother will you help me build a wall" and then at the end " mother did it have to be so high".
Much of the rest of the album is about aspects of The Wall.

When people... experts on the topic and non-experts... get into a discussion on which is the greatest rock band of all time, Pink Floyd is usually either at the top!
When you have the chance, you should listen to this entire album (double album actually) all in one sitting. As a reactor that might not be possible as you may want to react to a lot more of the songs off this album. But eventually when you are done reacting to the songs on this one, take the time to listen to the whole thing in one go. You would have to set aside a couple hours to just sit and listen... preferably with headphones. This is a concept album!
Also... a movie was made off this album called The Wall. It's an interesting movie you might enjoy. Don't expect a regular movie though... it's essentially putting the music to a movie!

It’s not cute… it’s terrifying. The Freudian nightmare of the devouring mother

The album The Wall is a concept album it's meant to be listen from the first song to the last song one behind the other. The song mother is the very sad song. It is about a overbearing controlling mother to the point it makes her son neurotic.

Cold War + Divorce + Narcissistic Song Writer = this track. There is a reason why Roger has this song in all his tours post-departure from Pink Floyd and the remaining Band doesn't play it much.

I can agree that it's a beautiful song. However, I don't really understand that any song from The Wall album is recommended for listening as a standalone (except maybe Comfortably Numb). Several of the albums Pink Floyd recorded are so-called concept albums. This means that the individual tracks build on each other, not only musically but mainly thematically. And this is most evident on The Wall. This is really the story of one boy (Pink) from birth to adulthood. The song Mother is inserted into the story sometime in the first third and talks about the overprotectiveness of the mother towards the child, which brings a lot of trouble for the child's future and adulthood (which is why at the end of the song Pink wonders if it had to be so high - meaning the wall his mother eagerly builds around him in front of the world).
In order to understand the whole story (based on the real childhood of the author - Roger Waters), it is necessary to listen to the album in its entirety and preferably in one sitting...

I find it very disturbing. I experienced an overbearing mother growing up. It was very uncomfortable. So maybe I have a tainted perspective on it.

You said there's no video on this song. Well actually there is a Movie The Wall by Pink Floyd and the Movie goes along with the whole album and each song is a different video of the song. And you can get a Better View of inside his mind to what they were talking about and describing the songs from the Album from the Wall. This was a Masterpiece for it's time and it was eye opener for me. Check out the Movie and watch with Horror and Sadness and Anger and everything else. Great reaction from you.... First time seeing you and I'm going to check out some more of your reactions. 🎧💪😎

As previous post have said it’s a small part of a concept album, I’d say it’s incredibly hard to see where it fits into the overall concept. IF you can find the time I would highly recommend listening to the whole album only then will you get the whole picture.

Roger Waters (bass/ vocals) who wrote the lyrics was revisiting his life on the 1979 Pink Floyd album 'The Wall' which dealt w/ his isolation from his band and everyone else, resulting in from his difficult personality... 'Mother' is his recollection of childhood, growing up in post-World War II England... his dad passed away during the war... His mother was overprotective and overbearing as a single parent raising him.
I know many people have very loving and emotional relationships w/ their moms... but I was not one of them. My mom was controlling, abusive, neglectful and often unpleasant - She was married at 18 to man she didn't know in an arranged marriage ... He was 14 years older, had kids w/ his first wife and had baggage that she was not equipped to handle. She was unhappy and unloved... and she channeled her disappointments and anger towards her 2 sons. I couldn't go to her for comfort or advice... she would snap at me, ridicule me or rant some nonsense... so, I stopped speaking to her... And nothing has changed, even after my dad died and I'm an adult.
We now know that some people should not be married, and divorce is sometimes a better option when 2 people should not be together because it hurts the children permanently, the way it did me and my brother.

You should watch the movie with subtitles on so you don't miss any of the lyrics.
