  • Maasai tribesmen (Masai Mara, Kenya) herding cattle, taking them out of village to graze in daylight.
They are brought into the centre of the village at night to protect them from Lions and other predators.
Cattle are of vital importance to the Maasai, being the main measure of wealth and status. They are gifted as a dowry for wives, di the more cattle a tribesman has, the more wives he can have (The Maasi practice polygamy, meaning one can marry many wives, as long as he can pay the bride price).
The Maasai also bleed the cattle, they eat blood as a meal for special celebrations such as weddings, circumcisions and for healing purposes.
