Never seen this video before. Totally new take on When the Levee Breaks, grungy and nasty. I was aware that Plant knew how to hold a guitar, but I’ve never seen him do so publicly. Gotta save and watch this one some more. Love how Neil is in the moment and rockin in the free world with the world’s greatest band. What an awesome jam!
The greatness of this is that it shows in its simplicity a few of the things that made Led Zeppelin the best rock band ever. First, Page, Jones and Michael Lee lay down a powerful hypnotic groove, essential to Led Zeppelin. Page, being the consummate band leader, knows that he's got something special in the blues noise realm happening, so he just lays it down and doesn't lead the jam anywhere but where it needs to stay ... in the groove, with Jones embellishing. Plant, iconic front man that he was, sees an opportunity for some joyous madness, and, throwing all caution to the wind, grabs a guitar and goes for it. The result is an expression of exuberance, joy and a love for the stage and the company of his fellow musicians, and some Buffalo Springfield too. All this is made possible by Page, who has allowed Young and Plant plenty of room to be themselves, and the massive rhythm section sound of Jones and Michael Lee , an incredible drummer who, like John Bonham, died far too young for words. This jam was a monumental act of spontaneous skronk and joy!
It was clear they forgot to tune.. and how to play. But it didn't seem they were taking it too seriously. They earned their place back in the day. Granted JPJ and the drummer sounded good. Neil was being Neil.

I know I'm in the minority, but I really love this. Page has no real idea what's going on, but JPJ does; he gets that there's a real connection between Plant and Young. It's why Plant picks up the guitar. To bleed into the noise Neil's creating. He's digging it. Plant's never liked dredging up stuff he'd done before. And this was new, this sound he was making with Neil. He ignores JP. It's all about Neil. That's why he spontaneously brings in the bit of FWIW; he really did feel like something was going on. Look at connection between them at 6:10; it's like Plant is calming a wild animal. Neil's eyes are locked on him, waiting the signal. The drama is just fantastic. To me, the whole things works; including when JPJ cranks the tempo at 6:30, and Neil gurns on that cyclic riff of his. They're clearly having a blast by this point, and it's great to see. So to me, this is real, live collaboration. And I love it.
Leave it to Neil to grunge it up while jamming with Plant, a unique performance. Could Jimmy Page have been the 3rd guitarist? Never heard that before.

Neil embodies the sheer joy of playing a monster loud electric guitar and Jimmy loves it. Pity all the fools who can't see that because they think Young doesn't have 'good technique'. He's a hurricane🤘
The drums sounded dead, sounded flat like a cheap Hello Kitty drum set or some shit compared to John and Jason's booming and deep sounding drums. I think that's what made this song so good. With the volume turned up to 11, on a good car stereo, with that loud booming base drum and those loud, crystal clear, cymbals. Your rearview mirror didn't really stand a chance staying attached, but who cared anyways!
Incredible I've never seen this video before having been raised on Led Zeppelin since the 70's! Even more Incredible I didn’t even recognize the song having to do a double take at the RUclips title rather than recognition by hearing it given the VERY different sound of Neil Young oddly playing his own highly unigue version apparently on lead guitar with Jimmy Page letting it happen. Even stranger & almost appearing as comedy was Robert Plant throwing on a guitar to make this whole performance even stranger. This video proves the adage that if U ever think you've seen it all or heard it all....U haven't!!lol
The best part of that was Plant singing, "There's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear..." The rhythm section was truly what held that together.
I never tire watching Neil Young wrestling them notes out of his guitar! When Robert straps on a guitar and shoots Neil a conspiratorial, mischievous grin, egging Neil on into some righteous guitar weaving with Pagey and JPJ!
Neil plays loudly, and he is very intense, that's what he does. If Jimmy didn't like this, he wouldn't have invited Neil. And the nod to Buffalo Springfield was pretty cool.
Agreed, and Plant implements the Buffalo Springfield lyrics into Levee like an unreleased additional verse. So ingeniously performed here , if you weren't familiar with the Buffalo Springfield song, you'd think it was a verse that Plant wrote , then left out at inception of the recording of Levee, but decided to install it this nite with Neil Young. It was a tribute to Neil that'd melt any musician, no matter their success or recognition. I've underestimated Robert Plant at times like many others, but his vocal injury in the 70s was beyond his control. At the end of the day this guy has as much talent to improv and blend-in as anyone else in Zep.
That was awesome! I'm a huge Zeppelin fan, but I totally accept this as the jam it was. I agree that Jimmy was being charitable and letting Neil take the solo's. I wouldn't be surprised if it was discussed beforehand. Neil is one of the original punk guitarists and he ripped it up! Great fun!
Neil has a history of domination. He apparently can’t help himself. The biography about Neil Young called “Shakey” is worth the read. It cracked me up at the parts where Young went into some zone and just completely trampled other guitarists. The author made it out to be like a personality defect. Lol
Neil's been the out there solo guy since the 60's, so hardly charity, that's who he is, they'd be more than aware. Seemed to me like they had fun, so f@#$ anyone whoe cares to much about perfection.
Really and who died and named you GOD to judge what everyone else thinks? You're like a spoiled rich bitch driving 55 on a 65 highway with nothing better to, and you speed up everytime a some one who has an emergency to go to or is trying to get to work on time tries to get around you, and when they get back in the slow you slow your arse down again. I really am glad that my kids didn't have a charmed life with rich parents or have some guy with money keep them.
@@mtnvalley9298 I don't think so... John Paul Jones and Page looked at Neil Young like he was out of his mind and just stood out of his way and basically let him make an ass of himself. At least that's the impression I got watching this I could be wrong but that's just my opinion
@@mtnvalley9298 75 people agreed with me and zero people agreed with you at this point...... I don't know how you can "eyeroll" that buddy. BTW, of course none of the guys in the band would say how they really feel they have to be polite about everything nobody's going to actually knock Neil Young like that, but their expressions on their face and their body language during the so-called improvisation says it all lol
Plant and Young are playing guitar like Yoko Ono sings. If I didnt know who these people were and that they indeed are some of the most talented people in rock, I would assume those was like a rock n roll fantasy camp for rich dads
It's not about impressing those on the floor, ok? This is what jam sessions look like...hours and hours....into the morning. I'm shaking my head at how many here making comments don't "get it" and...honestly,,, they never will.
This performance is beyond good. It is transcendentally good. It raises the word good to a completely new level of meaning! This is the pure definition of rock and roll right here.
I love this. I can tell the Guys were having a blast. It was awesome seeing Robert pull out the guitar and hitting a few licks...Jimmy's smile was priceless !! Thank you for posting R&RHF..Too cool !!
It was a BAD BAD idea for Neil Young to start before Page. Neil Young was in his own world and obviously never heard the song before. Jimmy, is thinking WTF did the Canadian do to my song.
JWC 1958 Really good Phenomenal performance with the great Neil Young rocking out with Zeppelin. One of the greatest rock bands of all time. Just mostly listened to the Zeppelin hits in the 70's. Now this 65 year old enjoys them and appreciates them a lot more on RUclips and Classic rock radio stations.
Enjoying all the Zeppelin songs. Getting wife to buy me 10 Cd box set of all Zeppelin recordings to enjoy. Long live the remaining members of Zeppelin. Rock on!!!
I'm a lifelong Zeppelin fan since the 70's & as most comments have said here every aspect of this performance is rough on the ears. This would be the last gasp of Robert Plant's voice trying hard to reach some semblance of high notes which were totally long gone by 2007 with the final Led Zeppelin reunion concert. This is a lesson to all aspiring singers & those early in their careers. Robert Plant was 1 of the greatest Rock singers of all time...but didn’t have professional vocal training & used improper damaging singing technique permanently damaging his vocal cords by late 1972 when he like many singers pushed on thru his concert while very sick rather than postponing the show til he recovered. When singers over push their inflamed vocal cords they often cause hemorrhaging of the blood vessels which then causes bubbles filled with blood on the vocal cords. If U don't immediately do vocal rest for weeks or possibly months directed by an ENT/Vocal specialist...the blood filled bubbles burst permanently scarring the vocal cords. The scar tissue causes hoarseness & loss of range which then can only be treated by surgery with scapel or laser which changes the surface of the vocal cords forever. Once the surface of the vocal cords has been altered they'll never sound the same or be as good again....illustrated perfectly by Adele, Mariah Carey, Elton John to name just a few & of course Robert Plant who only had 4 incredible years before a concert that would lead to decades of painfully declining range, power, & ability. Singers never think it will happen to them...until it does.
Heather Zettlemoyer Neil Young just has bags more energy, attitude and chops, even if it seems a bit sloppy, than others less than half his age. Keep on rocking Neil, an absolute legend.
he looks possessed. i think he is out of his mind because the only thing he seems to be aware of is that it is them that he is playing with and it is overwhelming hahahahahaa it is too funny
I absolutely love the laid back vibe of jamming during this hall of fame performance. That's so Led Zeppelin lol. I just love seeing Neil and Robert and Jimmy enjoying themselves with one another. Then Robert gives that nod to Buffalo Springfield with those lyrics..just all around fucking cool. Thanks for the post ✌🖤🤘
They all look like they’re having the time of their lives. Sad that they could never stay back together. Incredible musicians in a league all their own
Led Zeppelin performs "When The Levee Breaks" with Neil Young, in a garage band/Crazy Horse style. Plant tweeks Young by picking up a guitar and doing a one note solo. He even throws in a verse of "For What It's Worth". Looks like Neil had a blast, John Paul Jones, not so much.....
and John Paul Jones on bass, and Bonham son on drums, fighting against 3 Les Paul crazy animals !!! Keep on Rocking !!! This was an epic Led Zepp concert !!!
I think if you look at it as "The Zep jams informally with Neil Young" you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for re-united Zep in all its glory, watch the O2 show. That's why they did it. This sounds simplified for Neil, but I enjoy it.
The father of GRUNDGE meets the Mighty Zep! I LOVE Neil's noise, and Plant laying down a lead. Jimmy chugging rythm. Jonsey keeping it together in the pocket! A great jam and some classic talent.
Alot of music genre terminalogy, fact is the music business created it all. In reality, there's musicians inspired by each other with the honor to collaborate and improv together. The grunge movement wasn't meant to be dubbed as that by the musicians who fronted it, they were simply turning their craft back to the organic age of hard rock when musicians jammed, used some distortion and layed down a groove like this, without all the annoying computer electronic noises from the 80s. These guys on stage here, whatever someone wants to label them, are grandfathers to just about every hard rock/heavy metal band thereafter.
@@DG-sf9ei I wasn't trying to define whatever "Grunge" is, was, or who was responsible for the name "Grunge. I never liked the term, and only used it to be concise, as Neil has been credited as the father of Grundge. Whether you agree with it or not, or whether it falls into your definition of Organic Collaboration or whatever. Please do not assume to lecture me on this subject as I was there at the beginning, beforethe bands that made up this genre were even signedI was at Evergreen and knew Kurt, saw all the bands when they were still living out of vans. I was there when SubPop was created. I am also a musician. So I don't need a history lesson or an ex[planation who they are, or their relationship to music. It was merely a short observation that I commented, without the need for you to define it to me .
@@stephencastro1437 It's all just rock n roll in the end, because in the grand picture there are far more different types of music contrast from rock to orchestral music for example, than rock to grunge. Rock is grunge and grunge is rock, no need to get offended there little one.

That was absolutely wild. I had to watch it twice
Neil embodies the sheer joy of playing a monster loud electric guitar and Jimmy loves it. Pity all the fools who can't see that because they think Young doesn't have 'good technique'. He's a hurricane🤘
Neil absolutely shreds
THEY ARE BOTH LEGENEDS.
Neil is forever.
Neil Young is ....awesome
Neil's into it man... love it. They're just havin' fun haha. Neil's tone though, that 5E3 bout ready to explode tone. LOVE IT.

You fools do not understand Neil takes this song to another dimension. Just feel it! That is what rock is all about.
Powerful jam session! Seeing Plant on the guitar is a first for me! Awesome!
The best part of that was Plant singing, "There's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear..." The rhythm section was truly what held that together.
Raw as it gets, true punk and Plant on guitar! Truly wild man
I never tire watching Neil Young wrestling them notes out of his guitar! When Robert straps on a guitar and shoots Neil a conspiratorial, mischievous grin, egging Neil on into some righteous guitar weaving with Pagey and JPJ!

Plant: "What the hell, I might as well pick up a guitar and start whaling too."
By the end of the song he is the best guitarist in the band.
Hell fukin yes!
that's wailing,nobody's fishing here
Good idea by Plant. Cause he wasn't wailing vocally.
@@theresaheyer537 And nobody's fishing when they're whaling. 😛
Jimmy loved it.
Neil SUCKS
everybody knows this is nowhere, lets drink some beer!!!!
Lol
@@AI-me8sl It's kind of hard on the listener sometime
Neil's been the out there solo guy since the 60's, so hardly charity, that's who he is, they'd be more than aware.
Seemed to me like they had fun, so f@#$ anyone whoe cares to much about perfection.
Unimportant what fools here talking

I have been a lifelong Zeppelin fan but this was one of the most painful things I've ever watched....
Me too! 😂🤣🤣
It was beautiful!! They loved playing together!!
@@mtnvalley9298 I don't think so... John Paul Jones and Page looked at Neil Young like he was out of his mind and just stood out of his way and basically let him make an ass of himself. At least that's the impression I got watching this I could be wrong but that's just my opinion

Plant friggin pulled off epic guitar, Neil unbelievable, this is 5 iconic men having a great time showing off beyond fantastic talent

it took me 2 mins to realize the song was when the levee breaks lol
LOL, same here..
Seriously???
It was a BAD BAD idea for Neil Young to start before Page. Neil Young was in his own world and obviously never heard the song before. Jimmy, is thinking WTF did the Canadian do to my song.
When it first started I was like "Did someone list it as the wrong song?"
Maybe they are showing the UK common market unity.
I'm not surprised at all at how many people don't get it.

I love Neil so I love this. 😊
100%True.
Les Paul, thanks for inventing this great powerful tool!
YEEEEEEESSSS!!! The electrical guitar, reverb, and multi tracking. LOVE me some Les Paul history.
Now I know why John Paul Jones is actually one of the true musician in the Rock.
