How about some love for the poor black lady in New Orleans who wrote it? Almost all of Led Zeppellins work is American music written by poor black Southerners that they got very wealthy appropriating and exploiting. It’s fantastic music - but people need to understand where it comes from and why it was written. This is a blues song. The Rolling Stones did the same thing.
Caution: This Video has low volume input. If you raise the volume level a lot to compensate, as I did, I got quite a shock when I played another YT video that had regular volume input!!!
Jeezuss..... when Mihirangi from New Zealand kicked in, it was a near spiritual experience...chills city... I got goosebumps man. How does a Kiwi channel the blues that well? Jimmy Page is loving this, without a doubt.
Mr. John Paul Jones is the most underappreciated figure in all of music. Few have ever had the level of musical vision that he's been able to achieve throughout his career. And he continues to do so while being content to surround himself with talented people, and take a very low-key and humble role himself. Thank you for this Mr. Jones!
I really hate how the word "under-appreciated" is tossed around these days --- JPJ was NEVER under-appreciated by anyone who grew up with Led Zep as the soundtrack to their youth! He's also highly respected by every good musician who came on the scene in the past 40 years! JPJ is one of the "gods of rock" and will never be minimized in rock history.

One of humanities greatest achievements. Derek Trucks just nailed the solo, and Mihirangi and Susan Tadeschi are just incredible. John Paul Jones makes this version of the song beyond brilliant.
Thank you, Playing For Change! On the Led Zeppelin IV album, an extra name is added: Memphis Minnie, a famous Mississippi Delta Blues guitarist & singer. She composed over 200 songs, including "When The Levee Breaks" in 1929. The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927 sent water 80 miles inland, devastating the poor rural farm towns. African-Americans became the focus for labor to repair & build new levees, and disaster relief food was rationed in a way that daily food was only given after a day of labor. After things settled, many Black families migrated north to Chicago & Detroit. Memphis Minnie was a blues icon who made an undeniable mark on American music and influenced musicians like Bonnie Raitt and Led Zeppelin. Born in 1897 as Lizzie Douglas, she was a pioneer of electric guitars and prolific composer who wrote nearly 200 songs in her career.
Bonnie Raitt and led zeppelin.. You mean everyone. Care to give credit to where Minnie and other black Americans got influence ? Lol.. We don't credit any of the cultures that mixed here. Traditional Irish sounds more Africa than black American music..lol. If I'm wrong about you I'm sorry... It's just getting old. Thanks for the back story.
@@daghostxxx1797 Good point! I didn't put all the details. The control of food was so that poor people could not travel away. Worse, many of the poor Blacks had been sharecropping, under Debt Peonage system. A virtual prisoner camp was made, to keep them in the Delta farmland, to pay off enormous debts. This was slavery, all over again. Herbert Hoover was federal Secretary of Commerce who came out to oversee the massive relief operation. Media coverage made him a hero, so Hoover ran for President and won! When flood was over, many of the Blacks migrated north to a new life in Chicago, or Gary, Indiana, or Detroit & Dearborn, Michigan, or Cleveland, Ohio.

The young man named Buffalo Nichols that opens the song on vocals gives me the chills when I hear him sing. He's young, but his voice sounds old filled with pain and suffering. Incredible artist as is everyone in this video.

from Wikipedia: "When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. "When the Levee Breaks" was re-worked by English rock group Led Zeppelin as the last song on their untitled fourth album. Singer Robert Plant used many of the original lyrics and the songwriting is credited to Memphis Minnie and the individual members of Led Zeppelin.[1] Many other artists have performed and recorded versions of the song.

Almost all of Led Zeppellins work is American music written by poor black Southerners that they got very wealthy appropriating and exploiting. It’s fantastic music - but people need to understand where it comes from and why it was written. This is a blues song.

Mr. John Paul Jones is the most underappreciated figure in all of music. Few have ever had the level of musical vision that he's been able to achieve throughout his career. And he continues to do so while being content to surround himself with talented people, and take a very low-key and humble role himself. Thank you for this Mr. Jones!
Not underappreciated by Zeppophiles. He is just the Zeppelin George!
