I gotta go to bat for Born Again here haha. I love that album. I'd even argue that it's closer to 70's Sabbath than the Dio era was. The riffs are a lot dirtier and have more of a weird edge to them, and Bill Ward goes into full 70's mode and just lets loose, unlike on Heaven and Hell where he was a lot more subdued and didn't get to put as much personality into his playing (Although I love Heaven and Hell plus the whole Dio era in general, don't get me wrong). Plus Ian Gillan gives the performance of a lifetime on that album. His screams on songs like Disturbing the Priest are just insane. I honestly love every song on it, but to each their own.

My friends & I used to drop
Acid, down near the waterfalls, in our local park, on Friday nights - in high school.
Master Of Reality, was THEE cassette, we would listen to, on our boom box.
The best part? As the ‘D’ batteries would die? The fucking music became SLOWER, and MORE EE-ViLL.
This, making our LSD experience MORE trippy. 😆

I discovered your guys' channel after I heard Max Cavalera talk about it in an interview. I love the content! Vol. 4 is my #1, but honestly it flips between that and Master of Reality on a weekly basis. "Lord Of This World" inspired me to learn bass because I LOVE the arpeggiated bass runs Geezer rips through while Iommi plays on top of them with his solo.

One of my first loves, so thanks for doing this guys. I was around 10 when my older sister played me the tape of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in 1973 or 4. I immediately loved it and like John grew up in a conservative religious household so it was like seriously subversive to listen to this album. I bought the cassette of Paranoid soon after and although we heard the title track on the radio none of the other songs were broadcast here in Australia. So I never got sick of this album and I still get chills hearing War Pigs - it still surprises me nearly 50 years after first hearing it. My ranking is limited to those albums I've heard, so nothing except 13 will appear after Born Again. It's very hard to rank the first six.
    12) Never Say Die
    11) Technical Ecstacy
    10) Born Again - I probably like this way more than it deserves but it is more Sabbathy than the Dio albums.
8/9) Mob Rules/Heaven and Hell are interchangable to me - I agree, not Sabbath but still good. The galloping dragon metal thing was too cheesy for this to be proper Sabbath.
    7) 13 - Much better than I expected. I don't like Rick Rubin's production on much of anything but I think it works ok on this - still an odd choice.
    6) Black Sabbath - as important and groundbreaking as this is, I don't reach for it as often.
5)Sabotage - I remember on a music forum some folks championing this as the best Sabbath album. Although I appreciated the argument, I'm not there yet.
    4) Vol.4 - Should be higher probably and it is close to perfect. I don't really like Changes that much and it had way too much readio airplay here. Funnily enough this is often the album my female friends cite as their favourite.
    3) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - I love this record and it's so different to anything else in the catalog. The first Sabbath album I heard and the heaviness of the title track and others still surprises me. Although it does have strings and other 'softer touches', when it's heavy it matches anything else. I don't like Who Are You? very much. an Album often underrated in my in my view. Killing Yourself to Live, National Acrobal and Spiral Architect are Sabbath standouts.
    2) Paranoid - not spoiled for me at all, though I am sick of the title track. War Pigs is timeless and I will never tire of it. The intro in the first few minutes before the vocals is one of my favourite album openings still after so many years. The use of a siren has never been bettered and still invokes as much dread as it did the first time I heard it.
    1) Master of Reality - Although my emotional attachment to this is in no way as strong as the above two records it is a perfect record in every way. It's not overplayed and has no duds. It is a very special album.

Prog rock trivia time : my favorite Sabbath album "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", has the unquestionable presence (Atheist pun intended) of Mr. Rick Wakeman on keyboards. Yes was recording just next door and Jon Anderson was tripping hard. He added a few bales of hay and a cow cut-out to the studio. They were doing Tales from Topographic Oceans, a double vinyl record with a song per side. Wakeman was a bit pissed, so he spent a lot of time with Sabbath and helped them with the album.
A few extra things. Sabbath's first album, of course, can't be compared to Led Zeppelin. Not even King Crimson was this heavy.... But the same year their first album came out (1970), Atomic Rooster released Death Walks Behind You, which was pretty powerful as well.
For an extremely heavy record which was WAY ahead of its time, you need to listen to Ys by Il Balletto di Bronzo (1972).You won't believe how effing hard it rocks! Sounds extremely modern.

Great review, guys! It got me thinking about people back in 1976 listening Technical Ecstasy for the first time, right when it was released. Imagine that: you are a Sabbath fan (or at least very familiar with Sabbath sound, Tony's riffs, Ozzy's high vocals etc.) and Technical Ecstasy starts pretty decent, with "Back street kid". One might think: "Ok, here we go, another great Sabbath album is to come" but then... it is basically a train wreck!

Vol. 4 has always been my favorite Black Sabbath album, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath has rose for me in recent years. I actually really like Born Again, but I agree that the production is awful. It's on my list of good albums let down by bad production. I agree on Seventh Star that No Stranger to Love is not a good song, but the rest of the album is really good, and I like Glenn Hughes' vocal performance on it, hence why it's higher on my list. I've never liked Never Say Die! as an album (Junior's Eyes is the only song I like), and Forbidden is easily the clear-cut biggest turd in their discography, for me.

  • @VMClassic
    @VMClassic Год назад +2

I agree with Brodie... 7th Star is a great album. my top 3 Sabbath albums are Headless Cross, Volume 4 and 7th Star. Iommi returned to his Blues roots and kicked out his best studio performance since '75 on Seventh Star. I think that every time Black Sabbath got a new singer they made an upgrade. Tony Martin is a dork with no star power but his vocals are on a different level from the other Sabbath singers. Martin is underrated as a lyricist too.

Masters of Reality is by far my #1. After that Heaven And Hell. I kind of feel the same about Volume 4, Paranoid, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Sabotage. They're all classics and I love them equally. I actually like Born Again. I love the first half of the album, but the last 4 songs are pretty much filler. Production isn't the greatest, but it's not Reek of Putrification bad so I can deal with it. With the exception of Dehumanizer that's pretty much where I end my Black Sabbath collection. I had 13, but I sold it, I didn't feel it was as good as The Devil You Know, and when I hold it up to the first 6 albums with Ozzy, it's just not in their league. I'd rather just listen to the early Ozzy albums. BUT the best Black Sabbath band who isn't Black Sabbath for me is Orchid. I love that band and hope they release a new album again some day.

Ok.. A new comment. I went back and listened to those albums a few weeks back. Had not heard them since 2018. Kept saying to myself about once a week that I'm going to do this post and keep putting it off.
Ok.. Black Sabbath self titled.. Just a killer album.. Love it.. That album takes me on a very interesting journey. Ozzy has a versatile character voice.. Distinct. Then I heard Master of Reality.. Yeah.. Terrific album. Sabatoge.. This could be my favourite Sabbath album.. Everything about it is engaging and terrific.. What an adventure. I also went back to Paranoid.. Thought it was great. Wasn't sure if I would be able to hear the song "Paranoid" ever again.. Or need to hear it ever again.. But I actually enjoyed it. Volume 4 is interesting. Changes.. A difficult one for me to enjoy(actually I can't.. I skip it) Mainly because of the lyrics.. Heavy and sad. I think I had two listens to Vol 4.
Oh Yes.. Sabbath bloody sabbath.. Love it. Now.. How do I say this.. Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules.. I pretty much heard them about the same time as I heard the Ozzy era.. As I first heard sabbath somewhere around 84. I would borrow cassette tapes from my local library. At the time when I heard those two albums I liked them on the first listen.. Even though it was very different.. And when I hear them now it's nostalgic and like travelling back in time. I prefer Ozzy's voice though.. In saying that.. When I'm in the mood for the Dio Era.. Those albums are terrific. Hey.. Not forgetting Dehumanizer and The Devil you know. As for 13.. I've heard it a couple of times.. It was ok.. Nothing rubbed off on me that much. Honorable mention to the Tony Martin era.. Very much underated.
Actually.. Someone I knew from public school.. I would visit their house occasionally or once a fortnight or so in the mid to late 80's.. And my school friend at the time would invite me into her room and I remember one day she played Reign in Blood on vinyl.. On the old component system.. Then on a different day she played Bon Jovi and Zeppelin.. Then Sabbath.. Then Ac/Dc.
