25 years ago, we moved from Austin to Colorado. Since day one, the thing we miss the most is HEB (and their upscale version Central Market). They did not sell BBQ back then, but I'm sure it's awesome, because everything about HEB is awesome. On the other hand, we do not miss the extreme heat and humidity, fire ants, mosquitos, fleas, scorpions, and traffic. There's always a trade-off...

There used to be a bbq place in the next town over that was really pathetic. The last two times I ate there convinced me to never go there again. Order the brisket sliced and it was 50% or more fat. That's obviously why they always wanted you to get it chopped -- so that you couldn't see how much fat there was. The sides there were pretty much hit or miss, but mostly miss.
That one is apparently closed and another one has opened up down the street that is generally better.

Arnie, when you have a chance, try the HEB Barbecue in Odessa, Tx.
It’s killer, several knotches above the rest.

Uh….what the heck! Our H‑E‑Bs here close to Houston don’t have that! I feel robbed! Does SA have them at least so I can tell my son since he lives there or is it just Austin?

Arnie, you made Tacos Bestec the other day. Do you have any suggestions around the Austin Area I can get some?

Definitely need to try Cuantos Tacos on their "tacos matamoros" special days, and also Con Todo for their taco matamoros. I think those would be the closest. Cannot forget Oye Taquito on Chavez - they're super on point. Owner brings tortillas, queso fresco and Joyas from the RGV to Austin, great bistec tacos.
