Hubert Laws is the greatest flute player in the world! Jazz or Classical! I'm quoting the great Quincy Jones, from Quincy's autobiography. Hubert Laws is! And still is! My wife and I just heard him live in Chicago March 14th, 2019 at the Studebaker Theatre downtown. Hubert was amazing! Thank you So much for posting!
Watrous' solo here is incredible- possibly my favourite solo to Spain I've ever heard (I'm a guitarist and Benson is my one of my favourite guitarists).
Nice to see the All-Stars cast ! The 70's was my favorite era with Jazz Fusion . Chick sure did write many great songs . What a great era with the addition of electronics , it fulfilled my Hard Rock love . Thanks
A truly amazing performance, especially for that time, but now as well. I can't remember ever seeing Stanley playing an upright bass, George and his Super 400, Watrous was amazing, Lenny was hot as always and Chick just smoked it. Never saw this before . I was studying classical guitar at CSUN at the time, guess I missed it. Thanks for sharing.
That's why altho some look down on George now because his later work is very commercial, in my eyes he has nothing to prove. He's done it all in jazz and held his own with the greatest. And he can STILL do it! Quite a few players have tremendous speed and virtuosity, but he has a rare combination of that with lyricism that after all these years still kills me... if you haven't done so, check out the youtube of 'How High the Moon' with GB and Lage Lund - incredible!
¡Qué temazo! Thanks for posting. I love this song in all its rempditions, few compositions are so inspirating I think. And now I just know two "new" (to me) fabulous musicians, Hubert Laws and Bill Watrous, thanks
Great cut! This became one of my favorite jazz songs when my son's jazz band used to play it. It's kind of funny to see Bill Watrous's slide oil stuck in the inside of the concert grand, eh?
Holy FFFFFFFFuckin shit. Chick. Benson. Stanley Clarke. More. And, AND, in this same show were names like McCoy. And Rahsaan Roland. Sonny R. Freddie H. Hubert L. Lenny White making it all work. And the almighty Quincy presiding over festivities. Jazz's absolute pinnacle. It would never again reach this astronomical height.
They all(and each) have an immense, original sound that would challenge any up and coming jazz musician and put him/her to their limits. Talk about being sucked in a vortex and barely escaping with your life!
Jeez man, ive not heard much of George Benson, but ive never heard him shred like that! What an amazing group. Chick Corea always has the best musicians with him!
great, thx very much for posting! saturday morning music for sure back in the 70's. great way to start the day! then of course end the day with some Miles from Bitches Brew or other.
Love it when Chick (lipcurl) rips into the moog. I got a DVD of this a few years back. Watched it 20 or so times. Stellar line-up. At the end of my DVD it started to go into the 1976 awards show. I was devastated when it faded to black minutes later. Anybody got it?
To clarify :- i meant the Lydian scale with it's 5th degree 'raised'. Or Lydian Augmented, or (as i said) Lydian sharp five (#5). (ie. 3rd mode of the melodic minor.)
This is the only version i have heard of 'Spain' where they omit the interludes between solos. i assume this was due to air time restrictions. I dont mind admitting it got me first time round as i thought the trombone (Bob) had come in early. Its always nice to get caught out now and again !!
Bill makes it look so effortless it almost looks like a guy who is faking playing the trombone. His chops look the same whether he is playing a high F of one in the staff.
Some people listen to stations like the Wave and think they are listening to jazz, well they really need to check out his clip so they can see the roots of smooth jazz
Fusion was GOOD for jazz. That made them be able to do this event. Has there been any solidified interest in jazz in 25 or so years. NO! Wynton has not made the music more popular in any way. But Chick, Stanley, Hubert laws, Wayne Shorter, George Benson all brought people into the music and helped them understand the true spirit of the music. It's adventure, power and variety...
@8art He has changed so much over the years. Make sure to check out his current stuff now, as well as his stuff from the Manhattan Wildlife Refuge years. Both are excellent.
I love the chemistry
I never imagined Luke Skywalker was so talented with the trombone
That prosphetic hand is pretty advanced...
he was using the force.
Great. HUBERT. I Want to meet You.
Are we not even gonna talk about Lando on flute I mean come on
I realize I'm pretty off topic but does anyone know a good place to watch newly released movies online?
RIP CHICK COREA ABSOLUTE LEGEND !!!
All these awesome musicians at once! This is great! George Benson still tears up the house with those mad guitar skills!
Bill Watrous, what an amazing trombone player!
George Master Benson

Orlando Valle
Stanley Clarc is the magic link to all of these wonderful musicians! 💪
Everyone that soloed on this revision of spain was arguably the best jazz (insert instrument here)-ist ever.
Rest in Peace, Bill Watrous :(
Watrous' solo here is incredible- possibly my favourite solo to Spain I've ever heard (I'm a guitarist and Benson is my one of my favourite guitarists).

I can't get enough of this classic song.
Check out Larry Coryell’s solo version (though double-tracked in the studio)
My favorite live version of this song...

Kazu Tophill And this is 11 years after he, Richard Davis, Jimmy Cobb, and Hu Laws recorded "The Laws of Jazz."

Oh yeah its extremely hard especially 3:22
Not to mention Bill Watrous in fine form. Great vid!
Great cut! This became one of my favorite jazz songs when my son's jazz band used to play it.

Great Video. Please put more if you have.
Bill Watrous es mi idolo lo maximo"
Hubert Laws is definitely the best jazz flautist ever, first time I've ever heard of him was through Bob James's "Touch Down" album!
And what an album that was. My god!!!!
Incredible!!!!!!!
Hubert Laws is a badass!!
Definitely should be added to the favorites
