    Chase, take it as a compliment ! There are many ways to approach the material. This is your interpretation and method for playing the George Benson style. As a matter of fact, your teaching method is so much more informative and easy to understand than other teachers out there. Take any such criticism with a grain of salt and let it roll off your back and pay it no mind. Keep doing what you are doing, which certain others AREN'T DOING, and that is building a community of players that are motivated and appreciate the fresh approach to teaching that you are so good at !

    • @ChaseMaddox
      @ChaseMaddox  Год назад +2

      Haha thanks Chuck! I already let it roll off my back and have too much to do in helping people that want to be helped to bother with any hater 🤘

    • @ChaseMaddox
      @ChaseMaddox  Год назад +2

      What was the criticism? Just saying something isn't correct without an explanation of specifically why is not a criticism. It's clear from his comment, which he quickly deleted, that his goal was not a critique but a personal attack to try to diminish the reputation of my teaching method. So, no. I don't ascribe any validity to someone who needs to personally attack another and then can't even stand by what they wrote.

    I thank the Montreal jazz festival for the memories of a 1989 BB King and George Benson double bill. What I think may have been so inviting and accessible for many guitar music lovers is that Benson had both feet in the jazz and pop world. He did not discriminate between the two and what he was able to showcase within each helped serve the song, the music and the listener. As great as BB was, George did not need King as a last name. Thank you for sharing his secrets. 🙏

    Chase. Read the Peter Farrell comments regarding criticisms of your approach to Benson lines featured in this lesson. I can only say I have viewed several of your jazz lessons -- and Peter's -- and have found elements in both -- that I find valuable and helpful. I support you both -- and hope that you continue to provide quality material for jazz guitar students like myself.

    Thanks Chase. I just crept slowly past the age of 90 and you are a bright spot in my life. I play C/W and have been trying to learn jazz for several years. To me, music is a language and you are one of very few who seem to teach it as such. It is amazing how you and other greats speak your own language on guitar. Keep teaching and know that you are appreciated. You make it easier.

    Chase, I closely follow several guitar instruction channels on RUclips and find your materials and approach to be top-notch. Most recently I've memorized your book of ii-V-I licks in all keys and it is a centerpiece of my practice routine as I work to develop a vocabulary of jazz phrases. I really appreciate your approach and find that you have much to offer aspiring jazz guitarists such as myself. Thanks and I look forward to continuing to learn from the content you create and share.

    Chase, many thanks for this again being clear with this lessons and having such a prgmaticstyle, showing a detailed step by step approach. I learned and enjoyed you demonstaring what is going on with a clear interpretation of George Benson's playing. I would consider you as one of the very best teachers for this very reason not only Benson but other inspiring guitarists. Whilst many others have incredible playing skills, they often struggle to break things down systematiclly and in an articulate way ,with a structured approach and great support material. I also believe that you respect your peers and whilst you may disagree with some of them, you always maintain that others also have valid opinions/approaches. I think your method focuses on the outcome for students and helping them achieve with clear goal for each lessons, not on you and your playing!It has certainly helped me considerably. Many Thanks Sibbs

    Hey Chase - Well, as an educator [not of music unfortunately] , I can say that we are all different kinds of learners, and different types and at different stages of development, Therefore, i reckon that the different characters and characteristics of guitar instructors all suit us differently at different times - SO!!! WE are all valuable and recognize each other as "brothers" and not perhaps be unconsciously dominated by our "ego-Id" conflicts and start going for each other's jugulars - To me, anyone doing so, is just demonstrating to the world that you are still "stuck in your inner child"! - So, would be brothers - Check out that mirror; see yourself = Calm down and "shake hands" with your brother musicians - WE are all on this boat together, and have to make it across this ocean of musicality. :)

  • @jazzguitarneophyte-christo7988

    Since subscibing to you, I have learned so much! BTW there are many ways to approach the GB sound! Yes, he may have his way of doing it and people who studied under him may know "that way" but in the end of the day brother, it is "HOW YOU SOUND" regardless of technique, if you make it sound like GB, you have achieved your goal! More power to you! Remember it is the end product that matters! I have a friend cannot pick that well as he has right finger issues yet if you hear him play Sultans of Swing, you would swear it was Knopfler yet his picking style isn't near knopfler's at all! Case in point there so haters, please grow up!!!

    Tasty licks but doesn’t Benson use economy picking? So for lick 1, he would start on an upstroke but then play another one as he moved to the next string and then use an upstroke every time he got to a new string. Seems a lot easier than ‘jumping over’ each subsequent new string to get on top of it as your hand moves across the strings from high to low. Or doing alternate but starting on a down quickly turns into the same thing.

    • @ChaseMaddox
      @ChaseMaddox  2 года назад

      Not exactly, depends on the kind of line, but this approach is most common for these types of lines without descending arpeggios.

    • @5geezers
      @5geezers 2 года назад

      He used an downward pick slant on the upstroke, so the pick is in the air ready for the next down pick on 2nd string. 🤓

    Maybe you can talk to Peter Farrell to see just what he thinks you are doing wrong and you and he can make each other better teachers we all should be able to be teachable not just with guitar lessons but in life as well.

    Chase You don’t claim to be a George benson expert rather you share what you appreciate about his playing. Peter should know better. George is an amazing person in all aspects (he’s a member of my religion) he’d never resort to that. However peter is an amazing player …perhaps he feels he’s the only person to be able to talk about George. But we can all talk about what we appreciate and what we learn from George. It’s a free country

      Thank you, Nic! 🙏 As you said, my goal with these types of videos is to share what I've learned from these masters and hopefully help others who enjoy the same musicians approach their style.

    I suppose "that guy" thinks he's a purist and in my opinion believes he's protecting his buisness interests by slamming others that want to share their point of view of a famous artist's approach to this art form. It's just not helpful to what we as players aspire to. Here's the thing in this instance, He's not George Benson, you're not George Benson. George is the artist and those of us that have been touched by his prowess as a musician may not have the ability to attempt to demysitfy what he is doing . If any of us have the ability to share personal insight into what we interpret, in this case, George is doing, it is a benefit to the community and we in the community decide what we garner from that point of view. Chase, you have an audience that applaudes you. Don't give creedence to the one dude in the audience that boo's. Keep doing what you do.

    This is in response to the negative comments that Peter Farrell posted and then deleted. Hope it helps:

Peter Farrell made more than a few disparaging comments about this video and directed them at Chase.

At the end of the day, come on Peter, this is just bad form. You're better than this. You don't need put down others. You don't need to put down other products to make your product look better. Consumers are smart enough to vote with their own dollars.
    Peter, if you publicly disparage your peers and colleagues on social media like this, it just makes you look bad. It makes you look bad publicly to both your potential customers and your colleagues.
    There is no "jazz police" or "George Benson style police". There is no authority on art. That's one of the best things about Art.
    There is only paying customers and word of mouth recommendations or word of mouth negative reviews.

    I have participated in some of Peter's Zoom calls, and I have also purchased some of Chase's lessons and participated with Chase on his recent Zoom meeting with Dan Wilson.
    I like both Chase and Peter as people, but honestly I have found Peter's courses to be prohibitively expensive. If you look at some of the COMBOS on Peter's Website, the BLACK combos are $1,471 for all his PDF and $2,000 for all his videos for Black Friday. That's $3,471 for all his video lessons and PDFs. Peter probably considers this a heck of a deal, and he is free to charge whatever he wants, but I don't know anyone who would pay that much for any online guitar method. Over the last few months, I have checked out Peter's website and some Obsidian or Diamond combo was $15,000 or so. I just had to laugh. I don't know who he is marketing to but, hey he is free to charge whatever the market will bear. It is entirely his prerogative. He might get lucky if Elon Musk decides to learn George Benson style guitar.
    Peter is a great player, and so is Chase. Both of you guys are just musicians trying to make a living, and you're both free to compete in the marketplace.
    Both Chase and Peter are free to put out their products, and consumers like me are free to choose where we will spend our own money.
    I chose Chase's products because I found value in them. I did not choose Peter's products because they are just prohibitively expensive. I understand that Peter studied under George Benson himself and that Peter says he teaches the exact fingerings and picking patterns George uses. However, even as enticing as that may seem, as a consumer/customer, Peter is just unrealistic in his pricing. There are just so many things I'd rather spend $3,471 on rather than a bunch of video lessons and PDFs on some website.
    There are many guitar lesson websites that promise "lifetime membership and access", examples include Denis Chang's DC music, Daniel Weiss' Galactic Guitar, Chase's Jazz Memes, and Peter Farrell's George Benson method. But at the end of the day, none of those websites allow you to download their videos (understandably to avoid piracy). So if the website goes down or goes out of business, there goes your "lifetime membership".
    I'm sure not going to pay $3,471 on Peter's Website to access all his videos and PDFs for a "lifetime membership", and I don't know many people who would either no matter how "authoritative" or "valuable" they are.
    I like the business model of Tomo Fujita's Guitar wisdom. You pay a monthly membership of $15 per month, and you have full access to everything. Cancel anytime. Very reasonable. There is value there. Maybe Peter should consider a monthly membership business model, like how Tomo does it.
    I also like Chad LB's JazzLessonVideos business model, where he just sells a lot of PDFs, and then offers personal lessons on top of that. Chad LB is an absolute monster that got down Michael Brecker's bag to a T, just like how Peter Farrell got down George Benson's bag to a T. Yet Chad LB is reasonable and realistic in his pricing and business model, whereas Peter is not realistic in his pricing.
    In the end, the products will speak for themselves, and consumers will vote with their dollars.
    Consumers are pretty smart when it comes to their own money. They know what they want.

      Thanks for your comment, Michael 🤘 I agree with you that ultimately the market will decide what approach is most valuable and people are free to charge what they want and reap the risk and rewards. Also, I don't plan on going out of business, but if I did know that I would make sure you received downloads of any courses you paid for "lifetime access" because I take my word seriously 🙏
