John did a solid walking bass while being able to add his own harmonic and melodic mix to it and to be able to solo and return to the walking bass doing the same thing he did when the song started without any fatigue is a level of mastery no human will ever be able to know
That section where Chick and Weckl are trading 8s is sublime. I had the pleasure of meeting Chick once, back in '93. I told him he was my L. Ron Hubbard. Graciously, he laughed.
Chick is one the finest compers in music history. He stands toe-to-toe with the soloist and challenges them with creative phrases. Amazing. I lost a major when he passed.
Chick plays that synth with phenomenal dexterity, it is unreal. Sometimes it looks like the instrument is alive in conversation and making those extraordinary atmospheric sounds all by itself, truly remarkable.

i just have to reply chick corea and scott henderson just a great contrast the first chick corea album with scott henderson on some of the songs . my favorites . just a shame that they could not have played together more.
henderson's solo is just so immense. the little references back to the melody ground the whole thing so well and the interactions with weckl and patitucci are so dynamic. amazing stuff.
Music of the stratosphere. It's no wonder that the greatest musicians and jazz composers were more appreciated outside the US. RIP Chick, the world is darker without you.
I love that so many of us are still listening to this incredible music in 2020.. This is one of my favorite CCEB performances of all time.. with Scott Henderson.. I love Frank G. as well.. Patitucci is just devastating.. and a joy to watch and listen to here.. but this lineup just kills!! Maybe its the tension between Scott and Chick?
Watched this phenomenal set many times over the years and I cannot recall ever seeing and hearing a more extraordinary ensemble of prodigious musical talent in any music genre over the last 50 years. I’ve always loved and appreciated this music and all the super talented musicians who made this genre happen in the 70s. I have never failed to be moved it’s totally from another world. when I was a teenager I followed a fast growing and ultra cool underground Jazz funk movement that was popular in England in the early 80s. This was just before the advent of the revolutionary Electro-funk genre. Chick Coreys RTF, and the Latin Jazz rock/fusion sub genre he helped pioneer and this band, was among a whole slew of American Jazz fusion artistes pioneering this sound. This band was the zenith of his musical achievements IMO. The pop, rock and dance charts were already rocking to early hip hop, synth pop and electro at this time. This epic musical brilliance was sadly overshadowed by much of that, Hell even Herbie Hancock got in on the electro boogie bus with his legendary Rockit album during this era. I’ve always felt sorry for the many youngsters who missed much of this classic jazz fusion sound that Chick Corea championed whilst the musical revolution happened and musical tastes changed. Thankfully YT has all this legendary music on tap 🙏🏽
Chick's rhythm sensibility and 'twilight zone' phrasing is scarily breathtaking. What an amazing piece; and I truly love Henderson for his Jagged-edged melodic approach: ALL THE WRONG NOTES PLAYED RIGHT! My favourite ever jazz-fusion band!
