She chants the 5th and 11th spell of Odin (Othan) that protect warriors. The warriors form a protective circle around her while she does. Part of it is translated "whole to the field of fight, whole from the field of fight"
Othan contains several ancient combat protection spells and words of Odin, god of the north and lord of poetry and war. The first part of the song is a combination of spells found in various bracteates. These bracts were produced mainly during the migration period until the 19th century AD. in northwestern Europe. They were generally made of Roman gold, which the Germanic tribes had received as money in times of peace. Although Odin enjoys war, he also takes pleasure in poetry. (Hávámal, stanza 156) The third part is darker, since in it a spell is invoked for active combat that can have the power to stop an arrow in its flight. (Hávamál stanza 150) After that the name of the highest Norse god is repeated in a wolf, barking mantra, in part to convey the feeling that ancient Norse warrior groups were often perceived as herds of animals. This for example is described by Ibrahim Ibn Yaqub al-Tartushi, a traveler and merchant of the 19th century, who writes that the people of Hedeby sang in a barking manner. An eleventh I know, if needs I must lead To the fight my long-loved friends; I sing in the shields, and in strength they go Whole to the field of fight, Whole from the field of fight, And whole they come thence home. A fifth I know, If I see from afar An arrow fly 'gainst the folk; It flies not so swift That I stop it not, If ever my eyes behold it. [Hariuha laþu laukar gakar alu ole lule laukar] It is possibly a kind of word puzzle, built to cast a fertility spell. That spell could be sexual or also fertility for the earth.
What a great choice for an introduction to Heilung! This is one of their chill-raisers! And its a Maria dominate song - which are my favs of theirs. I highly recommend the whole Lifa concert, which is where this clip comes from. It is AMAZING. Their live performances are like a ritual - one that even the audience is part of! The audience howls and chants and throat sings and its great! You can find it in full on their YT channel. If you want to skip the full concert, I would at least check out In Maidjan and Krigsgaldr from the Lifa concert. Also check out Anoana (there's a great music video for it which is BEAUTIFUL) and Norupo (also has a mv)
You've only seen the very edge. I've seen them twice live and Heilung is quite certainly one of the most interesting acts I've seen in years. And their stage act changes all the time. Glad to see you checked them out. Give "In Maidjan" from this same performance a look or perhaps "Anoana" to get a better feel for what this band is about. "Othan" is mellow by comparison to the rest of their catalogue.
I like how every person I see reacting to Heilung is always confused in the beginning as to what they're gonna get into and there is ALWAYS a moment where the music clicks in the persons head. At that moment, you can see the wheels turning in the persons head. The moment in this reaction seemed to be at 3:20
hi! you mentioning hellblade; i’ve also played, & fun fact, heilung does the music for the trailer! the song is ‘in maidjan,’ which some people have mentioned already. but definitely react to it & see if you recognise the part of the song from the trailer!
Nice reaction! The whole Lifa ritual is awesome. I saw them live in Asheville last year and it was a spiritual experience. If you love the Nordic stuff check out Wardruna if you haven’t already. They did a lot of the music for the Vikings mini series (Helvegen, Lyfjaberg, Voluspa, Viking Suite). Also Heilung’s song Nikkal. A song to the moon goddess Nikkal. Based on one of the oldest known songs from 1400 BC. Written down as cuneiform tablets and discovered in the early 1950’s. It’s the only one that was still in one piece. It consists of instructions to play the melody and sing the lyrics but true details have been lost over time. Yeah, I’m a fan.
First of all, i really liked that reaction. Heilung is a great band. Some background information about the music, because there are two bands to mention. There were some Band before Heilung called Valravn and Euzen. For Valravn i would suggest a song called Koder Pa Snor Valravn was Christophers band before Heilung And Euzen is the Band Maria sings for in a clean voice and without antlers Euzen with the song Metamorph.
you can continue your journey into nordic music with eivor live at the old theater in tórshavn, when she sings "falling free". this is what a master degree in traditional nordic vocal techniques sounds like
Othan is an alternative spelling of Odin. It’s a song of worship to Odin, the North Germanic and particularly Scandinavian god of wisdom and war. I’m Scandinavian born and raised, and it’s insane to me the way Heilung are able to play on certain chords of my heart with their music. It all just feels deeply like home to me.
i'm surprised you've not done any more videos about heilung especially since you seemed to love it. I recently found this channel due another vid, so been going through a couple that interests me. And i had hoped you had more than one heilung video. Oh well. :) I bet you've been listening to them since tho, maybe that's why no reaction?
Hi! Yes, we did actually react to one other, quite some time ago, and something happened and the video was corrupt. It frustrated us very badly and we haven’t covered anything else of theirs since then. But yes, we have listened to at least 1-2 others on our own time 😁
Hell yeah. That was quite a spooky, entrancing way to start off my day… not cold enough yet to start throwing on dead animal skins, but I definitely felt connection to animal base instincts. Heilung is german and means healing. Thank you for everyone in the comments saying that this band is nordic AND central/north european, because this band is actually part german and some of their texts and "style" is proto-germanic as well and from a time way longer than the "viking" era. Some of their songs are even in german, as the shaman Kai-Uwe Faust is german and the founder of Heilung. Thank you for reacting to them, you should def check out their other Songs like Narupo, Anoana, Asja, In Maidjan, Kriegsgaldr....
You should watch more of HEILUNG live at LIFA. Best show ever! BTW: 12:34 Watch HELLBLADE 2 trailer! The music in the trailer (or... the sounds... *bg*) are from a song from HEILUNG!!! And in Vikings S6E10 are fragments of the HEILUNG song "Fylgija Ear", "Hamrer Hippyer" and "Alfadhirhaiti" used. Sadly, they cut it so much, the fragments are only seconds in between. HEILUNG is more like proto-germanic/-norse not Viking mostly.
Hello guys! If you like/love Senua's Sacrifice and have check out the official reveal trailer from Senua's Saga Hellblade II from the game awards 2019, you have to watch Heilung / Lifa - In Maidjan LIVE. You gonna love it for sure! It's the first song from their 2017 Lifa Live, wich is where the Othan Live video you have reacted to come from. Greatings from Spain and enjoy! 😀
Guys do yourself a favour and study every song this band produces like it's an individual project to learn from. This band takes pieces of our ancient history and turn it into deep reflective performances, every word and every thing they present being important. I'm only starting but it is interesting how they even present it in ancient languages. Every single one of their performances verbarates through you and calms you while it causes you to reflect almost like their presenting old memories and wisdom that still lives deep within us. Just incredible.
this is practically a "benediction" of the warriors by the female shaman or seer and it's beautiful to see them rising their shields like to protect her in exchange. by the way their music will be in the next Hellblade game and they don't sing in their language they sing in ancient languages like Old Norse and proto germanic which makes what they do even more difficult. since you mentioned watching one of their concerts in a village this concert took place in the courtyard of a castle in the Netherlands.
You got to watch it, while you are scared and fidgeting aroung to handle it, your wife is mesmerised and ready to be carried away by Vikings- and there are still some of us around... The high notes Maria does is called "Kulning/Kulokk/Lalning", it is how Scandinavian herding women called in their cows from the high pastures for milking. When a call is made in a valley, it rings and echoes against the mountains. The animals, a number of whom wear bells tuned so that the livestock's location can be heard, begin to respond to the call, answering back and the sound of the bells indicates that they are moving down the mountain towards their home farm. The kulokks can belong to an individual, but are sometimes family-based and are handed down so that a family's cows know they are being called and thus respond. A number of calls contain names of individual (sometimes the "lead") animals, as herds are not very large. There is a really beautiful Swedish woman called Joana Jinton that has videos of her doing it.
It's hard to believe you guys have only done one reaction to Heilung. Try Alfadhirhaiti from this live performance - Everyone has done Krigsgladr, and In Madjan already.
No wonder the Roman Empire said "Eff this... Not going any further" 🤣Didnt they get slaughtered massively in a forrest and then their corpses were hung up on trees by the germanic tribes and left to see for the next romans that dare to come 😁💀 Definitely something you want to watch live to suck everything in or as some ambient at home once in a while and not listen to in the car. Maybe check out Blind Guardian with their songs Bard's Song and Valhalla live at Wacken open air. Amazing show.
Wow, if they performed this during 14th century, surely they'd be accused of witchcraft and be burnt, lol 😁🙏 I really love folk music from different part of the world, they sound unique, original and "tasty" at the same time ❤️❤️❤️ I've heard Celtic and Irish music b4, but this is my first time listening to Nordic, very "viking-y" 👍 Love it ❤️❤️❤️
I believe its more the way of living than doing performance on that era before the power of capitalism use r'eligions' to burnt iit ironic those kind knowledge like doing humming is a method to produce your own immune system, by our own body (nitric oxide) but capitalism said its a witch ritual 😅 I have found the Lifa lyrics in this performance have a similarity with another part of the world afar away from viking land. The way of life with "Bhinneka Tunggal lka Tan Hana Dharma Mangrwa". I glad this chanel introduce me to this performance
@@kkjohannes7742 truly believe and agree with what you said 🙏 I really apologize for the misunderstanding ... what I meant in my comment, I just wanna highlight such strong spiritual vibe delivered in the video - so strong that (probably) would make religious ppl in 14th century believe it's an act of witchcraft 🙏 I personally "don't care" about what had happened in the past - I mean, I see them as part of history - and definitely no judging between right or wrong I see the video as part of spiritual tradition and culture - totally super fine with it as an Indonesian - a country where many ppl still believe traditional mistical, spiritual (non religious), both black and white magic - voodoo types of magic, having ritual or offering to type of spiritual form, believe in sacred places, undertanding which one is taboo or not, etc etc - these things are super common, which obviously also have to face "rejection" from religious ppl, one accuse another, or vice versa really ... this "arm wrestling" between religion vs traditional belief is no surprise even todays, so I do understand the situation It's too common till sometimes I tend to make joke of them 😁✌️My comment is more like a sarcasm actually, that's why I put "lol" at the end 😁🙏 Once again, I'm sorry if my comment sounds offending for some ppl ... Peace ❤️
their name is pronounced “hi-lung” it means “healing” in german. kai, the man that does the throat singing is an actual shaman. at the opening of all their rituals / concerts, they have a small ceremony, “remember that we all are brothers. all people, and beasts, trees, stone and wind. we all descend from the one great being, that was always there. before people lived and named it. before the first seeds sprouted.” i highly recommend listening through all of their discography, especially everything off of lifa.
The European metalheads have arrived here in search of faster, harder, louder. Heilung released on a metal label and there are even more bands like that there. If you want to understand metal, you have to listen to bands like Heilung. The band consists of the German Kai Uwe Faust, the Dane Christopher Juul and the Norwegian Maria Franz. All the others are live musicians. They met in the reanactment scene, where they wear similar costumes and try to live according to the times. That's why nothing seems staged here. The metal growls are technically the same as traditional Mongolian singing. The Mongolians also try to use their normal vocal cords at the same time. This also had negative consequences for one or two singers. Because there was no musical notes at the time of the Vikings, their music is largely unknown. Written texts also only appeared in the Middle Ages. There are traditional songs, but it is not known how they have changed over the last 3,000 years. They are also not known to have used gutural singing. This is a modern performance, with 3000 years of musical experience, that reflects our idea of the Viking Age.
It maybe too close to traditional for some, including me. I enjoy some wardruna and I love eivor, they've recently done a concert together, which includes music from assassin's creed. Valhalla.....
Heilung, as they itselves say, its "Amplified History". Also, "Heilung", means "healing". Maybe you yourselves are not (fully) aware of this, but I noticed, as I looked at you in the video, your own hearts reacting to the Ancestral Spirits being called upon, your own blood boiling cold, resonating, slowly awakening your ancient suppressed Genes, feeling ALIVE again after MILLENNIA...! Just REMEMBER: "The Returning Ones"
If you liked this, try “Krigsgladr” or “In Madjan” from the same live performance!
And there one can watch Maria playing the bones, and AFAIK she uses human bones.

This for example is described by Ibrahim Ibn Yaqub al-Tartushi, a traveler and merchant of the 19th century, who writes that the people of Hedeby sang in a barking manner.
An eleventh I know,
if needs I must lead
To the fight my long-loved friends;
I sing in the shields,
and in strength they go
Whole to the field of fight,
Whole from the field of fight,
And whole they come thence home.
A fifth I know,
If I see from afar
An arrow fly 'gainst the folk;
It flies not so swift
That I stop it not,
If ever my eyes behold it.
[Hariuha laþu laukar gakar alu ole lule laukar] It is possibly a kind of word puzzle, built to cast a fertility spell. That spell could be sexual or also fertility for the earth.
Wow so mystical song.
Music from the Before Times. Dayum, they RAWKED!! \m/
They absolutely did!
The comments under their videos are absolutely hilarious. Laughed tears several times when I scrolled through them. 🤣
Something deep in your ancestral soul is stirring .
I like how every person I see reacting to Heilung is always confused in the beginning as to what they're gonna get into and there is ALWAYS a moment where the music clicks in the persons head. At that moment, you can see the wheels turning in the persons head. The moment in this reaction seemed to be at 3:20
"In Madjan" is featured in Hellblade II. Check it out!😊
I wish i could go to their show, so awesome.
I thought it was a headbang musiic return to you and see Taylor reaction 😁
watch more you will love it
Before: "But what if I hate it?"
After: "It's an eargasm."
I saw them live this year
hi! you mentioning hellblade; i’ve also played, & fun fact, heilung does the music for the trailer! the song is ‘in maidjan,’ which some people have mentioned already. but definitely react to it & see if you recognise the part of the song from the trailer!
For Valravn i would suggest a song called Koder Pa Snor
Valravn was Christophers band before Heilung
And Euzen is the Band Maria sings for in a clean voice and without antlers
Euzen with the song Metamorph.
you can continue your journey into nordic music with eivor live at the old theater in tórshavn, when she sings "falling free". this is what a master degree in traditional nordic vocal techniques sounds like
Maria Franz has such an amazing voice. Check out her other stuff such as Ulvertime with the band Songliekr or anything with the band Euzen.
Oh well. :)
I bet you've been listening to them since tho, maybe that's why no reaction?
Hi! Yes, we did actually react to one other, quite some time ago, and something happened and the video was corrupt. It frustrated us very badly and we haven’t covered anything else of theirs since then. But yes, we have listened to at least 1-2 others on our own time 😁
Now do "Anoana".
Yes please
Ditto on that...!
Hell yeah. That was quite a spooky, entrancing way to start off my day… not cold enough yet to start throwing on dead animal skins, but I definitely felt connection to animal base instincts. Enjoyed coming along the ride with you two… though I started with some dread and kinda agreed with K-McK, “it’s 10 minutes long, what if it sucks?” - wait, um bone collectors? ☠️ ☠️ I’m outta here!! 🙂🙃🙂 JK, y’all rock, and I’m up for more when y’all are…. valhalla, ValHallA, VALHALLA, MUTHAFUCKAZZZ !!! 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
Pretty sure they are doing the soundtrack for senua's sage hellblade 2
Krigsgladr will blow you away! 🙂

HEILUNG is more like proto-germanic/-norse not Viking mostly.
please react to heilung alfathirhaiti. is amazing!
Ritual Norske musik❤starts with smuggling
👏👏👏
Yes do Anoana
Guys do yourself a favour and study every song this band produces like it's an individual project to learn from. This band takes pieces of our ancient history and turn it into deep reflective performances, every word and every thing they present being important. I'm only starting but it is interesting how they even present it in ancient languages. Every single one of their performances verbarates through you and calms you while it causes you to reflect almost like their presenting old memories and wisdom that still lives deep within us. Just incredible.
I think they're pre Viking
The music from the game hellblade senua's sacrifice, is Heilung.
this is practically a "benediction" of the warriors by the female shaman or seer and it's beautiful to see them rising their shields like to protect her in exchange. by the way their music will be in the next Hellblade game and they don't sing in their language they sing in ancient languages like Old Norse and proto germanic which makes what they do even more difficult.
since you mentioned watching one of their concerts in a village this concert took place in the courtyard of a castle in the Netherlands.
HY BROTHER'S PLEASE REACTION CAKRA KHAN...I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN...❤❤❤THANKS
hi lovely @killermcknight awaited for your reaction of AGT final night which is currently happening now
You got to watch it, while you are scared and fidgeting aroung to handle it, your wife is mesmerised and ready to be carried away by Vikings- and there are still some of us around...
There is a really beautiful Swedish woman called Joana Jinton that has videos of her doing it.
great
It's hard to believe you guys have only done one reaction to Heilung.

Othan = Odin

Vote putri final 26 September
Wow, if they performed this during 14th century, surely they'd be accused of witchcraft and be burnt, lol 😁🙏
I really love folk music from different part of the world, they sound unique, original and "tasty" at the same time ❤️❤️❤️
I've heard Celtic and Irish music b4, but this is my first time listening to Nordic, very "viking-y" 👍 Love it ❤️❤️❤️
I believe its more the way of living than doing performance on that era before the power of capitalism use r'eligions' to burnt iit ironic those kind knowledge like doing humming is a method to produce your own immune system, by our own body (nitric oxide) but capitalism said its a witch ritual 😅
I have found the Lifa lyrics in this performance have a similarity with another part of the world afar away from viking land. The way of life with "Bhinneka Tunggal lka Tan Hana Dharma Mangrwa". I glad this chanel introduce me to this performance
@@kkjohannes7742 truly believe and agree with what you said 🙏 I really apologize for the misunderstanding ...
what I meant in my comment, I just wanna highlight such strong spiritual vibe delivered in the video - so strong that (probably) would make religious ppl in 14th century believe it's an act of witchcraft 🙏
I personally "don't care" about what had happened in the past - I mean, I see them as part of history - and definitely no judging between right or wrong
I see the video as part of spiritual tradition and culture - totally super fine with it
as an Indonesian - a country where many ppl still believe traditional mistical, spiritual (non religious), both black and white magic - voodoo types of magic, having ritual or offering to type of spiritual form, believe in sacred places, undertanding which one is taboo or not, etc etc - these things are super common, which obviously also have to face "rejection" from religious ppl, one accuse another, or vice versa
really ... this "arm wrestling" between religion vs traditional belief is no surprise even todays, so I do understand the situation
It's too common till sometimes I tend to make joke of them 😁✌️My comment is more like a sarcasm actually, that's why I put "lol" at the end 😁🙏
Once again, I'm sorry if my comment sounds offending for some ppl ... Peace ❤️
Peace. Salam Rahayu ☕
@@kkjohannes7742 lol 😉✌️
their name is pronounced “hi-lung” it means “healing” in german. kai, the man that does the throat singing is an actual shaman. at the opening of all their rituals / concerts, they have a small ceremony, “remember that we all are brothers. all people, and beasts, trees, stone and wind. we all descend from the one great being, that was always there. before people lived and named it. before the first seeds sprouted.”
i highly recommend listening through all of their discography, especially everything off of lifa.
try heilung alfadhirhaiti
Heilung - pronounced as HIGH-LUNG. Their name means “Cure”, in German!
Othan is another name for Odin//troutbumandsam
Hakkerscaldr is also a good one
Noted
Heilung, as they itselves say, its "Amplified History". Also, "Heilung", means "healing".
Maybe you yourselves are not (fully) aware of this, but I noticed, as I looked at you in the video, your own hearts reacting to the Ancestral Spirits being called upon, your own blood boiling cold, resonating, slowly awakening your ancient suppressed Genes, feeling ALIVE again after MILLENNIA...!
Just REMEMBER: "The Returning Ones"
Many cultures use throat singing, it's really not culturally specific
Please reaction heilung anoana please ❤
last time I heard this music ... I was being sacrificed to the Gods
It's more Shamanism from Scandinavia and Siberia - there it is an actuall Religion for some People ... ;)
now try reviewing their 'Anoana' video?
