I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 1,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. Some curiosities. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. The male singer with the deep voice is a great tattoo artist and very professional. The bones the girl plays with are human bones and sometimes they have had problems in the countries of the tour to introduce them through the border from the country where the concert was held. The song's title can be found in the Mesogothic Anglo-Saxon glossary as "In-Maidjan", which means "deceptively change" or "corrupt". This makes sense since the entire story within the album consists of a peaceful village that is corrupted by having to go to war. Therefore, Proto-Germanic seems to be the language. "Harigasti Teiwa" is a clear Germanic reference to the Negau helmet. This helmet contains several inscriptions including the words "harigasti teiwa which are the first words of the song. This could be translated as • Tyr, be Guest of our army", since this line was trying to invoke a God for war. The next chant are the names of the 24 Norse runes of the Elder Futhark. Your growls/throat singing is VERY good, sounds amazing! Really liked your reactions whenever something new came. They are such an amazing band!
Theres as many layers to the lyrics of this performance as there are layers to the actual singing/music. The opening line is inviting one of the proto norse gods to listen to them, then an incantation to help in their time of need, then the rune chant where theyre all in harmony, then the aftermath where its not words just impressionistic singing. The unspoken story could be (implied) a pre viking Scandinavian tribe being pulled into war, asking for the Gods blessings, and the battle happening during the rune chant. Where maria screams could be a tragedy happening, maybe the tribe lost, or suffered heavy casualties. The last bit being the aftermath, the survivors not wanting to talk about what happened. I think without knowing the meanings of the words most people can get some interpretation of whats happening (the rune chant doesnt really have a translation anyway, in the culture it comes from it is kind of like singing the ABCs but also a prayer or spell)

One of the reasons I'm looking forward with great anticipation for Senua's Sacrifice 2. Heilung did the music for the awesome trailer they released last year, as well.
I was so lucky to be at their first American show about a year ago. It was incredible, a total experience. I loved seeing your take on them, I hope you do more!

Funny you said that "The visuals give me heavy Tomb Raider Reboot/ Senuas Sacrifice vibes!", considering Heilung has been working closely with Ninja Theory (the devs behind Senua's Sacrifice) on a soundtrack for the sequel for that game :)
Heilung is an experimental folk music band made up of members from Denmark, Norway, and Germany. Their music is based on texts and runic inscriptions from Germanic peoples of the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Viking Age. Heilung describe their music as "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe". Their music is usually about Norse deities, jǫtnar, and valkyries. "" is a German word meaning "healing" in English.
Heilung is great. Their first live concert, LIFA live at Castlefest, was epic. Their songs are based on original texts and poems from the Viking age and earlier Bronze Age. Alfadhirhaiti Hamrer Hippyer And their new song Norupo
I love all the songs of the Lifa live performance and their newer studio albums. Some songs from Lifa that I haven't seen reacted to but are awesome include Alfadhirhaiti (wolves beckon the arrival of a war party, bristling with shields and spears, who engage in a loud conversation with the villagers), Hakkerskaldyr (a Viking Hakka, comparable to Maori and other Oceanian and Polynesian cultures), and Hamrer Hippyer (used as the grand finale, replete with elements from the other songs driving headlong to a roaring yet satisfying climax.) I might also recommend songs from some of the other Heilung Albums. Futha has some great songs in it. My favorites are Galgaldr (just... wow), Norupo (the video for this is fantastic!), and Elddansurin (this song sounds otherworldly, it is awesome!). Sam, something I would like to see you add if you do another Heilung reaction video is a more thorough explanation of how to throat sing in the manner Kai and Chris, as well as the other singers, employ. I did appreciate in this video you offered some demonstration of the technique, though. Thank you for putting together this video.
Maria Franz is an extremely talented woman, aside from Heilung she also sings in a band called Songleikr, where she does more normal style singing. You might want to try out the song "Ulvetime" by Songleikr. She is really different there but just as good
@19:56 It's called the Scandinavian herdingcall. Especially women in Norway and Sweden still do it for practical purposes. They go outside in the eavening and let their voices echo through the valleys in this mellodic pitchy way. When the cattle that roam free hear the sound they become curious and start walking towards the sound back to their home farms. In standard Swedish this "musical style" is called kulning. You can search for it on YT.
Nice reaction, thanks for that. I really love Heilung and as you say, it's art not only music - fantastic. I'm not a professional singer.. to be honest, I'm not even a singer at all, so I have a question. When the chant is starting at 10:07 that creates suspense in me, because they're singing the hole sentence without break, that's nearly 19 seconds. Is that an easy thing for a trained singer, or can only very gifted ones do that live on stage?
One of the lesser known "instruments" they use is a Bull Roarer, if you look close you'll see someone spinning something on a string over their head, it makes a cool droning sound.
It's interesting to see how this has developed over 5 years. They lost one male vocalist but gained 3 female vocalists, so now the band is 9 people so the arrangements of female voice, are more complex, and they also have a warrior band of 12, which really opens up the performance aspect into more complicated ritual elements. They have also become quite successful, which is great to see. Although I have no idea what its like to tour with this team of 21 people and a complicated and delicate set. Strange 'job' to get into that space every few nights.
I discovered these guys on a game trailer for hellblade 2. Since then I own, and constantly listen to, all of their stuff. Mad Aussie fan. If they ever come here, I’m going, no matter where they are and what the cost. Can you imagine being in that audience?
I was born in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein and live there. In the Middle Ages my homeland was Danish, now German. Because of this, I have a loving connection with my northern neighbors. P.S. It doesn't matter where you were born. Your character makes the man. We are ALL Barbarians. Ask the ancient Romans.Peace
Nice Reaction. Here a translation I found. Runic(??): "Tawol Athodu Ek Erilaz Owlthuthewaz Niwaremariz Saawilagar Hateka Harja." English: "I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon the one of the Sun to aid our army."
i know its an old upload but litle sad 😥that people just react to one of ther art peaces like to see more reactions to others like Krigsgaldr or my favorit Anoana
The drum isn't actually a bodhrán but it is a frame drum. A bodhrán is an Irish frame drum. Many parts of the world developed their own frame drums. Some are played with sticks, some with hands only. In this context, it would probably be referred to as a shaman drum. I think Heilung make their own.

I'd only ever seen Bodhran written down, didn't know that's how you pronounced it. You learn something new every day.
Thanks for reacting to Heilung!
Btw to all English speakers, Krigsgaldr means war magic.
These guys are awesome! Go buy a ticket to see them. They're playing the Barrowlands January 2023
Thumbs up for sawing baguettes' in half :D
They played Glasgow a few years back, was outstanding
They're coming back!
More heilung!! I recommend hamrer hippyer. So good and interesting stuff happening in this song👏🏻
Maria franz has all the serenity of a Goddess in the chaos of the ritual- and in that, she commands stillness to witness.
Well this amazing band was indeed used in Senuas Sacrifice. Good catch
This is the most metal thing ever.
"I dont know have those instruments. at one point it looks like an guys saw an baguette in half" you sir just made my day lol
You should listen to “Ulvetime”. It’s just Maria and Christopher but it’s absolutely magical
Come, guest Tyr

Best review I saw on this song!
Are you planning to review more of the Lifa liveshow?
I love Scotland. I hear it isn't as cool as it was when I lived there in the late '60s for two years.
One word to describe this experience: Atmosphere.
heilug lifa-live...for me, best ever recorded concert...
Remind me of Ramstein, I like them 👍
Please do MORE - wardruna and heilung
Its funny that you mention that it gives you Senua's Sacrifice vibes in the description, because they worked on the music for that game.
Nice Reaction. Here a translation I found.
Runic(??): "Tawol Athodu Ek Erilaz Owlthuthewaz Niwaremariz Saawilagar Hateka Harja."
English: "I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon the one of the Sun to aid our army."
When they all sing in unison they are reciting the Runes of Elder Futhark
"Some kind of Force of Nature" couldn`t have said it better myself. :)
Try out Traust next with a 2020 performance. Ritual is great.
Heilung needs to be on the Golden Record that was sent aboard Voyager 1
If you're having trouble listening to this group then you should look into getting a Troll Cross. It will help against Fae and tricky spells.
i know its an old upload but litle sad 😥that people just react to one of ther art peaces like to see more reactions to others like Krigsgaldr or my favorit Anoana
"I don't know what the words are..."

I literally just recorded a reaction to Dead Can Dance, so you won't have to wait long!
@@SSTVocalCoach haha nice! very much looking forward to that!
You must see Anoana from Heilung
so.... when can you teach me to do those sounds?
The drum isn't actually a bodhrán but it is a frame drum. A bodhrán is an Irish frame drum. Many parts of the world developed their own frame drums. Some are played with sticks, some with hands only. In this context, it would probably be referred to as a shaman drum. I think Heilung make their own.
Call the old gods, we got a banger!
