@@kg6itc I would wager this ritualized music and these vocal incantations got crazy on a level we can't even imagine. Every winter, when our ice age ancestors clung to their huts, hovels and longhouses for warmth; when there was plenty of time to carve bone, wood and rock, stretch and tan animal hide and jam out under the wild-eyed supervision of the people's shaman.
Back in the day, when no one complained if a track went for longer than 4 minutes... You are 100% right, though. It's in our DNA.

Throat singing comes from Tuva which is not really Mongol it is a weird little country between Mongolia and Russia. There is a movie called Tuva Blues that is about a blind man from New Orleans who found a tape from Tuva and learned how to do it very well so they brought him to Tuva to sing with the original singer. There is another aspect of tuvan throat singing not really reflected by this group. Not saying they suck or anything tho.

90% of warfare among the ancients was Psychological. As the Roman general Gaius Suetonius Paulinus:
"On the shore stood the opposing army with its densest array of armed warriors. Between the ranks dashed women, attired in black like the Furies with their hair disheveled, waving burning brands. All around them were Druids lifting up their hands to heaven and pouring forth dreadful implications. Our soldiers were so petrified by the unfamiliar sight that as if their limbs were paralyzed, they stood motionless, exposed to wounds." Hence the attire and vocals. Listening to this one and Hamrer Hippyer, I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been to witness if one had never seen such a thing.

for anyone curious about the song, Beth is correct when she said it was a chant. The song's title "In Maidjan" means "to change deceitfully" or "to corrupt". Which makes sense since the whole album is about a peaceful village being corrupted by having to go to war.
In Maidjan uses a proto-germanic language, so a perfect translation into English is a little difficult to find. The best I could find is:
    *"Come, guest Tyr*
    *For this invocation*
*I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon* *the one of the Sun to aid our army*
*Ha Hu Hi He Ho He Hi Ha Hu*
*Wealth, Aurochs, Thorn, Divine Breath, Travel,* *Torch,*
*Gift, Joy, Hail, Need, Ice, Harvest,*
*Tree, Luck, Elk, Sun, Creator, Birch tree*

    *Odin, prepare for battle!"*

They're trying to reproduce the music from way before the viking age, when Scandinavia had a lot of different shamanistic traditions. There hardly any knowledge of what pre-Germanic music actually sounded like, because when Christianity invaded the Scandinavian countries the missionaries made sure to kill off many of the people who practiced these old religions and rituals, and also since there wasn't any widespread writing culture yet(runes), very few descriptions of the music survived. This band of artists have tried to recreate it from accounts of old Roman and Celtic texts describing the "growling", rhythmic music of the pagans of the north. That long with findings of the actual instruments made of animal bones and inspiration from other, more known, tribal cultures this is what they came up with. Might be accurate, might not be.

No murders in the name of religion are mentioned, as far as I remember.

She has an amazing voice, in all honesty she’s what’s kept me interested in this group as a whole. I came for the throat singing, I stayed for the voice of the planet.
Because, please correct me if I’m wrong, it doesn’t seem like she’s trying to sing to be ‘pretty’. She sings to make you/us feel. Using ever tool in the vocal arsenal to achieve the purpose the song(?) needs. This group seems to purposely stay away from recognizable modern popular music techniques. Which is smart so it feels truly primeval, but gives this a distinct personality.
So often I’m exhausted with modern female singers, “oh I gotta to the power ballad to try and top the charts” or “I gotta do the crazy high note song now”. Just, ugh.

    "Necro" - dead

Necromancer -- Yes, could be a death wizard. Someone who uses magic to contact, control, resurrect or summon the dead.

    • @davidlfort

In the original Greek, the suffix "-mancy" referred to divination. Thus, a necromancer was one who learned the future by consulting thr dead (ghosts usually).
Modern English has lost this distinction. To us "-mancy" just means magic, so "necromancy" is death magic. Normally the animation of corpses.

Alfadhirhaiti is probably my favorite. Love the entire LIFA album though.

Yass, some great choices! Thank you! If you enjoy this, you'll definitely enjoy Eivor - Trollabundin, angelic voice + throat singing, delicious!

After that you just need to do Myrkur - Ulvinde, it is also pretty ancient, but it's singing, not shamanic chanting:)

In Maidjan is a War Chant, and the whole LIFA concert is the story of a peaceful people forced into conflict. Kai's throat singing is a perfect counter to Maria's etherial singing, and Christopher perfectly knits both together, making Heilung very much a sum of its parts.

It is not a war chant. It is chanting of the Elder Futhark. The only bit that has anything to with war is the is the beginning. Harigastitiewa. Taken from the carving on the Negai helmet (350BC). It is interpreted as Harigast the priest of Tiewas (aka the God Tyr).

@@odinseye268 Hmm, thought Krigsgaldr was a war chant or something.

@@Necronomous Yes. The translation of Krigsgaldr is Warrior Song, or Story. The commenter here is talking about the song In Maidjan
The story in Krigsgaldr is from the Eggja Stone that recalls a battle.

Ah, yes. In Maidjan not a war chant that I knew.
Also I got some more information about Krigsgaldr, thank you very much for the reply.
