@@cuttlefisch She's not released. She is sacrificed to Odin, in the traditional way - hanged, and stabbed with a spear. So far as I can tell, the "release" is meant to represent the spirit of the girl ascending to the spirit realm, at the same time as Groa's spirit descends from it to talk to her son Svipdag, and to bless him before the quest. The main chant is her blessings. So Heilung basically interpreted Grógaldr to include human sacrifice as part of the summoning ritual. The original doesn't describe the ritual itself - it starts with Svipdag addressing the spirit. But within the Norse religious framework, it makes sense - talking to the dead is serious business in general, and, of course, "soul for soul" has that transactional nature common of most pagan rites.
I was raised in a strictly Christian household. The feeling I get from Heilungs music is the feeling I assume my parents got from Christianity that I never felt.
Oh man am I a lucky boy to have these people in the same time frame as my own. I honestly didn't think they were going to make another album after their first one seeing as it was absolutely legendary, but here we are, blessed yet again.

@100Davros Bullshit. I'm such a big mestizo that the last person that was a full-something in my family died more than a century ago and I still can connect with my ancestors, wheter they are Native Americans, Blacks or Whites.
It is simply the repetitive rhythm and the harmonies. They help you relax and eventually slip into a trance-like status all the while your body activates its self-healing properties. All shamanic music from around the world is based on the same concept. I am NOT saying this is bad music, on the contrary, I love it. But t heritage and all that has absolutely nothing to do with it...
Given that we're learning more and more about genetic memory all the time, there might really be something to the idea of "feeling it in your bones". Whatever the case, it's certainly marvelous music.
@Denise Bond Ahahahah, no. Your simplistic style is quite telling. Read up on the topic of shamanistic music and chanting and its activation of the body's self-healing properties. But be warned: Not all texts have pictures, and most use furrin words with more than three syllables. Furthermore, read THE FUCK up on the band's message. Your misplaced and moronic hatred of anything left wing (and I am certainly not left wing) runs contrary to the band's attitude. So take a nice dose of STFU and quit stinking up the place. Because all you smell is your unwashed underwear, dear.
squarewave808 I feel just the same. I started writing a story about druids and celtic warriors against romans because I feel like I lived or I had ancestors living on those centuries.

For all the silly comments below......... I love Heilung's performance - when I first saw one of the videos (Krigsgaldr) my first thought is performance art. Surprised no one seemed to recognize the sacrificed girl's clothing is copied from the remains of the "Egtved Girl" c. 1390-1370, Nordic Bronze age, who was around 16-18 years old when she died. Her remains were found in a barrow grave outside Egtved, Denmark in 1924. The sacrificed girl on stage is not tied up and stabbed by a spear - someone below mentioned that and claimed it was a sacrifice to Odin or some nonsense. She is tied up and garroted, the way some bog body sacrifices were found, many were killed in very gruesome ways. She is then "raised" and brought to the spirit realm. It is believed some of the sacrificial victims volunteered to be sacrificed for the good of their people as their remains seem to show they may have been a member from higher in the social order. .

I’m so happy to see Native American folks in these comments saying how much this reminds me of their peoples’ traditional music. I’ve always had a deep respect for Native Americans, their culture, their history, their spirituality, and their respect and reverence of nature, and it’s only grown now that I’m a pagan. I would love to see #LandBack become a reality, and I think, as pagans, especially white American pagans, we should help fight for justice for Native American peoples and learn from them. Regardless of the color of our skin, our ancestral lineage, our religion, and we all share the same basic DNA and the same Earth, and, if you go back far enough, we all have the same ancestors too.

@Do you mind .... SARS-CoV-2 isn't a pandemic but a simple influenza (in fact, the winter flu of 2018 killed more patients than this one did!) The hospitals in Germany are empty, the sentinel surveillance hasn't found ANY SARS-CoV-2 pathogen in the tests they run since mid April, yet the public isn't being informed about this. The numbers they publish week after week are cumulated, not adjusted - they ought to detract everyone who doesn't show any more symptoms, for example, but they just amass crazy amounts of data. The PCR tests used in Germany show an error rate of up to 75%! A whole dozen of my family that's living all around the world are health care professionals, yet *no one* has seen a case of death from Covid-19 - people die from pre-existing illnesses. We are forced to wear a mask that covers mouth and nose - the material doesn't matter. Have you ever thought about that?! What kind of pathogen doesn't fit through cotton fabric? And if you wear these contraptions for more than 20min., they are moist with your own breath and generate a breeding ground for bacteria/fungi. All business insolvencies that occurred from the weeks long lockdown are prohibited from liquidating until our elections are done in February - then, people will see the true extent of this madness; experts expect an economic crisis the likes of 90 years ago, during the Great Depression. The funeral homes in Germany published decreasing numbers even - over 2 million operations have been canceled since February (operations cause a fair amount of deaths) , to make room for thousands of Covid-19 patients, which never came. If you want to know what a pandemic is really like, google the Spanish influenza of 1918 and compare it with the so-called Corona Pandemic...see the difference! Use the internet for knowledge, not the TV!

Saw them live in Silver Spring Maryland. Extremely spiritual performance and I have never felt more primitive and connected. There is a reason behind everything they do on stage.
At their Portland, Oregon show the female member was is being sacrificed was topless/body paint the whole show, seemed very authentic for the time period. What a great experience it was to see this group.
I also went to the Portland show (amazing experience), It looks like it's the same woman as the Portland show. Since they tour in a lot of countries it might be a certain country/venue not allowing a topless performance. Or they might have just changed it since then, she seemed way more buff and female warrior like with the same paint and outfit as the male warriors.

First verse is a spell to free warriors from bonds.
The repeated chant from the rest of the group pertains to the Helm of Awe.

The bulk of the lyrics are from the Svipdagsmál.

The girl being sacrificed can be seen as the vessel for the spirit of Groa. She then stands upon her burial mound casting her spells and then departs.

And thy mouth of words full wise.
Thank you.
Thank you 🙏🏽💗
Thank you for that. What's the significance of the young girl being tied up and then released?

100Davros Bingo. FIGHT THEM.
@100Davros Bullshit. I'm such a big mestizo that the last person that was a full-something in my family died more than a century ago and I still can connect with my ancestors, wheter they are Native Americans, Blacks or Whites.
Although I don't understand a word I find this music fasinating, almost spell binding. I love it

@@828enigma6 you're American so you can't lol
Absolutely amazing they have done it again! Spell binding and mesmerizing!
I feel like this music activates something on an epigenetic level, some dormant genes from our ancestors 1500 years ago.
also feel it, literally lifts up my energy levels

Seeing them perform this song live must be otherworldly
It is believed some of the sacrificial victims volunteered to be sacrificed for the good of their people as their remains seem to show they may have been a member from higher in the social order. .
lol I'm three years late, was just commenting the same thing, but with less info. Thank you for the info refresh! I'm honestly in love with that skirt lol.
This band and this music has totally captivated me. Very glad I found them.
The audio in this video does not do them justice. Not even close. Love these guys. Especially Maria :)

Just discovered this in the middle of a Pandemic. Comforting in a time of fear and uncertainty.
Do not fear. Death smiles at us all. The only thing you can do is smile back.
Covid isn't staged
The term "uncertainty" has been so
abused the last month, I cannot hear it anymore. What do you have to fear, except your government?

Simply stunning.
English translation:
Once sat women, they sat here, then there.
Some fastened bonds, some impeded an army,
Some unraveled fetters:
Escape the bonds, flee the enemy!
Then first I will chant thee
The charm oft-tried,
That Rani taught to Rind;
From the shoulder whate'er
Mislikes thee shake,
For helper thyself shalt thou have.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then next I will chant thee,
If needs thou must travel,
And wander a purposeless way:
The bolts of Urth
Shall on every side
Be thy guards on the road thou goest.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then third I will chant thee,
If threatening streams
The danger of death shall bring:
Yet to Hel shall turn
Both Horn and Ruth,
And before thee the waters shall fail.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then fourth I will chant thee,
If come thy foes
On the gallows-way against thee:
Into thine hands
Shall their hearts be given,
And peace shall the warriors wish.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then fifth I will chant thee,
If fetters perchance
Shall bind thy bending limbs:
O'er thy thighs do I chant
A loosening-charm,
And the lock is burst from the limbs,
And the fetters fall from the feet.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then sixth I will chant thee,
If storms on the sea
Have might unknown to man:
Yet never shall wind
Or wave do harm,
And calm is the course of thy boat.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then seventh I chant thee,
If frost shall seek
To kill thee on lofty crags:
The fatal cold
Shall not grip thy flesh,
And whole thy body shall be.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then eighth will I chant thee,
If ever by night
Thou shalt wander on murky ways:
Yet never the curse
of a Christian woman
From the dead shall do thee harm.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Then ninth will I chant thee,
If needs thou must strive
With a warlike giant in words:
Thy heart good store
Of wit shall have,
And thy mouth of words full wise.
(Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.)
Once sat women, they sat here, then there.

Being of Viking descent (Danish Viking) this music truly does make me feel connected to my ancient ancestors. Very awesome.
Same at the show tonight in Chicago
Same in MTL tonight :) Now im ready to sack a village.
Same. She was topless in LA, as well.
How can you be certain that it's authentic for the time period? Did you live in northern Europe in 600 BC something ?
