I feel it every single fucking time someone starts typing on their noisy-ass keyboard, ESPECIALLY without noise suppression on, thereby unraveling my brain noodle by noodle into a catatonic mess that can't even vocalize much less speak. I miss RTX Voice like I miss life without COVID.
I'm shocked how many people dislike the Voxel sprites, i personally have never seen 2d sprites so faithfully represented in 3d, often when you take screenshots you could argue it looks like a 2d sprite :D the blood does look out of place but i think the enemies look amazing as well, especially the Cacodemons look SICK. I get that that's a matter of taste tho.
Agree on the blood issue, they look like they explode in red jello, lol. Thankfully, I think, you can disable it. Also, some light sources are too bright. I know, "well, it's about lightning", yes, but on some of them their brightness is too high that you can barely tell the original colors. I hope there's a setting to lower the intensity. The rest looks really good :)
I grew up with doom and love the 3d voxels when playing with a free camera. In the regular game it is hard to tell they're even 3d! And you can enhance the effect even more with a scanline filter. Unfortunately the ray traced version makes the fact that these are 3d voxel models pretty obvious.
The voxel enemies are a pure upgrade, faithful to the original. Not liking them is just having bad taste. The strawberry jam blood, on the other hand, is pretty garish, and I could do without it.
I'd be curious how Duke Nukem 3D would work with this. My favorite parts of that game are the level with the cranes and conveyor belts that pick up barrels and bodies, and the level with a ring of teleporters that you can fire a rocket through, and the multiple levels with non-euclidean geometry.
@@Foxtrop13 Not really. Doom 3 is notoriously over-dark because whilst it did a brilliant job of casting accurate shadows from dynamic light sources, it has *no* bounce lighting at all!
Brutal doom is utterly badass. It’s just so well done. Mouse look is just what doom needed without that you feel so restricted not even being able to look at your target.
There was a previous Doom RT mod, and it used the sprites. The problem with the sprites is that they aren't 3d and so it caused graphical artefacts. The use of voxels to put the original sprites in a 3d space is a great way to solve that problem, and when I saw voxel doom I was hoping someone would do something just like this.
Id releasing the source code for this game has probably helped so many programmers/devs etc. learn some of their (future) trade over the years, and still does. I love what people continue to do with this game.
it's always minecraft-y retro games with tons of flat surfaces that make RT look incredible. for modern 3d games i need a side-by-side to even tell a difference
The voxel models are done by Chillo/Cheelo (now). It's a separate mod and is incredible, he's also talented in Blender and he's done the model for the protagonist of my game as well.
there was a game in the 90s called "magic carpet" that game would be absurd with this approach, especially the sequel that had like three times the content nice video lvlcp
You can´t have volumetric fog in space. It would not be space you know. Nebulas look like black space from the inside. You see them from the outside because they are light years of tenuous hydrogen clouds... but those clouds are actually MORE vacuum than the Moon surface.
Simply impressive!!! We can see in Classic DOOM and other older games, which received Ray Tracing upgrades, the power that the application of lighting technology can have in a game. A real spectacle.
Your in luck descent 1 RTX exists. How ever there is 1 small problem its built for the shareware episode in mind; it supports custom d1 maps but mind you if you force PBR on the missing textures (from levels 8 and on from retail if you drop your copy in the RTX folder it will look flat) The context for its release was it was a school project and the guy ran out of time. Still cool non the less but with RTX remix tools will do a much better job I reckon
This version of doom, needs the PS1 versions sound track, so much atmosphere/darkness////makes it more creepy, perfect for the PSX versions ambience and more spooky music.
I think the handmade Voxel Models were done with such love and care. Really kept the feeling of the original while taking out the immersion break of having dead demon feet always facing you.
I would love to see the original Rage modified like this. John Carmack last game he worked on and it’s one of my favorites. He was definitely ahead of his time back then however there is definitely room for this type of improvement.
I've been playing Doom II since 1994 and this is the first time I've been jaw-agape when seeing a mod for it. This is genuinely what a remake of an old game should be.
Man this looks sick, thanks for covering it. Wouldn't mind Heretic or Hexen updated like this. I never payed those games as much as I did Doom but I think they'd be cool with this update.
I really want to see someone make a RTX mod for Doom 3. The lighting in that game is already crazy good, I can only imagine giving it ray traced reflections and all the other things that come with it.
I agree with many of the points you were saying; the blood looks a bit strange - it should splat over the place, rather than like miniture paint bomb. I do feel the some of the textures could have been sharpen too - take the sky texture, which can be 30-40% of the screen (and yets looks like a 320x320 texture). Im not sure on the voxel sprites either; they are better than the 2D spirites, but really need 3D models. The author has done a really good job generally - with a few more tweaks could be even better. I cant fault the ray-tracing look, they got that spot-on!

Ishar III. --- I have some kind of special nostalgy to this game because it was the first Original game box which my friend owned and borrowed it to me to install nad play (30+ years ago - 486s pre-Pentium times). First time I was holding the PC game in my hands. I sometimes play the game even today, but it's kinda pain in the ass to run on modern HW. The game wasn't perfect in all aspects, but it had a great atmosphere with day/night cycle changing... etc. From "boxy" dungeons like Dungeon Master, that was a huge step and you felt like "you were really there" (at least as a little kid). I would love to see that game "reworked"...
I played the original doom as a kid, and probably every major shooter afterwards...but somehow I never, ever, played doom II. Well, this RTX mod made me go out and buy the game, and I'm on maybe mission 9 now, it's great!
Damn!! I would say the blood looks funny, but everything else looks just PERFECT!! The only other game that deserves such a makeover (maybe it got it already?) is Heretic 1.
I have tried it and it is strikingly… impressive! Want to highlight the level of performance, which is FAR better than in Quake 2 RTX. Game runs with quite considerable amount of FPS, unlike Quake.
I think the blood looks a little weird. Like it just spawns in place after an enemy dies, its kinda like the fake blood you'd see in a violent LittleBigPlanet level, lol.
Pretty sure that's project brutality not just brutal doom😅 brutal doom doesn't have the helmet hud, the flashlight or that shotgun(the first one) as far as I can remember.

The first time I've ever felt loss for not owning an RTX card and it's for fucking Doom 2. Classic.

Heretic would be a logical remix title, as it uses the Doom engine

My first experience with anything Doom related was Chex Quest. So yeah I agree, lets get Chex Quest RTX.

It's very easy to turn off the weird, ugly blood effect. It's an in-game option. It's easy to turn that off and you can keep everything else.
The mod doesn't add voxels, those were already done by Cheello for the entire Doom 1 and 2 sprite list.
