  • Testing and reviewing the jsb KO slugs and the pb mako slugs in .177 through the airmaks katran.
    outdoor testing at sub12 power levels didnt go to plan, but i will revisit the testing at a later date with an air rifle i think might be better suited to the application, the Anschutz 9015.

    You failed? Hardly 😂.
    The mako slugs have been tested in a few of my UK limited and FAC rifle's , no joy, just another experience.
    The jsb 13 grain knocked out are a different ball game in FAC, speed is needed. I like them, just not suitable for UK power restrictions.
    Look up some of the Scandinavian guy's using .177 knock out. FAC and running at around 925 FPS, 40mm group and less at 100m.
    Well done and thanks for your efforts 👍.
    You have saved a few guys some valuable beer tokens.

      Thats amazing Mark cheers. Made my day that has 😉
      I'm going to re test them through a few of my other rifles as they wouldn't load nicely from the ss loader in the katran. So it wouldn't have been a fair appraisal of them. I've just been putting together a stock for the 9015 before bringing that onto the channel going forward 😀

    The energy of the projectile is very low! 16 Joules, /11.8ft/lbs/! The 640ft/s is very low for a 13gn slug projectile + the trajectory of the projectile is very curved. The Slugs, usually need more! I have seen several tests in connection with the slug test! At a low speed of the slug, for example, 630-650 f/s, it gave a bad shoting gruops at 50-100 yards, but much better at around 900-920 f/s! Maybe it depends on the slug, I don't know, but those tests were also done with JSB and H&N slugs in 177 caliber, 13-16 and 20gn projectile weights! The heavy Slugs /16-20gn/ These are very good for long-range target shooting, you just have to provide them with a relatively high starting speed, otherwise they are unstable! For example 920-950 ft/s is good! /I'm not talking about hunting, I condemn hunting!/ I only focus on target shooting for home!

    I tried the lightest of the Zan slugs in .177 through my sub-12 HW100, very similar results. I put 28 (two mags) through a thoroughly leaded barrel and it looked like I'd fired a shotgun at the target, put a couple of pull-throughs down the barrel and tried again. It got worse. I don't think sub-12 is enough power to engage the slug with the rifling properly so they don't spin fast enough to be stable. Given that they were twice the price at the same weight as the Bisley Mags I usually use, pellet on pellet at fifty metres, I gave up on them. Fun experiment though. Oh and they were shite though my HW97 too.

  • @beanaddict

    Very interesting review, I have tried using a brand of slugs through my FX Impact and for the price was totally disappointed in the results.
    Absolutely no grouping to speak about, every shot different. I was using the 21 shot magazine and thought what a waste of money.
    Your explanation of the probe pushing the pellet into the barrel and the shape of the slug lends me to think they were going in cock eyed.
    I might try manually loading them to see if the results are different. Many thanks

      I called it pretty well in this video, have you seen the next slug video I did? The performance I had when directly loading to the barrel was quite impressive, in particularly strong winds too. But.. the tolerances it seems to get the smaller cal slugs loaded nicely in the first place appear very critical. It's fun trying these things out, and if you can get them to work a decent slug shows some definite downrage improvement over a diablo pellet. Albeit a small amount

    I have been testing different slugs here in the States for a while, but all, so far, in Sub 12. I have actually gotten some very good results with both the Knockouts and the Makos. One example I remember, really blew my mind: The HW95 currently shooting at around 9fpe shot the 10ish grain Knockouts into a single hole at around 25 meters! Just insane. Have also had great results shooting the Makos out of my UK specked (Sub 12) Daystate Revere. Heck! I have shot a couple squirrels with them and not only did the shot hit true, on point, my gosh, the results were devastating. I did post the results to my channel if you feel inclined to see.
    Of course, not every gun liked them, but that is always the case, even with pellets. Anyway, my mission will continue.

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  Год назад +2

      The daystates are interesting as they seem to show alot of promise with the slugs, the barrels in the redwolf for instance seem to do pretty well.
      It doesn't surprise me with the springer really. Being able to load and seat the slug direct to the barrel is a good start. Jumping them through a mag and over a barrel oring isn't ideal, as you just can't guarantee they are loaded true in the barrel. All good fun though trying 😀

  • @xWILZTAx
    @xWILZTAx 2 года назад +1

    Good video, i just don't understand the point of slugs tbh. If you have a FAC you'd just run subsonic 22lr over slugs and the other problem is, even if they run well through the anschutz, it's not something you'd take out rabbiting so kinda defeats the object of using slugs.

    • @garymurray5361

  • @steved5356

    If you are shooting 12ft lbs, accuracy is limited by range, and is why diablo pellets are super accurate up to 30-40 yards. Some 12ft lbs rifles have great accuracy up to 50yards or so. However, If you need accuracy at 100+ yards, slugs are defo the way to go due to lower ballistic coefficient but you need FAC power to make them stable and accurate. Some Manufacturers are starting to look at slugs for 12ftlbs so future might be brighter one day but I suspect it will still be limited by range, where diablo pellets will always out perform slugs on accuracy.

      There is likely some lead free slugs out there somewhere.ive not seen any myself as yet though.
      The twist rates of most our commonly available barrels are going to be alot slower than is idea for what a lead feee slug will weigh and size up at though. There's some really good info on the net about it. Its heavy reading but super interesting. The actual speed the slugs run at.. its somewhat a myth they need the higher fps for stability, they can happily run much slower than is accepted as fact. There's many other factors that are way more important to consider, well before the fps is even taken into account 😉
