How to mix your paints for the perfect dutch pour acrylic pour painting

- ** please note: when speaking I mixed up the terms "viscosity" and "pigment". Viscosity means how thick the paint is and pigment means how much of the color, or pigment is in the paint. **
In this video I'll walk you through detailed steps for how I like to mix my dutch pour paints. My basic ratio is 2 parts American Flood Floetrol, 1 part paint, and water to thin. I'll show you how I measure...or don't measure...my pouring medium to paint ratio, how I mix and how I determine when the paints are the right consistency to achieve a gorgeous dutch pour painting. I'll also show you how to determine how much paint and water to add for different brands and different thicknesses of paints. Stay until the end to see how I test my mixed paints using the drip test and what to do if they don't match.
I hope you find this video helpful. Please let me know if you have any further questions by dropping them in the comments section below.

One year ago! My Oh My! Well, Becca, my wife, and I are watching, learning and loving every minute of your instruction,
THANK you sooo much! - You are an excellent artist and teacher! ~
Glad it was helpful! And thank you for your encouragement.
Strainer on the bottle opening. Brilliant, only a few weeks in the game and never considered that. Thanks!
Glad to help!
One of the best tutorials I've seen for mixing paint - and I've seen quite a few over the last couple of years! Very helpful and informative and explained in a manner that is simple and easy. Only thing is it's a little bit hard to see your measuring clearly with the background being white but with your explanations it didn't matter too much. Thank you Becca 😊😊
Thanks!
This is all me! I'm here for the technical stuff. I feel it's so important and no one ever goes over it. Ever. I own a spa and constantly find that everyone that has been in any field for a long time was never taught the why of everything. It's so important. Ty
I’m glad you found it helpful!

Great recipe Becca! I’m the same way, I hate measuring lol. I’ve been doing it for about 18 months now and it’s all by feel and good to know I’m doing it very similar to you and getting the same consistency 🎨. Thanks for sharing!
Helpful video Becca, thank you! I haven't been getting my paint consistencies perfect (also an intuitive mixer...) - this should help a lot 😊
Thank you so much!!!!! This was really helpful! I love the way you compare the paint consistency- I’m going to start doing that!
You are so welcome!
So detailed and helpful, especially the clever trick of testing the runs on paper. Thank you!

I’m so glad you found this helpful!
Fabulous tutorial. Your explanations are very clear. I’m a newbie, so I really appreciate it. Thank you.
You are so welcome! When I stated I must have watched 50 videos to try to figure it out, so I decided to make one that I wish existed when I started. I’m so glad you found it helpful!
My first time to watch you Becca and I really like that you take time to ensure we follow what you are doing. So thank you. I will watch you more often. Especially thank you for the stocking strainer. That really helps a lot.
You are so welcome! I love the stocking strainer too!
I am new to paintpouring art and this is very easy to understand, Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thank-you Becca. I am happy to say I found your channel. Your tip re paint flow consistency is very helpful and appreciated. Your at ease, natural approach reminds me of generous Olga Soby.
Wow!! What a compliment. I really admire Olga Soby and have learned so much from her.

Excellent video. I just started doing acrylic pouring and your video has been the most helpful that I’ve seen. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank You so much! This helps to to understand how to & approximately how much! I have have been searching for this a long time, I do prefer the ounces measurements! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant! To test to see how the paint runs on the card. I never would have thought to do that.
I learned that from other RUclips artists.
Thank you ! Super info !
Glad it was helpful!
Love the No trace but No divet description of consistency ❤❤ I have done only a few Dutch Pours & some were good, some not so much 😢 but learning correct consistency. Thank you Becca !!
It definitely takes time to get the hang of.
Great paint mix video. Mixing seems to be the hardest part. It's like house painting..the prep is key to having a pleasant experience and the best end result.
Very true!
I just found you..and subscribed…thank you for your help
Very interesting. Thanks.

Well done!!
Great info, and I love the way you demonstrated everything! I'm new, and I need all the help I can get!
Welcome to the fluid art community!
Thank you, ma'am! :) @@beccaharkinsart
LOVE the idea of using the toe of a nylon to strain the Floetrol! Thanks so much for sharing this as well as your mixing process.
You are so welcome!
Yes! That was a super helpful tip.
Amazon has a strainer lid for Floetrol that screws on, and you can keep on and put the main lid back on over it. Tracie Reed may have them, too. I started with a piece of a nylon stocking, but it sagged too much when I would pour it.
@@emilyflotilla931 thanks for the tip!
Newbie here - why do you need to strain flotrol?
Thank u so much love ur videos xxneeded to see the proper amound of paint i can only get pouring medium here in lreland xx
You are so welcome
Great video! Should have watched this first!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much!
I've been doing the same thing with the stockings to strain it as I use it. It's so easy and efficient. I do the same thing on paints, too, if I happen to catch on to the bottle of paint containing "things" of various sorts within it. One time I had Artist Loft bottles of white that had little things in the paint. It took me a while to figure out where it was coming from as I kept getting these tiny little blobs all through my dried paintings. It was so annoying. Eventually I figured out it was those bottles of white it was coming from, and I put the panty hose strainer on them. It works like a charm! Great minds figure out the same sorts of things. 😉 Yes, definitely - get the floetrol in, then the paint, mix that up, and THEN start mixing in bits of water, a little at a time so you don't over do it accidentally. Fixing that is not as easy as just doing it gradually and stopping when it is correct in consitency. I've noticed that works best for me as well, and, like you, LOL, I did not start out having that realization. I sure did NOT start out putting in the products in that order back in the beginning! LOL 🤣 But doing it other ways was a fabulous teacher. Great video! 🥰
Great information!! Thank you for sharing. I just found your channel and I am looking forward to watching more videos.
Be well 😊
Welcome aboard! I post a new video once a week. Let me know if there is any particular content you’d like to see!
Another awesome tutorial & my thanks + subscribed.😊
Thanks for the sub!
Your last test shows the viscosity. The gold is highly pigmented and the magenta is thicker, really viscous and a lower pigment. a very nice demo.
Brilliant! Thank..
Gosh that was really helpful - thx!
Glad it helped!
Спасибо большое за советы!!! )))😍
I really enjoyed that, I have been messing.
Hope you found it helpful!
This is a great demonstration for mixing paints. I love that you did the super up-close view. Great job in getting those shots in! I have noticed when I let my mixed paints sit on the shelf for a few days or longer they tend to thicken a little. I usually do a new test before I just jump in and use the paints on an actual canvas from pre-mixed paints I had ready and adjust if needed. Maybe your experience is different? Love the video.
Yes, I do find that some of them thicken up, in particular the darker colors.
New sub!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️!!! I have gone through so many Dutch pouring artists not understanding, how much floetrol and paint ti use for this technique!!! I have tried and failed a few times and am rather bored with flip cups. I gave a learning and cognitive issue, pretty badly and get frustrated when people don't fully explain how much to use!!! Thank you!!!
I’m so glad to hear it was helpful! I’d love to see your dutch pour when you get around to it.
@beccaharkinsart I tried it once. Came back to your channel again. I failed but gonna do it on a bigger canvas...
Thank you Becca. You are amazing. I can't wait to try your method. Can you explain how to make the base colors and the consistencies as well? thanks
Base colors are mixed the same as all the other colors!
Good lesson and demonstration. I did mu first dutch pour today (if I can call it that) but my paint was much thicker. I'll know what to do different tomorrow.
So glad it was helpful! Find me on Instagram and send me a DM with your painting. I’d love to see it!
❤ so helpful ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I’m so glad this lesson was helpful. I try to be thorough and concise so I don’t waste anyone’s time. 😊 I’d love to see what you make when you try it.
Thank you for saying where to get Floetrol. I have been looking in wrong places. Very helpful video..
You’re welcome 😊
Hi Becca! I actually just sent you a message on Facebook.
I've been doing fluid art for about 3 years and have tried and tried to get this technique down. Your video is the closest and most consistent that I've came! Thank you SO SO MUCH!
I'm going to spread the word and let people know that this is the video to watch. It helped me so much and I am so thankful. I think that nobody else gets as close as you got to the camera with the cups so that we could really see in there and see the consistency for ourselves. Or at least that's how I feel!
I do you have one question now though. I feel like my edges are too hard. They need to be more wispy, if that makes sense. Does that mean that my consistency still is not fluid enough? Will send pictures of what I'm talking about in the Facebook message.
Much love from Myrtle Beach South carolina!
Megan, I’m so glad you found this video helpful! That was my goal 😊 I’ll check out your FB message and see if I’m able to help.
Also thank you for sharing this video! 😁
I'm with you on this !
BINGO Becca !
Just stumbled on your channel and I’m so glad I did. I have a Cricut cutting machine and I switch between projects so sometimes I forget how to do things such as mix the paints. I remember watching Olga and other Dutch pour artists and they all seemed to have a different approach to mixing the paints. You, however, have taken away my confusion. Thanks for the simple instructions. I’m currently working on my craft room organizing and now I can’t wait to get done so I can start doing the painting again. The only thing I noticed was that sometimes, when you were showing the paints, the camera didn’t pick it up. It was maybe too high. I am definitely subscribing and will be watching.
I’m glad you found it useful! I’m always striving to improve little by little every day. Thanks for your feedback.
Thank you 🙏
Welcome!
Thank you..😊😊😊
You’re very welcome!
Good video, I always have a problem when they say add water to consistency but never sure how much to add.
Excellent ! Do you have a video on how you mix and lay down your base coat ? Thank you !
I mix my base coat the same as all my other paints.
Good video😊
Thanks 😁
Hi Becca I am thoroughly enjoying your videos and always learn so much. I wonder if you could explain your mix that you keep in your squirt bottles ? I ask because I have yet to see recipes for large batch preparation for squirt bottles and on the other hand that you shouldn’t mix large quantities because pouring medium and Floetrol should not be left for too long before using ?
I have never had any problem with mixing in squirt bottles. I have had paint sit for months and be just fine!
Hi Becca, love, love your work. When including a metallic paint in your pour, do you seal with a satin or gloss varnish? And where do you sign your name? I'm thinking on the bottom or back of the frame. Please let me know what medium you use. Many thanks
Generally I think the metallic paint looks better with gloss varnish, but it kind of depends on the overall look of the painting.
Hi Im à newbie Floetrol 14.99 Wow ! I bought m'y first gallon 46.99 plus 15%tax that is what We pay here in Québec CAD, lol... completely nuts 😂 Thank you for sharing your expertise ! 🙏
I know! It is soooo expensive outside of the US!
Hi Becca, great tutorial for mixing Dutch pour paint. Do you use the same mix for your base colour? Many thanks Vicky from Suffolk, UK
Yes I do!
Thank you for the instructive video, my husband ordered me a density meter have you ever used one?
I haven’t! You’ll have to let me know how you like it!
Hi Becca
Do we have to mix silicone before pouring to create larger cells?
I don’t usually use silicone, but yes, if you mix it thoroughly into you paint before pouring it will create cells.
Thank you so much! Please share your base color mix. Same consistency? Great tutorial!
I mix my base colors with the same recipe, however I like to make them just a little bit thicker than the pour colors. If it is too thin the colors will sink beneath your base.
That's what I'm doing wrong!!! Mixing my base too thin & my colors disappear!! So glad I read thru all the comments. I've watched countless videos on mistakes & how to fix them. May I suggest u do a short tutorial on the base paint & different situations u could run into...what might happen if too thick, too thin, how thick to make ur base for a dutch pour, same with a kiss pour, etc. Thank u so much!!!
I don't mean to correct you, but "Viscosity" refers to the thickness of the paint. I think the word you are looking for is that Golden paints are highly pigmented. Meaning they have a lot of the actual color pigment added to the binders. You will find Golden is the most highly pigmented and Winsor Newton and Amsterdam and just below Golden in quantity and quality of pigments. Liquitex Proffessional is right up there with them as well. The Liquitex basics are more student grade. Meaning they lose some of their color when thined so you have to be careful to not over thin them. With the viscosity the best way to explain them is heavy body paints, soft body paints, liquid body paints and the least viscous is the Alcohol Inks. If something is said to be very viscous it is very thick like the hard body paints. I'm sorry to explain all that to you on an open forum. Please forgive me. But I would hate to see you go on and never learn the difference. You did an excellent job on your presentation. Happy painting.
Yes I know! I mixed up my words. I thought about taking down the video but so many people have found it helpful anyway. I wrote it in the description but not everyone reads that.
@@beccaharkinsart what if you did a type over on the screen.
My question is all about the bace, do you want your base consistency the same as your paints ? Please and thank you. ❤❤❤❤
Hi Becca, what is a straight poor? I just found you and I thought this video very informative. Thank you so much.
Straight pour is where the paints are layered in a cup and them poured out all at once. Here is an example: ruclips.net/video/boA2_6PlJhc/видео.html Side, note, I am definitely not a straight pour expert! Check out Sarah Mack's channel. She does them really well!
Thank you so much 😊
Is the mixture of Floetrol, paint & water still needed if using water base acrylic paints?
@beccaharkinsart The way you mix you paints is so easy to follow and understand, My question is: Is the paint mixed the same way for the base coat/flow extender etc?
I mix all my paints for a dutch pour with the same recipe and thickness including the base paint
So I saw that Olga has the MHU dryer and tapes a bigger condenser on the end. Maybe an idea 🤷♀️ Thanks for the comparison.
Hi Becca. Question: You mentioned that the Floetrol will go 'bad'. What's in it that will turn it rancid? Or black?
That’s a good question. I’m not sure what goes bad, I just know it can. One time I bought some on discount at Ollie’s and it was rotten. Smelled like rotten eggs. Yuck!
Thank you. I have tried for years and this video will help me improve. I live in Costa Rica and we don’t have Floetrol. Can acrylic white house paint cause the same chemical effects you wisely do? Thank you for your help?
I’m not sure. I have heard it produces cells but the other colors tend to sink into it. You can paint with just acrylic and water OR you can check out Olga’s course. She uses a pouring medium that is accessible in more places. She told me if you take her course and then cannot get the materials she will refund you your money. Might be worth the try! Plus you can save 10% with promo code BECCA
@@beccaharkinsarthello. I really appreciate your reply. Olga’s course . Is from Costa Rica? Have a very good day and take care of your weather.
She is located in Canada but uses supplies that are very accessible all over the globe.
I have Australian Floetrol and for the large bottle it is over $60.00. I would rather have to strain it for $14.00. Do you make your base paints the same way? My husband bought me a little set of Golden and it is as thin as ink, the bottles are tiny and it only takes a few drops to mix up my paint. I was surprised it is that good. I use a lot of Liquitex, Amsterdam and Mica powders. I do love Matisse as well and Atelier. I think you can find some of everything in my art room. Thank you.
Yup! I make my base paint the same.
