Hi guys! Hope you found this helpful! Let me know your thoughts! Here is the web article I was talking about www.justpaint.org/how-much-water-can-you-safely-add-to-acrylic-paint/
Thank you for your excellent video on mixing ratios, it's answered a lot of questions for me and I always enjoy your videos. Could you tell me if it's possible to touch up a dried dutch pour? I ended up with a lot of white patches where I blew out the paint with the hairdryer and it needs more colour - or can I paint over the whole canvas again?
This was so appreciated. I know starting out, my paints were too thick. It took me awhile, along with a scale, practice and tips from you and Rinske to get to a place where my consistency is now appropriate. You are one of the few artists that is willing to help others. You are an inspiration!
I agree Molly is great. I also love cozcreations, she asked me to email my first go at paint pouring to her and she was really supportive. Her art and videos are amazing too.
Do you add silicon. Your paintings are always wonderful.. I have more failures than successes! Do different silicone give different cells? So many questions!
Molly!! Holy guacamole I wish I had seen this video 4 wrecked canvases ago🤣. Finally the penny dropped when you said don’t have your base paint too thick on the canvas or it will swallow your colours. Also that drip test was the final piece of the Dutch pour puzzle that I have been struggling with so much. You are totally amazing. Thank you so much for your attitude, beautiful work and all round lovely person that you are.
Boy I loved your comment and I hope you mean when you ruined 4 canvases that you at least try to scrape them or paint on top of them. I have a 3 paint rule I ditch them after 3 attempts. Oddly enough some of the ones that I paint over turn out to be the best.I think it's lack of pressure ruining a canvas. Anyway I'm glad your light bulbs went off this is so much fun.Molly is awesome!
Kelli Quinn LOL yes if it is wet and not salvageable, I just scrape it and use it again- 3 scrapes is my max. If it is dry and I hate it, I sandpaper it lightly and paint over. You are right tho! Two of my best loved paintings were painted over ‘ruined’ canvases 😁
Oh Molly, you are an absolutely, fantastic teacher! Your passion for your craft is evident. Not to mention your patience, love, and kindness in the expression of the simplest thing. Thank you, thank you, so much for taking the time to go indepth. All my questions were answered without asking any. Wow! You are a gem. Love 😃❤ and blessings to you and family!
Thank you so much for the épurements are showing them correctly. It has been my biggest struggle as there are not many artist that explain and show EXACTLY how to do and how to test it. Very grateful.🙏
The best video ever for giving detailed info on ratios and consistency for Dutch pours that I’ve seen on RUclips. Very valuable Molly and it’s much appreciated 🙏 You crack me up with your buzz line every time...”Hayappy Painting” thanks for watching, .....Byeeeee 😂🤣
This is the best consistency video I've seen yet! Thank you for this. I was so sure my paint was thin enough until I put on my canvas and tried to blow it and blew it 😆 I now know I was bringing my stick up way too high and I'll be looking for the triangle from now on 🙏🏼❤😊
I am a beginner and REALLY want to watch again carefully, but ya know - life.... Thank you in advance, as a newbie to Pour, this is just what I've been searching for. You obviously put in a lot of time and effort. Much Love from Colorado EEUU
I really appreciate you showing and explaining the why to preparing the paints. You are an awesome teacher. I will be referring people to your channel.
You are such an amazing teacher. You explain things and don't make a new person to this art feel like an idiot!! For asking questions. You and Rinska are such inspirations for us "wanna be s" and Olga . Wonderful!!
Wow, Molly. That was great! I have struggled with this for so long. You are a really good teacher! I so appreciate you taking the time to teach this. 💕🥰
Thank you Molly, you and Olga, are the best! We are watching you almost every day with my kids. Appreciate your good mood, how professionally you explain all the staff. Happy painting to you in continues😉👍
Hi Molly, I have watched many RUclips tutorials on fluid art and I just have to say that out of all these, this particular post has been the most informative and helpful to me. Thank you so much!
Oh Em Gee, Molly!!! Where has the drip test been all my life!? That is a lifesaver! You see I don’t have a scale and so I just kind of eyeball the consistency and I’ve started getting better, but I know I’m not where I need to be yet. And I know I made my white too thin once because it broke everything up. This was so extremely helpful, That drip test was worth everything!

Thank for all of your advice - you are an excellent teacher & a brilliant, inventive, clever artist & a wonder with colours. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, with every video you do I learn something each time. I love playing with paint but am a novice artist. Cheers. Michelle 🌺
33:00 I really appreciate you doing this video. This is a way we can make sure our paints are going to do when poured onto the canvas. I did the addition of water by eye thinking I had it right. The next morning when I checked the painting it had numerous cracks. I switched to Amsterdam paint and had no problems with 20 different pours. I think with your lesson I think I can get even better results. Thank you so much!
Certain types of paint does cells all by itself, maybe not silicone level cells but yeah, I like artist loft or Amsterdam for cells, I’m not finished with this video yet so I don’t know what brand she is using. Also sometimes depends on the “pillow” paint Edit: She said she uses Amsterdam, that’s good to know!
Thank you so much, I'm new to this and have wasted so much paint trying to figure out the ratio and which mixing medium to use. I'm feeling confident going forward.
When you're using the scales, you're actually measuring in grams (which equals millilitres of water) which is why the mL are a bit out from the measuring cup. 30mL of water =30g but 30mL of paint doesn't necessarily =30g.
Mmm....yeah...I was puzzling over scales that weigh in millilitres... Cos 50mls of syrup is not the same as 50mls of water when you come to weigh it. Syrup is heavier. Molly, I am brand new to pouring. I have yet to do a single one. This video is amazing. Both intimidating and incredibly informative. Thank you for doing this! And thank you to everyone who commented! You're comments are also incredibly helpful. Hugs to you all! Here goes nothing! :) At the very least, it'll be fun!! :)
Hi, I'm new as well . If you would like to start ,but feel intimidated maybe start with a paint set thats ready to pour. I did my first one with a ready to pour set off of Amazon. I have always wanted to paint with acrylics and let my intimidation get in the way. My best advice is to just do it. So far I've done an abstract , pour, and an actual landscape ( landscape was my most intimidating). Starting is sometimes the hard part ,but you will love it and ots SO therapeutic! I try to paint once a week. Its my stress relief bc while I love my kids being around them 24/7/365 without a break means I needed to do something. And I love it !! And I feel its ok to make some mistakes. My first pour i didn't have a torch and the pour was beautiful. Thought there was a speck of dust so tried to get it out. It was a bubble ans made a whole. So then tried to fix it and made it worse. Wish I hadn't touched it. Someone wanted to buy it actually. However, it was a lesson and I just painted over it with white to use it again and practice more things. You will love it !!best wishes !!!
@@irlhills4570 thank you so much for your post. I will follow your advice to buy ready pour paint. I am really called to try but I have never done it. A bit insecure about the torch … which I won’t use right away… good luck. We are in 2022 and I am sure by now you are a pro.! 🙂
Thankyou Molly I've finally been able to watch this video thank you so.muxh for putting the link for me I really appreciate you taking the time to help me and others total legend in my book 🤗🤗 it's currently 419am so I'll be giving this ago once I've had some sleep 😴 on a funny note that after a small panic cracked me up I was letting some paint skins dry although still very wet and while I was asleep the neighbors cat got into my house and decided to prance across my kitchen bench where of course the paint was drying on my taped off protected area but noooo this cat swanned through the paint leaving a huge trail of it across my bench and up over the window sill to outside ahrrrr I totally freaked out lucky for me it came off fairly easy I live in a rental so would not have gone down well at all however ended up having a bit of a giggle at it thought it might give you knew too and half way through telling you this story relised oh dear this is going to be another novel whoops sorry hope It gave you a bit of a laugh ill let you know how my next peice works out again thank you very much can't wait to give it a go 😀🤗😀
Thank. You. So. Much!!! I have been pouring about 15 months now but have never had much luck with the Dutch. I just stopped trying and started doing the bloom technique. I recently gave the Dutch another try a few weeks ago with not much luck (again). I ran out of Floetrol so I got on RUclips and found you to see how to mix paint and just water. I came across this video and OhMyGosh. I actually did a Dutch that was worth looking at. I still need to practice more but when I followed your measurements, my paints didn’t sink or get swallowed up by the white base. That alone made me giddy. I’m definitely gonna start practicing more and thanks to you I may have finally gotten a handle on the Dutch Pour. You are so awesome gir😊
I'm curious to know if using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of each paint brand (and color within that brand) could be useful for determining how much water/pouring medium is needed to achieve a desired consistency.
I am not sure how much that would help. You might be alright just working with volumes and mass in a graduated cylinder. If you are careful with your graduated cylinder, you should be able to make your own scale conversion for each colour, brand, etc. But if you have a hydrometer and want to try it, I'd say go for it.
Don't bother with the hydrometer - you'll just make a mess and it really won't help. Use a scale, measure in grams. In the end, any volume differences caused by different paint densities will be fixed when you add the water to get the final consistency, and that's all that matters.
@@keith726able Agreed. I decided to abandon that idea after considering it for a bit. Besides, most paint companies have a tech sheet with the SG of their paints on their websites. No need to reinvent the wheel.
@@1jugglethis I'm a chemical engineer - used to measuring everything to the last decimal place. Paint pouring should be fun, not a math exercise. However, consistency is everything, but you can make adjustments at the end. That flow test is the best advice ever - that's all that really matters after you've gotten the thickness close. Even if you mess up the math, the final test is the flow blobs - when they're all the same you're ready to go. I hope you're having fun, making incredibly beautiful artwork.

Thank you very much, 💖Molly💖, for your excellent explanation of how to mix and prepare the colors for the pouring process, and lastly how to test their consistency,
YAY!! Molly, I was paying attention to all your videos. The paint that you put around your creation is to help push the paint.., and I piped up really quick, Without thinking! I talked to myself sometimes...lol So the teacher's done her job teaching me LOl
I've been struggling with the mixing process, and have become so frustrated I almost decided that maybe this just isn't for me. Then, this video came up, and I have renewed faith that I should keep trying to get it right. Thank you for explaining this in such great detail! So appreciate your skills at teaching, and your beautiful art.
OMG THANK YOU!! I tried my first dutch pour yesterday & I knew my paint consistency was wrong but couldn't figure out quite why. Now I know! I've learned so much from this video, much appreciated 🙏💙💜💚
I would never put these colours together, until I saw this, so thank you Molly!! I did a couple for myself and then for others that loved the result, so thank you!!!!
I have been watching videos on this topic for sooo long and most of them just annoy the hell out of me with talking so much nonsense that doesnt mattter and drag it on so much. Plus, they all say something different and act like its the only way! Thank you so much for the enlightenment and a video I could watch all the way through without getting bored and I learned so much! This is just what I needed! Once I become successful at what I do, I will credit you for sure. Thank you. :)
Thank you for this. I thought I was getting my consistency right and couldn't figure out why my paints weren't moving until I watched this video. Very helpful.
I really appreciated this! Of course my Dutch pour last night was too thick. So I wentb& got a scale thanks to ya! Your truly amazing friend! God bless ya & urs!
Thank You Molly. Consistencies are defintely something I struggle with, I suppose I'm afraid of having them so thin, but I need to learn to just leave them alone once mixed. Great video I could watch you all day and your lovely happy demeanour.
Thanks for teaching us how to do this. The math part was perfect and the article was interesting. You are the only one that clearly explains the design and technic without talking garbage or extra attitude. Thanks again
I am documenting on pouring technique for months now. I did not have the courage to pour until I watched this video a few times, prepared as you instructed and.... I DID it! My first pouring today with your precious help! Boy is... lousy :D but I am on the right track now and enjoying the process! Already start to understand what you mean by "feeling it". Thank you, thank you, thank you and be blessed! 🙏💗

You can do both, paint over, or you can take your finger and smudge the color on after it is dry in the places you need

Thank you for this information. I have had a lot of trouble with my Dutch pours. I will definitely try your equations. Thanks again Molly.🤩💞🤩
YAY!! Molly, I was paying attention to all your videos. The paint that you put around your creation is to help push the paint.., and I piped up really quick, Without thinking! I talked to myself sometimes...lol So the teacher's done her job teaching me LOl
Thank you very much for your explanatory video. This is the first time I see such detailed explanation. It was very useful.

Thank you. :)

Thank You Molly. Consistencies are defintely something I struggle with, I suppose I'm afraid of having them so thin, but I need to learn to just leave them alone once mixed. Great video I could watch you all day and your lovely happy demeanour.
It is so tough, one of the hardest things to master! Hope you found this helpful!
Thanks for teaching us how to do this. The math part was perfect and the article was interesting. You are the only one that clearly explains the design and technic without talking garbage or extra attitude. Thanks again

My first pouring today with your precious help! Boy is... lousy :D but I am on the right track now and enjoying the process! Already start to understand what you mean by "feeling it". Thank you, thank you, thank you and be blessed! 🙏💗
