I liked your comparison. I also took Olga’s course. For people starting out you might think taking a course is a bit expensive but for me I didn’t have a clue of what I was doing and wasted a lot of money on supplies. Then after a year or more of still being confused I took her course and learned so much about paint in general. I believe Olga’s work speaks for itself. Thank you for sharing Becca❤
I took Olga's new recipe class and learned so much. I like her new recipe very much. I use my existing paints mixed with US Floetrol, in ring pours. I have not experienced any waste of paint. I enjoyed the comparison and happy you came to the same conclusion I came to. Olgy's recipe is awesome. I highly recommend taken her classes.
Wow, some of these ignorant people! I hope they arent posting on otger artist videos who sre dissecting other rescipes. Its really low standard for mature adults.... Good job Becca and thanks for sharing your valued input!
Such a great comparison video Becca! I signed up for Olga’s course when it was first released and not only does she explain step by step her secret recipes, but it’s just one of the overall all most informative courses I’ve ever taken. 🤗💕
Love your example. I have taken Olga's course as a total beginner. Only started a month ago. It has been a huge learning curve and I scrape about 40% of what I have done as it does not come out nearly like Olga's. I do not get nearly the cells that Olga does and much fewer than Floetrol usage. I used her consistency standard, so not sure where the problem lies. Tried Floetrol a couple times but like you said, the colors were dull and I wasn't as happy with the results. Thank you SO MUCH for posting as it's frustrating for a beginner to know which recipe to use. So many choices out there!
I’m glad you found this helpful! It can definitely be confusing. I say find something you like and stick with it so you can really grow as an artist. If you keep flipping between mediums it is hard to get consistent results.
Olga’s recipe is nice but so is mine. Australian Floetrol is over $60.00 in Australia but it doesn’t have an odour or lumps and it doesn’t dull colours. I only use it in my CA so it goes on forever. I love Olga but my husband is my carer. He had a medical episode a couple of months ago and now has heart damage. We are waiting for our Government to start home assist so we can stay in our home. We only need a couple of hours help a week but our income is now small. The only thing I ever do is stay in my bed, paint or see one of my Doctors. I did love the comparison. Painting keeps me sane and I cannot afford Olga as much as I would love to watch her. Thank you.
Great video! It’s nice seeing the comparison. I wanted to do this, but never got around to it. I’ve taken Olga’s course, and it was really detailed. Probably the most detailed course I’ve ever taken. Definitely worth the money. Unfortunately, after trying to get the recipe to work for me for months, I ended up switching back to floetrol. I felt like I had way more control with my floetrol recipe, and my paintings dried perfectly flat. Now I’m currently trying different recipes and experimenting. There really is no right or wrong, just what you prefer! 🤗
yes, exactly, no right or wrong, just preference! I've adapted Olga's recipe to be thicker than she teaches in her course, because I find that it helps me have more control, like you said! I have even started experimenting with different proportions and brands. I feel like the knowledge has opened up a whole new world of experimentation for me. Nat, your paintings are stunning They stop my scroll every time! Keep up the good work. :-)
@@beccaharkinsartI probably should have done more testing, but it was exhausting for me, and I just ran out of energy. I did try thicker at first, and then went thinner and both didn’t work out. Even got help from Olga directly. I definitely learned a lot through everything, and sometimes things just don’t work out! These last few months I’ve been disconnected with my art, so I appreciate that you say that! Means a lot to me. You’ve had so much success with Olga’s mixture, and I love seeing your results!
I took Olga’s class when I started out and wished I hadn’t. Her recipe was way too thin for me to work with. I ended up spending a lot of time making them thicker. However, in the process of making them thicker and exploring other YT artists, I found my own way. Olga has been adding to her course on a regular basis and I find her follow up modules very useful. Her secret recipe is mostly distilled water with some gel medium. I now use it to thin paint that I have mixed with a 50/50 mix of commercial PM and Floetrol.
Hello from India 🇮🇳. If I had a Daughter, we would happily 😊name her Olga. We highly appreciate her Talent, her Creativity, her Style, her Technique....and.....and her Wonderful Name Also 😂.
As someone who took the Olga Soby course, I greatly appreciate your comparison, Becca. Obviously not everyone appreciates it, but I’ve been wanting to do what you just did myself, and now I don’t have to! 🥳 THANK YOU!!❤
You are so welcome! I figured there would be some people who would be interested to see the results. Honestly a lot more people watched than I expected. Im glad I made the video!
Thank you for doing this video. I was always on the fence of getting the Secret Recipe, but the end results is what did it for me. The vibrancy of the colors and the painting last forever with out yellowing was the final push I needed.
Thanks so much for doing this video. I have taken Olga’s class and took a lot of notes. It’s a complicated but your comparison really shows the great results with Olga’s pouring method. ❤
Thank you so much for showing us the difference. Will definitely be setting aside some funds for taking Olgas course in the near future. You answered a question that I have been pondering.
Thx so much for doing this comparison, I love the way the Olga version looks but was curious if the contents were expensive, it’s good to know they are not that much more! ❤❤
I took Olga course, it was my birthday present from my family. It was amazing and I got so much out of it, not just how to mix paints! So get your family to put their money together for a present you will really enjoy and help you. Hopefully, I'm going to ask for Olga's resin course for Christmas, I don't really want slippers or chocolates, Olga Solby anytime for me!
Not all of us have family (or healthy, wealthy and/or supportive ones) or if they do have those support systems, they do not have ones that are financially well off enough whom care enough for us to be able to ask for such a thing. I'm very happy for you that you had the privilege of taking her course but your ability to do so is just that... An unearned privilege you have that many people unfortunately do not. Enjoy your courses of course but I hope you realize you are far more fortunate than many people in the world as it's just not that simple for most people.
21:20 Becca thank you for this comparison video! Those of us who are serious about producing the best work we can want to know what products are the best . And the comment about the secret recipe, Olga spent her money and 2 years to come up with her recipe. Does people go around asking Col. Sanders for his secret recipe for his chicken? lol
Good point about col sanders! Olga spent so much time and money developing it and has inspired so many people. She deserves to be able to make a career out of it! I’m happy for her success.
I have taken Olga’s class and it really got me on the road to understanding about different acrylic paints. I also have been looking at videos and even Olga’s from a year ago are all using.Floetrol. I wish she would do more videos using her secret recipe. Olga’s class was very informative but the other classes are a lot cheaper and I wish I would’ve taken one of them first. Thank you for the information though.
Thanks for sharing!! I started using her recipe in August and all my paintings since then are with her recipe. I also thought there was a need for more tutorials using her recipe. That’s what I’m here for!
I have taken her class myself using her black Friday sell😊 but I am really loving her new recipe. I could tell an immediate difference between my old Floetrol recipe and her new recipe! Still really enjoyed watching you compare for those who haven't tried her new recipe. Beautiful video I see pros and cons to both recipes!! And will be using both recipes for different things....
Thank you for the comparison. I love the collaboration between so many great pouring artists who are willing to share recipes, make comparisons, demonstrate and instruct on technique - both paid and free. The free videos here enable those of us who are new to this type of art to learn a little and then sign up for courses with the artists we feel drawn to do a deeper dive with. I really enjoyed your video and quickly hit the subscribe button so I can follow you for more. Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video. It randomly popped up. I appreciate you respected Olga and not sharing her recipe. The results using Olga’s mix looks incredible over flowtrol!!!! Thank you for this video!!!!!
Becca, that is what I was hoping to find newbie , Being in CAD, Floetrol like 55$ a gallon and liquitex médium also very expensive ! I would definately take thé course if I knew thé cost is not so high ! Her recipe gives colors much more contrast. Thank you so MUCH for making this vidéo Blessings 🙏
@@beccaharkinsart Yes ,that is always in US affordable ,but converted in CAD is at least 40 % + 15 % tax ... lol . I still have doubts 😂 but love this Art so much! Thanks ya!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I really liked it. I'm a beginner and it really helped me. I'm from Brazil and I bought fluetrol last week because here in Brazil there's nothing that I have tried it worked to bring to it the cells, so I bought it. On the other hand I bought Soby's course yesterday because I really want to learn with her. And indeed fluetrol it too expensive.
Thanks Becca for this comparison. It was really informative and helpful. I have taken Olga’s recipe course and am nearly finished it and now seeing your comparison I can’t wait to get started with trying Olga’s recipes for myself. Thank you again coz it’s definitely given me some extra oomph to get out there and give it a go 😊
Thanks for the comparison. In this case I actually like the floetrol version better (both are beautiful it’s just a matter of preference)…..it is calmer and for me just looks more like natural flowers. With that said I absolutely love the art Olga does…..and yours as well. 👍🏻
Great video!! Thank you so much for making this video. It is very helpful to me. I'm a beginner and need to learn a lot more to get the kind of results I see in others' paintings. 😏 The comparison you did provided really good information. Thanks!
Hey Bec, I just wanted to say thank you in your videos and this one. I do feel though, you spent much more care and work with Olgas secret recipe than the floetrol (Im an Aussie, and our Floetrol must be better than the US one). Other than that, I love your channel and thank and appreciate you ❤
I’m just looking for something other than Floetrol. I’ve not been satisfied with my pours using glue/water or Hobby Lobby’s brand of pouring medium. Thank you for this video.
Yes! In the course Olga says that she prefers the paints to be very thin but she know that some artist like to work with thicker paints and that the recipe can be adjusted. I crest the PM the same, just add less of it to the paints to make them thicker.
I agree and the first time I used it exactly to her recipe, my painting actually cracked. Once I thickened it up with one of the ingredients, it created much better results.
Just want to say I thought the same I even added more gloss gel to make it thicker but you know what?! It wasn't nessasary her mix is fabulous. Go with it & see !!
Thank you - I did get value from your time! What did you think of the pewter? I prefer the effects of the Soby recipe, though I really liked the rose composition of your first pour. I've taken Olga's course and am chomping at the bit to mix my medium. My husband and I need to finish rearranging our home; and this pertains to your video because of cost of mediums. Keeping in mind that a gallon is nearly four liters: Due to spatial constraints, I have a tiny place to mix and a second tiny space across the room to pour. When straining Floetrol on Saturday, I spilled almost a whole quart (strained into a smaller container to make it easier to hold). Can you imagine spilling a quart of Olga's medium (either group) on a concrete floor?? I'm now out nearly $5.50 USD for the cost to replace the gallon jug, plus sales tax, plus the time to pick up the in-stock item at the Home Depot in stock two miles from my home (AND time I'll lose browsing 🤣). Compare that to the cost of a quart of Olga's ingredients (which would take me 2-3 hours to earn) which I would receive in a minimum of three days, IF it's in stock at my local art shop. (I had to wait three weeks after taking the course to buy the bottles that now taunt me, waiting to be mixed...) BUT for now, I'm not blowing out my pours. For the time being, I'm doing straight pours, swipes, flip cups, etc., and while I know that the Soby recipe will be superior to Floetrol + commercial pouring medium and silicone, it's better than not pouring at all.
I LOVED the pewter! I'm using it with different colors today and it is just blowing my mind. Silver never did it for me, but the pewter is the perfect mix between gold and silver in my opinion. I'm so sorry to hear about the lost Floetrol! Ugh, what a heart break! I fell victim to the time Olly's was selling Floetrol for pennies on the dollar. I bought 3 gallons and brought them home only to realize that they had gone rotten and smelled like rotten eggs. Use whatever pouring medium makes you happy with your work! Just keep painting!
This is the first video of yours that I've watched. Thanks for doing that - very useful (Except I just mixed up TWO gallons of Molly's Artistry mix along with enough paint to last a while, so we'll see)!! You did an excellent job of explaining what you were doing and I think giving an excellent demonstration. And you make the use of a blow dryer look so easy! I always think I'm an artist until I get the blow dryer out!! Then I'm put in my place! Great job!
Thought the comparison was great, having taken Olga’s course I too thought the paints were very very thin so it was good to see someone else did too! Being in Australia I’m always curious of American floetrol, Australian floetrol might be great for blooms but for me, it destroys Dutch pours! I’m always looking and testing, am really enjoying your videos - you have a real knack for it 😊
Glad it was helpful! Olga is always adding on to the course. I believe she is going to add a module that teaches how to mix a standard for thicker paints.
Oh I hope so…as a newbie I am finding it difficult to control paint that thin so I have been using her recipes but mixing my paints slightly less runny.
I use Australian floetrol which has no odour and no lumps in it. I get beautiful bright colours. I notice that you did add more paint to olgas recipe then when you used the floetrol. The australian floetrol makes beautiful cells, which you can control. I am lucky to be living in Australia where floetrol is easy to get. Regards Glenis.
Yes, she added more paint and worked on finessing the final outcome, lots of blowing, cleaned up a section, much more time and paint on the second one…To me, that wasn’t a fair comparison…
I understand what you’re saying. It’s one thing to compare between two readily available pouring mediums, it’s another thing altogether to compare a “secret” recipe with standard practice.
When using floetrol if you want it to be archival you can always put resin over the painting which also will make the paint colors pop but thank you so much for the comparison
Thank you, that was so informative. I do prefer the results with Olga’s recipe and coming from the UK, where Flotrol is sooo expensive, it’s a no brainier which I will be using. 👏🏻👩🎨🎨
Hi Becca. Thank you for your work and the videos. May I ask you some advice please? (I’m French, sorry for my English). I am a beginner in painting, and in pour painting. I love what you do, what Olga Solby do and what Molly artistery do and Rinske Douna too. I want to do the courses, but with Molly and Olga new arts lessons, I don’t know which one is better for me. Do you think that it is better to start with the « A to Z courses » or with Olga new arts lessons? Or with Molly’s new art courses? Knowing that I am a beginner and that I love Rinske Douna flowers and Molly’s composition when she is using haut dryer better than knife swipes. Do things you learn in « from A to z »courses change, since they develop other courses?
Great questions! I have never taken the a to z course so I don’t know exactly what is in it, but I think they teach the hair dryer method using only paint and water. If you like what Molly and Rinske create with paint and water I would recommend starting with the a to z course because it will teach you the foundations you need for all the techniques.
I have taken the A to Z course and Olgas secret recipe course as well. I think it's best to start with the A to Z course. I like that you get 3 for 1 with Olga, Molly and Rinske teaching the class. You'll learn a variety of pouring mixes and why as well as a great variety of techniques. It can be overwhelming so just remember, you can watch each sections as many times as you need/want. I learned a lot and then started experimenting with first water mixed with paint, then Floetrol and lastly Olga's recipes. If you're just starting out - water and paint is good. Most important (and hardest - I'm still learning) is paint consistency and how much paint for the base. Also, I have the same blowdryer and am still learning how to use forced air as a "brush" - so that takes practice as well. You'll overwork a lot of your paintings which is good, it allows for experimentation with finger swipes, tilting, etc. I've also used silicone drops to get an explosion of cells and had a lot of fun with that. I found that once I finish with 2-3 coats of gloss varnish, the colors from all pouring mediums pop. I'm using American Floetrol from Home Depot and purchased the filter that attaches to strain the medium off Amazon. I had quite a bit of Artist Loft 1 paints so practice with those (since they're cheap and I already had a lot) before working with the more expensive brands. Olga does teach how you can mix cheaper paints with more expensive paints in her secret recipe course too.
If those of us who don't have RUclips channels had any idea of the work involved making a video, we wouldn't complain about a charge for a class. Add to that, the cost of all the paints, mediums and canvases. Many RUclips channels offer a Patreon subscription. It's up to each individual to decide if they want to pay for the channel. Besides, I thought this was supposed to be a place where negativity has no place. Suggestions, yes. Criticism, no. HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all American viewers!
I'm like 8 months deep into this particular technique and my dyslexia is challenged to the core but u make so much sense. I'm so trying to practice this and maybe u got the angle I'm missing on the red opaque, green transparent, add opaque in the middle of that's right?! But I belive this is an under lining undertone of mud events im experiencing But I'm still lacking techniquemaybe I need to practice not blowing more than one fatal swoop And I wonder sometimes if it's my blowdryer beak
I think it depends on your composition and the effects you're trying to achieve. Either one of these products is going to do. Its job Olga has put a lot of time and effort into creating the medium to achieve what she needs and what she desires. I say hats off to Olga for coming up with her secret recipe and she should be absolutely ecstatic. I would never create a video to put out. That is actually comparing which product is best.Because either one of them is a very good idea.It depends on the individual and your composition
ThankU heaps for the comparison HOWEVER can U pls do a couple more comparisons of other techniques & not just the one dutch pours painting. Ive never liked dutch pours, but like swiping & blooms & open cups & many ppl love ring pours etc, & for anyone to pay for a course & pay for totally diffeent ingredients & learn how to use it is no small thing, so most of us need to know theres more reaon than that one small comparison with one painting in one technique. THANKS!!!
I have done some videos with other techniques. I don’t think this recipe will work for a bloom but it does work for a swipe and it also works for a reverse flower dip. I have a whole series on that!
I'm going with Olga, all the way. The colors are much more vibrant. I think the course is well worth the money, especially for me. I'm a brand noobie so I haven't formed any habits or methods that I have to change. And BTW if it makes it easier on your budget, you can pay in 3 monthly payments instead of all at once. That made it an easy decision for my fixed income. Yes, I'm biased, but with justification. Its just that much better.
This was a really cool video! Thank you for the comparison. I think you did a great job being impartial too! Without divulging any ingredients, would you be able to estimate the cost of the Soby mix? For say a gallon of her pouring medium vs a gallon of floetrol. Both in USA?
You’re very welcome! I’ve been trying to figure out how to calculate this. I would say overall I think Olga’s recipes come out to be about 25-30% more expensive than floetrol, but that is mainly because the way I mix them, thicker, I end up using more paint than I do when I mix them with floetrol. If you mix them really thin like she does, it is probably about the same or maybe a little more.
@beccaharkinsart thank you for the info! I remember when she used to only use water! I thought JEEZ I would go through 4 tubes of paint per painting if I only use water!🤣
I don’t think it is due to the thinness. I mix my paints thicker and still get cells. It is due to the densities of the paints in relationship to each other.
Straight pour, yes! Flip cup, yes! pearl pour, kind of. It would be dependent on using the two different mixtures in a certain way. Would you like to see an example?
Liebes, vielleicht habe ich etwas falsch verstanden, auf jeden Fall war das Ganze sehr informativ, vielen Dank. Ich freue mich auf deine neuen Bilder!🧡💛💚
you are not kidding. I watched the course twice, it's a little confusing, trying to figure out when to use #1 as a base, and when to use #2 as a base.. AND, when to blow over #1 vs. blow over #2. I am confused! @@beccaharkinsart
good video, I need help! I'm from Uruguay and floetrol doesn't exist here! I make my medium with vinyl glue, but how could I improve the quality of my paintings if floetrol does not exist here?
Honestly there is not much difference between ANY medium to another except using glue. Glue is yuck, it stinks and gets worse in the bottle the longer you have it. I use paint, GAC 800 by Golden, and a mix of water/floetrol floetrol ISNT necessary. Rinske Downa just uses water and paint and it hasn’t affected her at all. Floetrol mattifies the look of the dried paint even more. With amazing teachers out there in the YT world like Tammy Anderson, Kanella Ciracco and Lisa from Harmony House there’s No need to pay money to learn paint pouring. I’ve been doing this for 4 years, all aspects of it, it’s trial and error, experimenting with things and understanding that a medium is a binder for the acrylic paint to adhere to and a thinner. That’s it! Practice increases your performance and you become more and more experienced in your techniques. If you WANT to pay for a class then good on you, if you don’t or can’t then there are PLENTY of other people to learn off of. Take notes when you pour, layer in different ways and note the out come. Tammy Anderson has a free downloadable paint consistency chart to test your paints on. It’s PERFECT!!! Gina Delucca is another fab teacher and has free tools to use as well. It’s art, it’s in the eye of the beholder, it’s meant to be enjoyed both by viewing and creating. It’s not a competition, let it bring you peace and happiness not stress and frustration. Tammy covers the basics of paint pouring in all forms and she has MANY videos on medium mixes. She’s HANDS Down the best teacher. Kanella is the queen of measurements. If you want measurements on a scale over 2:1 parts then visit her channel. Seek and ye shall find!!! lol
The manufacturer of UK Owatrol claims that it is the same product as American Floetrol and more importantly they do NOT yellow over time. So Floetrol is archival even.
As someone who took Olga's course and have watched Becca's video (I have watched Olga's course multiple times because I'm always forgetting something), I'm trying to figure out where this Australian Floetrol is coming from. If you are assuming that the secret recipe includes Australian Floetrol and you haven't taken the course, you are doing a disservice to yourself and others who might be interested in taking the course. It would be awesome if we could get all the info and tutorials for free but in the real world, I'm sure they would like to get some financial compensation for their work.
Çannot believe some of thé disrespectful comments below I have been on RUclips almost 5 years watching learning tons of tutoriels in Arts and piano lessons and have noticed how many viewers are being so ungrateful People think everything should be free out there ! WE are so heavenly Lucky that these Artists take time to make Free vidéos,,, if they make courses why should it be free ??? while it has cost them years of expérience and $$ to make these courses. Come on People ! LIFE aint Just a FREE ride !
Becca i am still stuggling. I pour my white base down and as soon as i add a color the color spreads and fades into white. I even did the drip test and it still didn't work. Sometimes it ends up like soup. I won't paint until i find out what i am doing wrong. What's the point? i would be just wasting my paint.
I will say, once you sign up, you instantly become an affiliate so every time someone signs up, using your code, you get 10%. Out only takes a few people signing up to get all your money back. That at least helped me justify spending the money. ❤
Which Floetrol is it? australian or US , they are totally different, one is oil based, makes cells, US is for latex paint, no cells, needs silicone oil. They are not a pouring medium.
Se me acaba de encender la bombilla! 😅...
Fluid painting or pouring; it’s all about fun and discovering what the paint does. It’s not Bloody Mary Berry! You can use water and get fabulous results just as easily. Stop procrastinating and being precious and just enjoy the process of making a mess with your torches, glue guns and costly tools. Life is short to be overly concerned about how a paint behaves!! 🤣😀
~*~Why didn't you put a cell activator in the floetrol? You used Olga's 2 different recipes, obviously the two are used for that reason. I love Olga. She's fantastic. All her recipes are based on her years of experience. I just don't believe this to be an accurate comparison. Most floetrol users that prefer cells would use a cell activator. It's a science thing. Thank you, however. I love negative space too!~*~
With all respect to your art Becca, I don’t understand why you would make such a comparison when Olga Sobys secret mix is indeed that, secret…..if the secret can’t be shared with those less fortunate of us who cannot afford her course then it sort of makes me feel my work is somehow inadequate, because my results are not the best they could be. No more please! 🙏🏻
I'm sorry this video made you feel like your work in somehow inadequate! That was not my intention at all. I get a lot of questions about if the new pouring medium is worth it, so I thought it would be helpful to create a video to compare and contrast the pros and cons. Did you know the famous artist Basquiats created his paintings on FedEx boxes? It is not so much about what the painting is on or what it is made of that makes it adequate, but that YOU created it, that it comes from a place inside you, and that it brings you joy and resonates feelings and emotions to anyone who has the opportunity to experience your art. I hope that you will continue to create for creation sake no matter what pouring medium you use!
Not to mention the THOUSANDS of us who have SUPPORTED Olgas EVERY SINGLE VIDEO over the YEARS & have made Olga's channel as popular as it is now, are now being told kinda ... pay me $$$$ if you want to support me, or I don't need your support anymore unless its in CASH. Just very distasteful & greedy. I would a NEVER in a million years thought Olga would stoop to the level that other greedy people have. It's one thing to charge from the beginning, but to wait till thousands of people have shown nothing but love & support is just a huge turn off. If half of you even knew the amount of $$$ RUclips Artists this popular make MONTHLY just from their regular videos you would faint. I have a best friend who is a popular RUclips artist & trust me, I know the THOUSANDS of $$$ these popular RUclips artists make.... but some apparently want even MORE MORE MORE... when Olga was doing SAM she was the BEST absolutely sweetheart making money & griwing her channel like crazy, maybe not as fast, but definitely one of the highest subbed channels out there. That's the Olga I miss.
Hello there.I was about to subscribe, but I find it distracting when music is playing. In my older years I just need to follow one thing or another.!!! Greetings from England.x P’S. I’m going to subscribe anyway as I still like a channel,bu not very often!!
Floetrol is app $20 per gallon and readily available on Amazon and some Home Depot stores. Olga's course, however, is a minimum of $179 on SALE. She's an incredible Fluid Artist ,but this comparison feels a lil bit disingenuous when you imply Olga's recipe is more accessible/less costly. I admire her work and yours, but I'm not about to pay close to $200 for a Paint Pour Recipe; I already do Fluid Art & was interested to see this comparison strictly re: the recipe. Thank You so much for your work/time to create the comparison for us~ Best Regards~
I understand your perspective. When I say it is more accessible I mean in other countries. I’ve heard floetrol can be upwards of $60/gal in Canada and is not even available in most other countries. Olga’s course isn’t for everyone. I created this video to help people decide if it is right for them.
Your first drip test was not accurate. As you were testing on absorbant cardboard and took some time between the drops like getting pink stir stick. You could see how the first puddles spread.
You missed telling people that if you use Soby method EVERY paint you use in your painting has to be mixed ONLY with her pouring medium or you will end up with horrible cracking. So if you have paints that you have mixed with flortrol previously you will need to throw away or you will have a cracked mess, I did it! Soby course was a Big waste of my money 💰
Part of the agreement when you sign up for Olga's course is that you can't share the recipe outside the course. This is not an uncommon practice. It costs a small fortune to develop a recipe. Example: For a long time, the bloom recipe was ONLY available to people who took the course, and could not be shared on social media. If I want results like Olga's, I'm using her recipe.
@rebekahsue you got it right. She spent years and thousands of dollars creating the receipe. IMO if she wants to monetize that instead of give that information away for free, she has every right to do so.
Frankly,@@beccaharkinsart, I think you do a great job sharing your gained knowledge without crossing over to noncompliance. I absolutely know that I can't do it without slipping up. I talk too much.
While the “secrete recipe” is touted as the the key take-away from her course, you will also learn the science of paint and why the “recipe” works. Yes, it is expensive and if you are on a budget and/or just starting out, stay with Floetrol or other less expensive mediums. I wish Rebekah would have also pointed out the difference in the finish using Olga’s recipe. This is a huge difference if you want an “archival” or long lasting work of art as well as colors that have a brighter finish coat than with Floetrol. I think her course is excellent and she has clearly invested a lot of time and money experimenting and deserves to be compensated for doing the type of research few of us want to do. It’s like the difference in using craft paint versus professional grade paints. There really is a difference and the choice is always yours to make. Whatever you choose, don’t fall into the trap of viewing making art as a competitive sport. That will just suck all the joy out of your creativity.
Not sure who you think I’m bashing. I’ve gotten a lot of questions about Olga’s Recipe so I made this video to try to help others who have questions about her course. I’m glad there are so many who find it helpful!
That’s a good point!
Thanks for your encouragement!
I'm not sure why you have to be sooo mean and rude.
Such a great comparison video Becca! I signed up for Olga’s course when it was first released and not only does she explain step by step her secret recipes, but it’s just one of the overall all most informative courses I’ve ever taken. 🤗💕
It's so good! I was super impressed. Olga is a class act!
Thank you.
@@karenstrong8887 thank you Karen. I also love Olga.
Thanks for taking the time to record this comparison, Becca. Olga's course is excellent!
It really is! And you’re welcome!
You speak for you and I both. I've taken the course but have went back to what works best for me as well... fluetrol. It's just less hassle for sure
THANK YOU!!❤
You are so welcome! I figured there would be some people who would be interested to see the results. Honestly a lot more people watched than I expected. Im glad I made the video!
Thank you for all of us that can't afford $150 for the course I thought isn't there somebody that's going to tell? ❤❤❤
Thank you for doing this video. I was always on the fence of getting the Secret Recipe, but the end results is what did it for me. The vibrancy of the colors and the painting last forever with out yellowing was the final push I needed.
I have found so many ways to use the recipe! You won’t be disappointed!
Great comparison, think I prefer the floetrol as I am not a real fan of the cells and prefer less cells if get some
Thanks so much for doing this video. I have taken Olga’s class and took a lot of notes. It’s a complicated but your comparison really shows the great results with Olga’s pouring method. ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for showing us the difference. Will definitely be setting aside some funds for taking Olgas course in the near future. You answered a question that I have been pondering.
I'm curious. What is the question you have been pondering?
I took Olgas course and am really pleased with the results. But there is definitely a learning curve, as I had to relearn after 4 years of pouring.
I agree about the learning curve. It’s like a reset. But once I got it it really opened up a world of inspiration and ideas for me.
Thx so much for doing this comparison, I love the way the Olga version looks but was curious if the contents were expensive, it’s good to know they are not that much more! ❤❤
You are so welcome!
Haha!! What a great idea! I’m with you! Just yesterday I was thinking about asking for a new painting apron.
I wish she would do more as well.
Thank you very much for taking Time to answer. Thank you for your advices. Have a good day. Thank you for your paintings and your smile!
Thank you! You too!
Just beautiful and thanks for your helpfull instructions as to mixing, opacity and brands. 😊
Thank you for this video. I am going to take her course when time lets me. The vibrant difference sold me.
Wonderful!
Thank you very much for the comparison of Olga's recipe and American Floetral having an odor since I am sensitive to odors. ❤
You are so welcome!
I have taken her class myself using her black Friday sell😊 but I am really loving her new recipe. I could tell an immediate difference between my old Floetrol recipe and her new recipe! Still really enjoyed watching you compare for those who haven't tried her new recipe. Beautiful video
I see pros and cons to both recipes!! And will be using both recipes for different things....
Glad you like it!
Thank you for the comparison. I love the collaboration between so many great pouring artists who are willing to share recipes, make comparisons, demonstrate and instruct on technique - both paid and free. Our pleasure! That’s what I’m here for.
The cost of the material is about the same as using US floetrol in the US! I was concerned about the cost too but I was pleasantly surprised!
I hope you like Olga’s course as much as I did!
@@beccaharkinsart for sure I will. Thank you
Thanks Becca for this comparison. It was really informative and helpful. I have taken Olga’s recipe course and am nearly finished it and now seeing your comparison I can’t wait to get started with trying Olga’s recipes for myself. Thank you again coz it’s definitely given me some extra oomph to get out there and give it a go 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the comparison. In this case I actually like the floetrol version better (both are beautiful it’s just a matter of preference)…..it is calmer and for me just looks more like natural flowers. With that said I absolutely love the art Olga does…..and yours as well. 👍🏻
Yes! Two different looks.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge & comparison between the two..I purchased Olga's course but have yet tried her recipe...
We appreciate you!!!❤
Very kind. Thank you!
Thank you for this demo. I have purchased Olga's course but haven't gotten past chpt.4 so far. I have a long ways to go.
You are so welcome!
Great video!!
Thank you so much for making this video. It is very helpful to me. I'm a beginner and need to learn a lot more to get the kind of results I see in others' paintings. 😏 The comparison you did provided really good information. Thanks!
I’m so glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for the information, not sure I can afford the course and all the ingredients!
No worries! Paint pouring is an expensive hobby. I totally get it!
Becomes an elite hobby
Thank you for this because I bought her course but don't want to use it since it is so thin.
You're so welcome!
Hey Bec, I just wanted to say thank you in your videos and this one. I do feel though, you spent much more care and work with Olgas secret recipe than the floetrol (Im an Aussie, and our Floetrol must be better than the US one). Other than that, I love your channel and thank and appreciate you ❤
Aussie floetrol is definitely different than US floetrol. And you’re welcome!
🌹 OLGA = 💯 SUCCESS
Thank you for sharing this with us ♥️
Absolutely!!
I’m just looking for something other than Floetrol. I’ve not been satisfied with my pours using glue/water or Hobby Lobby’s brand of pouring medium. Thank you for this video.
I tried several different pouring mediums but didn’t find anything I liked to replace floetrol until I found Olga’s recipe.
I bought her course but the medium is so thin I didn't want to use it but Iwill try again so thank you for the video.
I found that it is too thin also so I choose to mix mine thicker.
It is good to know I am not the only one.
(I had to wait three weeks after taking the course to buy the bottles that now taunt me, waiting to be mixed...)
BUT for now, I'm not blowing out my pours.
You are SOOO talented!!!
I really appreciated this video. I hope to take Olga's course some day and this video helps to see what is possible ❤
I hope so too!
Great job!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Becca. I will have to check with Olga if it's available in New Zealand. 😊
Please let me know if it is or not.
One liter is $60 here!! I would have to quadruple my prices! Lol
Yes, she added more paint and worked on finessing the final outcome, lots of blowing, cleaned up a section, much more time and paint on the second one…To me, that wasn’t a fair comparison…
Thank you. I will look up Olga’s course.
Check the description for a link.
I understand what you’re saying. It’s one thing to compare between two readily available pouring mediums, it’s another thing altogether to compare a “secret” recipe with standard practice.
The intention is to help people decide if the course is right for them.
When using floetrol if you want it to be archival you can always put resin over the painting which also will make the paint colors pop but thank you so much for the comparison
Does that make it archival?
Thank you for the test ❤❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊
Thank you, that was so informative. I do prefer the results with Olga’s recipe and coming from the UK, where Flotrol is sooo expensive, it’s a no brainier which I will be using. 👏🏻👩🎨🎨
Yes, I have heard it is very expensive in the UK!
@@beccaharkinsart yes it is, I’m playing around with some different paint conditioners that are easier to purchase here. You never know…😂👩🎨
Hi! I don"t live in UK, but in Europe. Been using Owatrol, but as you say very expensive. You think olga recipe more cost effective?
Well said!
U can lacer your paitings and put a uv coats over your pairing or even better and u can use resin wich it's amazing
I’m not a huge resin fan but the glass like finish on wood is nice.
Try blowing just once and see if that helps. Too many makes the paints mix.
Yes both work. I compare side by side so people can decide for themselves which look they like better.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤❤. The colors are stunning.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the comparison. ❤
I thank you for the comparison, I have taken Olga's class, and I do find her recipe to be better.
You are so welcome!
Both are beautiful
Congratulations on the explanation! We don't have this product in Brazil, what would be the alternative? Brazil - São Paulo here
Check out Olga’s recipe. You might be able to get your hands on her pouring medium ingredients.
Дуже красиві абстракції! 👌👌👌 Дякую за відео ❤❤❤
That’s good to know about the installment option!
Definitely like the floetrol better!
Great video! Thank you 😊
You are so welcome!
Do you think Olga gets more cells due to the thinness of her medium?
I don’t think it is due to the thinness. I mix my paints thicker and still get cells. It is due to the densities of the paints in relationship to each other.
Great video thank you!❤
You are so welcome!
What about other techniques, say a straight pour or a pearl pour. Could you use her PM?
Straight pour, yes! Flip cup, yes! pearl pour, kind of. It would be dependent on using the two different mixtures in a certain way. Would you like to see an example?
@@beccaharkinsart i would LOVE to see an example!
Liebes, vielleicht habe ich etwas falsch verstanden, auf jeden Fall war das Ganze sehr informativ, vielen Dank. Ich freue mich auf deine neuen Bilder!🧡💛💚
You’re welcome!
@beccaharkinsart Eye-opening comparison, thank you! Do you now use Olga’s recipe/system for all your techniques, or just for your Dutch pours?
I’ve been experimenting to see which other techniques work. Lately I’ve been on a reverse flower dip kick. Have you seen any of those videos?
@@beccaharkinsart not yet, but after I type this response I’m heading straight to your collection to check them out. Your work is so beautiful!

Olag knows her stuff!
You should be allowing us to stare at the art, not you. But the Solby has it.😂❤ Olga is very good at her art.
She is!
I took Olga’s course, but I haven’t figured out which paint to use #1 in verses #2. What is the different reaction between the two?
I think that is the trickiest part. She gives some guidelines but ultimately I think yo need to learn by experimenting.
you are not kidding.
Do you have access to Liquitex products in Uruguay?
Seek and ye shall find!!! lol
Agreed! There are many great teachers out there!
👏 👏 👏
Plus, Tammy is hilarious!
The manufacturer of UK Owatrol claims that it is the same product as American Floetrol and more importantly they do NOT yellow over time. So Floetrol is archival even.
I’m not sure about this as I haven’t researched Owatrol. But I suspect that it doesn’t have the same archival qualities as artist paint products do.
Do you mix Olga’s recipe a little thicker than she does?
Yes I do!
Obrigado pelo vídeo muita gratidão
As someone who took Olga's course and have watched Becca's video (I have watched Olga's course multiple times because I'm always forgetting something), I'm trying to figure out where this Australian Floetrol is coming from. If you are assuming that the secret recipe includes Australian Floetrol and you haven't taken the course, you are doing a disservice to yourself and others who might be interested in taking the course. It would be awesome if we could get all the info and tutorials for free but in the real world, I'm sure they would like to get some financial compensation for their work.
I’m not sure what you are referring to. I don’t use Australian floetrol in these paintings.
Make your own mix folks- experiment- it may be fun!!
Thanks! I agree with you!
What brand of paint are you using for your base?
Arteza Titan. White. Did you ever find the elephant i saw in one of your paintings?@@beccaharkinsart
And i use glue in my paints maybe i should have stuck to just paint and water too late now.
@@juliegilmore7899 try Liquitex or Amsterdam Titanium white for your base. I believe the paint is denser and will hold the other paints up.
Wish I could afford the class.
I will say, once you sign up, you instantly become an affiliate so every time someone signs up, using your code, you get 10%. Out only takes a few people signing up to get all your money back. That at least helped me justify spending the money. ❤
good point!!
Which Floetrol is it? australian or US , they are totally different, one is oil based, makes cells, US is for latex paint, no cells, needs silicone oil. They are not a pouring medium.
I compared to US floetrol.

I love negative space too!~*~
For a bloom, yes, there would be additional cell activator. In my experience most artists done use a cell activator for a Dutch pour.
What about taking responsibility for your feelings instead of blaming?
@@jro9365I felt the same. I dont watch her videos anymore. There are so many great artists out there.
Forget American Floetrol use Australian Floetrol instead. I think it is far superior in many ways and cells galore.
Hello there.I was about to subscribe, but I find it distracting when music is playing. In my older years I just need to follow one thing or another.!!! Greetings from England.x P’S. I’m going to subscribe anyway as I still like a channel,bu not very often!!
Sorry about that. Most people enjoy the music.
Thanks for your observation
I think she knows what she’s doing
@@CathySurgeon oh, I do too.
Liebe Beca, das ist kein Kupfer, das ist Bronze.
Did I say copper? I’m sorry, the color is actually Pewter. I can see how that might sound like copper.
Personally I thought Olga’s recipe was a game changer for me. If you weren’t satisfied I suggest you reach out to her. She’s pretty responsible.
I don’t understand all of this “secret” recipe stuff. I guess some people are on some kind of power trip.
You all made very good points. I have a lot to consider.
It seems your bashing a fellow artist it makes me sad that you would do that.
Not sure who you think I’m bashing. I’ve gotten a lot of questions about Olga’s Recipe so I made this video to try to help others who have questions about her course. I’m glad there are so many who find it helpful!
