She's talking about the celebrity of the artist and the dollar value of the painting. But maybe a buyer likes it because it reminds him of the country where he grew up. Maybe it brings a sense of peace, of calm. Also, it may be more attractive when cleaned. At thrift shop prices, if it makes your heart feel good, buy it. Remember, things you buy and then regret can always go back to the thrift store. Things you wanted but passed up will keep you up at night, regretting.

Or buy & repurpose the painting like others do. One guy adds his own touches to it, Afterall, he is now the owner. In one boats on an ocean landscape he added a kraken & lifted the whole thing from mundane.

Often the paintings in thrift stores are amateur or “outsider” paintings. They can be fun and delightful, creative and funny, and break all the rules. I buy them if they make me happy. I am a trained artist myself, but what is commercially popular or valuable is not what makes the heart sing.

this is a well-balanced composition. the background fence follows the same shape as the sheep in the foreground (upside down V) also the left side works well also.

That's GREAT that, at that time, landscapes aren't/weren't popular. That is always a perfect time to buy what you'd want AND at lower prices. Things/tastes ALWAYS change, anyhow. What a great video.

If I like it, it’s a good painting. It’s what I personally will enjoy in my home! I agree with what you say about compositions. I love landscapes just the same and I love paintings like the girl with the red hair. Many people love the art I pick and if they say they don’t like it, it’s their loss. They don’t have to look at it! I love looking at my art. Whether it’s a a rooster called His Majesty by a lady in Vancouver or Victorian picnics by an English artist, I enjoy each and every one of them!

4:00 Thrift Store Paintings are mainly copies of famous artists. So they have composition but not detail. So basically, the first thing to check is whether this is a copy.

Critiquing a thrift store painting as if it were displayed in a museum seems bizarre and rather pointless. I have browsed thrift stores for decades looking for paintings. It almost never happens that I find a painting worth buying for its own sake as art. Mostly the frames are better than the paintings. When I do buy a thrift store painting the typical plan is to either discard or paint over the painting, and most likely use the frame for a better artwork. In some cases I can improve the resale value of the painting by "fixing it up", that is, repaint some areas to improve its artistic quality and eye appeal.
Oh, and don't worry. I'm not finding paintings by George Inness or any artist of this quality when I dare to retouch a painting. For the most part, paintings that end up in thrift stores are there for a reason.

The value of a painting is what you can sell it for and unfortunately the name of an artist is everything. So for me I just luck for art I want to hand in my home myself.

Once I asked a persian carpet dealer. How does one choose? He said1) do you like it? 2) Can you afford it? 3) Do you have a space to display it? I would add: is it good quality? Let the rest of other people's opinions (opo's) go
