The engineer who designed this probably gets commission every time a headlight bulb is changed. 😂 GREAT VIDEO straight and to the point. 👍
ive never had to go through this much work for a damn bulb on any other vehicle. absolutely ridiculous. thank you for the video. was told 150 to swap the bulb because of the work... understand why now... but this is easy enough for anyone to do. not as simple as just poping the hood and replacing... but def doesnt seem that bad, just time consuming.
Agreed brother.
On my 2010 Mazda 6 I have to either fight demons and self harm or take both front wheels off to change headlight bulbs
I'll never buy another Chevrolet because of this ridulousiness. The engineer should be fired. Sold our 2010 Malibu at 130,000. Bought a 2021 Camry.
I know , to change the third brake light is a nightmare also got to take a lot stuff to change that light
Somebody should go to GM and kick there ass for such a nice design. Shouldn't take more than 5 min to change any bulb on a car.
Yeah... I totally agree! Such a stupid design!
no kidding!!! i have a nissan pathfinder. all i had to do for mine is open the hood and stick my hand behind the kit. this is ridiculous!!
Crack.
I'll NEVER buy another GM because of this! bad design.
Really you Holden down and I'll kick their ass All day that bulb is hard to replace I've got better things to do than spend half a day doing that
You saved me 75-130 bucks for a mechanic to do this. Thank you so much for your details!!
How long did it take you?
@@pfcmaurx Oh it took some time lol about an hour or so. But once you do it a few times it doesn’t take as long.
Engineer that designed that SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED !!
Amen
That engineer probably got a BONUS because most people take it to Chevy dealer just to get it done right... Trust me.. They knew exactly what they were doing with this shitty design...
Burned at the stake*
Man u ain't lying, that's crazy just to change a bulb
There was chevy trucks in that same era with that same screwed up design smh
Next video kids: "How to change the air filter", "First, remove engine"
Lol…,
lol, yeah.. seriously... WTF is this. haha
No kidding!
🤣🤣🤣 worst car I ever had
I just got off from a long day bruh thanks for the lol
I suddenly have the urge to slap the engineers who designed this right upside the head.
But all in all. You made a very helpful video. I did short cut a little by not removing the screw and plastic rivets from the fender well on the opposite side.
The entire job took a little over 20 minutes.
Thanks for the help.
I’ve watched a bunch of videos to accomplish this task , and this video was by far the best I’ve come across!!! Thank you
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks brother. You saved me $250!!

Thanks everybody that do these videos, I fix my son's car watching this, God bless you all
Im a single woman and i can't aford to fix my Mailbu head lights in this moment, this video help me a lot and i replaced all the cable sistem that was broken since 2 month.thank you for you wonderful work
You are welcome!
Go to walmart auto department let them do it for $12 not including the parr .
Thanks so much for this video. Just helped my friend out, ended up being his passenger wiring harness that needed to be changed .
You are very welcome! Glad you were able to help your friend and get it figured out. Thanks for watching!
There goes that guy with the sexy voice telling us how to fix stuff again. Got to love that guy. Rock on friend
Thanks for the inspiration buddy!!!
Thanks so much! Worked like a charm. My mechanic wanted $150 in labor.
Very fair price, but nice that you got it handled on your own.
Thanks for the vid. Other vids mentioned that 10mm bolt in the wheelwell, but yours clearly showed where it was. Almost gave up until I watched this.
Great job Chad!! plain, simple & straight to the point.

One of the reasons I miss my 04 Honda
I tried to replace the headlights on our 2011 Malibu this way but not taking off the bumper all the way made it much more difficult getting the headlight assembly aligned properly and the bumper aligned properly on the re-installation. Next time I will disconnect the air dam attached to the bottom of the bumper so the whole bumper is lose and easy to perfectly realign. Leaving the bumper attached at the bottom made it much harder in the end! Lesson learned.
Omg I'm going through this at this very moment. This damn bumper won't align properly!!
@@milesstallworth6167 Same here... Actually, the bumper is not the problem but the light enclosure, although all screws are in where they belong, the dang light fixture is not installed correctly once the bumper is put in again... Bulbs on both sides burned out and now I have to remove everything anyway and redo my hole work... DO TAKE THE WHOLE BUMPER OFF, otherwise it is hard to reattach/reinstall the headlight assembly so it fits snug the way it should... And if it is not right in, you will not have the light on the street where you want it...
your usage of the word "easy" in the title of this video is in the most tortures sense.
It's easy did it myself, lol
My boy just saved me $500 people try to hustle me all the time in this not so cheap world but RUclips came in handy today
Great job Chad it took me 5 min to change out my headlight bulbs just like Ron said 😁
I thought my 2010 Cobalt was lots of work removing assemblies to change the 9007 bulbs, the Malibu is way more work ... excellent video
.. thanks for sharing this .. Cheers
Yeah, this is a horrible design... appreciate you watching!
Mannnnn GOD BLESS YOU I GOT THIS ONE DONE BECAUSE OF YOUR HELP GOOD WORK
I HAVE TO TAKE MY WHOLE BUMPER OFF FOR A DAMN HEADLIGHT 😭😭😭😭 ahhhhhh lord help me
My thought exactly!! 😭😭
Dude I think ima get rid of this car just because of this bs lol
you need a man
Me too. Dealing with that now. I won't buy another Chevrolet ever!
Thanks bud! Saved me $40!!
I would have paid the $40 for them to replace it if it was that cheap around me
Yeah where did you go that quoted an extra $40? I’d rather pay that than $200!
great deal and well worth $40
I got it down packed and saved a lot of money by fixing it myself.
Very helpful. Thanks for speeding up the video appropriately. I would change every bulb available if even one burned out.
My ‘09 Mal needed this exact repair and a mechanic at a highly reputable service shop absolutely sh*t the bed, twice, trying to do this right. With this video I’m definitely going diy and pocketing $300.
Woulda never been able to change the headlights without your video. GR8 job and thanks much!!!
Yo you saved me 120$!! Those rats wanted 220 dollars to replace them. But I just went to autozone and bought both bulbs for 35$ and fixed it myself. They charged me 65$ to diagnose it though
Glad to help and save you money!!! Stinks about the $65 though :( Luckily you were still able to save overall.
This is an excellent video. That being said, there was nothing easy about the process. I’ve cried three times so far and I’m only half way through the process 😭 I will never own another Malibu
Hopefully you got through it in the end! I appreciate you watching!
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll I sure did! I feel accomplished, for sure, but it was super frustrating without power tools and doing it by myself lol
There's no crying in car repair!
You are guaranteed to break something here. Do not use power tools on plastics. Keep in mind that all these parts fit together with slots and tabs, do not force anything. The front bumper hangs on two slots he so bruskly manhandles to get at the headlights. Instead, remove the front bumper completely by removing the 7mm screws and push clips along the bottom. Free the sides of the bumper by pulling them out after removing the hidden bolts and push clips. Lift and swing up the front bumper out from the bottom. The headlights hang on two tabs and slots each. They have to be slightly rotated/shifted down to remove. Always replace bulbs in pairs.
He just did it perfectly fine. So it is not a “GuARantEE” it’ll break anything slow mfk
You are correct, I tried doing it like this video explains, but to get the dang light fixture back on is a challenge because you wiggled them out but cannot wiggle them back in straight with the tight space... Removing the bumper completely will allow this to go faster actually...
I strongly suspect we are fighting bad bulb sockets rather than the bulbs burning out. Test the bulb you remove for continuity.
Well I certainly hope after going through ALL this that you changed Bulbs for both sides ? If Not - that would be like jacking up a car and only replacing 1 shock lol
All that to replace a bulb? That ain't right. Ridiculos. Thanks for the video, that will save me some money
I get mine changed at Chevy dealership for 65 bucks but now I will do it for free.. thanks
Hey thanks. You made it simple enough to understand. I think I'll be replace mine this weekend.
You are very welcome! It is pretty easy after you get started. :) Good luck!
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll I actually did it last night! I had several small bolts underneath the bumper that needed to be removed as well but it wasn't hard. From start to finish it took about 1hr and cost $9 (bolt remover and extender). I took pics along the way because not many will believe that I did this all by myself. My dad asked to help, but I told him I had an instructional video on RUclips, so I was fine. I felt so accomplished! And rich too since it cost me over $280 when I took it to the mechanic last year for a headlight replacement. They "claimed" they had to remove my whole bumper so that's why it was so expensive. Anyway thanks again. You ROCK!
That is an amazing follow up! Thank you for that! I am so happy I could help and save you lots of money. :) I appreciate you watching!
@@TheProfessor1908 great job DT wanna change mine for me !
Thanks, you made the job a lot easier.
Malibu's have a issue with the headlight plugs getting hot and melting , especially on passenger side , which causes headlights to blow , Dorman makes replacement plugs , most chain garages wont tell you this so every 6 months , $$$$$$ in their pocket , dont get gms headlight harness , they'll just do the same thing
This is very easy. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for making this video with so much detail. I'm watching this one so I can change a bulb on my girlfriend's car, and I must say, this is such a terrible design lol
NOOOO! RIP camera! Well done video. It helped me out a lot.
this has got to be the most complicated headlight bulb replacement I've ever seen. Why did they design it this way?
We were becoming too independent 😆 I definitely won’t miss this!
Gm=general mouth breathers because they don’t have a single brain cell for car design :l
It's called the Obama years
It was easy sitting at a computer and using your mouse.
They want you to pay the dealership whenever you need a new bulb. Once your car is in they can sell you on tons of other stuff whether or not it's needed
i would trade in my car before I did this!! WOW
Im def thinking about it
I know people who did
I've never owned a car that was disposable after the headlight went out, but I'll never own another.
Every late 2000s Malibu I see had one headlight out, including mine. This is why.
Thanks u saved me time and money ! Took about 45 min to a hour had to fight with those push rivets and I thought the bolt over the tire would be the hardest lol but they came out pretty easy
Don't have to do all this. Take the 3 clips in the wheel well, then take bolt that's lined up with crease of bumper and snap it down. Then unscrew bolt that holds headlight in place and that's it. There's another video on You Tube that show this procedure.
Bobby Raye link?
^^^^ @BobbyRaye what's the link to this easier video you speak of????
Still waitin for that link Bob.
I’ll tell you what Bobby, you need to drop that link 😂
This was super helpful, I got it done in 15min, peace of cake
You are very welcome! 15 minutes might be contesting at record time on this darn car! lol Glad you got it fixed
15 minutes...? Quit lying dude 😂 this is almost an hour job for a fuckin headlight. I hate the fact that something so simple takes so much work to do.
@@tonyb4587 You should try changing a headlight in a 2006 Maxima that one is a PITA
Ryan Yosh I can’t relate and something tells me I’m glad I can’t 😅🤣
15 minutes 🤣🤣
I just bought a 2012 malibu. When buying it the guy told me one of the headlights were out. I said that's no big deal and I bought the car. After buying a new bulb and trying to swap it out real quick, I find myself on RUclips trying to figure out how it's done. I now see why the guy got pretty quiet when I said it was no big deal to change a headlight bulb.
Thank you so much this really helps me because I thought I had to pull my side off 🤗
Well both of my bulbs are out now so I got no choice. Thanks for the vid.
This is the reason I will never buy a Malibu again
Older ones and namely sealed beam much easier
Thanks so much... saved me $167!!
You’re welcome! Glad to help!
Just did it. Good video still relevant. Thanks sir.
Plastic Pry tool💪🏾 thank you
Cannot beat the 2008 impala bulb change. 4-5 minutes tops
Good video explaining each step much appreciated but a bit more editing would make it great
First off he didn't use bulb grease so its going to blow prematurely anyway and if its that hard I would replace them both w the highest quality bulbs and of course use bulb grease. Always use bulb grease unless you want to do this at least 3 times a year
Thanks for the video. It was very helpful!
Best video shows that u don't have to take off the bottom screws.
Really good video! You made it simple and easy.
Great video but you did not have to take the plastic pins in screw out of the passenger side if you were only doing the driver side it would have still been loose enough to pull the bumper because you took off the black splash guard from the top
I thought the same thing
I believe the book calls for 2.0 hours of labor if I remember
Yeah it took us about 3 hours the first time. The hard part is getting the screws in the tire area and also clipping the bumper back on. I think it took about 2 the second time. I took it to the garage the last two times because it's such a pain in the ass.
Malinda Bert u I’ll
Kiki k.
With power tools 1hr is possible. But it's a 'special design'.
I can’t believe chevy let this crap go beyond prototype phase
My husbands been putting off changing my daughters head light (few months now) she’s already had a warning ticket so I’m determined to do it myself. I did her rear break light last year and that was pretty easy. Who ever designed this should be punched in the balls
I just did this.. I am a mechanic. It's relatively easy. You do not have to remove the whole bumper. Just drop it a little bit, just enough to have access to those two bolts. Then, pull headlight assembly straight out to avoid breaking any tabs. When reinstalling bumper, make sure tabs align with holes and you will hear them clicking indicating they have fallen into place and seated properly tapping bumper gently.
update, don't forget to check the bezel for the grommet left from the old bulb. sometimes it sticks in there.
Thank u for your vid
My pleasure!
Is the bolt under the wheel well the same size as the bolts on the top cover?
It would help if you would of showed how to put everything back on
Thank you
I changed the headlights on my 89 silverado yesterday, took 4 1/2 minutes. Only 6 screws, no fender removal, no bumper removal, no grill removal, no bolts, no clips, didnt need a shop/garage/work area, just driveway.
Thank you so much Chad.
You're welcome!!!
The GM engineer who designed this must have got his degree at IKEA.
Cruising with summer tires in the winter?
For all they haters: most cars today are very similar.
The stupidity of the engineers is amazing.
Thanks!! 😊
Good video
I hope you changed the other headlight while it was accessible
I’m glad I totaled my Malibu!!
What tools do i need?! Can i do this without power tools
10 milometer socket , 1/4 ratchet and extension. Plus the tool to remove those plastic clips.
Yes you can I did it myself
Thanks man very informative 🙏🏽
I wish I had seen this video before being charged a fortune for having it changed! Will now only do it myself!
Dealerships are crazy with what they charge... There is always next time!
can you please tell me what tools you used to take the bolts out? I’m going to ask a friend to help me do this tomorrow.
Thanks for this. Appreciate it
Top side Bumper removal not necessary.
Thanks for Vid anyway...
To check the engine oil level: step 1->remove engine from vehicle.....
You’ve absolutely gotta be kidding me, I want the name and address of the engineer that designed this atrocity.
The most annoying light bulb replacement ever… Mazda CX-7 is a close second.
Hahahha.they do this to charge you more money it's wasn't an accident these Malibus are good running cars they need to make some money off them lol only problem I had so far is the light bulb and the track control! Other wise these run nice and with the gas prices there very easy on gas ⛽
Do you have a video on how to change out the socket? The original socket has three wires, but the new ones have two. I'm trying to figure out how to splice wires together, but I'm not sure which wires go together and so far it isn't working.
Does the passenger side come apart the same way? I have watched several videos and most remove more bolts. I will try your way
When you get a chance can you show us how to change the small signal light by door? Idk the exact name for it but I think it's called side marker.
You the best ,thanks bro
Bro bro; you better change the other side as well. Because you know after all that it will blow out next week; And your taking it all apart again...Thanks GM for the great design..SMFH!
Is that bolt by the driver side wheel reverse threaded? I tried going counter-clockwise on it, but it won't budge.
I have my Malibu emergency module, how do I fix the failure?
"eAsY aNd FaSt" 🙄
Ikr thats ridiculous thats why see so many of that model with only 1 headlight nice car but what a screw up design😒
Very stupid design by Chevy, having to take the whole bumper off for a headlight.
Great video bro
Thank you!
Seems like car manufacturers around this time just came up with ideas out this planet to make life difficult for their costumers. Chevy is not alone: on Honda Civic, Acura the access is under the fender and the plastic liner has to be removed to create access. The Acura with their fancy lights is even more tricky.
What size are the pop-up clips?
What stupid engineering team approved this idiotic design? All that to change a light bulb. Shameless way to make money for the service department at the dealership. Wtf?!
