I agree with Pierre 100% on his comments about BAT. I know all of of this first hand. Thank you, Pierre for courageously vocalizing the truth.
Pierre Hedary is the most honest individual I have met. Not only as a human being, but as a professional classic MB mechanic. I sincerely doubt there is any one like him in the classic MB community. His job is his vocation and his magnanimity toward all of us on time and knowledge makes him a real leader in the MB mechanic community.

Pierre is absolutely correct. BAT does not return phone calls, emails or any thing else. I’ve personally contacted them multiple times about auctioning various cars over the years and never once received a response. This latest round was on a 190SL that ultimately went to Barrett Jackson. They missed out on a massive sale because they wouldn’t respond.
I’ve said this before. I’ve had auction cars in my shop multiple times and they’ve all had many undisclosed issues. The next time I get one in, I think I’ll do a full video of everything that we find. As a collector that owns over 20 vehicles, most of them classic Mercedes, I would never ever in 1 million years purchase a vehicle off BAT or any other online auction site. I would go to Mecum or Barrett, Jackson or auction. They’re simply too much risk with messing around with those sites. As far as I’m concerned, they all need to be shut down.

First I want to say this man has an incredible commitment to family. some family members need intense care and he provides it. Next, I thought I knew quite a bit about my 1985 Mercedes 300D. Compared to him and his staff I was wrong. they are incredibly intensely funded with knowledge. So I said: “fix it, fix it right, don’t cut corners , and don’t use junk parks.” The reply was they don’t do it any other way. I am so happy I found these guys. If you have an old MB your gotta be nuts not to take it there if it needs repair or service

I bought a nice MB from bat from a very reputable dealer. Paid top dollar. Still had to redo all the basic maintenance with proper fluids, plugs, etc. I am spending lots of money over 10k to bring the car to a good restored state doing work myself... Do not matter who you buy the car from plan on spending 10-15k if you want it running properly. That said, if it has rust stay away... If it looks good , does not necessarily mean it is mechanically as good.... Pierre knows his stuff, the small things that need to be changed on the car can cost lots of time and money.. ex flex discs, mounts, suspension, not to mention all the old sensors that would need to be changed......

WHOAH BIG FELLA!! So you have a couple of concerns it seems. One is the client not getting the car they think they are buying, and secondly you "feel" as if they are paying too much? I think that is what I am getting from you.
To your first point, just like on any other auction site, or on the internet in general, reputation matters. Those of us that do have stellar reputations, you just made our job a tick harder. I am the guy that does the 300-400 pictures and shows EVERYTHING! Many of us also provide those videos as to put the customer behind the wheel and try to create an experience and assess the car as if they were there in person. Aside from that, all we can do is invite them over or have them send someone on their behalf for a pre-sale inspection.
One of the biggest issues I have with you is you seem to be a bit hypocritical in some of your "opinion". And it's mostly opinion without any real studies or facts. You talk about "people overpaying".... Based on what? Solely your opinion. Who is to say a car sold for 25% higher than it's value?? Every car is different, so I think you are wrong there. But you rattled off some figures, you said something like if a car sells for $18-25k and then needs $30k in work, well then you just got a bad deal. Ok, maybe you don't buy a $20,000 Benz and even consider spending $30k on it. Maybe you just leave it. Some cars are just not worth trying to get near perfect. With your argument, if some one GAVE me a Mercedes for free that was worth let's say $15k and then I had to take it to your shop and come at me with a $30k bill, where is the problem here? Nothing wrong with spending some money to make a car "safe". It sounds to me like if a car shows up at your shop you are trying to make everything "new". That being the case, some $15-$20k Benzes, as long as there are no safety issues, are best to be left alone. And that can be said with any make or model.
Finally, all the time you spent making these two videos, you could had plenty of time to get that haircut.

I think this video is a defining moment in Mercedes Classics history. I don’t recall Pierre actually responding to too many comments on his videos. His defense of his positions on BAT were solid. At the end of the day, if you want to buy any car from an auction or sight unseen, at least consider using a inspection service. Hopefully one other than Lemon Squad. I hired them to “inspect” a 1995 E300 in Maryland. They reported zero leaks of any kind. My wife and I picked it up and drove it home to NJ. We had to stop once to refill the engine oil even though it was full at the dealer. Once home, I discovered that the only fluid not leaking was brake fluid. The puddle of diesel, oil, transmission fluid was more than a foot in diameter. Lemon squad said there were no leaks and that car must have started leaking on the drive home. So, I’m not trustful of inspection outfits, either. Given that, you have to play the odds and buy from places that don’t have a rep for selling classic Mercedes that need significant work unless they honestly disclose that to be the case.

Howard Silvers is a good dude. I bought my 1983 300CD from Howard. He is a great seller. Everything as advertised. A ton of photos and documents. Car is immaculate. Pierre reviewed the BAT ad, offered advice, and agreed it showed well. I ditched the veggie oil system that was on it. Did I pay more than market? Yes, but I got a premium turn key looker with no hidden issues. Howard had a few videos of cold start, a cruise, etc. I love my 300CD. Shout out to Howard Silvers.

Good follow up video Pierre. I think one thing to mentioned is the reasons why cars are being sold at auction in the first place. Auctions are generally for high end, rare collector cars or for cars they could not sell in the traditional way (private party). Most vehicles sold at auction are the ones they couldn’t sell. Dealers keep the good vehicles and auction the junk. You know what I mean? If I had a perfect 190SL and I needed to sell it, using an auction would be my last choice. Instead I would find a broker and try to sell it for top dollar. When buying a vehicle at an auction you need to understand why the vehicle is there. When you purchase a house and need a loan the bank requires that you have an inspection before they will loan you the money. Why are people not having these auction cars properly inspected before purchasing?

Tony - have been avidly following your channel for the past year. Love what you have done, looking forward to the conclusion.
Auctions (whether online/BaT or in person like Mecum) are designed to get people irrationally caught up with the emotion of pursuing and gambling to buy the car and think they are getting something that is desirable to others. Getting a pre-purchase inspection is far too rational and time-consuming for the average person, who wants the thrill of the chase and the instant gratification of buying the car they want at that moment.
It has always amazed me how many people out there buy cars simply on emotion, rather than actually doing the due diligence to research the car, get it inspected, research the seller (especially if they are a flipper-dealer), and research what should be a good price. BaT’s emotional call results in cars going for 20-100% higher than they should, although this effect has diminished over the past year as more and more people get extended on their credit cards, HELOCs, and loans because of rising interest rates.

@@gerryvanzandt7894 Hi there Gerry. I have followed your many posts on the forums for years. I purchased my 560SL at an auction in California. It took me two years before I pulled the trigger on this one. I hired an inspection service who first inspects the vehicle. I tell them to take specific photos that I was interested in and I told them what to look for. They did mechanical tests like a cold start, compression tests and so on. Once we agreed on a vehicle I then flew out to California and I did my own inspection and I settled on a maximum price before the auction began. I paid $6,000 for my 560SL. When I bought they were not as popular as they are today. The car ran, I checked the chains, cam lobes and guides, I inspected the subframes and everything I could think of. I knew it needed a rear seal & a transmission rebuild and other minor work. Even after all this I still found many things wrong after the purchase. For one the rear seal leak ended up being a spun seal that had damaged the rear, cover. That’s when my rabbit hole began. Any vehicle that is 30-40 years old will have problems you can’t see and that’s why they end up in Pierre’s shop.

I agree with you observation as to why cars wind up at auctions instead of dealers. The other thing to consider is that many times, these cars, even if they don’t have issues aren’t appealing to the dealers clientele.

The whole idea of 300 photos is that it helps to sell the product. It sells confidence. And that's it. Does it show the whole store? Not necessarily. The fact BaT don't engage in MB communities could be because there is a risk to lose reputation. If you claim that you're the best, then why should you literally prove it to everyone. They market themselves as a first and largest car auction for enthusiasts. If they come out to people then they would have to answer some tough questions. And this could damage their reputation. Btw company is owned by Hearst. Regarding MBMarket I think they are in a role of challengers. That's why they are trying to prove that they are not another copycat of BaT but something better. What I don't like about all these auctions is they force you to set a reserve price that may be lower than the amount you want to get for your car. It's like either you agree with such reserve or don't use that service. In some cases they force you to list it as a no reserve car.

I bought my Mercedes on BaT about 3 years ago. It was a good experience, not a great experience. A couple things were not disclosed to me by the selling dealer which I know they must have known about. But that happens with even with your local brick and mortar used car lots too. The difference is that BaT auctions command top dollar for some reason. It's all about DD, but that's difficult if you're not there in person.
