Danny Carey, the reason i started playing the drums............also the reason i quit
I see things a little differently especially as a pro Drummer and Teacher. I get inspired by guys like Danny, buddy rich, Steve smith etc you should try getting a kit again🥁 once the big is there it’s hard to get rid of it, lol
made my day xD
hahaha
You can do that too. I don't mean right now. He is showing what humans, including you, are capable of. Do you really think Danny Carey is thinking "I'm playing polymetric 3 against 4," while playing? No, he is in the zone. One thing at a time. You don't start out with that drum kit and if you do you will be so overwhelmed. You can be whatever you want to be, BUT pay your dues and respect and be inspired. Don't think for a second any of the drum teachers reacting to this video will actually be able to play it.
Appreciate your humor, egratudo 😉
Inside his head, Danny is calculating the Unified Theory of the Universe. His other four brains take care of the drumming.
Stars tend to go supernova and planets tilt on their axis, heavenly bodies move and brighten as if winking when Danny plays.
Scientists confirmed that Danny's frequencies are capable of creating black holes
@@TSPH1992 eyes full of wonder !
Saw the Unified Theory comment, as well as the 4 brain comment made by 2 different people on another reaction made before this one lol.
@@sandrasmith7501 Congratulations?
Danny Carey isn't even real. This is fake news, lol. He's an octopus. He's better at drumming than I am at walking.
lmao that is just an awesome post.....because any that is into drumming has probably thought that after seeing him play
To me as a newb, it seems like he is playing 4 different rythms at one point, each arm and each leg on a different beat all perfectly melded together. I can't concieve how it is even possible.
@@michaelb1761 agreed. Exact same feeling. I've been playing for 2 years and I think I need another 100 of practice to get to that level
great description, I was thinking more of an Alian just visiting us on planet earth
He's 58! He does things that young kids could even dream of doing one day. The man is a machine!
but its unfair too... because he is an octopus and we are only humans...^^
@@seelenwinter6662 something is up with him..he ain't human that's for goddamn sure!
Had of pleasure of seeing DC do his thing live. He is phenomenal. Omg absolutely incredible.
Danny is gonna live to 200 years old, and he will still be drumming this amazingly even then. That dude is ripped!
We can only hope.
I will NEVER experience a better live show than tool. I stared at danny the whole time. 3 rows away from front row
Wow, amazing! Sadly I have never seen Danny live. Hopefully one day!
Luck boy👍
@@leolvr5076 had to fight for 6 plus hours through black veil brides, STP, and Alice in chains to be front row. Idk how i didn't piss myself
@@jacobsomen8755 ha ha 👍 managed to watch them in Brisbane Australia somewhere way up on the right lol best show ever🤯walls were bleeding that night lol😄
dude you guys don't understand. All the videos you see of Danny are amazing, but when you FEEL the kick drum and toms and everything when it is mic'd up and you're right in front of it, makes it 100x more insane. Those who have been to dubstep concerts know what I'm talking about.
He is holding 4 separate timing rhythms during the breakdown and shifting them independently. Amazing! I bet if you take off his shorts you'd find hes actually playing 5 rhythms. 8)
Pisser mate :)
LOL!
It's crazy. I can mess around with both hands and left foot on the first part of the breakdown, but that double bass throws me off. 0 chance lol.
Oh . So thats why hes called the octopus
Danny Carey and Neil Peart are 2 of the most unique drummers in the last 50 years. If you are not inspired by one of the two of them then you aren't aspiring to greatness.
strwbrryswisher420 truth
Danny Carey was close friends with Neil and was his mentor too 😉
@@harryskoulas233 What?!
Yes you are right! Neil has mentored so many
Ah yes, the 1843/138 time signature that makes me look like I have no rythym at all.
Danny said it was 33/16
About the best analysis I've seen so far. Well done. I can do the bit where he holds the cymbal with his hand and hits it 2x in the middle of the song lol. He's "an innovator and motivator" for sure. To see a video of him playing one of my faves is awesome. Good job
I've been wondering about why he did that. As far as I can tell his drumming is very similar to the studio version. But those particular strokes aren't. Is it some sort of signal to the rest of the band? Keep the tempo?
@@infilt It mirror the guitar at that particular moment if you hadn't noticed - I personally love it and it's my favourite part of the song! Why did he do that? Possibly to fit the feel and rythm of the song? Accent the guitar? Who knows, all I know is that I LOVE this song and hear/see something different each time I listen to it or watch it.
Yup great tune, and I think you’re right he is doubling the rhythm in that part!!
I think the reason Tool as a band are so successful and just downright fantastic at what they do, is each member is so good at what they do. When this comes together, we all get to witness their genius. DC is just... how can you describe him? He is unreal he's that good
Spot on! Each member of Tool is at the top of their game.
There's another part to this, this is all true, but the real reason they do so well together is the singer does not put himself ahead of the rest of the band. He's just another instrument. How he sits back in the shadows and lets everyone else shine equally. It really helps make them a band and not just some guys playing with a singer.
An octopus went to an audition for a dummer. Then he saw Danny Carey, so he left.
Good one
... He is not just a basketball fan, this dude could have played basketball for a few college teams,
but he was like "nah, I am to bad to go pro".
This jersey is a tribute to his college times and was a gift.
Danny is just an amazing dude.
He wears different jerseys to different cities depending on the team. When I saw them in Nola he was wearing a pelicans jersey.
By far best reaction/review I have seen about "Pneuma". I was glad to see that it did not take 37 stop-interruptions to make this review. Nicely done.. well played..
Thanks Very much!! It’s been a learning curve for me as far as how many times to stop! This song is very complicated so had to be some stops. In my new reaction video’s I don’t stop at all, lol, but I try not to talk tooo much so like I said im learning and hopefully getting better!
I love how controlled and measured Danny's strikes are.
Truth. Many drummers can do polyrhythms and high levels of syncopation, but the dynamics, groove and feel are what sets Danny apart. To keep those crazy time signatures while making every hit sing is mind blowing.
Best analysis of Danny I've ever heard from a drummer. Truly awesome dude. You matched my own thoughts when you would appreciate his choices in fills in his performance. Listening to you appreciate his performance in detail was like listening to someone read my mind.
Thanks so much for your kind words! I’m glad I could share my thoughts and they are similar to your own! Friggin awesome!
This video was much better than the version you took down. Have you ever tried his signature drum sticks? Have several drummer friends who use them and love them. Audio is much better. You're right about him being a motivator. My buddy's 14yr old son plays, so I gave him a copy of the new album and he was blown away. His parents aren't too happy because he is now practicing all the time, but the young man thanks me every time I see him. Got to love it. Thanks for sharing your insight and knowledge. Will be looking forward to the next reaction.✌🤘
No I haven’t tried them, but would like to! Thanks for your comment, glad it’s better! I agree audio is much better! Nice to see your mentoring young drummers that’s excellent!!
Good breakdown. As a guitarist I love hearing a drummers reaction to this. I have so much respect for drummers. You mentioned carter Beauford, he has a drum cam out you should do if you haven’t already.
It's so funny. In college my roommate was a drummer. Music was his major. I got introduced to some great stuff just because. I became more of a jazz guy. I even brought a Billy Cobham album to a show and he signed it. One of my favorite things. But Danny is next level. I can see four things going on at once. It's amazing actually. Those quiet poly-rhythms are just mind boggling.
He can do 4 different polyrhythms at once, maybe 5, but not with pants on!
Well done with figuring out these time signatures, dude!!!
Thanks very much appreciate your comment
He is an absolute beast on the drums. Wow.
This cat is gonna be legendary and studied for years to come.
My brother and I followed them on the 10k tour I think our 6th or 7th show, one night we got "shitty" seats on the side of the stage, behind a riser, overlooking the stage from the rear, it was magnificent, we sat a hundred feet over Danny's shoulder, Maynard's little platfirm was right behind him that night from our perspective, it was perfect.
Makes your head spin if you try to pay attention to everything he's doing instead of just listening to it
The best drummer to walk the planet!! No other drummer in history has more responsibly keep the times
Tool is the shit man ! Love ALL their music! They sound just like the lbs in concert , even indoors !

Awesome, thanks for posting!!
Vic Firth did an excellent job editing Danny’s two extra arms out of the video.
1 of the best drummers of ALL times.
I cannot figure out how he makes something so complex seem so effortless.
I can't get enough of DC. A true gem. On Mount Rushmore of all time greats without a doubt.
Best analysis of Danny I've seen.
With absolute awe and respect from a fellow drummer..
Top job sir..😎🤘
Thanks very much!! 😎🥁
@@drumteacher43 only just realised that it's a few years back.
🤣
Still great..
I have a electronic Roland kit due to wife restrictions.🤔
But my little lad is getting into drumming now, he's 7.
So I'm absolutely going to check your channel out mate.
I'm actually 50ish, so I grew up with cozy as a influence and buddy rich and of course stu Copland.
Danny Carey makes me want to quit..
And tool were here in Manchester England a few months ago.
They just get better..
Cheers my friend..
🤘😎
Thanks for checking my channel out! I do reactions, gear reviews, lessons, top 10’s play alongs, basically everything drums!
I’m also influenced by every drummer you named plus so many more!
Meshuggah - Bleed (live). One of the heaviest metal bands out there.. but even if you don't like growling vocals, their drummer is something to behold.
Thomas Haake is killer! They are a great band! I will definitely do a reaction to Thomas! Thanks for requesting him!
Legend stays the Hindu god Vishnu payed a visit to his mother when his father wasn't looking.
And that's how Danny Carey was born
Danny has got to be physically SPENT after a show!
I was just grooving...
The cymbal you like at 4:00 is Danny's 22" signature series dry heavy ride cymbal from Paiste. It's pricey!
Wow thanks for letting me know!! I’ll have to check it out! I had the Stewart Copeland signature ride, I sold it and regret that decision every day, lol
@@drumteacher43 You're very welcome. Great video!
It’s Mathew P from capstone , I searched up Danny Carrey and found this lol . Thanks for teaching me , miss learning from you man
Hey Matt, awesome to hear from you ! I miss teaching you! Your always welcome to
Message me for a lesson in my home studio! Hope your doing well. How old are you now and tell me what your up to!
Yea, that struck me too...that ride sounds incredible. Also, most miss the hi-hat rigged right-foot for the polyrythm break-up. BTW...Nice shoutout to Carter! LoVE
The tabla drum is an old Korg Wavedrum using the tabla drone preset.
Well done! Whoever edited did a good job!
Danny doesn't even play to a time signature. Legend has it he just plays to the song and its a take it or leave it situation.
When i saw this video the first time Drummers Changed for me. The Stick becomes a magic wand and he is the wizzard.
Math rock. Love it. Nice reaction mate
i thought he ment meth rock...lol
The king is dead...long live the king
Along with nico....
Yeeessss
This was a wonderfully insightful video! Thank you for your great commentary
Thanks for your kind words! Greatly appreciated!
FANTASTIC BREAKDOWN!!!
Glad you liked it!
Awesome reaction no pausing !
Danny Carey is the reason I got a day job! 🤣🤘😎
Excellent
Drum Teacher -“Okayyyy, soooo. I know a little bit about what’s going on here”.
That’s when you know it’s some other worldy shit.
More of what you never knew you needed!!!
Amazing reaction, great insights, no pauses? even!! Chappo!!
Thanks very much! Sometimes I pause in reactions. Everyone is a little different!
He's a master artist in his element.
Danny could have been the best news reporter ever the way he keeps up with the times.
Very true!!
Dude!! Thank you for noticing the Neal Peart influence. I've been saying that for a while. Obviously Danny is his own beast but I love hearing the Peart influence.
I went to one of Danny Carey’s drum clinics a few yrs back and he acknowledged many influential drummers with Neil being at the top of the list!
@@drumteacher43 wow dude that must have been a pretty awesome experience!!
@@spuuuuuz yes it was awesome! I’ve been to over 600 drum clinics, Danny’s was among the top 5
@@drumteacher43 wow man, I love hearing things like this! I think because of lockdown it's great to remember these things and if Tool play in Ireland in the future I'll be there!!
@@spuuuuuz yeah, they put on a really good show! I saw them 2 yrs ago in Toronto and really enjoyed it. If you get a chance to see Tool I would definitely go!🥁😎
Love your analysis! Subscribed! Danny is one of my all time fav musicians...would be so intriguing to be inside his head while writing music
Math rock. Never thought of it that way. Guess he be the Hawkings of the drums then!! He is sitting down....😂👍🏻 Well done review/reaction.
New follower of your channel right now. Liked your comments of Danny performance.
All that to say this...he's killin it! Think he has a seperate brain for each limb.
Talented, gifted drummer, one of a kind🤟😉
Yeah it's Killer! The guy is a machine!
Danny best drummer living.
Ha Ha, its THE teacher (Danny) teaching the teacher! I saw TOOL play in November- (2nd time) at Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit, NOBODY plays better live than these guys! They brought the house down! Phenomenal stage and light show as well. All four band members are so musically gifted in their own way, Maynard, Danny, Justin, and Adam. Fear Inoculum album gets better every time I listen to it! Tool does not get the recognition they deserve compared to so many of the so called "music bands" out there now, but hey, who cares; they're only worth about $50 million a piece!
i feel the same with Living Colour also, another extremely good performances band.
great vid man, best analysis i've seen of this
Not just a Boston shirt but a Larry Bird shirt with Casey on the back.
I feel like Danny heard some Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart and taught himself to play their duals himself. He's an octopus with a metronome in each appendage.
lol yup maybe! He is very talented at playing polyrhythmic phrasings!
There are several drum cam videos of Kai Hahto the ex-drummer of Wintersun and now the drummer of Nightwish, I am really interested to see your reaction to those if you would be so inclined.
Thanks I’ll check him out. I am a nightwish fan
Danny Carey what a gift, he is by far among the greatest modern drummers, please check out Lateralus my god there is a simple break ie pocket in that song that kills you'll know it when you hear it
You're a real cool guy. Never tried to drum but wish I could get into it! Great video :)
There's no electric heads, the beginning is him hitting the rim with different points on the sticks producing different tones as he went up and down them, Buddy Rich would do it as well way back when
he has two different time signatures going on between his feet and his hands
Absolutely correct in the B section or bridge he plays 3/16 hands against 4/4, feet polymeter
And this is the place at least when he/them lose me.. i just cannot understand how is that possible!?? You need one hell of a lizzard brains.. And Danny even does volume change ups on there what is even more harder i would imagine.. is just is amazing what 0.0000000001% of us humans can do, when you are top on one thing, you really are something special..
Really enjoyed this reaction/BREAKDOWN. Very knowledgeable and concise
Thank you very much! It’s people like you that make it worthwhile!!
Danny is playing with the best musicians on the market. Vocals... bass... guitars. Dont count just feel.
You should comment the left hand triplet at 9:48. Amazing!
insane!!!
I believe the laugh just after the 11:12 mark is because he flubs it for half a beat on the ride, then gets back on track. Probably my favorite part of the entire video for that reason.
Best reaction by far.
I love watching this great drummers play. My fav is Thomas Lang the guy has 4 brains
Thomas Lang is killer! I attended his “ boot camp for drummers weekend” a few years back. it was awesome and he was amazing, both as a drummer and a person!
@@drumteacher43 he also seems to be a great teacher.
Check out my new Thomas Lang reaction video as you requested! Cheers!
The call Danny the octopus. They call Neil the KRAKEN 😉👍
Thanks for the analysis. Best yet.
Great breakdown man, keep it coming
Best drummer in history of drumming!!!!
Crazy he is opening the hi hat with his right foot during that one part.
It's 33/8, alternating with 25/8. Batshit insane time signatures. In other words, welcome to the wonderful world of Tool. Polyrhythms are where they live.
What I love about Danny and tool is; even though there are many different time signatures and difficult polyrhythmic patterns outlining the music, the songs themselves are still very musical and are laced with great feels and phrases!
Ok
I'm buying drums.
Didn't know Ricky Gervais was a drum teacher
That's his side hustle
"Danny's an individual. Nobody plays like him." Exactly what i thought after seeing the Vic Firth video.
The first Tool song I heard was Aenema, i was more hooked to the odd drumming more than anything in that song. And a few years later Lateralus dropped and I listened to Schism and again the drums were something special. Never heard a whole song being played on snare off like that before. That's where I knew Danny Carey is no ordinary drummer and nobody ever plays like him.
Hey someone who actually calles out that its 7/4 (14/8) and 5/8.
Your analysis is awesome. Thank you.
Tool is a huge fan of the 7/8 time signature, could be a lot of what you're hearing.
This is one of my favourite drumplayers. Resting his arm a lot on his knee, Low setup, sitting straight. Less is more, rest when you can, why going high when low is easier, sitting straight (that is what my music teacher always did say to me) its better for the back.
easily impressed by those of us that are talented
I saw Tool in der Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt Main a smaller Arena with a good sound, that was the only Indoor Show of Tool in Germany with the 10.000 Days Tour, great Show by the way. You should check out PT Drummer Gavin Harrison
That’s awesome! I did a reaction to Gavin with porcupine tree, check it out on my channel!
The dislikes are guitar players
He reminds me of Bill Bruford during the King Crimson discipline era.
Love Bill Bruford! One of the most underrated drummers in the history of music!
I know King Crimson was a big influence for Tool. Good ear 👍🏼
Great analysis! You should react to Billy Cobham playing his drum solo from 1976, pretty please!
Thank you very much! I love Billy Cobham! I will add it to my list.
What a legend. Can you do a video Camparing Neil Peart and Danny Carey?
That dry ride is his signature from paiste, one of the best sounding rides I've ever played
Loved your breakdown of this.
Pneuma is an ancient Greek word for "breath", and in a religious context for "spirit" or "soul i love tool
