  • In this video, I do a deep dive into the complex rhythms of Tool's "Pneuma" and explore a tumultuous internal debate: is it in 7/4 or 6/8? Join me as I share my personal journey of appreciation for Tool's intricate music. I'll discuss the challenges of analyzing Danny Carey's drumming, the various interpretations I've come across, and my thoughts on the best transcription out there. If you're a drummer or a Tool fan, this video is for you! Don't forget to subscribe, like, and comment with your thoughts and insights on this rhythmic madness.

Great video. Thought and effort put into the editing made it a joy to watch.
Fairly certain that Justin came up with the original riff. I want to say I recall him saying once that the band doesn’t really count and counting only comes into play if it’s essential to the recording process.
So they make complicated music simply because it feels right in the moment.

Thanks for the comment bro! That definitely supports my suspicions. These guys are way too good to be sitting around counting shit. 😅

I will use an analogy to learning any complex movement. Step one is to break it down so your conscious mind can "force" you body to move correctly often slowly and build the neural pathways. Way down the line of steps you must "forget" that structure you had, like scaffolding once the building can stand on its own. This happens in sports, martial arts, even the simple act of learning or re-learning to walk. Notation is scaffolding it need not be present in the finished pierce of art.
Even listening to music can have this curve. There are complex songs I did not like when I first heard them but now I find awe inspiring. Because I have internalized more ways of relating to the music.

What a brilliant analogy and so eloquently put. I have absolutely experienced this and wish I understood this more when I was a young practicing musician still with years ahead of me. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. 🔥

I think there’s a reason Danny’s jersey has number 33 in that video. I like to count the song as 12/8, 11/8, 10/8, which is reminiscent of what they did in Lateralus.

As other folks have commented it is 33. Counting it as alternating 6/8 and 5/8 doesn’t feel right to me though. It unlocked for me when I count it 9/8 5/8 9/8 5/8 5/8. Aligned with the guitar.

Yes, the bass line is right there too, clear as day, counting as you mention. I prefer to think in the 3s and 2s when playing, but appreciate for drummers they need longer bars for the many hits to sync.

i think a lot of the hype for this exact video is because weve never had offical pro audio and video live stuff from tool. theres only the sober vhs one from literally 30 years ago. they could make fortune if theyd release concert dvds/bluray like almost every other band. even creed had a live bluray.

14/8 (3+3+3+3+2) 12/8 (3+3+3+3)+ 7/8 (2+3+2). If you count each grouping it ends up being 5,4, and 3 which is cool. The first bass note is the pickup. Check out the channel Aslan and his video on this.

My question becomes how the hell is this popular for people with no musical concept other then 4/4?TOOL is one of the shows I've been to where you know who the drummers bassist and guitarists are because of timing. Then you watch the fans. Not even close to the pocket until 4/4 kicks off. Love this band

    So,
    6/8 6/8 5/8
    6/8 5/8 5/8.
Isn't that 17/8, 16/8 broken into sexy pieces?
For instance - I count the bounce for the bass line as
    12,123,123,123,123,12,
123,123,123,123,12,123... Which depending on what line you start counting is the same thing.
It's just what happens when you let Justin's circular riffs dictate your time signature (see 7empest's 21/8 for other examples).

According to members of the band, the main beat is 33/8 or 33/16. Take that as it is. Honestly i dont care what the beat is, I've heard it so much ive memorized it and i can never miss the beat again. I have a problem.
