How IQ and Intelligence Affect Our Life (or Not!)

  • A high IQ apparently strongly predicts good grades, a good career, and even health and mortality and stuff. For my father intelligence was all that matters. Ever since my brother Charles was diagnosed to be a gifted child, all he talked about was IQ and intelligence research. #learn #IQ

    This story is amazing, because it has a lot of subtle elements that match my personal experience.
    The father (who represents the scientific consensus on IQ, because his mathematical interpretation of IQ graphs is perfectly explained) is presented as authoritarian and abusive, rather than calm, rational, and informed. It is, and was, impossible for he non-genius son to accept IQ information without taking it personally, and becoming resentful.
    The female teachers who administer the IQ tests are portrayed as callous and out-of-touch, even though they CORRECTLY explain the scientific consensus on IQ by stating that you can't raise your IQ score more than about ten points. Like before, it was impossible for the non-genius son to hear this IQ information without taking it personally, and becoming resentful.
    The non-genius (older) son is presented as the hero of the story for BOTH refusing to open the envelope AND learning to forgive his abusive father.
    However, whenever an abusive father exists, the most logical conclusion is that he abused all of his children in some way. So if the non-genius (older) child is a victim of his father's abuse then so is his younger, genius brother!
    There is no heroism in rejecting valid scientific conclusions about IQ, especially when you lose empathy for your younger brother. The older brother's resentment prevents him from saying things like, "My little brother was so young and vulnerable when my father started abusing him. It was my job, as an older brother, to protect him - but I was too focused on my own pain to even try." Or, "I cannot undo my past failures with my younger brother, but I can make an effort to understand his side of the story WITHOUT judging him, so he can hopefully stop being depressed and find love."
    Still, if the story was written to highlight how normal-intellect people come to resent intellectually smarter people, then it did a really good job.

      Hi David, you really did a great job analyzing the video. Thank you for sharing this. Yes, it is a very complex and emotional subject. And for once, as kind of an experiment, we tried to show the emotional side of it too, and not only the factual one.
      I wasn´t always sure we did the right thing by bringing in the emotional side, but after I read your comment I am very glad we did. It´s great to see how it triggers reflection and discussion since this is the only tool we have to deal with facts. Facts are always seen through our personal eyes. An open discussion is an opportunity to get a glimpse of something else. Thank you so much!

      Second Birth this video was heavily centered on the older’s brother point of view, and to some it may even seem that the message of the story is that smart people will suffer in different ways that will make up for their blessing in the form of high intelligence. Edit: for all you people who are so concerned with whether or not it's true, does it really matter? People lie all the time and you have a 50-50 chance of guessing it. Sure, let's just say it's fake and get over with it if that makes you so happy. The point about stories and things in general is to learn things and you're supposed to take this story as a note to not let certain things stop you from being happy, especially if it's not major. Why do you care so much on whether or not it's true? Even stories that are "based on a true story" have exaggerations.

      Bro, he's not saying us "don't measure your IQs!".
      I learn a little more about the concept of inteligence, the way that it's measured, about what it implies (and what it doesn't) and, much more important, that the IQ is not related with our happiness at all.
      So nobody should be afraid to do some IQ test, cause the results will not determine your future.
      Edit: When you simplify an idea so much, at a certain point you change it. So you can't summarize the full video in "the IQ doesn't matter" (well you can, but is a wrong idea).

      I think measuring IQ is important but whether you can accept you inborn gifts is another matter. The benefits of measuring one's IQ include choosing one's career, have an idea of one's social capability, create more receptive environments for our children.
      Let's say you have an IQ of 90. You have a low chance of attending college so it's better that you prepare yourself for work. Let's say you have an IQ of 140. You may need help with socialising, and there should be proper channels for you to do so.
      Research like this shows that hey, I'm not a genius, but I'm like 50% of the population, or vice versa. It also shows how much your opinion may weigh against others, and how incapable most are in mentally challenging decisions. It destroys the belief that everyone can be a genius, and proper action must be taken to have us fully accept our abilities, and fully use them

I imagine it made them look bad but I had one teacher in particular in the 8th grade take me aside and chew me out for my grades (which, while not tops in the class, were above average) forgetting that I was new to the school and was trying to figure out how to fit in. For my own kids, I've always explained that IQ isn't a measure of what you know but how adept you are at putting logical conclusions together with the info you have. It's more like mental gymnastics than a proof of knowledge. Insofar as school goes, hard work will ALWAYS win out over natural intelligence if that intellect is married to slack work habits.

      If your friends don't value you for who you are they are the bad ones and you don't need the company of such people anyways so don't worry mate! It is always difficult to find genuine friends. Even the people you see being friendly might just be staying together to increase their reputation that they are friends with someone smart. These friendships break the moment they discover the other person has nothing to offer them. I am sure you will find great friends in life who will value you for who you are instead of for grades(which usually do not measure intelligence at all and often measures the ability to mug up). So most likely you are a good student and the way the tests are designed is bad. Can u please explain how to find the answer of 1st questions

    • @theophiljed
      @theophiljed 3 года назад +13

      Hi @@vishalkalotra7631
      So to find the volume of any cuboid, you have to apply the formula length × breadth × height.
      V = l×b×h.
      In other words,
      l × b × h = V
      In this case we have the volume, length and breadth but no height.
      Thus, following the formula:
      l × b × h = 64
      8 × 4 × h = 64
      32 × h = 64
      h = 64 ÷ 32
      h = 2
      Therefore, h = 2
      Or
      8 × 4 × h = 64
      h = 64 ÷ 8 ÷ 4
      Let's work it in order
      h = (64 ÷ 8) ÷ 4
      h = 8 ÷ 4
      h = 2
      To cross-check our answer, we can multiply the three factors, and if we get 64, we're right, otherwise there's an error.
      So now let's try
      8 × 4 × 2 =
      😃😃😃🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍

      If you consider the whole story, the reasoning is pretty strong. The majority of his life has his father boasting about IQ making him feel inferior for not reaching the quota his brother did.
      Him not opening the envelope signified his defiance to not be a slave to it. To not be bound by a number because of an exam. Because he started to believe in himself to be more than just a number his father would've given him.
      What would knowing your IQ ever did for you? Make you realize your smarter or dumber than everyone else.
      The same variable can apply to strength. You can be weaker or stronger than the general average. Although you can work your ass off to make yourself stronger than possible you'll never surpass the guy with good genetics.
      It all boils down to talent. No matter how good you are, someone will always be better than you.
      Not wanting to know your IQ is just like not wanting to bother being in a competition. Everyone is good at something. Beating yourself up by thinking your dumb would only limit your opportunities.

    I think that it doesn't matter if you are gifted or not, what really matters is to know what you really want, how can you live and manage yourself in the world to be happy, and not caring about the labels society gives nor let others decide about your life (as long as you respect others of course).
    One thing is to have talent, high IQ or a high capacity at something, but another thing is how it is nurtured and how are you developing in other areas different from your speciality.
    What the elder son did was more important: he though for himself and outgrew his father, something that many outgrown adults haven't overcome yet, still caring for their parents' opinion. However, it is still not late as long as one is still living.

    When I was in the 1st grade I had difficulty reading. To the point where my teacher actually called me stupid in a parent teacher conference. A series of events led me to getting an iq test and good news I’m not stupid, I had an iq of around 107. But it was explained to me that there are two different skills they test for. In simple terms a reading and math/logic section. In the math/logic I had an iq of around 132, but in the reading it was something like 86. I was also diagnosed with dyslexia. Luckily, I had parents and teachers that helped me and pushed me. Idk if I would have ended up where I am if she didn’t call me stupid, or if my parents just blamed her teaching and said nothing was wrong. I eventually developed reading techniques and with hard work I excelled through grade and high school and graduated with a BS in material science and engineering.

      Well the IQ matters, for survival. Because of the evolution theory we can understand how IQ matter in the face of survival. Because you are so much smarter and better at solving problems you can also survive with debilitating chronic and or acute illnesses, either mental and or physical. But in today's society it might not work out being smart, and being able to solve problems, because today you have to go to work everyday to stay in a job and you have to be consistent everyday with everything. Well what if you're sick half the time, can't sustain a job or social relations because of the illnesses your genes has carried with them on top of the high IQ, your IQ might work against you instead of being a benefit. Having only high IQ might have worked to survive up to this point but now you need to stay healthy (never be sick), look good and be smart to do well in any kind of work, and most people that have high IQ has some kind of mental or physical illness that they struggle with on a daily basis impairing them from being able to achieve the job that fits their intelligence making them depressed and self destructive because of their unhappiness with their lives

      I don't think the intent here was to smear much. Maybe appeal to the satisfying, popular (and true) notion that IQ does not correlate with happiness, and that you can have a good life regardless of your IQ. That's quite a good endeavor. Not to downplay the importance of IQ in other areas mentioned at the beginning of the video, which are factually correct.
      Aside from the alleged new assessment with empirical support that the video's subject took in school (will have to read the research on that one), the video did a satisfying enough job in painting a picture of IQ and it's relevance to our happiness. At least in the 11 minutes it had. This is obviously not a comprehensive video. There's state-of-the-art books summarizing the whole of the field for that, and even those can be unexhaustive.

    I think the answer may be 256 for #5 because the distance between each numbers square root increases by 2 each time. So the distance starts off as 3 then 5 then 7 then 9 and finally 11. And the missing number is after 81 so we would take the square root of 81 (9) and add 2; then the next number after 9 is separated by a distance of 7 so the next number in the sequence is 16. After that all we would do is square 16 (16^2) and I think that’s the answer. But I may of missed something so just in case I’m sorry in advance👍

      1. We know the length of the package, but since tests like these seem to rely on trick questions a lot, the box is larger than the package. Therefore, we don't know.
      2. Theres overlap between group a and b, and between b and c. This does not guarantee an overlap between b and c. The answer is no.
      3. This should be 4 but I feel like theres a trick.
      4. Art is on the wall. Cups are on the cupboard.

      Digaddog For the first question, the answer is 2. It gives the length, width, and volume of the box, so you take 4 and 8 to multiply them which gives 32. The volume of an object is length times width times height, and since we have length and width equating to 32, the height must be 2 since 32x2=64

    IQ represents the part of our intelligence that can be measured quite reliably. During our research, we came upon very different opinions on this matter. Some of them very controversial. We aim to be as neutral as possible and only to present the facts.
    We decided to try a new first-person format, what we call “a story based on scientific research”. Instead of presenting facts or studies we embedded all information into a first-person narrative. We think that this could lead to an increased retention rate and hence improved the learning experience.

    Having a low IQ is an unfortunate sign that one will be limited in what they accomplish in life. This is a hard reality that many try to refute, because while IQ is just a number, it represents genuine raw mental performance that translates into real world capabilities. When it comes to visualizing concepts in computer programming, you need a decently high IQ to wrap your head around the unique concepts faced when writing code as efficiently as possible and managing computer resources in order to run and troubleshoot your code.
    With that said, IQ and the mental performance it represents doesn’t predestine where you’ll end up in life. There are tons of high IQ individuals out there that have ended up as serial killers or have toiled away at research that doesn’t accomplish anything significant. You can have an average IQ and still do SO MUCH good for the world, to the point where your name could wind up in the history books. Figures like Jesus Christ, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Gandhi, etc. didn’t do anything that required a high amount of intelligence, even if they did possess it. They merely had the courage to do something no one else was willing to do, despite being capable. You don’t need a high IQ to refuse to give up your bus seat. You don’t need a high IQ to understand the power of non-violent protests. Sometimes you just need the initiative to do something that no one else was willing, but capable, of doing in order to be a hero…

      Paul-Napoléon Calland yeah but why expose your brother like that. If he really did suffer from depression I doubt he would like his brother outing him to the whole internet. I’m not saying he’s factually incorrect, he’s just morally wrong for that

    • @NapoleonCalland
      @NapoleonCalland 4 года назад

      @@BenjiM514 I can see your point. If he lives in a country like the USA, where your insurance can cost more if they know you suffer from depression, it's easy to understand why his brother might not want people to know. I suspect that names have been changed to protect privacy, and that they're deliberately "vague" about some of the details for the same reason. Personally, I was looking more at the moral of the story, because he's warning people against assuming that a high IQ means you'll have easy success (something that actually tends to lead to "imposter syndrome" in "gifted" people), so I read "dissing" more as interpreting his mentioning his brother's struggles as him taking potshots out of jealousy, and so missing the point he was trying to make.
      Looked at the way you put it, it does raise issues that arise when commenting on someone else's life. For all we know, having only the narrator's point of view, his brother could just as easily be gay or asexual, or doesn't want marriage and children like his older sibling, rather than not having "found the right woman yet". And in contrast to the conclusions we might draw too hastily (the absence-of-relationship-and-children comment just before the "outing" concerning his depression could be a non sequitur), his depression is probably due, at least in part, to a lifetime of trying to live up to other people's expectations, rather than taking care of his own needs. All of which, as I'm sure you agree, it's his business to disclose or not, particularly on the Internet.

    I loved this video. Thank you :)
    However I don't fully believe that a damage is permanent but it can be however worked on, it's all about reading habits put in by parents, what you sow is what you reap so if the efforts that parents put in a weak child they all will reap the benefits in the future perhaps not up to MIT or PhD though it is possible but at least can very much survive.

      The moral of the story is that he was able to let go of his resentment of his little brother for being more intelligent than him. Because if you dwell on things you cannot change, you become more and more miserable.

      If tat really happens, it goes to show iq test is not important (as the author proudly claims) or the test is constructed poorly and has poor validity. This is shown from his poor attitude esp towards his brother. Real high IQ people are never insecure of their intelligience and wont compare by putting down others

    Unpopular opinion: I believe that intelligence is the most important of all traits or gifts someone could benefite from, because, wisely used, it can help you achieve anything that any other gift would proporcionate to whomever has it.
    Example of a personal story: I had problems socialicing with people of my age when in highschool, specially with girls; so, I one day decided to treat the issue as a simple math, chess or any other rational area problem, where my intelligence would lead me to an acceptable result, if not an optimal one (after many failings, which is inherent to any of the above subjects), well, I studied how people joined themshelves into groups with others and what made them desireble to others. Observation, reflection and some reading helped me get eventually through, and, believe or not, after some sophist-tication of my speech (linguistic and non linguistic), I hipocritically managed to give people what they wanted in the right doses, and had contacts and girls to hook up with. Eventually, bonds naturally developed like in cheesy hollywood like movies where the main character falls in love with the girl she only had to fuck with for a bet or something, et voil ah! hehe
    I'm pretty intelligence, have trouble solving some problems of my life, but I'm tremendously happy of having this intelligence on which I can rely most of the time.
    Cheers, dudes!

      Btw he answer to the 2nd question is no.
      1. Some 'A' are also 'B'.
      2. Some 'B' are also 'C'.
      Are some 'A' also 'C' with certainty? No, as it's entirely possible with the given information and the overall context that there are 'A+B' things, 'B+C' things, 'A' / 'B' / 'C' things only, as it's possible to not have 'A+C' things. Incidentally, if 'A+C' things do not exist in the given context, it's impossible that 'A+B+C' things exist. I'd love to represent it graphically but youtube comments are not made for that...

    Interesting. I've delved deep in to philosophy recently and it's amazing how many proverbs we say to one another in our daily lives. "Grass is always greener on the other side" and "Wisdom in your years"/"Respect your elders"
    Theres a good reason why these things are said and that is because the more time you spend on this earth listening rather than speaking the better off you will usually be. Anxiety is the ailment of the intelligent. and so is depression. There is something you are not getting because you can't relate to "the normal" person. I choose to be thankful but hate filled towards myself for these reasons. Some call it ADHD I call it the, spice of life. There is no defined path and everybody absolutely has their place on this earth. But the person that chooses to put themself outside of their comfort zone is most probably the one that needs the most support. They however will also be the unsung heros of the world. And for this, I love you. Hang in there, good luck and remember that you have a place here to.
    We are all floating around on this rock in the vast void of space trying our hardest to live amongst eachother. It very likely has no meaning. But that doesn't mean you can't make an impact. Nihilism is a philosphical answer to this but your perspective on things is the problem. For myself Nihilism stems from the absence of self love. Get to know yourself but getting to know as many people as you possibly can.
    God I hate and love it all at the same time. I wish I could live and die sometimes just to know the answers. It is a plague of the human condition.
