Also, I heard that most people can live a life without romance and can still be happy. But most of the time, if someone doesn't have any platonic friends in their life, it can effect them really bad mentally; much worse than living a life without a romantic partner. In today's world, less people are dating and getting married now, and they seem to be more happy being single rather than being in romantic relationship with someone. Also, You're going to have a much deeper spoken understanding and connection with your best friend than you are with a romantic partner or spouse. So those are other reasons why romantic love isn't real or special, while platonic love is.
And also, it seems that fathers usually hate it whenever their daughter gets a boyfriend (even if the boyfriend is a good guy), and it seems that they often hate the idea of their daughter dating, and many fathers seem against the idea of their daughters dating. There are even shirts made for daughters that say "I'M NOT ALLOWED TO EVER DATE" and shirts made for fathers that say "DADS AGAINST DAUGHTERS DATING". Brothers also tend to act the same way that fathers do whenever their sister gets a boyfriend (even if the boyfriend is a good guy). It seems brothers (like fathers) hate the idea of their sisters dating. So those could also be other reasons why the concept of romantic relationships isn't a good thing because of how protective fathers and brothers tend to be whenever their daughter or sister dates someone.

Aero, great question! My research shows that attraction is complex. We are attracted to both opposites and familiar at the same time. For example, someone needs to be familiar enough that we feel comfortable, yet at the same time we are naturally repulsed when someone is too close - such as the MHC molecules. Those factors can cause finding a suitable match challenging.

g0phuckyourself why thank my fellow moron with an odd name... Any animal that displays such behavior is due to hormonal changes and or pheromone of the opposite sex detected on the same sex...
Stine Newton What's completely unnatural is to be that stupid. If you want to revert to the era of living in the "jungle male n female", as you put it, then by all means, go live in the Amazon, away from technology, cities, vehicles, and everything else outside of the realm of the perfectly ideal "jungle male n female". Attraction is not simply limited to primal instincts. Numerous factors, including societal and cultural upbringings, personality, interests, intelligence, success, feelings of security, and much more play into attraction. You act like people just go around fucking each other and hope that a baby eventually pops out and homosexual individuals expect the same thing to happen.
great presentation on the physiological processes of attraction. can't help but nod to every aspect of the senses' reactions. but of course, it's more than physiological, it's also psychological! :)
"Try to remember that your entire body is playing matchmaker" - it's nice to know that my brain isn't the only responsible for my attraction to self destruction.
It would be interesting to analyze how a bisexual mind reacts to the stimuli. I like certain types of women and certain types of men, so how does it work?.
As an asexual myself,I have no desire to engage in sexual intercourse, to me it is no different than sneezing or your leg jerking when something hits your knee
Oh, I've been wondering for some time, how do you know you're asexual? Do you feel nothing when your partner touches or kisses you, no emotion, no physical desire at all? What is the romantic world like to asexuals?
pissicutza09 While im not asexual i feel it might be worth noting that Romantics and sexuality are two separate things, you can be romantically attracted to someone without wanting sex. Physical contact of any sort in a relationship can feel good for both parties and both may want it but asexuality just means that the person may not feel the sexual desire for other people. Or you can be aromantic asexual where you simply wish for companionship. its a spectrum.
Garrsus So then what do you call a person who is attracted to the opposite sex, and does want Physical Contact, but not to the point of sexual intercourse? Is it just called being abstinent forever?
Dunno about the rest of ya'll, but as an advocate of the sciences, I think this explanation amplifies the romance rather than making it seem cold or stoic
***** No it isn't. Love is a deep affection that you do manually. You only choose to show affection to someone. This is why a lot of people break up or divorce as their view on love is warped & think it is only attraction which can only last so long. Once that attraction is over you need to show affection that will keep a bond between both of you which you YOURSELF need to do. Love isn't automatic. Only you choose to love. This is the same with emotions which are mostly manual but sometimes automatic. But you need to choose to stay happy. But that is happiness. So stay happy & show affection to everyone (^-^)
I remember when I walked with this girl I was really attracted to it felt like the world was fading out around us and it was just us two.. now I know why lol. I wonder whether it's a mutual feeling, like when you have that tunnel vision the other person does so too. I remember when we talked she seemed to completely ignore her friends around us.
I can only imagine what the people facing that study were told. "Okay, I need you to smell this shirt really well, and then spit in this vial. Wait, where are you going? Of course this is a real test!"
Before I said something akin to "Theres nothing wrong with homosexuality or bisexuality but its not normal" I edited it when my understanding of the topic changed. "Normality" is not the majority. I 100% understand your point here, and I think I unintentionally spread a kind of homophobia thats popular on the internet.
MsDinoGal The title of the video is the science of attraction. Not the science of reproductive attraction, nor any other particular sort of attraction.
They are talking about general sexual attraction, correlated with the instinct to reproduce and continue the genetic line; not love, an intimate emotional connection with another person.
but there is still a sexual attraction in distance relationships right? so, any kind of sexual attraction like for example your favorite idol who you've never met but boy u wanna get under the sheets
well that's illusion. although your sense of sight and sound is obviously agreeing and you very well may be attracted to the person irl if you knew them, since your body has no other way of percieving the person then your mind eventually just focuses on that specifically without having to sense anything else. so long story short, if you met the said person irl you may not be attracted to them at all or you may want to fuck them right then and there because you're so attracted to them that any other qualities you couldnt experience before are making your body act like it's in overdrive
then the person is delusional and fell in love with the image of the person he/she has of the other. since your dp's an anime character, i'm thinking this might be a personal question.
As an asexual, who wouldn't know attraction if it hit me in the face, this video was very helpful. Now I'll know if attraction ever hits me in the face!
the experiment with the hot and iced coffee can't be cited as evidence. as psychology students we actually tried replicating it in fourth semester and as other replications before us, found no connection between physical warmth and perception of strangers. The original set up wasn't clearly described too, so who knows what they measured
So if someone is asexual, does that mean that their body just doesn't run these tests, or do they just not get attracted by any of these factors, plain and simple? And as for those who fall in love mainly based on personality, what is the science behind that? o:
+LilyToon Asexual people either don't run these tests or don't respond to them. It varies from person to person, depending on their genetics and other conditions. As for those who fall in love based on personality, they still very much run these tests---this science is merely for sexual and reproductive purposes---but human beings (as well as certain animals) also run additional tests to determine if the person/being they're interacting with is a candidate for a lifelong mate. It takes a while to run these tests, and they take place on both the cognitive and subconscious level, which is why it's generally a good idea to have been seeing a person for a while before considering dropping the question.
Aesuxals (most) still feel love and aesthic atraction (someone lookin hot), however they simply have no disire to have intercourse. That is why ace dating sites exist.
Myself being an Asexual i can say i do run these test but when it comes down to the sex part it's just like simply no attraction at all, also it depends on the person too.
Mutual attraction. The undeniable chemistry you have between your lover. It ignites the fire. It sparks conversation. It just happens to everyone. 100%
This is really interesting, but I'd love to know why some people find different people attractive (I like someone someone that most of my friends think is unattractive), and also how this all works for lgbt individuals.
I actually really like this. It's frustrating being attracted to someone you know you don't actually like and so it's like now I understand that a little more and don't feel as bad about it. Still sucks sometimes but my brain is just doing it's job I guess.
Formants are acoustical properties of the voice. They are certain frequencies (the scientific term for "pitch") that resonate with our vocal tract (the space between our mouth and voice box) when we speak. You could say that they are certain frequencies that get a boost in intensity (i.e. volume) when we shape our mouths in different ways and our ability to detect them allows us to recognize different vowels. Look up spectrogram images of formants and you'll see them. The video is talking about a kind of speech that makes these formants space apart widely rather than cluster together. Does this help?
"My brain has run a thousand calculations a second, taking all my senses and crushing them into a formula, and it still says you're the right one for me." I'm not sure, my brain running math love still sounds pretty romantic to me
What about gay people? What are the factors that determine attraction? Is there anything else than in-link-with-reproduction, or something replacing it? And sometimes gay men act like women and gay women act like men, is it for attracting the other mate? Or does it have nothing to do with. Or act they this way because of another factor and are attracted to the same sex, because they are both attracted to the same sex. And in the heterosexual way, some men are attracted to more mannish women, as some women are attracted by more womanish men. Is attraction by more manish or womanish people has a conection with in-link-with-reproduction? or is it just a consequences of the normal type? or are these things distinct. What about the other sexualities? What about the asexuality? Are they attracted without wanting sex? All that I know about me, being a gay is that I prefer mannish smells, instead of womanish smells. Maybe it's the same factors, but as a gay man research a man, the no-possibility to reproduce with, is not a problem. Because there are alternative or it's not important anymore. And so what is kept is not the finality of reproducing, but the means that uses reproducing to find a partner. Too many questions!!!!!!! Please answer as many as possible!!! :D
***** Gay people respond to pheromones the same way a straight person of the opposite gender would. In layman terms, being gay is when your "matchmaking system" thinks it can reproduce with someone of the same gender. The way people act and their exact preferences are unrelated. I can't comment on asexuality.
Gerik Paull That's quite a good explaination. For asexuel people the problem is to know why they can fall in love and why they won't have sex at the same time. In the upper video, falling in love and have sex are pratically attached.
***** I guess there's three ways to look at it: a) Sexual attraction is only one of many components of love, asexual people just lack that one. b) What asexual people experience is more akin to how people would feel about their family or best friends rather than the romantic-find-someone-who-makes-good-babies love you and I experience. Option a is more politically correct, so let's go with that. :] The truth is we don't know shit about sexuality.
Has anyone kissed someone before they got to know them/were also attracted to their personality and not liked the kiss? But then when you got to know the person and you kissed again, you liked it? Sort of like how people say sex is better when you're emotionally involved. 'Cause I know you can lose attraction after the first kiss, but what if it was bad because there wasn't a connection there besides biological? I can't really articulate this well, but I'm interested in hearing others' experiences with this.
Finally someone gets the whole thing about how the heart has nothing to do with it it's actually "follow your brain not your heart cause it's not really gonna do much"
What's completely missing from this type of discussion as per usual is the lack of mention of the emotional energy centers that we, as emotional beings, all possess. Anyone who's ever had a literal heartfelt moment can attest to the existence of these strong generators of emotional energy. Yes, that's right, root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, crown. There's a reason more and more people are acknowledging the existence of these centers, and it's primarily due to the fact that THEY CAN BE FELT. Meanwhile science keeps trying to tell us there's no mystery in the machine, and all the while those who can *see* just laugh and laugh at their disposition of utmost seriousness.
O! 🤯That is what happen to me N couldn’t Figure out what was happening to me. I went to a party not looking cause I’m happily married 35 years. Turn my head saw this stringer, a man N don’t know what happen my whole body gave this Pleasant pain of attraction NEVER experience that before N I’m 70. The attraction was so strong I couldn’t keep eye contact because it hurt. Is that silly? N when we did talked the feeling was normal but I SAW no one else in the room. 😂 when I thought of that day the feeling was still there. I am so happy I came across your video it explains so much.
Well thanks for tell me about the first kiss thing, you gave me a whole new thing to be anxious about. ;) Also, does your body really know what's best for you? "Home is where the heart lies, but if the heart lies Where is home, is where the heart lies, but where is home?" - Fish
Great video, but I agree with ilovekitkats, this video solely focuses on heterosexual attraction. It would be very interesting to see a video showing how same sex couples perceive tone of voice, and how their physiological impulses changed dependent upon scent and other senses.
I’ve been trying to find what this is. For as long as i can remember i’ve only ever been attracted to people who have showed me attention or expressed that they have liked me in the first place, so my ‘type’ in physicality is all over the place because it all starts with them expressing an interest in me. idk it’s weird, and kind of sounds like i may be full of myself but i’m not at all i just dk why i’m like this.
Looking at it that way kinda sucks and doesn't feel right. Yeah attraction is natural but I'd hate to view a natural, genuine, and emotional reaction as trickery
This is unique and engaging. A book I read with similar scope was also one-of-a-kind. "The Art of Meaningful Relationships in the 21st Century" by Leo Flint
My first impression was a very strong one,’ repeated the prince. ‘When they took me away from Russia, I remember I passed through many German towns and looked out of the windows, but did not trouble so much as to ask questions about them. This was after a long series of fits. I always used to fall into a sort of torpid condition after such a series, and lost my memory almost entirely; and though I was not altogether without reason at such times, yet I had no logical power of thought. This would continue for three or four days, and then I would recover myself again. I remember my melancholy was intolerable; I felt inclined to cry; I sat and wondered and wondered uncomfortably; the consciousness that everything was strange weighed terribly upon me; I could understand that it was all foreign and strange. I recollect I awoke from this state for the first time at Basle, one evening; the bray of a donkey aroused me, a donkey in the town market. I saw the donkey and was extremely pleased with it, and from that moment my head seemed to clear.’ ‘A donkey? How strange! Yet it is not strange. Anyone of us might fall in love with a donkey! It happened in mythological times,’ said Madame Epanchin, looking wrathfully at her daughters, who had begun to laugh. ‘Go on, prince.’ ‘Since that evening I have been specially fond of donkeys. I began to ask questions about them, for I had never seen one before; and I at once came to the conclusion that this must be one of the most useful of animals-strong, willing, patient, cheap; and, thanks to this donkey, I began to like the whole country I was travelling through; and my melancholy passed away.’⁴

g0phuckyourself why thank my fellow moron with an odd name...
Stine Newton
Where and how did I exactly did I "learn" my homosexual behavior, when I grew up surrounded my heterosexuals?

+pcakes It's great. Sometimes it lookes kinda creepy though ._.
+Guillermo Ortíz Im pretty sure :39 is the no where man
great presentation on the physiological processes of attraction. can't help but nod to every aspect of the senses' reactions. but of course, it's more than physiological, it's also psychological! :)
"Try to remember that your entire body is playing matchmaker" - it's nice to know that my brain isn't the only responsible for my attraction to self destruction.
I'm glad that it was mentioned at the beginning that attraction starts with the eyes and that's cultural/socially determined.
It would be interesting to analyze how a bisexual mind reacts to the stimuli. I like certain types of women and certain types of men, so how does it work?.
more or less what i was thinking, not to mention what does this say about Asexual people?
Is it just called being abstinent forever?
i love the animation style of his video. reminds me of schoolhouse rock or suburban harmony
Rinoa Super-Genius the yellow submarine from the Beatles
Pavo gaming/Tru moo 47 I wasn’t the only one who thought that!
looks like yellow submarine
Dunno about the rest of ya'll, but as an advocate of the sciences, I think this explanation amplifies the romance rather than making it seem cold or stoic
Attraction is not love.
***** Well of course it is something which you have to train. As I have as well. (^^)
Agreed, Sophie.
Attraction is the starting point. It doesn't have to be *physical* attraction, though.
@@daPvtawhat’s the psychology behind physical attraction ? It can be controlled ?

I remember when I walked with this girl I was really attracted to it felt like the world was fading out around us and it was just us two.. now I know why lol. I wonder whether it's a mutual feeling, like when you have that tunnel vision the other person does so too. I remember when we talked she seemed to completely ignore her friends around us.
I can only imagine what the people facing that study were told.
"Okay, I need you to smell this shirt really well, and then spit in this vial. Wait, where are you going? Of course this is a real test!"
I've seen it in bbc program 🤣they were actually awkward looking
Appreciate the vid but I am very conscious of the heteronormativity at play here.
Hetero is normal, in the sense that it's statistically dominant. So what's the problem?
This is about the science of reproductive attraction. That requires a male and a female.
Before I said something akin to "Theres nothing wrong with homosexuality or bisexuality but its not normal"
I edited it when my understanding of the topic changed. "Normality" is not the majority.
I 100% understand your point here, and I think I unintentionally spread a kind of homophobia thats popular on the internet.
In the end, everybody likes what they like.
MsDinoGal The title of the video is the science of attraction. Not the science of reproductive attraction, nor any other particular sort of attraction.
This is by far the most interesting TED-Ed video that I had watched.

how do you explain long distance relationship, have never met but they fall in love?
JARED you are judging someone from a profile pic that never bothered to change it in years

***** Thank you for the answer! It definitely answered my questions very well!
Aesuxals (most) still feel love and aesthic atraction (someone lookin hot), however they simply have no disire to have intercourse. That is why ace dating sites exist.
+LilyToon Fall in love =/= attraction
Myself being an Asexual i can say i do run these test but when it comes down to the sex part it's just like simply no attraction at all, also it depends on the person too.
Loved this! So informative
You got it Zoey Arielle!

What does it means by wide formant spacing voice?
slow?
idk tho...
it means, pretending to have mental blocks and stuttering often when speaking to guys. try it!
JARED is it something like marilyn monroe? 😂
why grammar is?
Formants are acoustical properties of the voice. They are certain frequencies (the scientific term for "pitch") that resonate with our vocal tract (the space between our mouth and voice box) when we speak. You could say that they are certain frequencies that get a boost in intensity (i.e. volume) when we shape our mouths in different ways and our ability to detect them allows us to recognize different vowels. Look up spectrogram images of formants and you'll see them. The video is talking about a kind of speech that makes these formants space apart widely rather than cluster together. Does this help?
I double dare you to smell my t-shirt 😂😂😂
I don't find this idea cold .
Knowing this makes me feel that emotions are so real and practical ....
The person who spoke in this ted talk has a very pleasing voice to listen to
I'm going to wear the same shirt 3 days in a row now! Thanks for the tip!!!
that artwork though, what the heck...I don't know why but it made me think of hippies
I swear I'm slowly turning into a sociopath
Maybe it's good that we are more "cold and scientific" in our understanding of love than romantic - placing unrealistic expectations on one person
"My brain has run a thousand calculations a second, taking all my senses and crushing them into a formula, and it still says you're the right one for me." I'm not sure, my brain running math love still sounds pretty romantic to me
if someone told me that I would at least consider them lmao
that sounds extremely poetic, specially if they like science and this kinda stuff

***** I guess there's three ways to look at it:
a) Sexual attraction is only one of many components of love, asexual people just lack that one.
b) What asexual people experience is more akin to how people would feel about their family or best friends rather than the romantic-find-someone-who-makes-good-babies love you and I experience.
Option a is more politically correct, so let's go with that. :] The truth is we don't know shit about sexuality.
Let's ask one! XD
***** But they're hard to find :[
Next thing I know I'm down a rabbit hole watching 30 of these in a row
Love the 70's vibe! Great video as usual :)
Never let anyone Limit you. Because You're Awesome!
Thank you!
What about when you first don't like someone but then later start to? Does it still work the same way?
3:39 Lol I wanted to press "space" to split and eat all those blobs
Lol
I find this to be just as poetic as the "warm sensation in the heart" explanation of love.
Finally someone gets the whole thing about how the heart has nothing to do with it it's actually "follow your brain not your heart cause it's not really gonna do much"
It gave the clarity and real knowledge of attraction instead of mere philosophies.
With help of this video,I would be able to handle attraction
Okay I only feel slightly less terrible that I lost attraction to someone I kissed.
Zenyatter x
And also karmic bonds. Etc. Thanks for the comment!
0:56 except for some reason when I see my crush my brain says “nope nope avoid at all costs”
I much prefer this explanation of love and attraction, I don’t think it’s cold, it’s learning the mechanics behind it.
The cold/hot coffee study was shown to be invalid as is failed to replicate. Holding hot or cold coffee does not influence how someone perceives you.
"right for you" meaning, do they rank high enough, are they the highest possible rank you can achieve
Well thanks for tell me about the first kiss thing, you gave me a whole new thing to be anxious about. ;)
Also, does your body really know what's best for you?

The Best narrator ever
Shit im scared now
Great video, but I agree with ilovekitkats, this video solely focuses on heterosexual attraction. It would be very interesting to see a video showing how same sex couples perceive tone of voice, and how their physiological impulses changed dependent upon scent and other senses.
I didn't realize TED existed back in the 70's, lol ;)
i think that Ted-Ed is a good channel to learn English. I am a Vietnamese so I knew it
What is the First Kiss ? A rich and complex exchange of tactile and chemical cues. (Knowledge is power!)
okay well now i'm going to be even MORE stressed when i have my first kiss
I’ve been trying to find what this is. For as long as i can remember i’ve only ever been attracted to people who have showed me attention or expressed that they have liked me in the first place, so my ‘type’ in physicality is all over the place because it all starts with them expressing an interest in me. idk it’s weird, and kind of sounds like i may be full of myself but i’m not at all i just dk why i’m like this.
it is funny how our body actually tricks us, when we think we are the ones who decide^^
