My husband is from Toronto (sorry, Toranto)... we've been there several times together over the last nearly decade, I know his opinions about it very well... but is that going to stop me asking him how he finds toranto the next time he's quietly trying to watch something and I decide it counts as a silence? I tried that complimentary cold read technique at a work event - "What do you like to do for fun" and "You look like you're pretty into fitness" after introducing myself. The woman (a complete stranger) thought I was flirting with her and I ended up in a disciplinary with HR for inappropriate behaviour. Be very careful who you use this advice with.
"It seems you were hitting on that female coworker. What are your thoughts?" "Don't worry, I have learned the lesson. So you all look like you enjoy eating a lot?"
@@danny.ray101 Not really. I had been talking shop all day and was looking for common ground. If it hadn't been a networking event and I wasn't already supposed to chat to people I didn't know I might have seen it that way.
@JetBlackJester I think that talking about fitness to a woman brings up different connotations than if you talk about fitness to a man, quite simply because a man talking to a woman about her body is considered flirting or at least borderline usually, while guys are not as sensitive on the topic. That said, at a setting where people are supposed to interact, and given the information I am aware of, I feel like she could have cut you a little more slack and tried to guage your intentions before coming to a conclusion. In summary, I believe all parties involved could have done better, its just a little unfortunate that the learning experience for you was rather awkward.
I tried to make my crush laugh by extra saying “Why” “Toronto” etc. But she just watched me awkwardly. Then I remembered that not everyone knows this comment section.
One of the best feelings is when you're so close to someone that even the awkward silences aren't awkward anymore and you're just enjoying one another's company.

I'd like to believe a couple out there having a casual conversation. When they got to the silence part, they recalled this video vividly and knew every tip from it. It'd be so funny for them to start talking about Toronto or "that thing reminds me off" and slowly realise that they've both seen the video. From there on, they watched the video again together just to laugh their asses off reading the comment section.
You know the word future reminds me of a state that is my destiny to behold my actions a period of time following the moment of speaking or writing; time regarded as still to come.
The more I see videos like this, the more I understand that I just have anxiety. I follow this script, I don't do anything incredibly weird. But my mind puts everything under a microscope. And sometimes I just got to accept that I just don't vibe with everyone. Some conversations just arent going to be great.
So true, I used to deal with really bad social anxiety and like you I would second guess everything I said or did and felt disappointed when I didn’t vibe with someone or the convo was awkward (which was most of the time lol). Realising that you won’t get along with everybody, just because we’re all different, is so freeing.
The only thing I‘d add to this video is a statement that if none of these methods work, it‘s time to abandon the conversation and talk to someone else.
I have learned to enjoy the awkwardness. If you don't feel like saying anything else, just smile, stare and notice the other person becoming uncomfortable. They'll leave you alone soon enough.
Could you make a video on how to end conversations effectively without being rude? Especially if the other person is too chatty and can't understand regular cues that you need to leave for another matter?
pkmaniac what I do and works fine, is to answer their last question, start leading the conversation and show interest in what the other person says, then without letting them say anything else I just say something like "so yeah that's what I think (or something like this depending on the situation), anyway it was nice talking to you, gotta go now". Basically, interrupt yourself to end the conversation, not the other person
Key to is start off the conversation with a disclaimers saying "I'm on my way to ____" or "I've got some work/something to do" to let them know that you could leave at any moment with good reason. Then, when you actually want to end the convo, interrupt yourself after you finish your thought and mention that you have to leave for ______ that you already mentioned at the start. It makes exiting the convo a lot less awkward.

I've come to learn a bit about this, and it took me a while to understand that it's not only me in a conversation that is struggling, it's both sides, (or in a group, all sides). This made me less worried about the responsibility of the conversation failing falling on me.
Teacher: where’s your homework? Me: *takes deep breath whilst maintaining eye contact* Teacher: what are you doing? Me: so why did you decide to be a teacher? Teacher: excuse me? *awkward silence* Me: How do you like Toronto?
seeing that this video has so many views makes me feel less alone. we just all have some problems with social skills but hey, nothing that we can't overcome
I just like to ask completely random questions out of the blue. I don't mean stuff like "Where'd you get your shirt from?" or something. I mean questions like "Is soup a drink?" or "Do you pour cereal or milk first?" since those types of questions usually lead to a debate, or just an interesting conversation. Also yes, both of those questions were food related. Food is always a good conversation topic, since most everyone enjoys food (or at least has an opinion on it). Some other good questions to ask are hypotheticals. I like these since they're pretty interesting, and if you run out of them it's really easy to just make one up. Ex: "Would you rather fight 10 5 year olds or 2 20 year olds?" or "Would you eat a gallon of mayonnaise for 10,000 dollars?" You can also elaborate on the question, or change it slightly depending on their answer, like instead of "Would you eat a gallon of mayonnaise for 10,000 dollars?" it'd be "Would you eat a gallon of mayonnaise for 3.5 dollars?" Sorry for the long comment, and thanks to anyone who read all the way through! Hoped this helped!
My cousin always asks us these kinds of questions lol! Its usually very crazy so we roll our eyes each time he starts with a 'would u rather...' 🤣🤣 Questions like, 'would u rather, marry/date a person who is shockingly ugly, (he also includes some kind of abnormality, like he has unstoppable diarrhea) but he has the best personality (factually) and loves u dearly , or would u rather marry someone who is impossibly gorgeous and rich but has the shittiest personality.. This is tame actually, compared to some of his other ones 😂🤣🤣
Me: So do you like Toronto? Her: Yes, actually, I went there last year, it's beautiful Me: How do you like Toronto? Her: ... I like the landscape I guess? Me: Why? Her: Why what? Me: That reminds me of that time when I went to Toronto
As someone with Autism, I struggle with maintaining conversations and there’s tone of awkward silences. It’s mostly due to the only questions I can think of in the moment being closed ended ones. I’m starting a new job this week and I’m gonna try and use some of these tips to help me.
"how do you like Toronto" "I've never been there" "why?" "because I live in another country" "this reminds me of the time I didn't have anything to say"
Me: hi Her: hello Me: tell me your story Her: I was born in Switzerland... Me: so how do you like Toronto? Her: I said Switzerland Me: you said Switzerland? Her: yes Me: Why?
Her: Yeah my last five years were pretty rough. I lived in Toronto with my now ex-husband but he was really abusive and manipulative. When we finally divorced he also took my precious children. I don't like to be reminded of that time because I'm trying to move on. Me: Her: Me: So what's your story? How do you like Toronto? I'm sure you'd be great with kids!😀
My dad, who is really great at socializing, taught me one rule: Try asking your conversation partner questions about him/her. Not only will it lead to new conversation topics like they mentioned in the video, it also gives you time to think about how to follow up after they finish. As an introvert, this works greatly for me.
Ohh I got the same tip! He even used it on me without me realizing and after I finished talking he said “see” Stuck with me since then and as a shy introvert, has helped me a lot
Please gimme some more tips like this I really die during a conversation have nothing to ask or say and the conversation ends right there with awkward silence from both sides
Actually... that wouldn't be too bad a question. "How did you get an A?" That opens up lots of possibilities to start talking about studying, school, how he other one has felt in the past weeks, personal habits, things the other one is or isn't interested in, etc.
If one runs out of things to say, then that's perfectly ok. Just remain silent. Such is natural. Afterall, the person needs to get used to you when you're speaking and when you're not speaking to keep everything natural. There's a natural flow to everything. There's no need to force the conversation. If the conversation is forced, then it would appear that way too. As the saying goes, Silence is golden!
her: yeah i’ve been to toronto a few times me internally: finally someone who’s actually been there, ok don’t mess this up again. just say “how do you like toronto?” me externally: how do you why toronto. you seem good with kids. why? have plans any exciting for the fut- her: *frantically getting up to leave* me: evael t’nod esaelp !tiaw
Me: "as an introvert, I've had a lot of experience with awkward silence." Therapist: "and what have you learned?" Me: "How to weaponize it against my enemies." Therapist: ...... Me: .... "So how do you know Toronto?"
Never pressed like buttons for so long continuously, I'm loving this comment section! Been wondering simultaneously, how can these hilarious peeps be watching this video?
*at a bar* Me: you look like you come here often Her: What, I look like an alcoholic?? Me: what’s your story Her: I don’t have a drinking problem! Me: Tell me why
Idk why this is on my feed but for anyone that needed this video y’all just gotta go out and enjoy life. Don’t take things to serious joke around be funny be yourselves and quit worrying about the best thing to say in every situation just talk lmao. Love y’all god bless🙏
Why wouldn't it? it's straightforward advice that generally works if you try it. Those saying 'no it wont' likely haven't even given it a second thought.
Love Charlie’s videos, but as someone who talks to others for a living (as a therapist) I’ve always been taught to ask “what” instead of “why”...so in the example in the video “why did you get into consulting” would be “what made you get into consulting?” Why questions feel interrogative, what questions feel more curious. Food for thought.
True. All of the tips gradually sound like test questions you find in exams imo x') If I was put on the spot I would feel like being pressed to answer personal questions instead of sharing personal thoughts or experience
*Talking to a girl by her lonesome Me: "So how do you know each other?" Her: " Im here by myself." Me : "Why?" Her: "..." Me: "..." Me: "So how do you like Toronto?"
I *hate* it when I try to break the silence to cope with the awkwardness, but the other person just doesn’t want to “cooperate”. Like I wish people would just say if they are comfortable not talking, because I myself don’t want to talk if i could, but I don’t want to come across as an unfriendly person, y’know-
Mirroring is a powerful communication tool. I use it all the time and the amount of positive feedback from it is vast. It shows you're listening and they feel better that you are listening.

Have a date in an hour. I’m using this as a pick-up line for sure dude lmao
How to get friendzoned in just one interaction
@@R9naldoyeah 💀
My cousin always asks us these kinds of questions lol!
Its usually very crazy so we roll our eyes each time he starts with a 'would u rather...' 🤣🤣
Questions like, 'would u rather, marry/date a person who is shockingly ugly, (he also includes some kind of abnormality, like he has unstoppable diarrhea) but he has the best personality (factually) and loves u dearly , or would u rather marry someone who is impossibly gorgeous and rich but has the shittiest personality..
This is tame actually, compared to some of his other ones 😂🤣🤣

As someone with Autism, I struggle with maintaining conversations and there’s tone of awkward silences. It’s mostly due to the only questions I can think of in the moment being closed ended ones. I’m starting a new job this week and I’m gonna try and use some of these tips to help me.
I'd recommend gauging the tone of the comments section before implementing any of the suggestions from this video.

My dad, who is really great at socializing, taught me one rule:
Try asking your conversation partner questions about him/her. Not only will it lead to new conversation topics like they mentioned in the video, it also gives you time to think about how to follow up after they finish. As an introvert, this works greatly for me.

Actually... that wouldn't be too bad a question. "How did you get an A?" That opens up lots of possibilities to start talking about studying, school, how he other one has felt in the past weeks, personal habits, things the other one is or isn't interested in, etc.
This comment thread has me dying.
I had a friend who used to remain silent. He drove me nuts until one day I asked myself "why am I meeting this guy?" and the relationship was over.

Love Charlie’s videos, but as someone who talks to others for a living (as a therapist) I’ve always been taught to ask “what” instead of “why”...so in the example in the video “why did you get into consulting” would be “what made you get into consulting?”
