We’ve all been there - you’re in conversation, things are humming along nicely and then out of nowhere the awkward silence rears it’s head. At just that moment, your mind goes completely blank, you don’t know what to say and you can sense the other person’s eyes wandering as they look for someone else to talk to.
That scenario sucks so here are 5 tips to make sure you never run out of things to say in conversation

My dad, who is really great at socializing, taught me one rule:
Try asking your conversation partner questions about he/she. Not only will it lead to new conversation topics like they mentioned in the video, it also gives you time to think about how to follow up after they finish. As an introvert, this works greatly for me.

Holding a conversation is an entirely different skill set than being extremely intelligent or witty or even funny.

I always say, “you too” at the wrong times. Usually it’s at the end of a conversation. Like to someone working at a movie theater and they say, “enjoy the movie”, and I say, “you too”. Or when the doctor ends with, “make sure you take your medicine”, and I’m just like, yea, “you too”.

Imagine the doctor telling you to remember to take your medication and your just like, “yeah you too” as if they are crazy or something or you think they need help lol, it just sounds aggressive to say “you too” back to a doctor about taking medication lol
Btw if this ever happens, just laugh it off. Like seriously, sometimes embracing the fact you can't talk changes the mood from awkward to goofy.

I tried that complimentary cold read technique at a work event - "What do you like to do for fun" and "You look like you're pretty into fitness" after introducing myself. The woman (a complete stranger) thought I was flirting with her and I ended up in a disciplinary with HR for inappropriate behaviour. Be very careful who you use this advice with.
"It seems you were hitting on that female coworker. What are your thoughts?"
"Don't worry, I have learned the lesson. So you all look like you enjoy eating a lot?"

I think that talking about fitness to a woman brings up different connotations than if you talk about fitness to a man, quite simply because a man talking to a woman about her body is considered flirting or at least borderline usually, while guys are not as sensitive on the topic.
That said, at a setting where people are supposed to interact, and given the information I am aware of, I feel like she could have cut you a little more slack and tried to guage your intentions before coming to a conclusion.
In summary, I believe all parties involved could have done better, its just a little unfortunate that the learning experience for you was rather awkward.
I was wondering why this video was recommended to me until I saw the comments section. It all makes sense now.

The more I see videos like this, the more I understand that I just have anxiety. I follow this script, I don't do anything incredibly weird. But my mind puts everything under a microscope. And sometimes I just got to accept that I just don't vibe with everyone. Some conversations just arent going to be great.

What I've found is that people looove to talk about themselves! If you want to keep the conversation going, act like everything they say is the most interesting thing you've ever heard and you want to hear every single detail.
You study commerce? What do you do? What job would you pursue in the future? What are the assignments like? Your parents made you study it, what do your parents do? What would you rather be studying instead, why? Every single piece of detail is a prompt that you can keep building on.
And most of all, remember that the other person is a human being too! Chances are they want to keep the conversation going too and they'll want to cooperate with you. While trying to come up with ways to keep it going, remember to actually listen to what the other party is saying as well!
That's the only thing I know how to do, keep a conversation alive ? Yeah, start one, might need to call help on that one.

1. Open ended questions (how do you like ?)
2. Ask about their motivativations with a simple "Why?" (Why did you decide to get into ?)
3. When the conversation stalls, use revival questions:
- "How you guys know one other?"
- "What's your story?". The person might give options on what specifically, then you can read which option was mentioned in a more excited tone of voice
- "What are your plans to the future?"
4. Complimentary cold read (you look like you are pretty into )
5. In a cold silence, deep breath and keep easy eye contact. Alternatively, repeat the last words they've said

One thing I learned through my conversations, "some people are boring" don't push it, it they are exciting or excited in you, you'll never stop talking.
There’s nothing cooler than curating a vibe where you sit confidently with a dash of aloofness during those “awkward silences”
I do that practically all the time by accident bc of not often starting convos (unless with already established friends)
I disagree. I've been practicing this my entire life because I enjoy silence. But it hasn't made me "cool" or curate any kind of vibe that anyone else notices. Mainly it makes me forgettable, which is good. I don't want boring people to remember me, only the ones worth talking to.

I just like to ask completely random questions out of the blue. I don't mean stuff like "Where'd you get your shirt from?" or something. I mean questions like "Is soup a drink?" or "Do you pour cereal or milk first?" since those types of questions usually lead to a debate, or just an interesting conversation. Also yes, both of those questions were food related. Food is always a good conversation topic, since most everyone enjoys food (or at least has an opinion on it). Some other good questions to ask are hypotheticals. I like these since they're pretty interesting, and if you run out of them it's really easy to just make one up. Ex: "Would you rather fight 10 5 year olds or 2 20 year olds?" or "Would you eat a gallon of mayonnaise for 10,000 dollars?" You can also elaborate on the question, or change it slightly depending on their answer, like instead of "Would you eat a gallon of mayonnaise for 10,000 dollars?" it'd be "Would you eat a gallon of mayonnaise for 3.5 dollars?" Sorry for the long comment, and thanks to anyone who read all the way through! Hoped this helped!

I've come to learn a bit about this, and it took me a while to understand that it's not only me in a conversation that is struggling, it's both sides, (or in a group, all sides). This made me less worried about the responsibility of the conversation failing falling on me.
The open ended questioning was one of my key plays on first and second dates, along with asking what favourite and to elaborate on what makes it so
Me: You look like you are really into food!
Her: I'm pregnant.
Me: ...Why?

I need this. I usually don't ask broad enough questions. I often stayed opinions as facts and it always backfires. Same for answering questions literally, instead of giving an answer that better represents my unique point of view.

Ayy this was a GREAT video. It was very friendly and positive, not making you feel awkward imagining saying these things because you also brang out some arguments with them. Also, very important is, for someone with ADD like me, and with poor memory too, this video was very short and to the point and you even made a recap at the end to remember easily. I mean, first off, it’s important to always be yourself but this video really help out people with social anxiety. Thank you, I will use this in my future conversations!❤

My wife and I had dinner with people we see occasionally. Not real close. The other couple are very outgoing and talkative but we came to one of those grinding halts where everybody just sits there wishing they were not there. Then the host asked "read any good books lately". We were off and running. It was brilliant.

I usually try to convince myself to stay calm like I'm comfortable in the silence and then the other person becomes comfortable as well. It usually helps if there's somewhere I can look off to like the sea or people walking by

Whenever I have a silence with someone I ask him whether he/she wants to talk or enjoy the environment. When they wanna talk I‘ll ask which topic he/she wants to discuss. You‘ll build easily a conversation again.
If he/she chooses the other option it’s not awkward anymore. Besides they will start a convo again about how happy they are/like the environment/ you know when….etc
As an introvert, I can say that this video is very helpful

Now I am very socially awkward and I been working on my social skills. I realized being social is alot like a good form of mind games know how manipulate the conversation you can befriend anyone and it helps with the work force

Could you make a video on how to end conversations effectively without being rude? Especially if the other person is too chatty and can't understand regular cues that you need to leave for another matter?
pkmaniac Just say something like "It was pleasure to meet you, but unfortunately I have to go". That's what I do.
pkmaniac what I do and works fine, is to answer their last question, start leading the conversation and show interest in what the other person says, then without letting them say anything else I just say something like "so yeah that's what I think (or something like this depending on the situation), anyway it was nice talking to you, gotta go now". Basically, interrupt yourself to end the conversation, not the other person
Key to is start off the conversation with a disclaimers saying "I'm on my way to ____" or "I've got some work/something to do" to let them know that you could leave at any moment with good reason. Then, when you actually want to end the convo, interrupt yourself after you finish your thought and mention that you have to leave for ______ that you already mentioned at the start. It makes exiting the convo a lot less awkward.
