If they had upgraded the sensor, optics and displays and had okay weather sealing, I'd have zero issues picking one up as a travel camera as I like what Leica does with the jpegs but this is an old camera with a few tweaks.
The displays were upgraded, both EVF and rear panel. Lack of brightness is probably an oversight in the software, I doubt it's blasting 100% brightness 100% of the time.
No compact, fixed lens camera with a zooming mechanism has weather sealing. Also, upgrade the sensor to what? MFT sensors are pretty much capped out at 20ish mp right now. BSI and stacking isn't going to be a huge jump in quality either. A 1.8f, sharp lens is awesome for this size and format. Not sure what there is to upgrade there either
I was just in Calgary for the first time and attended the Stampede (for photos of course!). I had myself convinced I would run in to you and Jordan there! Pretty sure I didn't though! haha! Would have enjoyed that random encounter.
It feels like Leica made this without Panasonic and didn't really care about it. It's not a bad camera by itself considering lack of competition, but I hope Panasonic makes a proper LX100 upgrade.
This is definitely taking advantage of the recent compact camera craze, any significant R&D to improve it technologically probably would have delayed it to after the trend ended. I just hope it lasts because I could not care less about IC Sony's with nearly identical full frame sensors and features for $2000 each.
@@Vulturetanki When it comes to S-AF { my default } Panasonic's DFD works fantastically for the likes of street shooting. It's perceived weaknesses are with relation to C-AF/tracking where it does lag behind other AF methods . I have taken thousands of excellent images with various Panasonic models since 2009 with no issue. There is always a workaround for any cameras challenges , people have been taking every kind of photography imaginable for many decades with much poorer AF or no AF for that matter. Lots of people are impatient / lazy / not prepared to learn different techniques and want huge frame rates, pre-capture, every AF trick possible usually to capture a photo of a damn bird 😀 My current main m43 camera is the OM-1 and the AF for my use case is not really giving me anything special. If your love is C-AF of fast moving subjects then DFD does lose out, but realistically there are no bad cameras these days
Thanks for the video. Must say though, regarding the pixel art on Jordan's shirt, digital Chris seems to enjoy fishing a bit too much, seeing how the angel sticks out from his body :)
Seems like a compact with reasonable image quality (good enough for most people and uses), but truly excellent controls and menus. It's a bit high in price, but all this sort of compact camera are hot right now and a bit high in price. A used Canon G7Xiii on MPB is $1200 right now. In contrast, this has nicer controls, an EVF, and a larger sensor, for $300 more. If you want a top-end fixed-lens compact, right now you have to pay a lot for one. Can you beat it in IQ with something like a used a6600 and Sigma 18-50/2.8 at roughly the same as the G7X? Sure. But it's not a compact anymore. That form factor just costs more right now--demand is high enough and there are fewer models out there.
I absolutely loved my LX100 until it got stolen. I would love to get back to it. But since then i got to try the RX100s, GX7s, GX5s, etc and realized I could not live live without a tilting screen.
Years ago I used to have a Pana LX (7 I think). I agree the aspect ratio switch was great fun BUT I also agree the power zoom was just dreadfully slow and I cant believe that Pana/Leica don't seem to have made it a priority to improve
The original Panasonic LX100 had a big problem: dust sucked through the lens and landing on the sensor, rendering the camera all but useless. The Leica DLux8 seems to have the very same lens. Have they corrected the issue?
@@cinemaheist8 I can't speak for how he uses his cameras, but the X100VI is a lot more complicated than I think most people jumping on that hype train actually wanted. It's an excellent camera but it's only inferior to the X-Pro series in that the lens is fixed; otherwise it's a state of the art mirrorless camera with an integrated OVF that uses a Leica M-style frameline system for selecting different focal lengths. I personally way prefer that OVF system to a run-of-the-mill mirrorless camera that heavily relies on EVF or just a rear LCD, but a lot of people don't want something where the final exposure isn't previewed exactly, there can be glare in the finder etc.
@@Benjamin_Jehne Way smaller is a stretch. It's less than a 100g difference. To me that's not enough of a difference to compromise image quality but the zoom is a fair point.

At one time the DLux cameras used to be a pretty good deal because they came with a perpetual license of Light Room, so the value difference over the Panasonic version was really only just over a hundred bucks. My local pro-dealer always sold more Dlux over LX bedcause of that. Once that went away, the value proposition did too. And now we enter 2024, and selling the same lens and sensor in a more expensive package is... well... a rather 'Pentax" thing to do....
Saddly, as Chris said, there's a big demand for this kind of cameras+ it's a Leica. At this price (I think that's the cheapest Leica you can buy today, but don't quote me on that), I'm sure it will make it very attractive to a lot of people, not for pro work but as a hip or second, or even third camera. It's smart of them to repurpose old parts to quickly release this at that time of high demand but I don't think I'll ever buy something this lacking at that kind of price. But also, I have never been their target audience.
@@showdaKOs Hey, don't knock the Sofort 2 (the reskin of the Instax Mini Evo). Not really a serious camera, but I do think it's funny that technically it's the cheapest new Leica on the market at a little under $400. You're right that this was a good call on Leica to reuse old parts - no one really needs a GREAT compact camera on the market right now, they just need one at all and it will sell.

No. A new 25MP sensor could have been used vs the old 20MP sensor. That would have enlarged the cropped image size. Could Leica have squeezed an IBIS unit in this body? Ricoh did for the smaller GRiii body. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
The beginning of a revival of the compact camera market? One can dream. This camera looks like a joy to use, with its perfect zoom range and nice Leica buttons. However, I think it lacks some wow-factor, especially since it's essentially a re-branded Lumix. 🙂
Camera technology has pretty much plateaued. I suspect those who delight in criticising cameras like this are largely just gearheads, avid for the latest minuscule advances, and not so much concerned about the process of actually taking a photograph, let alone making something of it that’s worth looking at. In any event, if you like the way something looks and feels during the process, you’re much more likely to do so.
Yeah, doesn't look like it does. Right now only SL2 and Q3 support that. Don't know if a firmware update can do something about it or if it's too complicated to get the Looks into this MFT camera as the looks until now only work on full frame.
@@lelandfitz1762 I didn't know the SL3 was also excluded! I think it would be a great fit for this camera, but I'm not holding my breath. I get the feeling there's a few features they'd prefer to reserve for their more expensive models
Well Chris, the obvious answer to your desire of a small interchangeable lens camera is the Leica CL, which you shat on a few years ago. Still takes stunning images, and is better than the Dlux in every way. Can be had for the same price.
+1 for M43 interchangeable lens compact, with viewfinder... like, what's the problem? These were great cameras 10 years ago, but got squeezed out of the market by the needlesss (for this type of photography) scramble for FF at one end and flat, computational phones at the other. Updated with modern sensors, UI, lens tech, connectivity, computational modes, 'looks' and AF, they'd be the kings of casual carry! Most of these premium fixed lens compacts are great, but dust ingress is crazy and let's face it, they're PASs made premium.
I agree that more small cameras would be great. I'd love to see a successor to my Panasonic GX-850. I love it's m4/3 mount and that I can swap lenses for tremendous flexibility, and I love it's small size and weight. I'd like to see it updated to more current tech, and there's clearly demand for such cameras. Please Panasonic?
I have not used a digital camera where you could not set the aspect ratio to 1:1 in camera and compose the image. What were you trying to say in that segment?
Because the lens isn’t sized to cover the whole sensor, going to 1:1 actually allows it to use more vertical pixels than in rectangular modes. It’s quite different.
Hi, thanks for your overview of the Lux8. I've one problem. The camera is set as I want it but after power off some of the settings revert to default. eg. DNG reverts to DNG/JPG. I'd be grateful for your help.
I had the LX100 v1 and the user interface was the best part of the camera. To this day I feel like the UI on the LX100 was the best I’ve ever used (that’s the only Panasonic camera I’ve used, I wonder if Panasonic FF cameras have a similar UI). I just read that Leica made the software for this camera open source, which would be the greatest thing for cameras. If I could customize how this camera works rather than use the (albeit great) pre-defined UI, then I’d probably pick one up for my everyday driver.
@@cameraprepper7938 That’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard. I’ve wished this for the past 2 decades for the camera industry. Hopefully other manufacturers hand off control to the users.
I mean, I'm watching on a high resolution monitor in 4K and the IQ from this looks very acceptable. I don't think there is much to complain about with such a compact camera, other than the price for the "Leica" name. Most people with this will be able to share on socials and print just fine as long as they know what they're doing.
Would like to see Leica with an interchangeable lens M43 camera since they do have quite a few lenses with Panasonic. Just use the same sensor from G9II and it's all cool. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the Sony RX100VII for its compact size and zoom capability.
So lens and sensor fell "long in the tube" but what would you have changed? I think Leica saw the demand for the D-Lux 7 and that it will sell for a few years strong. Without them having to go R&D a totally new camera (on their own, as Panasonic apparently doesn't want that compact camera business anymore). I don't mind a working camera running for several years. There is a difference between consumer products and professional gear. Consumers use a camera for a decade or even more. What Leica made new: Leica Fotos app integration for example, and better UI *at the same price* as the 7 is just amazing for anyone who would've bought a 7 anyways and now gets a small little Leica.
I had already decided I wasn't going to buy this to replace my Canon G5 X Mark II but I thought I would give it one more chance if you guys were excited about it. lol. I was really hoping that the APS-C rumor about this camera was going to be true and that it would be the X100 killer.

Not sure if it’s corporate group think as to why most of the camera companies have not joined in making a good p&s. In my case I got tired of my iPhone not giving me the images I wanted. So rather than drag around one of my DSLR’s or Mirrorless cameras I got myself an Olympus Pen - 3 which goes everywhere with me. I’m building up lenses so I can add a Pen - F or a new release from OM Systems. As for the comments ragging on Leica for putting this out, no one is making you buy it and if others wish to spend their money on it, it’s their own business.
I do not remember anyone have mentioned it, I have never seen any magnification ratio, it only tells it can focus to 3cm, but not at which focal length.

If this has success, it might be a restart for the segment. If this thing is so successful that Leica earns enough money with it to justify a R&D of a completely own version, with just some parts from Panasonic. That would be nice.
I had the LX100 II for a few DAYS and promptly sent it back (I rarely return cameras). It was frustratingly SLOW (lens zoom and so on) and pretty bad EVF. Other than that, it made nice images and the lens optics was good to me, but overall, I just couldn't stand it. I sure hope Leica found a way to improve it.
@@martingreenberg870 I like the idea of that camera, but they just need to update it to modern specs/speeds. It doesn’t have to be a mini pro camera, it just needs to for example be as fast as a Fuji X-T30 with the power zoom Fuji has. That would make the little LX100 II / Leica much more appealing.
Goes to show that the S9 would have been fine, or quite a bit better, for the use case it's intended for (aside from selling higher margin full frame lenses) if it were instead a proper GM10 with an MFT mount or a new GX10 with the G9.ii's sensor package. I'm holding on to my full set of MFT gear for work and play, hoping that a proper GX8.ii or GX10 is released to replace/go with my OM-5/Pen F kit. MFT fits my needs perfectly, was sad that the S9 was, well, an S9 and not a GM10. I have another equally irrelevant bunch of kit to cover the rest of the sensor sizes (Pentax KP, K-1.ii, and 645Z with shelves of lenses from the beginning to current). TBH, I prefer a GX85 with a 20mm f1.7 over this compact. Shame they didn't really put the money into it and release it with a new 20mm f1.7 or f1.4 Leica lens. I've been dreaming of a PanaLeica 20mm for years to match the 25mm f1.4 mark ii's feel, af speed, and at least some weather sealing. Would be sad to see it on a fixed lens system, but that may have been some hope for it to make it to a real MFT mount in the future.
I am not sure why, but watching this video just makes me hope the olympus pen f will have a version 2 lol. Good lens, retro look, good image quality, and its gonna be (hopefully) much cheaper than the leica.

LOng in the tooth. I think they should have used 25 MP which is available and better. However...I believe some camerabrands come out with FF cams still in 24 MP but in some (most) reviews I see an explanation how it is not long in the tooth...So what makes this one long in the tooth? I own en LX100II since 10 months and my Em1.2 gets less and less use but yeah for sports or aurorae etcetc it is my cam of course. It is long in the tooth may be, but all newer mFT cams do not convince me to be usefully better for me. For this cam...I dislike the choice of no dedicated exp comp button/wheel. I love the way it is now. And on the price. I got a really as new LX100II in London for 700 quid. Great deal. A collegue of mine who wanted to add something like that to his Panny G9....He just never could get it, not even in the D Lux7 format. So 1500 dollar is surely not too expensive. And no: it is not meant for videographers. So you can test it, but it is clear it is not meant for it at all. Finally I have an Gm5 and I do not find much fun to use , not compared to my LX100II not even close. Never use it. So if there is going to be a GM7 or 10 or whatever, they need to do a lot better. My favourite GM10 would be this cam, can be a bit bigger, with the LX100II buttons, 25 MP sensor and OSPDAF and OLED EVF. Finally did you not test the IBIS? Onthe LX100II that is a lot worse than my EM1.2 and I understand why, but in 2024 one would expect it to be better.

I was just in Calgary for the first time and attended the Stampede (for photos of course!). I had myself convinced I would run in to you and Jordan there! Pretty sure I didn't though! haha! Would have enjoyed that random encounter.
Nice review Chris. Managed to order one today it arrives next week. Going to replace a GRiiiX as my EDC. Will let you know of if I regret it….! Ken
Without being a "dust-magnet" !
In 2022 Pansonic stepped out of the R&D for new compacts.
It is a real retro camera because it has Panasonic’s good old out-of-focus/hunting technology.
Nope, Panasonic is great focus for street photography single shot focusing. Made for real photographers.
@@lorenschwiderskiCopeium
I actually really like it and hope more manufacturers would use it as it mitigates the banding issues and PDAF pixels interpolation.
@@Vulturetanki Those which own a Panasonic GX-9 or GX-85 know the focus is fast and accurate. Believe what you wish.
G7X iii does not have a larger sensor. Even with the slight cropped, the D-Lux 8 is still quite larger than the 1”
@@_TT90 That's.... that's what I said. For $300 more than a used G7Xiii, the D-Lux 8 has a larger sensor, an EVF, and better menus.
Have they corrected the issue?
had mine for a couple weeks now... took it on vacation with the family and, well, i did not touch the X100VI that came along on that same trip
Why? What does the DLux give you that the x100vi cannot?
@@cinemaheist8 Because the x100vi does not have the logo "Leica" on in. You pay $500 for this camera and $1000 for the brand.
@@cinemaheist8 It‘s way smaller and you get a zoom.
@@Benjamin_Jehne Way smaller is a stretch. It's less than a 100g difference. To me that's not enough of a difference to compromise image quality but the zoom is a fair point.
All we need are small fun ILC M43 cameras. I believe the new GM5 would be bestseller...
Agreed. Either that or a new GX9. Sign me up.
@@craig_cunha The GM and GX bodies can’t support the PDAF sensor because of the additional heat it generates. Also it requires a larger battery that won’t fit into the smaller LUMIX bodies. So sad.

I would buy one, too.
Leica likes to deceive brand fanatics. Conveying a false sense that they are special by using this rotten camera with the Leica logo.
Nice vid. And you really do give a sense of how wonderful Calgary might be. Smells and all. I was taken by this camera when it came out. Irrational maybe and certainly great marketing. Will rent one when available to try out just for the fun of it. Because it just looks fun. Thanks

Love my LX100 (version 1). I still use mine casually. The version 2 didn't really upgrade what I wanted and so does this.
But maybe someday we'll see an LX100 III.
Edit: at 7:20 - my LX100 has a zoom resume function. Does Leica not have it?
I hope they fixed the dust issue getting stuck in the lens and the internal battery running out after a few years and having to set the date and time manually every startup!

Looks like a great travel camera.
Is it unreasonable to expect improvements to image quality and resolution given that 6 years have passed since the previous model was introduced?
No. A new 25MP sensor could have been used vs the old 20MP sensor. That would have enlarged the cropped image size. Could Leica have squeezed an IBIS unit in this body? Ricoh did for the smaller GRiii body.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I have an older LX100 MK1. It is my never leave home without it camera.
Are you sure about 9:27? My app says that the D-Lux 8 doesn't support Leica looks!

Panasonic needs to make LX100 III and GX9 II. Put the new 25 MPx sensor and phase detection auto focus in them. That would be awesome
You just can’t beat the RX100 for a travel camera. I’m still shocked when I look at some of the images I got out of that camera
Well Chris, the obvious answer to your desire of a small interchangeable lens camera is the Leica CL, which you shat on a few years ago.
Still takes stunning images, and is better than the Dlux in every way. Can be had for the same price.
DLUX 7 & LX100II had stepped zoom & remember lens position on reboot. I understood that Leica won't do it because it's not aligned with their ethos.
Thanks for the review!
Chris it could be worse, imagine the camera turning on at 35mm instead of 24mm!
2:26 love the new shutter sound 😂
Good luck with that.

It’s quite different.
as a leica shooter I appreciate this camera because the profits get reinvested into M lens R&D
Hi, thanks for your overview of the Lux8. I've one problem. The camera is set as I want it but after power off some of the settings revert to default. eg. DNG reverts to DNG/JPG. I'd be grateful for your help.
thanks for your review, very accurate and it shows the limits too.
What SD card do you recommend: UHS-I or UHS II ? Latter seems recommended by Leica.
Leica made the software Open Source because Leica will not support the Leica D-Lux 8.
4k is 8 Megapixel.
Would like to see Leica with an interchangeable lens M43 camera since they do have quite a few lenses with Panasonic. Just use the same sensor from G9II and it's all cool. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the Sony RX100VII for its compact size and zoom capability.
Want to see you guys at the old store :)

Hey Hello,
I heard last week that the weather is extremely bad in Canada.
Are you and your family unscathed?
Does it still make that idle noise like the D-Lux 7?
Not sure if it’s corporate group think as to why most of the camera companies have not joined in making a good p&s. In my case I got tired of my iPhone not giving me the images I wanted. So rather than drag around one of my DSLR’s or Mirrorless cameras I got myself an Olympus Pen - 3 which goes everywhere with me. I’m building up lenses so I can add a Pen - F or a new release from OM Systems. As for the comments ragging on Leica for putting this out, no one is making you buy it and if others wish to spend their money on it, it’s their own business.
Maybe the best P&S camera is the Ricoh GRiii/x.

Damn this would have so much potential :(
If this has success, it might be a restart for the segment. If this thing is so successful that Leica earns enough money with it to justify a R&D of a completely own version, with just some parts from Panasonic. That would be nice.
Can we please have a square sensor?! :-)
Tell that to Hassleblad
I had the LX100 II for a few DAYS and promptly sent it back (I rarely return cameras). It was frustratingly SLOW (lens zoom and so on) and pretty bad EVF. Other than that, it made nice images and the lens optics was good to me, but overall, I just couldn't stand it. I sure hope Leica found a way to improve it.
Not likely as Chris has suggested, the D-Lux8 is a slightly updated D-Lux7/LUMIX LX100ii.

@@martingreenberg870 I like the idea of that camera, but they just need to update it to modern specs/speeds. Great Video
What's the name of the song from 2:14 to 3:24?
Yay for an improved EVF!
Give me a Lumix GX85 II, that's all I want. (Throw in some weatherseal and it will be perfect)
I went from the LX5 to the LX100, to this day there's been nothing compelling about their replacements to warrant an upgrade.
I would prefer the GX series so it will also have IBIS.

Of course the EMD1 Mii is a much larger body so more room for the IBIS unit. Plus Olympus is the king of IBIS.
