Folks, I’ve made a mistake in this video. Using the image crop feature on the lens barrel bakes the crop into BOTH the JPEG and DNG file. If you shoot mono images, though, you do still get the full colour version in the DNG file. Sorry for this cock-up. It seems I confused the X2D’s functionality (a camera I often use alongside the Leica) with the D-Lux when I prepared this video. Thanks go to Bill Green for pointing this out.

Very interesting, comprehensive and honest review Peter. Rather than comment about the camera, I'd just like to mention the production quality of the video itself that was smooth, well-paced and kept my attention. Being interspersed with clear illustrations and practical examples kept it from getting boring like some gear review videos can be! I have owned a D-Lux 8 since late October 2023 and the reasons that I purchased it are very much aligned with yours. I have a full-frame mirrorless camera and I wanted an EDC camera and something that I could use when on holiday abroad. That last factor is really important for me: I usually travel on budget airlines where taking my 'real' camera is just a pain, and I also do not want photography to dominate the days I spend with my partner when we are away from home together.
I am really smitten with the little Leica for all the reasons that you like it. I have just returned from a week in Malta and I am blown away by the image quality and sheer flexibility of the Leica. Incidentally, I used a Bellray sling when away; it's a larger 10 litre version, so that I can carry all my travel necessities with me.
I cannot see me buying into the more expensive Leicas, but this is the perfect EDC camera for me, and I am so pleased with my purchase.
Thanks for encapsulating my thoughts on the D-Lux 8 so comprehensively.

Super comprehensive and balanced review that details the rational behind the DLUX 8. I also purchased the DLUX8 despite owning the Panasonic LX100ii, which was later sold. I also have many other full frame and MFT cameras but love the simplicity of the DLUX8 and will often pickup this camera for travel and street photography. Thank you for taking time to make such a thoughtful and well presented video of your experience with this camera. Despite it not receiving the attention I feel it deserves, possibly because of its smaller sensor size and historical links to the earlier reiterations, I believe that it is consistently out of stock here in the UK at our Manchester Leica Store, so I assume it must be selling well.
As I long time Olympus User, who was hoping for they would release a Pen F Pro with a series of updated f1.4 or F1.8 primes at 12, 17, 25, 45, 75 mm or if not the camera, then at least the lenses, this Leica had an immediate appeal. I just wish it had a tilting rear screen like the Q3 and in particular that it was weather proof. Hopefully, the camera will be sufficiently successful to remain in the Leica catalog and when the time comes to release an updated version, Leica will incorporate the tilting screen and weather protection. Given the apparent lack of interest from OM Systems in the aforementioned Pen F Pro, I suspect an updated Leica will come first. Bottom line, the Leica is exactly the kind of camera the industry should be looking to provide to attract a new audience to the hobby.
Best wishes for the year ahead.

I really enjoyed this review because it's refreshing to hear from someone who just enjoys a camera because it fulfils a personal need, both performance wise and in the handling, rather than just a spec analysis. I love shooting with my Canon G5xii when I just want to carry a small camera, but I'm tempted by this Leica. Just don't know whether it's enough of a step up to justify the price. I would miss Canon's tilting screen...as you say, it's a shame Leica didn't incorporate that. I'm also used to processing RAW using DPP, so I'd need to get used to different RAW processing software. Well done review that focuses on what is important about a camera for the D-Lux 8's designed use cases, and not box front specifications. This little camera does provide a genuine Leica user experience, and produces wonderful images. I am really enjoying mine. While the UI is current leica in esthetics, the camera does carry over some of the Panasonic software features underneath the covers. These are largely undocumented in the D-Lux 8 implementation. One such example is that when you set the camera to shoot DNG and either Medium, or Small JPEG you get the first 75mm as optical zoom, and up to 150mm of digital zoom on top. The zoom scale will reflect this, and the rear screen and EVF WYSIWYG will also show this. It will crop the JPEG, but not the RAW. So, it is a useful tool to help visualize, and compose a crop when shooting, yet retain the full resolution in RAW. Since it requires multiple menu choices to set up, it is best to do it in a profile to enable you to switch to this mode quickly when needed. Experiment with this, you will likely find it useful.

      @stevendente9270 8 дней назад

@@cjvanbeelen6789 Happy to help. This is an undocumented feature that is likely left over from code from the previous panasonic versions of the camera. It a couple of simple steps to get it to work. First you must set the FILE FORMAT to DNG + JPG. Then you must set JPG SETTINGS to S-JPG(4 MP). Now when you go to zoom you will see the zoom range as shown on the bar at the bottom of the screen now goes to 150mm. When you Zoom the first 75mm will be done optically so you will get the full M4/3 image. After that the zoom from 75mm to 150mm will be done by cropping. Understand that this crop (and zoom) only applies to the JPG file. The DNG file will still be only zoomed to the optical 75mm. You can use the JPG, or you can still use the full M4/3 DNG file and manually crop in post. But you will have the benefit of seeing the crop while shooting to help you with composition. It works very nicely this way. I hope this explaination is clear and helpful for you. -Steve-

@@cjvanbeelen6789 Remember that the Zoom is continuous so you can get all the intermediate crops up to 150mm. The resolution of Medium and Small JPEG is listed in the menu where you select the size. Also know that when you open the RAW in your editing program depending on how you have it set up you will see the RAW cropped. But if you click to Re-Set the Image (button on bottom of editing panel) you will get the full resolution RAW with only the Optical Zoom applied. You can then crop to your liking. Doing it this way makes the feature just a composition tool when shooting and you lose nothing in the RAW. Have fun with this undocumented feature.

Small, but pro quality, pocketable but still a proper camera-holding experience. Like yo u I don’t like expanding Zoom; sooner or later a grain of sand is gonna get inside. Also you would hv to carry 2 or 3 other lens to be able to hv the coverage u get with a zoom. And the price seems fair-ish, especially for a Leica. Also I’ve admired the Leica App before… and yeah, pity it doesn’t hv a flip screen, no doubt the next one will have one, with an appropriate hike in price … Anyway, thanks again, really appreciated the very informative and honest review, really helpful. Great review. I have considered one to compliment my daily travels. I also want the RX100 VII and will probably side with the Sony. Not a money issue, as I already own Canon and Leica for work. The Sony would be my EDC. Oh, just letting you know, it is a Panasonic made camera. Having spoken with a Leica rep, its classified as a manufacturing collaboration between the two brands. No, Panasonic won't be releasing one. As advised by a sales rep for Panasonic, the brand is out of the compact market due to smartphone competition, hence the cease in manufacturing of their popular TZ220. Even a Leica sales guy in Australia (won't mention which store ) quietly told me it is a Panasonic. Panasonic has the capability for production of these bodies where Leica doesn't. Suppose you could say its no different to the SL3 and Q3 as the sensors are actually Sony designed and manufactured, Leica is an optics company, not a sensor company. The focus detection on the Q3 series is Panasonic origin. The only true Leica camera today are the film series models along with m10, perhaps m11 and all older models except the d-lux and c-lux range which are all Panasonic.

Excellent review on the D Lux 8, your sentiment pretty much aligns with mine, except I prefer film. Been an M2 and M3 shooter over 50 years. Never thought about upgrading to the later models…..if it works fine and you are happy with the results, why change…..besides I prefer the single frame lines in the view finder since these are the lenses I use, the others are only a distraction.
One of my closest friends has been trying to get me to switch to digital for years. I continued watching the changes in the technology. The M10M got my attention but it was a little pricey. Then the M11, ok I’ll think about it. When I found out about the Q2 it was already about 2 years old and rumors about a Q3 being released soon (Leica years). Ok you got my attention. I shoot a lot with a 28mm so makes sense. Then the Q3, 43 ok I’ll go to the Leica Store since Samy’s doesn’t have them in stock at their stores in LA or Pasadena.
So at the Leica Store I checked out both Q3’s but thought I’ll check out the newly released D Lux 8. I thought that before committing to a high end digital Leica try this instead. The sales person told me they only had one in stock, I was about to procrastinate and think about it but my daughter, who was with me at the time reminded me that I’d regret it if I didn’t pick it up. Sold…..I chose wisely.
Like you I got the grip and thumb grip.
It’s a great shooter and intro into digital.

Nice review, I agree with what you say, the camera that filled the same position for me is a Fuji X100vi, it has a fixed 35mm lens but the 40mp I,age means it can easily be compared to 50 or 70 mm if required while still retaining great image quality. It’s leaf shutter means it’s built in flash can also sync up to 1/4000th of a second. It’s very well made with great traditional controls like the Leica and in addition has that fold out screen the Leica doesn’t have. I also have the earlier X100t and that is also still a good camera capable of great pictures, but the 6 stops of ibis on the vi makes things a bit easier with slower shutter speeds. I also have a Panasonic Z200 which is a good travel camera with its 1” sensor and 24-360mm zoom range, it doesn’t come near the Fuji for image quality but it gives me reach in a very small package.

On the positive side, she could use this camera in full auto, aperture priority, shutter priority, or full manual, so there’s plenty of scope to learn in stages. And the focal range is ideal, too. Having access to crop ratios will help with framing compositions, and the little flash will add another layer of learning, too. First of all - thank you for this superb review. I‘m a pro photographer for more than 25 years now and I bought the D-Lux 8 some weeks ago. Because I‘m almost 56 years old and I don‘t kneed my Sony ff equipment on vacation this tiny little performer does the job for me. There is so much to love about this cam (build quality, Leica Look & Feel, dynamic range of the DNG files and much more…) so from this point it’s a good camera. Sadly the lens is - for me - just „ok“. Even if you use F5.6 the borders are only ok in comparison to mft zoom lenses like the Olympus 12-40 F2.8 Pro. In general the borders are not that sharp and whats even worse for me: Leica removed the Step-Zoom feature we know from the Panasonic LX100II. Neither step zoom nor the focus ring can be used for zooming. Thats sad and to be honest -> why did Leica decide for that? I don‘t get it.
With that in mind the camera is still a pretty good one - but I still hope that Leica will bring the step-zoom feature and the zoom ring back with an upcoming firmware update. Best wishes and thanks again for your review.

I agree! A smartphone is not a camera. When it comes to picture taking, economically, it's a disaster. However, with the ubiquity of these flat pocket-ready devices, more and more people are acclimating to this "modern" method of photography. Much of today's generation has no idea what they're missing; most have never held a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Indeed, why carry a "camera" when a smartphone fits in the pocket, especially if one has never experienced the benefits of an actual camera? I've witnessed my grown children with a DSLR; it's analogous to a fish out of water. They're so uncomfortable with it, but put that smartphone in their hand; they can conquer the world. Interesting. I saw few images on the Leica user forum and most of them if not all were simply out of focus. I used to have DLux 3 and it was great little camera, currently using SL2S and small RX1003 which I want to replace with DLux8, but those blurred examples scared me. How fast is the focus, no problem with sharpnes? Your picures looks great but did you process them a lot or are these out of camera?

@@mike_qbik Don’t know why people would post blurry images. I’ve had no such issues. The focus is snappy, the images are sharp, and the colours and dynamic range are all lovely. I don’t process my images much. I’m too lazy for that!

As much as I like the menu system and overall design the D-Lux 8 lacks the customization of the preceding Lumix models and I wouldn't buy it unless Leica adds these USER OPTIONS: 1- Save current focal length : Yes/No. 2- Zoom on lens ring : Yes/No. 3- Step Zoom on lens ring : Yes/No. 4 - Step Zoom on W/T button : Yes/No.

It’s a damn shame that they’ve seemingly produced 10 of these cameras total. 😂 The moment I saw it drop, I went to preorder it - that option wasn’t even available. All I can do is wait to be contacted by multiple stores and it’s been months without a word. I even went to a Leica store and they only had a used version of the older model with an inferior EVF and priced almost like it was new. I want this camera…Leica just doesn’t want to sell it here in the United States.

Went to the Leica Store near the Grove and Beverly Center just a little a month ago. I was looking at the Q3/28, Q3/43 and the D-Lux 8. Just looking but not to buy. They had one D-Lux 8 in stock but was thinking on waiting but my daughter convinced me to pick it up rather than putting it off. Well picked it up then and no regrets except haven’t had more free time to fully explore it but so far think it was a wise choice.
Although I have seen some negative reviews, I think that they are based upon the expectations that this a pro level camera….it’s not and it wasn’t intended to compete with the other Leica digital cameras. It is basically an excellent point and shoot….. between an iPhone and mid range digital cameras.
I purchased mine to explore digital as a 60-70 yrs film photographer, I thought it was time to supplement my film photography.
