Love the review. Agree completely with your assessment and how you used it in Italy. I'm going on my 10th year of using the Typ 109. The D-LUX series cameras are by no means perfect, but it's truly a fantastic point-and-shoot and I love its versatility. My only complaint is the dust issue as I've had to get the sensor cleaned 3 or 4 times via Leica Customer Care. Was using the camera last week and noticed either a dead pixel or more dust. Dead pixels happen, but there's no apparent way to map the pixels to fix it. Would love to see this and some form of weather resistance/ better sealing against dust on any future iteration.
Thanks for your thoughts. Ya sorry to hear about your dust-on-sensor issue. You’ve really used yours though, which is fantastic. I love it when someone uses a camera until it dies or breaks. I’ve done it with many cameras. it means you used it to the max!! These little point and shoots weren’t meant to last unfortunately, but we can create beautiful photos with it during it’s lifetime. That’s what they were made for!
Honestly a very good camera, if whomever can develop a next generation micro four-thirds sensor (a slight bump to like 25 megapixels, but more importantly lower base ISO/more DR) and Leica gets rid of the silly aspect ratio thing, I can see the D-Lux 9 being a powerhouse. My wish list is the lens becomes a 20-70mm equivalent, that extra on the wide end would be amazing for this sort of camera.
A 25MP sensor does exist for M43 already, as well as a stacked sensor. It’s just a matter of price. As for a lens, I think 21-50mm without making the lens much bigger would be ideal for someone like myself, but the average person probably prefers 24-75mm equivalent. Let’s see with the next generation. Firmware update first 😊😊
I will say that Panasonic and Leica typically have tech exclusivity agreements around their cameras meaning either Leica or Panasonic will release their equivalent a year or so later. I have zero doubts that a few months in Panasonic will release something new in the LX series.
If Panasonic makes a new LX series camera, I would be happy. But I think the Panasonic customer’s will be less forgiving than Leica customers, unless they put the 25MP sensor and add an articulating screen.
@bigheadtaco it’s a surprisingly capable camera. It’s often negatively compared to the Fuji x100vi from a price and its micro 4/3 sensor perspective, but I think people underestimate the power of its lens both from quality but also from zoom capability point of view. As one can optically zoom 17MP is plenty and it’s a relatively fast lens. That combination is very powerful and I think the D-Lux easily stands its ground against the Fuji. Being a Q3 / Q3 43 shooter myself I find the D- Lux very tempting.
The original X100 was 12MP, and the first generation X Series was 16MP. It’s still a capable camera and I’ve seen images blown up huge with that sensor. 17MP is more than enough for the average person. Even for a professional, as long as they don’t heavily crop, you can easily print up to 20 x 24 size.
How do so many young student at such expensive Leica class? What do they do in life? By the way, what you think of Nikon Zf with 28-400mm lens, same situation as SL, too big for these photos?
Nice review even though it felt like more like commercial sponsored by Leica! Considering you’ve been using a GRIII for 15 years it would have been valuable listening to you compare those two pocketable cameras.
If you use zooom a lot, then yes, having the range of 24-75mm equivalent in 35mm, versus only 35mm equivalent on the X100 series of cameras, the D-Lux8 might be a better choice. However, in terms of resolution, I/O, weather sealing, sensor size and resolution, the X100VI is ‘better’. It really depends on what you’re looking for.
I'm passing on this camera for now. As much as I like the menu system and overall design the D-Lux 8 lacks the customization of the preceding Lumix models and I wouldn't buy it unless Leica updates the firmware with these options: 1- Save current focal length : Yes/No. 2- Zoom on lens ring : Yes/No. 3- Step Zoom on lens ring : Yes/No. 4 - Step Zoom on W/T button : Yes/No. 5 - Digital zoom (75-105) : Yes/No.
Yes, we need a proper firmware update with the features you mentioned. I also mentioned these things and more (long press on play just to view images without lens sticking out) in my first look video. Thanks for your thoughts .
I’m sure they see how popular this camera is. Leica typically don’t make new models so quickly, but I think maybe they make an exception with this one.
In the realm of digital, I cannot believe that for 8000$ more value in a Leica camera.. Is there 8K of difference between A full frame Fuji or Canon with their associate lenses? I ran into a guy in Montreal who was shooting one of the Leica MONO cameras and I convinced him to send me some samples.. I did not see that much difference in cameras 1/4 the price... Perhaps it is just that red dot that sets it apart... That's y beef. ;-)

My next portable Leica ❤ D Lux 8 ❤❤❤
Always great to see your reviews 👍🏻
J.
Awesome, congrats! Some Leica stores do have them in stock like Leica Store SF
Thank you for a great review as always 👍🏻

I do appreciate the back buttons and Leica menu, but they should have done more to differentiate it from the Panny LX100

Leica explicitly said that there will be no Panasonic version of this camera.
@@umaraslam7731 they did? Do you have a link.
The JJC auto cap for the LX100 fits the Dlux 8 and at only £12 ... not the £70 of the Leica branded version.
Cool, thanks for the heads up. I knew I saw someone making it.

This wasn’t a Leica class. This was a field school which included various company and cultural visits, including a visit to the Leica Store in Rome.

Is this better than Fuji x100 v/vi

It does have digital zoom but only for small or medium JPEG mode.

A Little More improvement and I will buy the d lux 9 for sure

There’s no question that the files have the distinct Leica colour about them. Which is to say they’re gorgeous.
It’s not a Leica sensor.
@ I know and it doesn’t need to be to have the same colour signature.
