    Hello everyone! I recorded this video a while back so I should say the Lumix 24 mm does finally exist even though it isn’t exactly easy to get a hold of yet. Even so the Sigma 24 mm should be pretty good as well.

    In Australia 2024, the kit lens is actually FREE if you buy a new S5ii and you can go and sell it on used market for $200-300

    I use the S5 for personal, not professional use.
    This 20-60 lens is very easy to use. It is true that the image quality is not very good when zoomed in, and there is some flare when a bright light source like the sun is close by, but the portability and build quality are very good, and the fact that it can capture a wider angle than a standard zoom lens is really great.
    When I go out to shoot, I use the 20-60 lens for default, and switch to a single focal length lens to pursue image quality when necessary.
    Since I also shoot video, the only thing I really miss is the lack of bokeh when the camera is set to f/5.6.

      Its a really unique kit lens. I wish more companies would push the envelope to make some cool stuff like this!

    Great video. This is great combo, since I got this, I dumped canon R6, this is that good. I use it for family activities (nothing pro), this great grab-n-go combo.

    And now we have an 18mm, 24mm, both f/1.8, and the 16-35 f4. Having said that, I still use the 20-60 sometimes, just because I have always been really happy with how that looks on my S5. I have gotten some incredibly good content using that lens. Plus, the auto focus on the S5 seems to work best with that lens. And with dual ISO, the slower aperture is not that much of a concern, at least on my S5. Also, I'm a narrative filmmaker, so I will take that lens out in really bad weather, because if I mess it up, it's not that big of a deal. :-) but overall, I find that it does a really good job. I think for the price, it's really kind of essential for most people to have in their kit. At least to me. ;)

    Here in the UK the kit lens is also sold with the 50mm as part of a kit. I use 20mm at f3.5 a lot for establishing interior shots, the 24mm comes in handy for groups of 2 or 3 people etc, 90% of the time I'll swap out to the 50mm for anything past 24mm (rarely use 35mm)
    I could see myself just using this lens for outdoor events when I really need to work fast and not change lenses. So this combo works for me

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  Год назад

      Yea exactly! A fast wide angle is handy sometimes but not always necessary. I think you’d love the 85mm too! I can’t wait to get a hold of that lens

    I'll tell you what the conundrum is with this lens. It's the 20-60mm range + size + weight. Also, a lot of reviewers have by in large liked this lens and rated it as "one of the best kit lenses," etc. When you look at the S/L mount zoom options for the S5II, they're all heavier than sin. You can't justify the 16-35mm when you have this lens. I've tried to. You have mixed emotions about buying a 35mm or 50mm when you've got this lens unless they threw in the 50mm. I'd really like to get the 35mm, but again, I possess that range option, perhaps not as bright or sharp an option. A 24-70mm seems unnecessary given the weight and the range limitation at 70mm, also given you have in your hand a lens with a 60mm range. The 24-105mm could work but it's still heavy and generally like unenthusiastically by reviewers. DPReviews samples were not awe inspiring either. The Sigma options are equally frustrating in terms of weight and quirky issues. I've basically returned all the lenses I acquired (16-35 Pro and 70-200mm Pro F4) and will ride at least for now with the 20-60 and 50mm. There's always www.lensrentrals.com. I still might get the 35mm or 24mm, since I shoot the latter range most of the time. Great video!

      Honestly this makes a lot of sense to me haha. Its very tough. Maybe something like the 14-28 and/or 28-200 makes more sense as a base lens thats still small enough or even the 28-70 from sigma! Personally I do love some of the prime lenses but yea having a zoom that covers the same range feels a little redundant but the blur, when needed is pretty nice.

    So when I bought the S5 and had it for a handful of days before returning it for the A7s3, I really liked the lens. Its a really good focal length indeed. At at 20mm it want to terribly slow shooting FF.

    Dude, every time I see an S5 video from you I want it. Question would you say it's worth getting the S1 over the S5? I'm not going to use to shoot myself so the flip screen is a non issue for me and honestly I'd say I would prefer the tilting screen over the full articulation screen honestly. BUT, pound for pound is the S1 worth the extra couple hundred $100's? I have seen a few S1's used for around the same price as the S5 and sometimes less with the video upgrade. Would that be worth it to you?

    I'm thinking this feels like more of a tweener than maybe it really is. It's not at the pro level, so you say eh, I really don't want it all that bad. But it's hardly unacceptable, and since you're effectively paying $300 for it new you're getting a pretty good deal. Now you can get primes for your serious work and you're covered for casual stuff and when you need the convenience. I haven't sat down with charts and graphs to see what you could do with the $300 you save _not_ getting it but I think it's worthwhile.

    I always film with my 12-40 2.8 olympus pro lense on my gh5 so stopping down this one to 5.6 would not change my filming in terms of depth of field as it is the same. The olympus probably has better optical quality tough.

    I used to have this lens. It could be the best kit lens ever but the flare is unacceptable. Lack of good quality inexpensive lenses with good flare resistance was the key reason I sold Panasonic s5 and moved to Nikon z6 and Sony a7c.

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  Год назад +1

      I suppose. People talk about the lack of options on L mount but I just don’t see it personally but of course Sony has more.
      Panasonic prioritizes video stuff so I find myself lacking for much myself (besides the AF of course)
