I had experience with crappy kit lenses like canon ef-s 18-55mm and I was expecting the Panasonic to be along those lines. I was SHOCKED at how good this lens is. This has replaced the Canon 24-70 f4 as the standard walkabout lens on my S1. Well done, Panasonic !
Thank you Richard, you're the only one to show us how sharp, at different apertures, this lens actually is. Thank. Seems good even today for landscape photography...
It answers everything i wanted to know about this lens . My favorites wide focals are 20mm and 28mm , so a 20-40mm catch my attention . The 40-60mm zone can also be usefull mostly when the weather makes changing lenses risky. Slow apertures are ok for a wide zoom where i would use mainly f5.6 to f11 when it keep it light and cheap . I fully agree that 24mm is too often not quite wide enough and 20mm mostly is. For people like me , such a lens is now a distinctive plus for that mount.
I think that this lens is hinting that Panasonic’s next camera may be squarely made for vlogging, assuming that this lens will come in basic kit lens packages. This lens looks to be really ideal for video making.
I photograph landscapes. If the scene is too wide for my lens, I make two or more shots and join them up later. If the lens has vignetting or other distortions in the corners, that would concern me. In principle, I can photograph most subjects with a prime such as a 50mm lens, though sometimes that lacks convenience. I have some ultrawide shots made using a 60mm macro lens on a G9, and I have at least one made from three shots at 24mm on Canon FF. I have found no reviews demonstrating stitching with any lens, intended to reflect on lens quality. This sounds like it should be ok at F8, but I don't remember anyone talking about diffraction. My intended camera is an S1R.
HI Richard. Excellent review as always! I was most interested in your sharpness comparison between it and the 24-105 at like focal lengths and apertures. From your testing, I see that the 24-105 is sharper in center, which was expected, given the price and feature differences. BTW, I've read a few older comments on another site regarding the lumix S Pro 70-200 f/4 having "focus issues" with the S1. Have you tested that combination lately, and would a firmware update since then have corrected/improved the situation? Thanks!
Just sold my 20-60 to get the sigma 28-70 F2.8. Never really used the 20-60 lens. Something about it just was uninspiring. Photos have no character with this lens and I noticed when shooting video and zooming the exposure would dim noticeably while recording. Would look like a glitch. Dunno if it was just my copy, but off it went.
350g makes it an excellent match for exploring with the SIGMA fp - especially if one is using mostly small M lenses, but still needs a fun+friendly AF lens to complement them
Hey Richard, once again a very informative video, thank you. As a long time 20-60ml lens user, I found that the corner sharpness is actually quite bad, especially when I use it to shoot group photos, people who are around the corner of the image usually look a bit soft (sometimes even blurry) and distorted, quite annoying actually, have you experienced something similar?
While it's not the lens with sharpest corner, can't say I have noticed any real issues in my real world photos. I have a few photography videos that all or most photos were shot on the 20-60 like the one I did in Tokyo, I am pretty happy with the results
Hi brother Richard .i don't have any experience about the lenses and I am new youtuber .i plan to buy lumix s5 2x with lenses do you recommend ?20-60mm or 14-28mm.thank you for your advise .God bless you all. love your chanel.
Thank you Alex! i think 20-60 would be a great first lens it's quite versatile. So unless you would be mainly shooting ultra wide angle, i would suggest you get the 20-60 first.
Should I get the 24-105 to replace this lens? I looked at the Sigma 24-70 but its dust issue worries me and the sigma 28-70 doesn’t have as good weather sealing. I find myself shooting at 60mm on this lens a lot of the time.
Thank you Richard! Really good analysis at the end with Panasonic and the lenses. I do know Panasonic has mentioned they will make a more affordable Entry level full frame body so definitely spot on..
@@TheRealRichardWong hi yes! you can see a translated interview here. www.l-rumors.com/panasonic-confirms-they-will-launch-new-affordable-ff-cameras-but-still-insists-no-aps-c-l-mount-is-on-the-roadmap/
Actually that's a very interesting question! I think i would actually prefer the GH5 with the 10-25 as it is constant f/3.4 full frame equvalent in terms of low light performance (assume full frame is 2 stop better than GH5) But of course with the S cameras, you can also carry an additional fast prime like the 50 1.4 and that gives you low light performance that GH5 can't match.
i have this lens..do you feel on 20mm is a bit too wide appearance on both left and right? Meaning the edges make the object look more wider in width? This seems to appear only on the left and right when in 20mm focal length. 35mm on the lens seems fine. I love this lens and just wondering if you noticed this. I have another 20mm lens and it does not appear like this on. both left and right.
hi there, no i don't feel that at all. Maybe set the camera on a tripod (so don't move it) and take two photos using each of your lens and compare? Feel free to share the photos with me if you want me to have a look :)
Thanks for the review. I will give this lens a pass. This to me looks inferior to the excellent 24-105 ‚kit lens‘ which has a constant f4. I‘d like Panasonic to bring out fast and light FF primes. On another note: you are the only RUclipsr who seems to understand how Pana CAF works :-)
Hi Sheik, thank you for watching. If you want a constant aperture lens, the 24-105 definitely is more suitable! And don't worry, the light FF primes are coming out very soon! :)
how does it compare to the PL10-25? I know this may seem like an odd question at first glance but hear me out. I already have a G9, and want to get the PL10-25, but then S5 comes out. Here's the math: PL10-25 = USD1800 S5+20-60+45 = 2300. 2300-1800 = 500. This means, if the 20-60 is any bit as good as the 10-25, I'm getting the S5+45 for a mere 500. Bam!
Can't talk about the image quality as i haven't done side by side, both are great but i guess the 10-25 might be slightly better. And the 10-25 has much more solid construction and faster aperture (even if you add 2 stops to compensate the 4x sensor size difference). However, the 20-60 is not bad at all and for the price difference you listed.. it seems buying the S5 makes a lot more sense!
Thanks Richard, How would you say the Image sharpness is compared to the Lumix S 35mm F1.8? As I have the S5 with the 20 -60mm and recently bought a 35mm Prime and at 35mm I can't see any difference in Image quality? Can you? Thanks, Jeff
Hey Jeff , I think i havent done any direct comparison. But the biggest advantage with the 35mm lens is that it is 2 stops faster which would give you a huge benefit when shooting under low light and also give you a shallow dof look if you want.
Just gotmy first Lumix S5iiX 2 days ago with the kit lenses and ouf, I love it, I took several test shot with my Lumis S5iiX with 20-60mm vs my Nikon D800 24-70mm f/2.8 and ... well I think my images are sharper on my Lumix with a kit lense! :) @24-35-50mm
Having a hard time choosing between the 20-60 or 24-105 for video on S5. I understand the pros and cons of each in terms of size, constant aperture and focal length. I currently own the Sigma 28-70 F2.8 (got it as 1st lens) but AFC in video isn't so great. Either the Panasonic Zoom lens complements the Sigma or replaces it. What are your thoughts, anyone?
I don't understand why you have a set against kit lenses. If you buy a Canon EOS 1Dx Mark III, one of the kit lens options in Canon's premium 24-70 F2.8L. If you buy a cheaper camera, the kit lenses are cheaper too.
@@TheRealRichardWong when I take my lens for a filter thread and move it from left to right I feel that an internal tube is swaying a bit inside an external tube (sorry, I can't explayn more correct). Didn't you notice something like that?
