Quick, honest question: does the pressure to produce regular content ever put a strain on your friendship? You two are always great together and I love that we get photo and video coverage in your videos. I think the friendship dynamic is a real contributor to your work. Great content as usual!
I applaud the effort to get a focal range like this. I've been wanting something small to shoot at f8 (with flash or for landscape etc) and I've always been bothered by the classic midrange zooms cut off at 24mm, making you need and additional lens for wider than 24. 24-105mm, for example, has never been my ideal. I'd much rather have 20-85 and forego the UWA zoom. Rumored RF 17-75mm might just be the dream, but this looks one good to me too. The kind of thing that could be paired with 2 fast primes
It's a good move. With all the Megapixels nowadays it's easy to crop. So if you are after the Zoom portion of tele lenses you can overcome shortcomings to a certain extent. 24mm is always 24, nothing you can really do in post to make it wider.
I just realised you guys never did a proper review on the 10-25mm f1.7, when is it coming? I've had the lens for a few months now and even with a lot of high-end primes already in my kit, I find it hard to sell and let go of. Even with its size, it's just too damn convenient, great image quality and also because of the 20mm full-frame eq. wide-angle. I agree with a lot of other commenters, 20mm at the wide end should be the new zoom standard rather than the typical 24.
It came with my S5.. it's good, meets expectations fine.. with S5 ibis it's actually great in low light. If I need more, I shoot Sigma primes.. or my K-01 with limited 31mm.. I mean K1..
Nailed it; this lens is for their next generation full-frame. No motivation for anyone already owning the 'kit' zoom already available for S1 series. That said, come on, Lumix -- don't rely on Sigma for more L-mount primes; your lenses are great and we want MORE!
Does this 20-60 lens benefit from the linear focus ability when focusing manually? The 24mm Pany lens seems to offer this, even without a focusing clutch like the Pany S Pro 24-70. I find this allows for more accurate manual focusing, and even helps when using a follow focus system. Per the Pany 24mm: "Benefitting professional video applications, linear focus ring control for mechanical-based follow focus systems moves the focus at a constant speed in accordance with the rotating angle of the focus ring."
You focus REALLY close ;) From 20-28mm this can focus at like less than 1 inch from the lens, you can get tons of Toneh this way, and it looks great - but it quickly gets boring shooting small things up close like that. But it's well built, sharp, great colours, focuses great, it will get everyone who buys it hooked on native Panasonic lenses, which then costs a fortune and huge and heavy.
Sweet, I’ll get this with my future S5 and also get the 35mm f/1.8 as a fast prime. I love my G9 but it’s too big for what it is. I’ll be selling it to help fund the S5 purchase. I’ll still have my Olympus M5 III for micro four thirds but it’s time I went into full frame and Panasonic are making it affordable to do so unlike other brands with their expensive entry level bodies and lenses.
Please tell me anyone, which combo is used for making this review? I'm completely impressed with color science and details of this video. I'm very curious
I just wondered, after the launch of the S5, what are Chris thoughts about this lens with the S5? I am thinking of getting the S5 but on the fence whether to get this as a kit or go straight to a f2.8 lens in the L mount line up.
Ja they need to build a eosr clone with flippy screen but with ibis to. Basically a fullframe gh5 like the s1 was expected to be. I dont mind the s1 being big but the lack of a flipout screen kills it dor me. I will stay with my gh5 until another camera can give me what it has and more , without breaking the bank
@@andersistbesser. Agree. I feel they missed the mark with the L mount series. I shoot the GH5 professionally but was never tempted to the S cameras because there's too many misses, especially the screen. Would love to see the S1H screen though on future and more compact versions if possible.
Almost as if foreshadowing the lighter, more compact but still has IBIS Lumix S5 :) hmm as a kit lens too! I just got the S5 and want to try the new Lumix S 70mm-300mm....
Do you guys think that some of the softness wide open or the flare issues are caused in part by the more difficult to design for zoom range? Let's say, if there were a pro version of this that came in f2.8 for $2000, would it be just as nice as their 24-70?
how does it compare to the PL10-25? I know this may seem like an odd question at first glance but hear me out. I already have a G9, and want to get the PL10-25, but then S5 comes out. Here's the math: PL10-25 = USD1800 S5+20-60+45 = 2300. 2300-1800 = 500. This means, if the 20-60 is any bit as good as the 10-25, I'm getting the S5+45 for a mere 500. Bam!
The 16-35 is a terrific. Lens. I had that lens for about 3 weeks. Shot it on my Leica CL and Leica SL. Then around week four the lens suddenly died. Auto focus would not work on either camera. I reset each camera and no improvement. Luck of the draw a bad copy. I did not purchase a replacement after returning the lens.
best part about lens reviews is just getting out there to shoot. You can make a million excuses why you are too busy to go out any shoot any other time, but when you're lens reviewing.....that IS your excuse to get out. "I have to go shoot this lens review" lol. Lens is interesting for my S1H, not sure...I'm kind of eyeing up the 24-70 Sigma 2.8 L mount. Great video you guys!!
The S5 and kit, its what I have coming tomorrow. M43 is too limited for video due to poor low light performance and if you take photos full frame is the way to go.
To me, this looks like the perfect kit-lens for an FF-version of the GX9. That should have IBIS, around 24MP, good video features and be small, light and less expensive.
I'd love to see a similar focal range lens that is sharper than this for my S1R. If maybe it could be slightly larger and stay at 3.5 or 4, I'd happily pay twice as much. (though I don't know what is physically possible.. I'd be willing to give up a bit more on the tele end, so say 20-50)
@@tosvus I see.. What do you replaced it with? I'm thinking of getting s1 used and 50mm f1.4 pro myself. I miss leica M's 50 summilux and that's the closest rendering of an auto focus lens that I've seen to date. so it's either leica sl which much more expensive than the s1, or leica m. I don't want to go back to manual focusing again though, so gonna go with s1. Thinking of getting the 20-60mm for my casual walkaround and vlogging lens. Would the kit lens be sufficient you reckon? Thanks in advance
I find it strange, that MFT got the big one (10-25mm f1.7), and FF this small one. I really hope, MFT will get a smaller one as well ... maybe a 10-50mm f2.8-f4 or 10-40mm f2-f2.8.
The 10-25mm f1.7 is one of the sharpest lenses out there and the fastest zoom on the market. With a very challenging 20mp MFT sensor, it's impossible to make it smaller without losing IQ. This lens on FF would be much bigger.
@@HarryPowerColt I might not know enough about optics, but is there an actual physical reason, why an f2.8-zoom couldn't be as sharp? It sure is a very impressive lens, and I love, that MFT has an option like this. But even though I am very tempted, I prefer lighter gear.
@@GoMoreHike There is not a single lens that can do all these things even half decent. Birds and Landscapes are literally on the opposite side of what you need. Also if you only had the money to buy one lens, don't get an XT4. Get a cheaper body so you have more budget.
It's big and heavy only with the 24-105 on it. With this it should be very vlogable. Also it doesn't need an articulating screen. With your phone and the Lumix app your phone becomes the screen, and a much more convenient one too.
20-60 is more versatile than the traditional 24-70 IMO, it should be the new standard

Right on time. Just having my coffee-break here. Very nice pictures (and video) - greetings from Switzerland.
Hey Dpreview how about a video taking a look at how the L mount alliance system has evolved in 2020. Looking at the lens line up in 2020.

Awesome to see Panasonic doing something new unlike Nikon.
This is some of the best images I've ever seen from these reviews. I think this was built for the hybrid shooter. 20-60 screams RUclipsr. 👍
In fact if you look closely it has RUclips engraved on the barrel.
