Ive been on youtube, and doing video and film for a long time now, but over and over I would search for something and not be able to find a review on it, or that the video left out some important detail. I'm looking to change that by providing some interesting takes on gear, lenses, and filmmaking in general.

So many memories, snapshots, nights out, and youtube thumbnail images and B-roll have been captured with the Lumix G100. Budget Lumix Cameras for Filmmakers in 2024?
I waited on the G9-II. No fan,...no buy. Yep, the wait on the GH7 was WELL worth it!!
What type of RAW does GH7 shoots internally???
@@35mmdigitalcinema raw photos and Apple prores raw
It’s a solid camera.
Great, logical breakdown. Does your brother have a YT channel?
I waited until gh7 came out , the screen and the fan was what i wanted
Such a clear, clever elaboration... based on the real use-case experience. Who would need more. Now I know I can safely buy the G9ii, because when I'm the using 60 fps, it's in shorter takes, and when I do the longer takes (1-2 hours), I do it in 25 fps.
gh7 vs gh6 color test!
gh7 vs gh6 color test!
I'm kind of in the same boat. Bought the G9ii, have a GH6. Bought a GH7. And, now I'm wondering what I would prefer for a B-cam. I kind of like using M43 for some animal photography, so I think I'm keeping for that for now, but I have a hard time thinking of it as a GH6 replacement.
This is why I think lumix needs an APS-C camera. It's the perfect sweet spot between FF and MFT. Given the weight and size of the leica 10-25, I think there's an argument that both FF and MFT cameras depend on bulky lenses but for their own reasons. I think APS-C actually balances these two really well giving you a compact setup with good image quality, DR and DoF. I know sony does a whole APS-C range, but who wants to use a sony?
Yeah, it’s definitely hard for me to really except that. It makes a lot of sense in so many ways and it doesn’t make as much sense in others. I’d be very curious to see how they would go about it though… It’s definitely interesting to think about it the very least, even if I’m not sure if they would ever do it.
And your comments about parfocal confirmed what I have seen and tested on this pair of lenses. At the extremes focus gets a little soft, but in the center of the zoom range, this is truly a parfocal lens that I have not seen many others comment on. The combination of constant aperture and parfocal makes this a killer lens at a truly affordable price compared to other full parfocal lenses. Many complain about the price without realizing this fact.
I own both the 10-25 and 25-50 and have been using them on a GH6. I have had great auto focus on a RS3 Pro lidar equipped gimbal. The DJI software integrates GH6 focus control with the wheel on a Tilta pro ring. A great combination that we have used without the ring on a vehicle mounted camera. I recently purchased the lighter shorter 2.8 zoom the reduce the weight of the lens to the body. It will be interesting to test this combination with the improved autofocus on the GH7 I just purchased. We had to add a variable ND lens outdoors as the 10-25 can be too bright outdoors. Great overview, thanks for the ideas you brough up. Another GH7 body will be added soon for interview infomercial productions.
Thank you Rhett, very useful information.
Thank you Rhett! Fun cover photo!
Nice video. However, I find it hard to like the look of those 2X anamorphics. But you gotta admit, that's pretty much the ONLY thing in that price range, so for that it's commendable.
@@thatsreallyamoon it’s hit and miss for me, CA is horrible and close focus sucks but the bokeh is an aquired taste for me. If I could change one thing it would be them being sharper at T4 but yea 400 bucks for a 2x ano???
Deal breaker for me is only 1/500 shutter which is crazy for a camera being sold in 2024. I also don’t like how the view finder sticks out so far making it not pocketable.
@@jjchockey the first one isn’t the end of the world but it’s a limitation of the EFC shutter I think but the electronic shutter goes to like 1/16000 which is better than like the S5 1/8000
That SLR magic discount is insane!
It really is! These cameras have been full priced as far as I know at $2600 each for years and so to get one for like 400 bucks is insane indeed
dear god that slr magic price
@@dominicpclarke I’m actually mad no one told me haha I honestly created this entire video around those lenses since I knew there wouldn’t be time for a full video
@@RhettThompsonFilm Well you can still make a more detailed video later. I just ordered the 35mm from slr magic's site. thanks for making me broke! wanted that lens for ages.
@ dude 400 bucks for a 2x is bonkers but yeaaaa I hear you man haha definitely stay posted for a review in the future. And get some diopters!
@@RhettThompsonFilm will check that vid out. I already have some diopters for my other scopes. I use two tokina achromatics for my baby hypergonar setups.
1:48 I had headphones on, you made me look left with that surround trick lol. Thanks for the info.
Ope I didn’t mean to do that! Haha just wanted to get this video out on time
@ 😆 keep em coming
Thanks for the “head’s up”! Will definitely look for the cinematch plugin if it comes to sale.
Hi Rhett... Thx about this Info,if you had on SLR to pick up for music video (mostly classical and blues) which one would you pick?or 2 lens? I know you had the Vazen shootout which resulted in a great video... Thx in advance
So the two ways I used these lenses in the past were these combos. 1. The 50mm alone. It’s a great all rounder if you have the space. 2. The 35mm and the 70mm. Then you get a nice variety. The 35mm is maybe OK if you are willing to use diopters because the close focus is really far like 3 and a half feet I think so barely a medium shot

What camera and lens was this shot at?
@@LJLeeTV I typically shoot at my desk using the S5ii and lumix 35mm 1.8!
Your G85 seems to be the GX80/GX85. I have a G85, which is now 9 years old. When I bought it, I thought as an amateur I don’t ever see myself really ever advancing past this camera. I still feel that way.
Because I can carry spot lights in the rain at night
Good man
HI! G9 ii in B just because it overheats despite having all the specs of the gh7? are you crazy? Class A at least. I recorded with it in the summer for 2 hours continuously with a temperature of 28 degrees in 4k 60 p and the temperature light didn't even come on. You can do anything. Taking it out of class B immediately makes no sense, there is no proportionality. The S9 even if not professional has the specs of the s5 ii, you can't put it in C. It must be at least in B. And let's not joke. I agree with the Gh7 in S. On the other S1h that you put in S I have to trust, ok image quality, but with that poor autofocus of the previous lumix versions, I would say it can also stay in A. Maybe a new version with the new AF will certainly deserve the S class if they don't do stupid things.
g9ii..., feels like 5 years ago
I feel you bro
I still love my lumix tz/zs 100 its still great for travel & daily camera for social media
G90 would be my A tier. No other camera fits my hands so well for example.
Never got to have the pleasure of using one but you’ve got me interested!
@@RhettThompsonFilm The camera has a small set of niche features that I love. But otherwise I generally recommend the G9 or the G80 over it (if it's for video).
I love that the worst lens on DXOMark is a C 😂
The s9 was violated its like those S tier u put were B tier at most they are not arri alexa either
They're all great, but some are just a little better for their time. I think the most influential ones are the GH4 and the GX85, both having some of the most innovative features that are now on most cameras: ability to shoot 4k (GH4 was the first hybrid for this, and 4k with IBIS (the GX85 was the first for this). This was the golden age for Lumix. Amazingly, they have yet to release a GX85-style camera with a mic jack and PDAF, this would be the holy grail. Sold all my M43 stuff because it took them too long and moved to Lumix FF. I put $1000 back into my pocket, bought a S5 with vintage lenses to replace all my M43 stuff- better image, almost as portable, all the best features minus PDAF (but have a S5ii for that with AF lenses). Would like to add that the VX1 (and VX980/981) are the ONLY video camera that you can just hand ANYONE and they'll get decent footage and audio. They're not for critical evaluation of the image- only usability counts here.
felt a little bit harsh for my g92 missing the fan then dropped from A to B although I do use mine as a EDC camera for street and landscape photos ~~
@@huasheng9695 you may be right, honestly it was hard to put anything much lower than A since they all can be an A or S for someone! I think the fact it felt like a stop gap to me took it down a lot but yea it’s a great cam. I think I’ll have to make a video on why I moved on from it and why it’s a great camera
How do you find the om-1 vs the g9ii specifically for animal tracking? I have the 40-150 f2.8 and use it on Panasonic, but been looking for a second body.
Here is what I think: all, hydrid cameras are likely mid tier. Like most things in life, when you choose a compromise you don’t get the best of anything. There are great cameras for photographers and there are great cameras for folks who make video. If you want to do both you need two different tools. Red35 had a recent live stream on this very issue. Sure, some do ‘ good enough’ at both for an enthusiast or certainly someone with a hobby. I think LUMIX largely falls into here, good enough options for most (I own a lumix and quite like it).
You should have waited for a day of better inspiration for such a special synthesis... like, look what Emily did. This is not an ordinary video topic in a row, it's an arch, a look back over 10 years period of your most productive age. I'm sure there's a lot more experience and personal relationship with these cameras left unveiled under your skin.
It’s always a struggle with videos like this. If I waxed poetic for these cameras too much the video could easily go on for hours. Maybe it should have but it’s always a tough balance.
@@RhettThompsonFilm yes, but then you would be on your own ground. Great idea for the future! This looks like your own replay version of their ideas. I am not criticizing you, to the contrary. I know how much potential you have.
The video I review every single lumix camera ever made I’ll keep this in mind haha although that videos is gonna be feature length! I know you didn’t mean this to be unconstructive criticism and I take this to heart!
What are the Lumix S Tier Cameras for you>?
Just can’t do it, love the look of my GH6 still although the 7 is a fine camera.
@@Memory_Gatherers it pains me so haha I’m very glad I can have both because the GH6 color is sooo perfect
I had a GH3, a GH4, two GH5's and an AF100. Now I have two GH5 Mk2's and a GH6. All my cameras are equipped with Atomos Ninja V's but they also record a safety track internally.
I was a huge CapCut user and a few months ago I switched to Premiere and I am glad I did but I'm still struggling to do a lot of what I was already doing in CapCut. I learned that even though eventually the transition will be with it it's better to be comfortable with your editing program for me. Im not sure what is so much better about DR over PP but I already use a lot of the adobe photo stuff so I just prefer that workflow rather then another months on top of months of learning curve I guess is what I am saying.
@@BassDad yeah I just use some other other plug-ins and programs with Adobe that it’s difficult to move to something else just for video editing when my photo graphics and visual effects are all in my subscription. Glad to see you make the move tho! Meanwhile people keep telling me to try out CapCut haha
People need to look at m43 as the 16mm of the digital videography world. People are still shooting great stuff on 16mm celluloid and they’re choosing it for certain reasons. The same can be said for the m43 format.
Another RT tier list!?!? 🔥🎉
@@orange-you-later babe wake up, new tier list just dropped

Common man, the Olympus Big White lens (150-400 (500)) is the very essence of an S level lens. Nothing else like it by any manufacturer in any format. World class quality. And yes, completely niche. Love it or leave it. It’s the definition of your S level.
@@RobertSagan-p9f I agree haha it’s just so out of reach and so mystical I think I got scared. If I did this again I think I’d put it in S
very nice video. btw where did u get the music from at the very beginning
What’s the Dune look?
Excellent idea, Rhett, a relevant comparison. What would be even spicier one, is to compare the 10-25mm at 25mm with the 25-50mm at 25mm! Be the first one to do it :) I have Leica 25mm f1.4 and Olympus 25mm f1.8 and both are disappointing. Maybe I have a bad copy, or no affinity with this focal length in the first place. I’ll have to try them both in a controlled test environment to come up with a definite judgement.
@@Emerald_City_ haha I think I’ll have to and I know the perfect time to do it. I was also not super impressed by the aging Leica 25mm and haven’t tried the Olympus but I was rather impressed by the Lumix 25mm for how cheap it was. The Leica 10-25 remains one of the sharpest lenses for the system even including most primes. Really just outstanding in every way
I just purchased a S5ii. Bought the 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 lenses at the same time. I bought the 20-60 kit lens from MPB for $200. Inexpensive lens. Good carry around lens. A useful range of focal lengths. I would have Prefered the traditional 28-70 range. I do a little video and the wide end is useful for this application. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
