GH5 was and is a powerhouse! 4K24, 422, 10bit, 4k60, ibis, open gate… I’d still recommend the GH5 as the one to get if you’re on a budget and want to get the absolute most bang for your buck.
Crazy how much you can get for as low as 500-600 dollars today. Sure the IBIS and images from the newer cameras is better, but it isnt THAT much of a jump with simple things like lighting and composition which will make any camera look great.
Thanks that means a lot, I figured these guys could say it better than I could and they're the same for me so its always great to see them or work with them.
Thanks Rhett for making this homage for the GH cameras. I'm an award-wiinning filmmaker here in the UK and I still use the GH5 and GH5s for my films. For me the GH5s is incredible for my work. I can't wait to see the GH7. Alpaco hit the nail on the head with GH5s battery life, EVF over the BMPCC4K. I tested the GH6 once, its lovely but the battery life is awful and I told Lumix about it at a trade show this year here in London. My A Camera is GH5s, B Camera - GH5.
The GH5s will never leave my kit because of the low light and the lack of ibis for mounted shots. A one of a kind camera that hasn’t been replicated since. The GH5 and mkii also hold their own even with all the advancements and I don’t want people to forget about them! My favorite projects and footage I’ve ever got was shot on those things.
I've had every single GH-series camera from the GH4 and onwards apart from the GH5s ... (i do have a BGH-1 one though). Oh wait .. I STILL have all of them. And while I also shoot other brands, my GH5-II, BGH-1 and GH6 do still get used regularly.
@@RhettThompsonFilm You know, what the issue with the GH4 and GH5 is ? Once we moved to the updated menusystem (first one for me with that was the GH5-II), it's really hard to move back to the old one :) ... but that's really the only thing, that bugs me.
For video: A cam G9 often with P Leica 12-60 and B cam G80 often with Lumix 12-60. For photography: A cam with G9 and B cam GX9. Why two cameras photography? If you don’t want to switch lenses so often or use the GX9 for one specific use like quasi-macro and the G9 for the rest. I think my next camera might be a GH5 ii (?)
Sounds like a great photography setup! I liked the GH5ii for photos since it had some new features like the live view composite and other stuff like that.
Until last year I had the GH5M2, but this year I upgraded to the GH6 (I was attracted by the option to connect a hard disk, the ventilation and the rotation of the screen) and I bought a G9M2 more oriented to photography (but with the option to record video).
One of the benefit as are the deals. I got a g9 in december from amazon, 3 year warranty, new, $650 w kit 12-60. IDK what I want to do with it, but at that price it's almost a webcam level lol...
Never got to own the GH5. Shot all my early pro work with a GH4, then jumped to a GH6. And what I love about them both is that they still have the same feel and character, though I miss how tiny the GH4 feels compared to the GH6. They're both rugged. The GH4 (my B cam) really complements the GH6 (my A cam) a lot in my work! I don't really see a need to upgrade the GH6 very soon. It's too much of a powerhouse. Notwithstanding, I think the GH5 had a long influential reign as one of the best MFT cameras, perhaps due to the prolonged hiatus between its release and that of the GH6. For whatever reason, it's a very loved camera by many. It seemed to have a good bit of all the good stuff filmmakers needed. GH5 refurbished bodies still sell for a almost the price of a used GH6 here. They're that good and in demand compared with others in the Lumix MFT bunch. The GH6 lost value so fast, especially when the G9II came in. But I so much prefer the GH6 over the G9II. Moving to the G9II would oddly be a downgrade for me as a filmmaker compared to sticking to the GH6.
Hi Rhett, Great content you put here with my favorites RUclipsrs... Personally because I am in the middle between Black Magic and Panasonic love the P4K and P6K for image quality,OS hate them for the rest (actually gyrostab since last resolve update is working really great so). Pana GH5,5s S5 for ergo, battery life. S5 org image is really something close to BM kameras specially with the video assist 12 and Braw V log (except I got some strange Magenta Cast with Cinematch but easy to correct) But lately I want to travel light and the footage 10 bit 422 long GOP with 30 min limitation is really good...because I do mostly live event coverage I went the intervalometer road and I can record 2h15 until the battery dies with the S5 org...I got each time 10 second gap in the clip but in a multicam setup it is not critical... The intervalometer could be the road to go with 5.8K prores HQ (unfortunately the 2 TB SSD limit is a problem) for long shot at least for me the so Panasonic S5 is crippled from the start or with very conservative heat managment... For me to be on pair with S5iiX or S5ii a S5 with intervalometer for 20$ should do the job as B,C cam in interview
I go back to the GH5 and still consider myself a total amateur newb, but the more I look into Panasonic the more I think I need. The s1r/s1/s5 have one of the highest rated sensors by class... with no one similar in price range. s1h, etc., they are all excellent and the same. i haven't gotten myself to s5iix/pdaf, but the features on those are amazing... there's still so few cameras that even do usb-c output, let alone the new output to cloud???
It’s been tested by others and the S5ii has slightly more noise reduction and sharpness applied by default and the S5 original has a little less noise and a little better dynamic range.

what Alpaco and you say about is a complete IBIS non sense. I'd rather have ibis camera, because you can always deactivate it if needed, but a camera without ibis especially for M43 is dumb advice. Sure GH5s low light perform is a big asset, but the lack of Ibis makes it a very niche camera in m43 world, and the lack of it can not be define as an advantage in any regards.
This is not true. I have an example of the sway and jitter and that occurs with IBIS off or ON. The sensor just cannot be held in place for car mounts and other situations and there’s a reason nearly all cinema cameras forego IBIS. Look at the sample footage in the video I included!
Sure it's fine if you're using it handheld. But have you ever strapped it on a truck or jeep that's going off road? Even when it's OFF it shakes! Because you can't lock the sensor!
@@AlpacoFilms I agree, even in the footage I provided a car traveling well under 30 mph is swaying really badly and thats with IBIS on or off. Because of the fixed sensor I'll always keep the GH5s around.
Hi! You can’t deactivate the IBIS (it’s how the sensor is built.) I do agree that it’s super-duper important to have IBIS…unless you want intentional camera movement (ICM)…so that might be what Alpaco was referring to?
