I totally DIDN'T expect to care about the GH7 at all since I'm more photo oriented than video. But one of the things I loved most about the G9 was how it felt in the hand with bigger lenses and I think the GH7 resembles that feel more than the G9ii. Flip-up screen, locking dial, fan are also all appealing upgrades along with it finally having PDAF autofocus.
I only upgraded for the autofocus and ProRes raw. If autofocus or internal raw recording is not a main concern then the gh6 is perfectly fine 👍 Also, to note the gh6 can get Arri LogC3 software upgrade, if that’s something you’re considering to have

Do you know why after adding the phase focus into the same sensor but the latitude of gh7 and g9ii is increased by more than one stop? They use a larger latitude to replace the middle gray level on gh6, so the shiny and rich levels on gh6 are gone, and now the picture will appear flatter, less three-dimensional, and lose rich levels and transitions, that’s why the gh6 looks closer to film, while the gh7 or g9ii looks more digital. This is the essence of why many people were saying the color science of GH6 is better than GH7 or G9ii. And I believe the iso startup conditions of dynamic range boost was much lower for the same reason. If you really care about image quality, and mainly use manual focus or fixed camera position, have more lighting skills, and do not often work in scenes with extreme contrast (but in fact, the GH6 is enough for almost all scenes even without boost), then definitely go with the gh6. Otherwise, go with the gh7. It's a very simple choice.
I was going through a similar process... kinda. I also am not sold on full-frame. The only thing that kept me from going with a LUMIX GH camera was the lack of phase detect AF... as soon as the GH7 was announced it was immediate pre-order! I started off-loading my cameras and any support gear in preparation for the new ecosystem... I couldn't be more happier!
I actually sold my GH6 in anticipation of getting a GH7 but my G9II has been carrying the load just fine. I’m gonna wait a few months for the GH7 to go on sale around the holidays maybe
@@fansofER personally I’m not sure I can wait. The heat is scaring me for the long form recording and the GH6 is kissing LUTS and e stabilization for my baby (Leica 10-25) on the wide end. We will see though.
@@RhettThompsonFilm I haven’t run into a heat issue with my G9II yet but I’ve been shooting indoors. I might just be kidding myself about waiting on the GH7 however, it’s got everything I’ve ever wanted in a m43 cam and I prefer to have 2 bodies for redundancy. Having only one camera body is kind of scary if anything goes wrong
Same situation for me. I used the GH6 since it came out and now the G9-II. For me the most important features are the DR-Boost in low ISO, the better stabilization and the AF. The additional features in the GH7 are interesting but I wouldn't use them a lot. I don't need the heavy codecs and the faster CF-Express card is nice to have but not more. If I do a long recording of an event, I still can use the GH6 and the G9-II will be the perfect B-cam for the in between shots handhold. Since I also do a lot with the bicycle, size and weight is important for me. My decision is easy. The G9-II is better for my needs.
I prefer the GH6 for image quality, the colors out of this camera are just so good. I also have the G9II and I see no point to get the GH7 for me. The G9II is smaller, lighter and I know I will never use Proresraw because the files are really huge and it is limited to V-log only.
I have the GH6, wanted to see what LUMIX announced and it was just the S9, so I went ahead and bought a G9II. Shortly after the GH7 appeared.... Now I'm good for the moment because the G9II basically does all the things I missed in the GH6 and I don't really need the extra video things.

hahaahhaha you will buy a GH7 to replace your GH6 very soon, as you always did. :D The color of the Gh6 is not enough to compensate for all the advantages of the Gh7
The GH7 is worth the upgrade, I say just go for it. Just get a B&H Payboo CC with no sales tax and 0% finance for 12 months. That'll give you some time to sell your GH6 and do some jobs to pay off the difference.

It’s probably gonna be sooner than later, though I pick one up. August is going to be insanely busy with weddings and other shoots that I just need a rock, solid reliable camera and the most reliable camera series I’ve ever used has been the GH series.
Real time LUTs only feature I would like. I mostly use Vintage and MF/anamorphic lenses so AF on the GH6 has hardly ever been turned on. LUTs though useful. But I can live without feature. Maybe GH8 in 5 years or so may turn my head. I need to spend money on a more powerful rig cos my aging mac and even my reasonable ROG laptop struggle playing with 5.8k but heck there’s always proxies.
I’ve noticed very recently bad wobble on the GH6 on wide angles. And you talking about it just made me realise that. I should order a GH7…. It’s the only fix.. right.
Gh7 has twice the power in venus engine vs gh6. Can it show in image or video processing. When using proper processing like pureraw4 photos become 10 times better than my gh6 jpgs. If we would have enough power in video processor the small sensor video would be Stellar.

Hey Rhett, i think you should see (and listen) to your own video. because, if you do, you will find no real dilemma. you say that GH7 is a mix between S5ii /G9ii feature list & GH6 Body design & capabilities. you say the current full-frame bodies are limited by overheating and crop. You say the GH6 is limited by the lack of new feature list (AF /LUT / E-Stab) and you say the new GH7 got it all. We know for a fact that the FF body that will get it all as the GH7 did, will be the S1Hii which will cost around 2 GH7 bodies. Right now you’re holding two glass lines for the ff & for the M 4/3. My cheap advice is to sell the FF line and buy the GH7 (with the glass you’re selling, you’ll end up a rich man). My expensive advice to you is wait six months, sell the GH6 (and lenses) and buy GH7’s tween FF, the S1Hii.
This would be smarter but I still occasionally value full frame features still but as a daily and universal tool I just dont have that anymore as my workflow changed. Im having to choose often between my G9ii GH6 and S5ii depending on the project or even depending on different requirements in the same shoot or project which I really dont like. The GH7 could be that camera and yea I would certainly be selling some stuff to cover the cost a bit.
I just bought GH7 with 9mm Leica lens as my first camera. I can't stand how expensive, big and heavy full frame lenses are. It's absurd for hobbist to pay prices like that. Nikon Z6 price is also fen absurd.

I'm getting my second GH7 to replace my B cam GH6.

Yeah, I've been thinking about getting the GH7 too. I have a GH6, a GH5 Mk2, and two GH5s. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows.

How often do you use s5ii? Do you have an overheating with g9ii, if yes, in which mode, how long was the shoot?
I also think on m43 it's easier to get more "character" from footage. I want another m43 camera i miss my g9 and gx85
