  • Scratch building a Ryan’s Rebel stick style R/C airplane:
    Episode 8, Shaping out the leading edge
    Shaping the leading edge is… well… a tedious task that requires removing a lot of wood via carving, planing and sanding. I show you how I set up the reference lines to make a straight and nicely shaped leading edge over the 80 inch length of the Ryan’s Rebel wing.
    Tools used in this episode. Amazon Affiliate links
    amzn.to/36gTtI2 Master Airscrew Razor Plane
    amzn.to/2uaV8Rt Black & Decker hand sander. This one is fancier than mine, they must not make one without the gathering bin now.
    I looked for aluminum sanding blocks like I use in the video. They aren’t made any more, however a lot of modelers are buying aluminum T and square stock from Home Depot or other home improvement stores and cutting them to length. Adhesive sandpaper in rolls is quite available in many different grades.

    100 count, seems like a lot, but more is better when the project is big.
    amzn.to/374eXsJ Master Airscrew Balsa Stripper, make your own high quality sticks from common balsa sheets. One of the most valuable tools I use.

    16:45 ...unless you build some protection that puts a bit of padded fabric around the edges of your wing for transport. Won't help in a rougher landing, I agree. Using more sturdy balsa for that part still feels smart.

      WWI airplanes are beautiful machines. I have never built one, because I'm pretty sure I would become addicted to them, and the 9 kits I have stored up would be extremely jealous. But we will see, maybe someday. I love dawn patrols at the meets I go to.

    Arrived here in 2022; guess the beard has either taken over the face or it's down the sink! Hope you are getting the subs you need. In England we know the plane as a " David plane" guess you could also use a "spoke shave" used for rounding cart wheel spokes . But either way I admire your tenacity, I'm about to start a spitfires mk1 mentioned in another post on one of your other posts. Sadly I dont have either the space or the machinery you have but heh! One day... I'll be putting the wings o my "kite. Love your manner and thorough attitude. See you soon. Respect from Suffolk England.

    A neat and very inexpensive way to secure servo extensions without having to by those plastic things is to get bakers twine and lace the string through the individual wires and across the plug and tie a simple knot pulling tight ... clip the extra string ... found this by accident when rebuilding a scratch built I bought at swap meet.

      My buddy Mark uses dental floss the same way. I just happen to have the plastic kind laying around. I have never had servo connections come apart in flight.

      Glad I could help. Im always happy to hear from full scale pilots that enjoy RC. One of the greatest guys I have met in this hobby flew F-15s for the Air Force, and then King Airs in retirement.

    leading edge block ... just make an inverse block with the shape you want cut out of it ... attach sand paper to the indie of that and sand the leading edge until it fits all the way down .... a nice piece of pine from a 1x2 about 6 inches long would make a decent sized sanding block and set the leading edge nice and even the full length of the wing .... and it can be saved for wing replacements from damage in the future ...

    • @0623kaboom
      @0623kaboom 3 года назад

      you could also have adjusted the table of your skill saw to match the angle of the leading edge and trimmed off the corners in one shot going down the length of the piece on each side and then been ready for filler and sanding in a few minutes ...

    If you can find one on Ebay. Go for the Wil-Kro razor plane. Old school but way better than the master airscrew plane

    I really enjoy using a plane, shaving wood off like that. However, I do not care for the master airscrew plane; I have a metal plane of about the same size (which is in the Bermuda Triangle of my shop). I also have a slightly larger plane, called a David plane, which has 3 different slots for blades for various tasks. Good video Dan (and you know how I feel about beards)!

    Hi Dan: what type of putty do you use for filling in the imperfections?

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  3 года назад +1

      If its just a gouge or little dent, I will use Red Devil light weight (Im sure there are tons of other brands) spackle used to fill small holes in drywall. It dries quickly and is super easy to sand. Use a fine sandpaper. If I am filling a low spot, I use this stuff called 3m Green Akril putty. It is a one part putty that is used for Automotive body work. It dries fairly quickly, and the trick is to fill the low spot, but don't leave a big pile to sand down. Get it as close to level as you can with a teflon paddle. This stuff dries pretty hard so when you have to finish sand it, use a coarse sandpaper, and use less strokes to finish it. Using a finer paper will more or less buff the glob and possibly grind down on wood around the spot, creating more issues. Be cautious.

    Hello Dan, I discovered your thread on the LA-7 build at RCScaleBuilders. Do you still have this plane? If so, it sure would be neat to have you do a video of it. I am in the process of building this Dave Andersen plan at 125%.

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  4 года назад +2

      Actually the build I did was for the plug to make a mold. I made the plug so my friend Vic could manufacture fiberglass fuses. He gave me a finished fuse for building that plug. Another friend of mine John Gains is putting it together for me as we speak. If you look in that same forum of RCSB, you will see his progress. Eventually I will do the final assembly and paint on it. 125%? Holy schnikies!!!! Thats going to be awesome. Anderson has a thing for large planes. I just got a notice that John Gains' Gruman Lynx won the RCSB scale plane of the month. I had the honor to hold and spot that plane a few times. It is a beauty... And Big. Thanks for checking out my building video.

      Dan Gellner right after I sent this comment I realized you were building the plug 🤦🏻‍♂️. I’ll take a look at John’s progress. Really enjoy the content. Keep it up!! It’s a nice way to pass the time as we wait for warm weather here in North East Wisconsin.

      They are available from Amazon. There is a link in the description of this video. If that doesnt work for you search for Master Magnetics CA41LWHX100 its a 100 set. They also have a 24 set but you will find you need more.

    having had a beard pretty much all my life ... first decide if every 28 days you dont mind your chin being itchy as the beard grows ... and if you plan on keeping it combed out 5 or 6 times a day ... after that what you grow doesnt matter ..... most people get absolutely nuts when they find out their beard grows every 28 days and is itchy while it does ... and they tend to think trimming and shaving keeps it looked after ... that just tidies up the edges ... COMB IT removes grime .. keeps the hairs growing in the direction you want the beard to fill out in and massages the skin lessening the amount they itchy when growing .... yes except for 10 years in military service I have had a beard since i was 14 ... im almost 57 now .... so yes I know what I am talking about
