Balsa USA Stingray with DLE-20, RC Plane Build N0 6: Shaping Leading Edge, Rib Caps, Wing Sheeting

  • Welcome to my build series of the Balsa USA Stingray RC plane kit. The Stingray 120 is a great trainer and sport rc plane with an 83-inch wingspan and powered by a DLE-20 RC gas rc plane engine. I will be using a Futaba transmitter system with with Futaba or Hitec servos and receiver. This plane is designed for .80 to .90 2-stroke glow engines, .90 to 1.20 4-stroke glow engines, and 15cc to 30cc gas engines.
    In this video I install and shape the leading edge of the wing, attach the rib cap strips, put sheeting on the center section of the wing, and prepare the wing tip end plates for later installation.
    All of these videos will be placed on a playlist.
    I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques when building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do.

    I have found a number 26 blade works very well for rough carving of balsa.

    J utilise la colle a bois " Ponal " je la trouve très bien mais j'ai peu d expérience en modélisme.
    Et pour coller deux pièces plates entre elles avec de la colle a bois j utilise des sachets plastique remplis de sucre en poudre de 750 grammes. Vos pièces épouseront parfaitement la table.

      Thanks! Im not familiar with Ponal wood glue, but sound like it works well. Good suggestion with the sugar bags. Some people use sand bags also. I need to try it.

    I probably would have used a slow cure CA for those tip pieces, but epoxy would have been overkill, and heavier. I happen to be quite satisfied with titebond myself, and use it for most of my building. CA and epoxy both have their place, and we use them when and where appropriate.
    It’s looking great James! I’m eagerly awaiting the video.

      Thanks, I wasn’t happy with my PVA choice. I should’ve known better. If doing it again, prob epoxy would be my choice as well.

      For those tip pieces, I think a thick CA would have been ideal. However, you fixed it as a true modeler would. Honestly, for those that might be learning from your videos, it was a good lesson in what not to do, and if you do it, here’s how to fix it.

    Do You ever use Ca kicker? A spritz and Ca is set

      I haven’t, but I did buy some recently from starbond and will use it in the future. I know its been around forever. I think for me up until more recently I would build smaller planes and primarily thin CA, since I have been building larger planes I use a lot more of the thicker CAs and should start using a kicker.

      Hi, I don't know anything about electric. But I''m sure you can do it. I'd check to see if there is info on some of the forums. The power would have to be equivalent to 20 - 30cc gas, 1.20 ~ 2.0 4-Cyl Glow Fuel. I'm sure it has been done. Sorry I can't be of more help.

      Actually I found one on RUclips . Type in “Balsa USA Stingray 120 Maiden Flight” and there is a guy that has it with an electric motor.

    Poor choice in glues epoxy resin the only thing to use here and I see a yellow glue too ,this dark yellow glue is rubbish it doesn't last ,it delaminates from the timber eventually, west system epoxy resin brother to brother rc buddy

      Thanks for the suggestion. I agree, generally can’t go wrong using an epoxy. Sometimes the convenience of a simple wood glue is not the best choice. It worked fine for my leading edge here, but was not the best choice for the wingtip plates. Thanks I always appreciate a good suggestion and insight.
