RC Plane Tech

Добавлен 6 апр 2020
Welcome to RC Plane Tech, my channel dedicated to building, flying, crashing, repairing, and modifying Radio Control Planes.
I started this channel in 2020. I thought I’d share some things I do in the RC Plane hobby including building RC Plane Kits, new and vintage kits, ARF planes, RC plane engines, radio controls, and yes - FLYING RC Planes and providing maintenance, repairs and modifications to RC Planes.
I’m hoping to share some flight videos and other RC Plane subject videos like building techniques, flying, crashes, repairing, working with engines, such as OS Engines and Saito glow engines, and DLE gas engines, and who knows maybe electric and turbine rc motors some day. I will also be expanding into rc sailplanes or gliders, and stick and tissue rubber band powered balsa plane kits.
I'm not an “expert” but I have been building and tinkering with things my entire life that and maybe I can share what I know and also learn from others along the way.
I welcome comments and tips.

Balsa USA Stingray with DLE-20, RC Plane Build N0 35: Canopy and Pilot
Welcome to my build series of the Balsa USA Stingray RC plane kit. The Stingray 120 is a great trainer and sport rc plane with an 83-inch wingspan and powered by a DLE-20 RC gas rc plane engine. I will be using a Futaba transmitter system with Futaba or Hitec servos and receiver. This plane is designed for .80 to .90 2-stroke glow engines, .90 to 1.20 4-stroke glow engines, and 15cc to 30cc gas engines. I will be using basic techniques of building rc plane balsa kits (or at least the techniques I have learned to build rc planes).
All of these videos are on a playlist.
In this video I install my custom canopy and Williams Brothers RC pilot figure.

This is Part 3 of my series where I repair my RC plane that I crashed. After repairing my plane, it's time for the post crash maiden flight. The plane flew great, except that I had a dead stick, so I limped the plane back to the ground, and luckily had a soft landing on the grass. Other than that, I had several fun flights with the repaired plane. I have been building, flying, crashing, modifyi...

Nice job
Top job james looks perfect mate ,just spot on 🤙🤙🤙
Almost there. Looking forward to seeing it fly and getting the first flight report.
That looks great 😉👌 I would be tempted to put some black covering on the bottom of that canopy so you can't see through into the Fuz.
Nice looking James. Great job. You could use low tac painters tape to hold the glue edges down. John from Hayden Idaho.
Nice job, some 1/4” blue edge trim tape on the canopy edges will blend the the canopy the fuselage.
Thanks,, I don't like using the screws tho. Just my preference,
I think the screw idea is just fine, I've used small screws around the canopy for design effect
You're in your final steps, great job James
That dried up really nice .
Shes Coming Along Nicely James! Happy Modeling!
James, I don’t know if you see posts from old videos, but because of you and this little plane, I had been on the search for one for a while now. I finally scored one and I can’t wait to watch your build series again and build this little plane. I have a 25fp waiting too
Yes, I do get all comments. Good for you scoring one of these kits. Thats awesome. One thing to look at is that because the kit is so old, I found some of the plywood parts delaminated, so I soaked a few with thin CA as I came across them to keep them laminated. The FP 25 is also great! Good luck with the build! Thanks for sharing the comments!
Thanks for the feedback James. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for delaminated ply. I’m tempted to trace the original parts out and scratch build one, and keep the original parts in the box. Then I could potentially have two!
yes we start flying as kids then we grow up and we abandon everything becuase of work and family and than we buy back the exact first model and we are kids againg but with adult money
Sorry for the loss of ya smoothy james ,im enjoying your channel content have learnt alot from your build series, keep em coming Nat here in Ireland 🤙🤙🤙
I drill little hole & feel it with lead shavings it works really good.
My name is Ray Warren in 1967 I got an Areomaster biplane kit for Christmas. I had just gradùated high school, I my plane stored for the four years I was in the Navy. After I got out I wzs married, kids on the way, life happened. L am now 75 years old and my plane has never been out of its box. Few people now days dont care for the old kits. I would like sell it to someoñe who would care for it as much as I have. Sorry about your plane a kit aways becomès a part of you.
Hi James nice building mate are the balsa usa kits easy enough to build,i just purchased the phaeton ll bi plane for xmas 😊will be 4 th build thanks Nathan, Dublin Ireland
Thanks! This is my second BUSA, and it goes to together well. Their instructions on the two so far are pretty good, there are a few things here and there they could explain better. If you have built a few kits , the BUSA shouldn’t be bad. I have only built the Stingray and the Smoothie, I don’t know how their more detailed plans build, like their scale WW1 bipes. But I imagine they aren’t too bad. I just take my time and read, re-read instructions. And if I had questions, I found that since these kits have been around a long time, you can find older forums with build logs or just posts about building the kit you have. You can do it😀
Hi James, just on section 22 min or there about regarding elevator,im building a spacewalker and it has a bent u shape wire to connect the 2 elevators together any thought on this ,i might just use your desigh i think
I’d go with the kit instructions. Use a slow epoxy, like 15 or 30 min, and you can also reinforce with some fiberglass cloth wrapped over the wire on to the wood. Without knowing the kit I wouldn’t know whats better, dowel or wire, but the kit designers should generally know best, in my opinion.
@JamesRCPlaneTech Thanks for replying James,I think I'll just reinforce with Dowl two make sure bothe elevator ends are secured, don't need flutter hey , thanks mate safe flights 🤙🤙🤙
According to the DLE20RA manual, one is suppose to remove the carburetor throttle spring. It is suppose to reduce stress on the servo. I can see why you should and I can also see why you would not. Did you? Thanks for the video, I am building my first Gasser and finding your videos very informative.
Hi, yes I removed it because if you don’t your servo will have to work against it in both directions. So your servo will be under constant strain. I don’t think you have to remove it, but I prefer to.
And Thanks!
@@JamesRCPlaneTech I just found out something. If I put my Choke on channel 5 or 7 or 8 (channel 6 is to opto switch) and Stabilization is on, the choke will move as the plane moves, stabilizing in other words. I assume the opto is doing the same. Have to figure out how to turn Stab off for the channels.
what is the speed
Up to 17,000 rpm per manufacturer, but usually less. Depending on fuel mixture, prop size, and atmosphere, the rpm is around 12,000 or so for me.
@JamesRCPlaneTech Is it possible to reach 2000 rpm, or will the engine drop?
@@JamesRCPlaneTechwe used a 9x7 prop for it but boom it's perfect
i found some really nice covering better than that ultrakote on horizon its on value hobby for $15 a roll very statisfed with it!
Nice, Ill check it out, Value Hobby?
@@JamesRCPlaneTech Yes sir Value Hobby! they also have 76 inch tiger low wing arf for $200 you would probaly like im fixing to order it.
Fantastic job , love it . Please do more so we can pick up on the hints and tricks . Cheers Andrew.
Thanks! Its a nice change of pace.
Since you would be getting into these compartments quite regularly I believe using small alnico magnets might be better instead of screws. Maybe?
Yep, good option. I use Magnets at times as well. The reason I didn’t here, is because each hatch is flush, or an insert, and I felt it would be hard to pry them open, those mags are strong. I did use mags on the canopy because I can pull it off.
Great job, I appreciate the products from that company and feel sad that they are out of business. I am more interested in the guns and other accessories than pilots. Painting is not my skill set and don’t have the patience for this so will opt for a pre-painted one or 3D printed one. In fact, I find I usually go with non pilots like Mickey Mouse in the cockpit or my most recent plane I put a Mandolin and Grogu in the cockpit
Haha, pilots are pilots! All fun
Thanks!
Brilliant job. Well done.
FYI bloody nice work mate 🤙🤙🤙🤙
Thanks! Its a fun change from wood
Thanks James my local shop has 1 and 1 only and it's this bloke I'm going to get him for my spacewalker I'm building, I'm calling him pilot Bob 😂
Nice!!
Cant wait to see the final project james! im currently fixing to build arf just ordered all the parts for it and then im gonna build eith the 61 escapade from great planes or the sig 4 star 54.
Thanks! Its almost done. Those are great plane options, really good. Sig or Great Planes are high quality.
😊😊😊...I would agree...I only use "Williams brothers " pilot figures in my planes...I paint them in the likeness of myself using different hats and shirts that I have....I used mostly the "Sportsman " version and paint the glasses to match my Sunglasses....Too bad we can't post pics here, I would post a pic of "Mr. Big Hat"....Started out life in a "Patty Wagstaff" Extra 300s, then a Yak-55, now a 1.20 Sukhoi...
Thants awesome!
@@JamesRCPlaneTech ....Thanks a bunch...👍👍😊😊
i really enjoyed tagging along and watching you build this kit from scratch! Its gonna come out really nice!
Thanks!, almost done, thank goodness 😊
Are you stupid? Or just bit slow?
Well done. Looks like the fuel system is very high quality components. Unfortunately I am only flying electric these days. Perhaps someday.
Thanks! It’s all good, no matter what you fly!
I think you did a great job on this plane!! Even Boeing or Airbus probably don't get everything perfect!! No human can.....
Ha ha! Thanks!
I enjoy your videos and am glad you're still making them, I have a few kits my grandpa left me after passing and am so nervous to get into the hobby, the information is harder to obtain than other hobbies but am hopeful I can make it all work! Also, my grandma is in the process of dismantling my grandfathers basement which is full of planes and parts of every size type and age, and more tools and plane supplies than one could imagine hahah, if you are interested, we want these to go to a person who will put them to good use! she also wants to be able to get fair market value for them but is completely unsure of what is what and what it might be worth, I would love to pick your brain about it. thanks!
Awesome that you have some kits from your grandpa, Im sure he would be pleased that you build them, and even if you ding them up a bit, we have all been there. I think I have enough tools, probably to many, but Im sure you can sell them on ebay. The nice thing about ebay is you can see the condition and model tools listed which helps you decide the price. You can always as a little more, put out for sale, and if no one bites, you can just lower the price.
Thanks! I'm pretty sure you want the blade parallel where it comes out of the plane. Your comment about woodworkers preferring that angle is I think about how you hold the plane when you're shaving with it - rotate your wrist a bit before sliding along your workpiece as though the plane is skidding a bit. The replacement blades on the Master Airscrew look to my eye like a fairly common blade used in matte cutters (used for matting images when framing). So probabyl not proprietary (but certainly not as cheap as the disposable shaving razors).
Thanks, and yes I found that the blades have a model number on them, and you can get them cheeper from other sellers. About the planer, I also have a few for woodworking, and they have a lever that allows you to angle the blade. You are correct, you can just angle it with the way you hold it regardless of. All good, thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. I built mine right along with you. 😊
Thanks! Getting closer!
Way to far from the engine
I hope not. I read an older forum where the builder put his tank right on the center of balance, and the manual suggests that if running the heavier DLE 20 to shift the tank back into the compartment above the wing. Let’s hope it works out. Thanks
A small dab of oil will help putting the tubing on the tank nipples. Also thanks for using the proper terms in this build. Like tubing instead of piping. Tubing is measured from the I.D. And pipe is measured by its O.D.. And try to refer to the entrances to the gas tank as nipples. Enuf critical. Carry on. I can’t wait!
Thanks!
I appreciate it!
There is something exciting about the inside of the balsa "technical room" in the rc planes, is it not? Very nice detailed video. The vent hose could have had an pitot tube for scale, maybe?, but may be this is not that scale a plane. Anyway, i enjoy your videos!
Thanks! And ya, great idea for a scale build.
Drop the ends of the fuel line in boiling water to soften them up. Makes for easy install and good seal.
Awesome tip, getting a lot of good ideas. Thanks!
or you can use good ole vaseline
You're a good modeler man. Your attention to detail and ability to explain your technique go nicely hand in hand. Very easy to watch. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Grt vid gas intro. I'm about to venture into gas with an Evo 15cc gas into a HK Zlin 50 (ws 68) I think you an use the heat gun sparingly on the Tygon jst to make plyable over the fittings. Tks again
Thanks!, good luck with your engines as well.
Nah - he’s just a communist POS. I blame poor parenting - his father was a bisexual flimp, his mother was a bipolar slut… good kids don’t come from parents like that.
I just use a little 2 stroke oil on the fuel tank, and the fuel tube slides on a little easier.
Silicone spray the nipples - hose will slide on, makes it easier
Nice, I will try to keep that in mind next time . Thanks!
Ottima lezione sulla differenza dei carburanti e la configurazione , è molto utile grazie
