  • Scratch building a Ryan’s Rebel stick style R/C airplane:
    Episode 14, A little review of my building bench. While I clear the bench to start working on the second part of the tail feathers, I'll show you around a little. This bench has birthed a lot of planes and a lot.of repairs as well. I had a viewer ask about the magnet building system I use, and I hope I answer some of your questions you may have. It's a great system that I feel makes my work faster and straighter built.

    amzn.to/2vmW0Db 15 minute epoxy. Use for sticking stuff together, firewalls, landing gear plates, hardwood parts. Can be used with fiberglass, but you’re not going to like it. Not sandable.

    I'm getting ready to build a new island in my barn. Nice bench! I'll have to steal some of your ideas. I like the dust collection.

      I just used that dust collector a few weeks ago when I was sanding down some fiberglass I had just put on a set of floats. The collector is nothing more than a five sided box with the open side made to fit a furnace intake filter cartridge and a bathroom vent fan passing through one of the other sides to create the vacuum through the filter box. You can determine how big the box is by picking the filter size. Go to the local hardware store and find a common size. It works very well.

      @Capgains7777 oh yeah. I was sanding on a airplane a few weeks ago. I left the barn and came back 5 minutes later and you could still see balsa flying in the air!

    I'm just getting back in to the hobby after a decade off. Building vicariously through your videos. Love the magnet board idea. I'll be hitting up my local HVAC shop to see what I can pick up.

    Very cool table; the glass top certainly ensures a flat building surface.

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  2 года назад

      Yes it does provide a nice base that is easy to clean, even if you drop epoxy on it. Just pries up with a razor. Additionally you can temporarily put a foam board or in my case with the magnets, a pies of sheet metal on it to remain flat. Thanks for the comment!!!!

    Dan i have been racking my brain to do a build table, this is genius. thanks for the magnet top idea. I have used regular doors and the have worked ok, but the glass door added is awesome. thanks again.

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  4 года назад

      Douglas, if they dont have an old glass door available you can use a regular sheet of glass. The door just came in handy because it was available, and if you ever have to move its a nice stiff assembly that comes off with very little flexing.

    Dan, I just use a 20" box fan with a 20" air filter taped to the suction side of the fan. Works great. I use it on low fan speed. Draws in a lot of dust.

    Dan, I use magnets too. Found lots of little doo-dads (technical term) on Thingiverse and other places on the internet.
    www.thingiverse.com/thing:3908192
    Scroll through all of the pics. I had a bunch of these printed up and use them all the time. Particularly the little 4 way hold downs are helpful when laying out stabs and control surfaces. Ordered 100 of the little 10x20 magnets and glued them on. I use the door latch magnets too, but then can be a pain to move sometimes.

    Dan I like your videos. I've been looking for these plans for a white and I must have looked over where you said the place to get these plans. If you would tell me which video it's on. Keep the videos coming. Thanks Steve

      The place to download the plan files is in the description notes in every episode. However if you can't see those notes, in EP 25, regarding common questions I put it on the screen so you can pause and write it down. Aerofred.com is a plan site you need to register for free... Search for Ryan's Rebel plans... And down load them and the article from RCM. They were all free to download when I did it two years ago. Then take the file to a print shop... In my case Staples and have them print the pdfs. Good luck to ya!!!

    acetone on a rag wipe down the glass and remove all the crazy glue at one time ... also if you add 2 to 4 tube florescent lights under the glass you now also have a light table best for tracing templates off of a master plan so you dont have to put holes in or marks ON your master plan

    Is it hollow or solid core for the door? Finally got a house so I’m looking to finally build a table

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  9 месяцев назад +1

      You can use either, the solid core will be more resistant from heavy stuff hitting it. I recently employed a metal skinned door so I can use my magnet building system on it.

    i want to make bench for making balsa kits. kindly suggest me wood for using, on the top of table which is soft as well hard for inserting Tpins

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  2 года назад

      If you want to use T pins for building for the top surface you could use Ceiling Panels which maybe too soft, gypsum drywall, which may be too hard, or a wall board called Homasote which is an insulation board and is just about right for softness to hardness. As for the bench, you might want to consider having a hard flat table, and the laying a sheet of the building board that matches the size to lay over the surface while you build over the plans. Then later take it off lean it against a wall when you are into the construction that doesn’t require building over the plans. That way you won’t ding up or spill glues on your building board.

    what’s spacing on the table frame to support the door and size of the door

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  4 года назад +1

      Wow I built this about 16 years ago, so I had to go look. The under frame is just 2x4s that run under the edges of the door exactly, there are no cross supports because the door is a solid core door, and doesn't flex. The door size is 84"x32" and 2 inches thick. It's heavy... in fact the whole table is pretty heavy. I've moved it 3 times, can't say it was enjoyable. The last upgrade I made to it was to make all of the wheels swivel type. Makes it a lot easier to move and reposition. Better handling if you are in a table racing league as well. :D

    Hey Dan excellent video buddy. I am intrested in getting a set like yours. Currently building an Astro hog by Sig.

    • @Capgains7777
      @Capgains7777  4 года назад +1

      The Sig Astro Hog is an Uber classic. I never built one myself, but a few of my friends have and they loved them. Great flyer. Sig kits and designs are hard to beat. I just stopped in to see Bruce Tharpe a few weeks ago, he was the designer on several of their plans. Good luck with your project.
