- Had a charging light on the GT 235 with an 18 HP Briggs & Stratton engine for the past many years. Finally broke down and tried to diagnose the issue.
Voltage regulator ended up being bad. Charging voltage prior to change was 12.5 V or so, and after change 13.7 Volts.

Excellent! Thank you for that! I have an old GT245 that has had the yellow light going for years and I have been trickle charging it to keep it going. Now I can fix the damned thing!
Just get a good one! I probably have to get another one here soon.
@@OutdoorsEngineer I just found an original one from local JD so should be good.
Thanks! This helped me a lot. The double yellow connector on my regulator wasn't even plugged in, even worse the stator plug was missing. I had to take the fly wheel off to find it. It was tucked away in the completely wrong place by some idiot before me. I got the stator plug back in the right place and everything was testing good, maybe even a little too high 14.15v at full throttle, but that should be in acceptable limits. I had to replace my PTO clutch and got an Xtreme Outdoor that people say is pretty good. I was following their fairly in-depth instructions to test your electrical system before installing the clutch, so you don't wreck it right away. My GT235 mows again! Thanks again for the video.
I am glad I could help!
I had a 2005 GX345 that it's light was on all the time, BUT the Charging Ckt was totally fine so I just put a piece of tape over the Lamp..

Quick question... What wire actually charges the battery.. And how? I have just the red starter wire on my battery (+). Does it charge the battery through that? I just recently purchased a gt235 and it cut great. But lately the battery has been stone dead. I can boost it and cut the grass, but if I shut it off its dead. Thy battery is from 2019 and I have no charging light on my dash, lighting up.
I don't remember which battery it is. I had that issue prior to replacing the regulator. After a while, the battery would go dead, because the regulator was not allowing the battery to charge.
@@OutdoorsEngineer turns out the previous owner took the charge bulb out. I replaced the regulator and the light is still on
Watch the ones you buy on Amazon or ebay you need to check to make sire that they are wired up the same some of them have different wire colors and they are wired up differently so make sure it's the same
Thanks for the Tip!
My red light is on my gt235. My post are round the one that was sold to use has square post. Why is that?
Different engine possibly?
Did this cause the engine to die down when engaging the blades?
Our GT 235 has always done this. There is a lot of mass to get started when engaging. I always push the choke just a bit when engaging the blades and that helps keep the engine RPM up and keep it running.
I got the same machine with the same engine strangely enough mine only charges when the battery light on the dash is on makes no sense and I haven’t figured it out
Good old machines. I did have the main ground wire from battery to engine block come loosegiving me a charging light as well. Tightened it up and all good.
Oh yeah I wouldn’t trade this for a new one any day hell no I never even thought of that. Thank you very much. I’ll give that a shot and see what happens. Appreciate it.👍
Headlight switch was on
Thanks - Where did you source your replacement regulator/rectifier ?
I purchased on Amazon. Just a simple regulator. www.amazon.com/dp/B07PN4VNX4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_sG8GZoVAFIYTT
@@OutdoorsEngineer Thank you for this video and for the link. I was experiencing the exact same thing and had just checked my regulator output reading 12.4V. Watched the video, ordered the part and replaced in 1.5 days.
