      Social pressure, cause if you are not masculine, you are feminine, nerd, weak and gay or smth.

      There's a scene in one of Henry Jaglom's movies where Orson Welles talks about how the big failure in men's dialogue (and this was the late 70's/early 80's) was not realizing that feminism freed EVERYBODY from the tyranny of gender stereotypes and freed them up to figure this stuff out for themselves. Make their own rules. But here we are forty years later and guys like this are still wandering around in the dark, blindfolded, confused and angry because they keep running into the same wall when the door is wide open behind him.

    I find that most women I've played with are more creative and try to approach the game from different angles than just attacking. It makes for more interesting game play.
    On one occasion, my party approached a spirit from another plane who was teraforming the forest to match its home. The guys wanted to kill it, but one of our female players talked to it and found out it was scared and wanted to go home. They eventually managed to fuse the spirit with their unborn child so it could live on earth without accidentally hurting anyone through teraforming. It was easily one of the wildest nights we had playing the game.

      Fun fact, this is why women most often are a great addition to combat units in the army!
      It’s not only the women who thinks more creatively, but it also makes the guys do the same!
      When I was in the Army, I also had very similar experiences.
      In my neighbour country, they did some very interesting studies on how combat groups approached various tasks, and it turned out that in the mixed gender units, they were far better at coming up with solutions that wasn’t basically just a frontal assault!
      In male only units, the guys would basically push each others buttons to show "machismo", and taking steps to avoid combat was far less preferred unless it was clearly stated that it should be avoided at all cost!
      So male only units were far more prone to seek confrontation also when it wasn’t necessary to fulfil the mission - and having mixed groups made everyone better and far more creative in how to solve the objectives!

    So glad my dad wasn't like this. I consider myself enby, but I'm AFAB and my dad knew me as a woman before his death in 2019. He was the one who got me into D&D and Magic: The Gathering.
    From the young age of about 7 years old, he helped me make my own decks and took me to MTG tournaments with him. My proudest moment was winning against a grown man as an 8 year old child. Didn't come close to winning the tournament or anything (my dad usually took 1st place), but it felt really good at the time. And the dude was a great sport about it and everything! But that was before all this culture war bullshit.
    He used to set up little solo adventures in D&D 1st Edition for me to play, rebalancing everything so my character could take on everything myself and making sure I got all kinds of cool items. He encouraged me to try different approaches to solving the obstacles he put in my character's way. He tailored the experience for me to have the most fun, and I look back on those moments so fondly. He just wanted me to be into the same nerdy stuff that he was. One day I'll join a proper D&D group, and I'll be thinking about him and what a great dad he was.

It's true the GM was expected to arbitrate on rules edge cases, and had a form of moral authority seing the GM is usually the one who puts the more work in the game, the one who organised the session and, let's be honest, talked every one into playing in the first place 😅
      Recently much more participative playstyles are trending, with session 0, voting on litigious rules, improvisation... It brings much more creativity at the table and it's liberating as a GM.

    oh yeah, this "men are lonely" thing. I recently went on Bumble because I heard that they had a 'friends' category, you know, for finding platonic friendships near you.
    So far, I have found 1 man and 3 enbies. it took like...5 days to find a guy. Curious considering I'm pretty sure that men significantly outnumber enbies. So then, why is the friend finding thing have 99% women if the mens are so so lonely? Especially considering how many of the women I find state their reason for being there as "I have no idea how to find friends and I'm lonely...let's go out for mimosas and visit museums!"
    Are the men even trying? I had been wondering if it was hiding them from me. Sure, bumble has a thing where the woman has to message first, but that's only for het pairings. currently, the only reason men can't use it to find friends is because no men are using it. I don't know, but it seems to me that if men are disproportionately lonely compared to women, its probably their fault (or at least men's fault collectively). Like the reason women _aren't_ as lonely might be because woman are more willing to put forth an effort into fixing their loneliness problem.

    • @Puzzles-Pins
      @Puzzles-Pins 8 месяцев назад +3

      Bad take. It's more complicated than that. The toxic incels and other rot only make it worse by feeding into it. But the problem is how men tend to be socialized, the expectations and pressures for how they behave and interact. Emotional openness and intimacy is not generally considered acceptable between men traditionally, for instance. There are even women out there that complain about their man being emotionally vulnerable, as they find it unmanly and unattractive. While there's an effort to change this in more modern times, a lot of people still look at the assholes and incels, and just blame men for being terrible. But what would be most beneficial to all, regardless of sex or gender, is to address the problems all genders face. It's all interrelated.

    • @EvanWantsJam
      @EvanWantsJam 8 месяцев назад

      Actually, to answer your question about Bumble: it is, technically, hiding the men from you. If you enter a gender identity into Bumble, it will actually prefer to show you the same assumed gender. I found this out by accident. It's always funny when they try and talk about men being more violent because you will also hear them talk about "catfights" and the biting and scratching and hair pulling and how they don't hold back like men do. Like; do you even hear yourself??? xD
    Talks about how there were never women in dnd in the past. Proceeds to describe the exact reasons WHY that was without realizing it. Like "they didn't stick around". Okay WHY? WHY DIDN'T THEY STICK AROUND DOOD? Could it be because they were fkin BULLIED by the kids who were always complaining about being bullied??? Hmmmm what a fkin mystery. And with the thing about being in the medical field; you just know he means he wants male surgeons and female nurses.
    Imagine how much better his life would have been if he'd taught his daughter how to play dnd.

Emotionally detached and just a weird guy but also one of the most compelling characters because you learn about his backstory and it explains why he is the way he is and you gain new sympathy for him that's what a woman can bring to the table.

Like this guy and his friends were 100% slobbering over and attempting to get in the pants of his female players as a teen, and now he's just uncomfortable with not being allowed to do that since his "DM authority" has been eroded. Mainly by things like online games being available where women can actually play without being subject to this shit and actually have fun without weird sexist baggage.

Not in a particularly edgy or satirical way, just the simple juxtaposition. It's kind of hard to explain because it sounds like so many things that it isn't, but my point is that things can actually be pretty fresh if you present people with a cute, charming setting and then the minute someone rolls a critical it puts the goofy little goblin creature's internal anatomy on full display. And then a cute apprentice witch comes by and uses her little magical broom to sweep its blood into a jar, happily explaining how she needs it to keep her incurable flesh-eating disease in remission, and offering the party a one-time-use magical item that can permanently drain the electrical impulses out of any single creature with a functioning nervous system. Oh, and she makes cookies for everyone, too.

I got recommended a bunch of their videos a while back and while I didn't watch any of them (I avoid giving them engagement if I can), the purple-haired dragon icon immediately made me wonder if it was a parody, but seeing the video list left me very disappointed.
    Aww, he changed the icon! It used to be a red dragon with the same pink/purple hairstyle that all the anti-SJW types obsess over for some reason. I guess even he realized it was ridiculous.
    Oh geez, I knew it was going to be bad, but he landed "Feminine thought" "cultural marxism" and "the west" in the first like 10 seconds. He should quit D&D and go into speedrunning.
    I guess I did watch a couple of his videos without noticing the channel. I was looking into old settings a while back and saw his videos on Birthright which I remember actually having a pretty neat story about his family's decade-spanning campaign. Really sad it's tied up with all the awfulness, as I found it pretty cool and wish the channel was just that.
    Something else really stood out to me. The bit where he talks about his personal experience with women in his group... which was great. It's like on one hand he's saying this whole thing on a principle, despite the fact his own life experiences directly contradict that principle. I suspect that's probably really common with people like this and it kind of shows how messed up the whole thing is. Getting so wrapped up in an ideal that you ignore your own experiences completely.

My female players are better at the game, including strategy and roleplay, than my male players, who are more focused on having the biggest number (but their tactics in combat are foolish and their decisions in RP lead to unnecessary conflicts). The women of my game actually care about it and will think of it outside of Game Time, such as levelling up their character on their own time instead of waiting to come back next week for me to guide them through the process, or coming up with quests and stories for their characters to do instead of me telling them the story like a video game. The men are just here for Big Damage and Railroad to Boss Fight (but don't dare make the boss fight require strategy or have Bigger Numbers than we do or we'll call you unfair)

      Seriously though, why are you playing DND if you're just going to play it like a video game. The fun part about DnD is the story and the interactions, not doing really, really slow rpg combat.
      Maybe it's a communication thing since I usually find women easier to discuss and plan stuff with (albeit I realized this more so from school/college projects and communication puzzles in video games than dnd). It's like you're speaking into the air and they can't hear you whenever you want to discuss stuff, set the ground work, etc.

      @@genericcatgirl because that is kinda the point of DnD. it isn't an RPG, it is a wargame. the rules don't really support interaction beyond the most surface level or combat and the books don't really do anything to encourage it. don't get me wrong, taking what little dnd actually has and doing something a little bit better with it is fine and i do not think DnD's encouraged way of play is good, but just look at the mage the ascension; you are literally required to fill out your character's beliefs and their personality, a solid third of the merits are things like "you have friends" or "you rent an apartment" and things in that vein. same with the flaws! all the white wolf games do things like that, on top of actually giving crutches a new player can rely on to learn how to (role)play.
