It's-14 F today. I'm just sticking it out on the deck. Great thing about living in Minnesota. You never run out of room for Christmas leftovers. Out in the porch they go.
My grandmother got this recipe from a local television station in 1985 from one of those cooking segments. When she died, I happened to find it. I had forgotten all about it until then.
Instead of parchment paper I use aluminum foil and I butter the pan before I put my crackers on the pan. It gives the crackers a more buttery toasted tastes. It really ups the game on this already delicious treat. 😊
I like the way you express yourself)) I've tried these and used spised nut mix to sprinkle on top - and it worked beautiful! Sweet and salty mix - yum!
I used a few heaping jars of canna butter in my toffee and some real crack, bow my wife is salty as I burnt the house down and ate all the shortbread. It's never nut free around my place.
A little disappointed because my saltines & toffee burned. I just found another recipe that instructs oven temp 350 ( not 400 as shown in this video). If you have an oven that runs hot, definitely use the lower temp & watch closely. 😔
Yeah I just made a semi homade cake for fall instead of pumpkin I used sweet potatoes a box cake mix yellow I added chopped walnuts an some sweet rasions it's so moist an very good filling oh don't forget too add cinammon if you have it .
Hi! I’m sorry you didn’t get the consistency needed but that just means you do need to boil it a little longer. Use a silicone brush to make sure there’s no loose granules on the sides of the pan and ensure the sugar is completely dissolved before moving to the next step.
Yes you can. If you have a countertop toaster oven. You also can half the recipe. I have bought a bag of carmels and melted them in the microwave, slowly. like 20 seconds. Pull out n stir. Put back in and keep doing that until completely melted. Pour over the crackers. Then put Hershey candy bar pieces over top. Let sit around 5 minutes or so until they are melted and spread wit your spatula. You can add nuts, cooked bacon pieces, pretzels or anything you would like. Still taste pretty much the same with a lot less work. Give it a try.
Check your oven temp with A thermometer. Your oven element a easy fix with you tube maybe about to die.my wife has horrible arthritis from her hands onward fixed our oven for us. She even read on the back of the oven the serial number then bought the new element part. She had it bought n installed by her before I came home from work. She's a very much a girly girl. Still amazes me after 45 years.
@@cougarhunter33 false alarm. It’s separated just before I poured it over the crackers but when I was done baking it in the oven it turned out fine, so I spoke too soon.
I used Nestle semi-sweet chocolate chips & they wouldn't melt. I tried putting the pan back in the oven hoping that would help, they kept their shape & started to shine but. When I tried to smoothe them out they got almost crumbly. The chips were within the exp date & they didn't look like they had any bloom. I was hoping maybe you'd have a suggestion.
They got burnt, when the chocolate melts it will mostly hold its shape until you smooth it. When you put it into the oven because it held its shape, they were likely already melted and the heat burnt the chocolate.
Sounds like the chocolate might of been old. I just made some. I had to put my chocolate n such in the oven for 4-5 minutes before spreading. Then it spread. I put mine in the fridge for 4 hoours. Yum!

You got that right!
I love this! I used dark brown sugar and 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/4 of sea salt wow! It took it to another level 😋
Sounds great!
1/4 tsp. of sea salt....right??

It's definitely a vintage recipe. We've been making this forever.

I used to do the same. This year, I started using parchment with a quick shot of cooking spray.
We don't always like to use aluminum foil for baking, parchment is always our go-to.
Thank you fir this! I needed one more recipe for Christmas! Merry Christmas everbody!! ❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸🎄🎄🎄

Yum!
I’ll be making this tomorrow. It’s mouth watering 😋
Let me know how you like it!
Im so glad you use parchment paper. I hate aluminum foil.
Parchment is a much better way to go.
Nothing like a bit of Christmas crack
I agree!

You definitely have to keep an eye on them because they do bake quickly if your oven isn't accurate.
My try at this burnt as well, very frustrated
🧂🧂🧂 SALT IS LEGION 🧂🧂🧂
Add crushed candy canes on your crack its awsome🎉

Thanks Kelly!
Happy Birthday month!
Why not put the nuts in a ziploc bag and whack with a wooden cooking mallet? Do not completely close the baggie so air escapes
Great idea but I try not to waste a bag when I can.
I put my pecans in a ziplock bag and tap them with my small hammer that I keep in the kitchen.
what a great recipe! you kinda look like Heather Locklear ;)
Thank you!
Yummy
It was
Love this crack but sometimes the toffee part turns out gritty or granulated ☹️. Did I not let it boil long enough? So disappointed. Help 😬 please.

Thank you so much for your response 🥰 I truly appreciate it.
Can I make this without oven ?
Unfortunately, not.

I attempted 2 batches but each one burned while cooking the butter and sugar. Burner set to medium, timer set to 3 minutes. What might be the problem?

Stir the Carmel while it’s cooking look for that rolling boil and stop while it starts
This is from a German receipt called “Brickle” - originally Graham crackers were used
WHen you add the sugar to the butter, you need to stir slowly but constantly as it comes up to temp. That way, the heating is even.
You really have to stay with it at least three minutes, and stir it the whole time
How many cup of butter? It looks like you 're puting 3 cups.
1 cup.....the full recipe instructions and ingredient list is in the description.
Two sticks n a packed cup of brown sugar
🤤🤤🤤🤤😛😛😛😋😋😋😋😋👍👍
Butter separated, what did I do wrong? Did I get it too hot? I used to thermometer. It was up to 270.
When did it separate? When you were boiling it or when you baked the crackers?
I take the butter up slowly. That way it doesn't go wonky.
@@cougarhunter33 false alarm. It’s separated just before I poured it over the crackers but when I was done baking it in the oven it turned out fine, so I spoke too soon.
This is actually a German receipt called brickle
I never knew that! Thanks for sharing.

Awww, I'm so sorry. I have no suggestions because that's exactly what I used. That's so weird and I can't even imagine what went wrong.
They got burnt, when the chocolate melts it will mostly hold its shape until you smooth it. When you put it into the oven because it held its shape, they were likely already melted and the heat burnt the chocolate.
My boyfriends Mom had the same exact problem, twice! Were you ever able to figure out what happened?
Sounds like the chocolate might of been old. I just made some. I had to put my chocolate n such in the oven for 4-5 minutes before spreading. Then it spread. I put mine in the fridge for 4 hoours. Yum!
I did a mixture of mini semi-sweet and regular size milk chocolate chips. They melted perfectly. I used Ghirardelli chocolate.
I've been making these for 30 yrs. Buy the name brand crackers and real butter.
Good tip!
I burnt the sugar and butter…….
You do have to keep an eye on it because it cooks quickly.
Idk what’s wrong with me- I made it Xmas time, did not love it …
It’s not for everyone but thank you for commenting!
We like to top ours with smashed up candy canes.
That sounds so festive, I love it!
Please turn off that music. Thanks
