Every year my friend's daughter would buy up all the plain chocolate Easter candy that was been sold half price. She would store them in the freezer. She also collected all her friends' Christmas cards which they were just going to recycle. Then about a month before Christmas she would make the brickle. She would make little boxes the size of a deck of cards and fill it with the candy and sell it for 50 cents. That is how she got her extra money for Christmas. At the time (this was about ten years ago) I worked in a big office and I would bring in bags and bags of these boxes and sell them for her. Even after she lost her sight and was unable to bake or cook anymore coworkers would ask if I would be selling the brickle again. A lovely memory now that I am in lockdown because of Covid and starting to do some candy making. Thanks for posting this and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
If you save your butter wrappers, instead of throwing them away, you can use them to butter your baking dishes prior to using them. You can also freeze them until you need them.

I also do a peanut butter version with semi-sweet chocolate chips. My family loves this stuff. Thank you for the video. Always love to see other recipe ideas.

I’ve had both gas and electric and I tell you I take gas any time over electric, gas is wonderful, once you’ve had gas you don’t want to go back to electric.
There are advantages to gas. If you lose power you can still cook. And technically you are not supposed to can on a glass top electric stove. But the old eye burner you can. On the other hand I always worried the pilot light would go out and we would all die in our sleep or a gas explosion takes my house and neighborhood out in a massive explosion. 😏Just sayin.
@@floridagirl330 newer gas stoves don’t have pilot lights. The gas is off until the knob is turned. IMO, gas is superior. I haven’t been able to make my famous fried potatoes half as good on a electric. Control just helps everything turn out better. I don’t have the hook-up for gas stove at my house, it would be expensive for me to have done.
Stove top is a must! When you have gas you will never go back to electric. Had both and love gas. You are right about being able to still cook when power goes out. Living in south Louisiana with hurricanes( 4 this year) it’s a must!
I used to make this every holiday season for my mom's quilt guild. I would break up a candy cane and sprinkle it across the top after spreading the chocolate chips and before it cooled. Can use Andes mints too. Mint is always a good change for Christmas. Dad had me use orange chocolate once for a change of pace and it was decadent. Yum
Go gas for stove top. Started out as newly wed (49 years ago) with gas then went to electric. I burned everything! You can control gas so much better, doesn’t get too hot and stays hot too long. Go gas!
Oh my goodness. Absolutely get gas. I love it. When you adjust the temp on a gas stove it is immediate, where as electric takes time to cool down or heat up.
If you ever get a gas stove a heads up if you're use to wearing a towel cloth on you, the towel can catch fire , if you're not consciousness of it and lean to the stove . Long hair can too and that's happened .
Today I watched so many of your Christmas videos. It was a wonderful day. I need to find them all and comment on them. I watch on my tv and comment on my phone. You are a joy. God bless you.
Thank you for sharing, yum yum yum! I'm sort of like you, you put a smile on my face and a warmth in my heart, because of all the things I've ever lost, I miss my mind the most! 😁
I've always used a gas stove and loved it. When I moved into my house 21 years ago it had a gas cook top and an electric wall oven. Surprisingly I like the way the electric oven cooks.
I grew up with a gas stove and learned to cook on that. After our house burned my senior year my parents went all-electric and we had to learn how to cook with an electric stove. Mama never changed back, but when I married my husband and I had a gas stove and I was so glad. I never really liked an electric stove, and when we have had ice storms we could at least cook if our power was off. (It also helps heat the house some in that case.) I'm sorry you were sick. So glad you're so much better. I'm going to have to make this!
Yes, I hope she is better too! This was a video from 2019! This is the yummiest cookie ever! I do mine a little differently (posted a minute ago). It uses the oven to brown and bubble instead of on the stovetop, but the results are similar.
I made this for the first time ever today. Well, I made it twice today because the first time I burned the sugar in the oven lol. The second time everything turned out perfect. My husband and I love this!
I switched from electric to gas and LOVE it! It did have a short learning curve because it heats up so fast, but you learn quickly. And I LOVE my gas oven! I got the gas oven with the convection feature and use it ALL the time. So much quicker and things cook so evenly even with multiple pans due to the fan circulating the heat. You won't regret the change. The only negative is the heating up the kitchen in the summer. But, we just got a microwave with a browning & convection feature so I'm hoping that takes care of that in the summer.
I prefer a gas stove. Yes you can cook when the power goes out. I found the heat easiest to control. I had the electric stove removed from my new house and replaced before I would move in. My husband and mother both agree with me.
My husband and I bought a all electric home, and I really miss my gas stove that was in our previous home. It baked better, and cooked so much better on the stove top.
G'day from Smithfield South Australia. I love watching you and seeing your life and family. God bless you and please stay safe sweetheart . Please get better soon. ❤🙏🌹
I have the same pot. Love that they can take a beating. My family is not easy on pots and pans. Got everything to make that. Think my family will love it.
We used to live in a parsonage that had gas stove top , I had always used electric stoves but I loved that stove when you get ready to cook ,you see the flame ,easy to regulate, I still miss it
Gas is instant on off . Electric is slow on off. It all depends what you're used to. I've used electric at work, gas at home... Gas is my preference 50 years of home history.
@@marilynndapp5809 - Induction is not slow in and off and convection ovens are great too. I inly have an older ceramic top (non-induction) and even that is a lot quicker and easier to use than the old electric ones. 😊
I actually saw your video and recipe I year ago. I didn't make it then but I did make it this year. Wow, what a hit! I did pecans on half of the pan and sprinkles on the other half. I knew my grandkids would go after the sprinkles. Thanks for an easy yummy recipe, Leslie. Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family.
I made this for my family and now I am making more for them because they demolished it. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. I like you and your husband. Seems like a great Man of God!!🙏🏻💗😋
I have a duel fuel stove meaning it uses gas for the burners and electric for the oven. Actually we use propane instead of gas because gas is not available in my area so we have a buried 500 gallon propane tank. I tried to get the tank refilled after about 3 years of use and it was only down $30 worth so that shows how little you use for the burners. Great recipe, looks delish I will definitely try this one out.
An induction cooktop is a marvel to cook with since it is so responsive. I have had one for forty years and enjoy it immensely. As a little parlour trick I put an ice cube in a pan, turn the burner on high and PRESTO the cube goes to boiling in about a minute. Then take the pan off the burner and you can put the palm of your hand on the burner. The pan is hot, not the burner. Induction is well worth it.
Exactly and you can add dried cranberries, craisens, crushed candy canes, crushed butterfingers, sprinkles, or just about anything to the top of the melted chips!
@@sassypants5716 It already tastes like a heath bar, if you use graham crackers it turns out thicker like heath-saltines make it thinner like a skore bar..both are delicious😌 I have a different cracker in mind to experiment with next time, I couldn't find them at my local Wal-Mart, too close to Christmas I guess, but I will absolutely let everyone know how they turn out (if they're good). I personally think that this will top the charts for cracker toffee!!
I've cooked on gas stoves most of my life. I love it, you just have to get used to how to adjust your flame from low to high. I have used them to help heat when its really cold.
I noticed you now use solid surfaceIt heats up so quickly. Try to fit in a two burner gas separately. Jenn aire makes the grill griddle burner combination.
I used to make Southern Living's roasted nuts every holiday. Those are pretty easy to make and don't take long. The recipe used just an egg white, sugar and spices. I liked to roast almonds and pecans separately, and also add some silver and gold food powders. So good and easy to make. I'd get bulk nuts from Costco and those were pretty inexpensive.
I like a gas cooktop....if the power goes out, you just need to LIGHT the burner with a match....as the starter on modern range topps make an electric spark to light the gas.
Discovered your channel around 2020, this brickle for a huge success for Christmas. In 2024, I made again, and it is still a quick and easy...deliciouos recipe. Thank you
I grew up with electric stove, still own one & always will. I tried gas for six months & couldn't get used to it...went back to electric. I'm not comfortable with gas..leakage has killed whole families b4 & possibilities of explosions is scary! Just give me good ol' electricity!
We call it chocolate bark and though our recipe varies in cooking times and heat, it's basically the very same thing, and Ohhhh so delicious. WE love this and I try to make it every year now, the past 2 times, I decided to add some butterscotch chips mixed with the chocolate chips and oh my, my.....it's like a little piece of heaven right there, lol, Yummm! Last year, instead of sprinkling the top with Pecans, I sprinkled them with broken pieces of candy cane.
I love this recipe of yours, it is so delicious. I’ve made it so much at holidays with all the chocolates, even with peanut butter chips. Ummmmm! Thank you and God bless you!
Oh my gosh, just found your channel and am so homesick! It has been years since I have had butter brickle! I grew upon Vermont and my Dad always made two sweets at Christmas, butter brickle and peanut butter fudge. He has been gone 27 years in Feb and although he freely gave his fudge recipe to anyone, no one was allowed in the kitchen when he made it...and no matter how closely anyone followed the recipe, it was never like his. I got married and moved to Scotland a month after my Dad passed. And his butter brickel was easy to make so I had planned on making that an annual Christmas treat. Sadly, they do not sell saltines over here so I have not had it in so long. I could almost smell them through the video and am near enough drooling! 💖 We have a really thing and layered cracker here called butter puffs. I think I am going to give it a try with those, you have inspired me.Thank you! Did you manage to get your kitchen remodelled? Or at least get your gas stove top. Because we had hard winters when I was growing up, we had gas oven and stove top (for the exact reason you mentioned, still cooking without electricity...baking meant you kept the kitchen warm too). I personally prefer the gas option for the stovetop as you have much more control. No waiting for the burner to cool down and having to take the pan off until it does, it is near enough instant. And it is far better for drying your cast iron pans quickly and thoroughly too. When I moved to Scotland it was to a house with an electric stove/oven and wow was there a huge learning curve! Nothing worked as I had always cooked it and I burned more things than I care to admit lol. Sadly with the covid pandemic it is going to be awhile yet before I get to see my family, so I am looking forward to attempting my British/American version of butter brickle to have a bit of home and family here with me. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and hope 2022 brings much love, prosperity, happiness and good health to you all. 💖
I did get my remodel this year you can go and watch that video and yes I did get my gas/electric duel fuel stove and I love it!! Your story of your dad was touching, keep his memory alive!
Good luck. I'm gluten free and now use any type of GF cracker. So you'll be fine testing whatever cracker you can find. Your Dad sounded like a wonderful person.
Hi , I just stumbled across the Brickle video and made it with Tennis biscuits , I added raisins and sprinkled a pinch of salt on before putting in the oven. Regarding your stove , when I revamped my kitchen I got a gas hob and had the electric oven installed as an eye level oven. I had that done 3 years ago and never regretted it. Remember to get a certified gas installer to install a gate valve on the gas line.
When you remodel, consider the level of your oven, going up to shoulder height to make ease of use your priority. You could add a second oven if necessary in the same cabinet, stackign them up. Also consider how you use your sink. Because of my low back I had to remove the storage area under my sink so I could have a place to elevate my foot while sitting on a stool in front of the sink. Look at getting a professional chef's gas stovetop (incorporating storage to both left and right sides with a turbo fan above it to draw off steam and heat from cooking. I use a six burner gas stove and really put it to hard use. one burner was damaged when we first got it and it really sends out lots of flame when it's on (which is excellent for the asian style meals we make.) Plus as you mentioned, when the power is out you still have use of the gas heating. ONe last conisderation: do you have an independent wataer heater just for the kitchen? In my tiny house, if anyone flushes the toilet we loose hot water to the kitchen stove. A small water heater just for the kitchen hot water supply is a God-send. I hope you are able to build an in-kitchen pantry to help preserve your precious space.
I love the recipe but i think I'm going to try ot this year with broken up pretzels, maybe make both for variety. One with pecans one with crushed candy canes.

Simmer on low for as long as you think it needs.
Enjoy!!!
Thanks for this - sounds delicious 😋
Thank you for this recipe. It’s to die for! I put crushed up Heath bars on top 🙄😋
Thanks for saving me the typing.
100% agree. Gas stove/oven is so much better.
I have had gas and I wanted to go back to electric. It's cleaner.
Yum
Ummmmm yummy .... Thank You soooo much for this excellent and super easy recipe ..... Thank You & Hava Wonderful Day !!!!
Same to you Kim
Go gas for stove top. Started out as newly wed (49 years ago) with gas then went to electric. I burned everything! You can control gas so much better, doesn’t get too hot and stays hot too long. Go gas!
Never tried before. But I'm going to make this. Thank you.
Oh my goodness. Absolutely get gas. I love it. When you adjust the temp on a gas stove it is immediate, where as electric takes time to cool down or heat up.
Is there a written recipe
@@lindahalifax7201 go on Pinterest and type in Christmas crack and you'll find this exact recipe and many variables.
My only complaint about a gas cooktop is that it is more difficult to keep clean.
If you ever get a gas stove
a heads up if you're use to wearing a towel cloth on you, the towel can catch fire , if you're not consciousness of it and lean to the stove . Long hair can too and that's happened .

Ohhhhh yes maam...be very cautious!!!
Thanks for sharing your brickle recipe I will make this sometime this month probably on my twins birthday thanks again God bless
Today I watched so many of your Christmas videos. It was a wonderful day. I need to find them all and comment on them. I watch on my tv and comment on my phone. You are a joy. God bless you.
Never heard of this yummy treat! Sounds wonderful. Thanks 4 sharing! I'm gonna make it! 🥰
I've heard it called Sweet and Salty. I'm making it this week for Christmas.
I have never had this. Looks scrumptious! Thank you for this recipe and all your hard work!
Thank you for sharing, yum yum yum! I'm sort of like you, you put a smile on my face and a warmth in my heart, because of all the things I've ever lost, I miss my mind the most! 😁
Great recipe . Your such a lovely lady hope your feeling much better soon don't push yourself too hard it takes time to recover from pneumonia.
I've always used a gas stove and loved it. When I moved into my house 21 years ago it had a gas cook top and an electric wall oven. Surprisingly I like the way the electric oven cooks.
That’s okay about the sniffles! You shared the Brickell
Watched last year and came across it again this evening. Sharing again. God bless you and yours❤🙏🙏❤
Hope you are feeling better...I think I will love the brickle candy...I am going to make so...GOD BLESS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS
Yes, I hope she is better too! This was a video from 2019! This is the yummiest cookie ever! I do mine a little differently (posted a minute ago). It uses the oven to brown and bubble instead of on the stovetop, but the results are similar.
For Christmas, I like to use crushed peppermint candy canes instead of chopped nuts. That has been a favorite of my guests.
So sorry that you are sick. God bless you and take the illness away. Olive this candy. I will have to make it for my church. Thank you so much.
Gas, definitely. You can immediately adjust the heat. I’ve had both and would never go back to electric. Enjoy your recipes. ❤️
I prefer a gas stove. Yes you can cook when the power goes out. I found the heat easiest to control. I had the electric stove removed from my new house and replaced before I would move in. My husband and mother both agree with me.
Definitely gas!
My husband and I bought a all electric home, and I really miss my gas stove that was in our previous home. It baked better, and cooked so much better on the stove top.
I’m gonna try these this weekend!! Looks super delish!! ❤️❤️
I’ve never heard of this candy! It looks delicious!
Kkk
@@marilynndapp5809 - Induction is not slow in and off and convection ovens are great too. I inly have an older ceramic top (non-induction) and even that is a lot quicker and easier to use than the old electric ones. 😊

I actually saw your video and recipe I year ago. I didn't make it then but I did make it this year. Wow, what a hit! I did pecans on half of the pan and sprinkles on the other half. I knew my grandkids would go after the sprinkles. Thanks for an easy yummy recipe, Leslie. Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family.
So glad you liked it!!
I made this for my family and now I am making more for them because they demolished it. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. I like you and your husband. Seems like a great Man of God!!🙏🏻💗😋
So glad they liked it!!
That looks great definitely I will have to make it this Holliday... Thank you for sharing...
I was really wanting this but had no choc chips so I added some cocoa powder and a little extra sugar and it turned out really good.
I love it when a cook ‘uses what they have’!!!!!!
👌🏽🤗. I’ll try that cocoa powder too. Thanks and Happy Holidays.
I've had both. Gas top is the only way to go. I have an electric oven and a gas top on my stove now. Love it.
You sweet, dear Pastor's wife. May you be healthy and happy for Christmas '22. Love to you.
Thank you Linda
We just went from electric to gas and we love the gas the best.
You can also do this with Matzah crackers and it is fabulous!! We make this for Hanukkah!
Exactly and you can add dried cranberries, craisens, crushed candy canes, crushed butterfingers, sprinkles, or just about anything to the top of the melted chips!
Ok, I maker a few pans of brickle a season, I put toffee chips, Carmel balls, mini m&m’s, and fun stuff on it with the nuts.
those ideas sound wonderful! thank you!
Yum...toffee chips would make it taste like a Heath bar!
Omg. I love this recipe. I think I have everything on hand. Thank you for sharing. Bless you and yours
I'm gunna make this. It looks delicious.
I've cooked on gas stoves most of my life. I love it, you just have to get used to how to adjust your flame from low to high. I have used them to help heat when its really cold.
Gas is a more even cook and cleaner. I've used both, prefer gas, have electric now, not by choice. Best wishes, feel better.
Love my gas stove and oven!!! Once you turn the burners off the heat is done... electric you have to wait for them to cool down.
I noticed you now use solid surfaceIt heats up so quickly. Try to fit in a two burner gas separately. Jenn aire makes the grill griddle burner combination.
Girrrl you had the Rona :( This looks delish and easy (love Saltines). Congrats on the new attention. Subbed!
That’s what I thought too lol
What a blessing that I found your channel! You’re just lovely and I find you comforting!
I love my gas stove I have had both and would choose gas over electric anyway!
I used to make Southern Living's roasted nuts every holiday. Those are pretty easy to make and don't take long. The recipe used just an egg white, sugar and spices. I liked to roast almonds and pecans separately, and also add some silver and gold food powders. So good and easy to make. I'd get bulk nuts from Costco and those were pretty inexpensive.
what was it called if you remember please? i tried to find it and couldnt.
My Grandmother Loughridge made this she called it cracker candy
Just the right name for it... 😀. Happy Holiday.
That’s what I call it!
Cracker candy is what We allways called it too My Mom used to make it Shr is gone now I miss Her She was a wonderful Mom
I like a gas cooktop....if the power goes out, you just need to LIGHT the burner with a match....as the starter on modern range topps make an electric spark to light the gas.
Im gonna make this for the 1st time with my 7 yrs old Grand daughter tomorrow! thank you and I am gonna be your new Subscriber!
Discovered your channel around 2020, this brickle for a huge success for Christmas. In 2024, I made again, and it is still a quick and easy...deliciouos recipe. Thank you
Gas is way better than electric. Cooks faster and even cooking, and yes you do have it when power goes out.
It also can blow up. Experienced that too
I grew up with electric stove, still own one & always will.
I love the efficiency of the gas stove! Plus it cost less and it always works even when there is no electrical power!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I do not have a lot of time so this recipe is great and fabulous. Thank you!!
We have a really thing and layered cracker here called butter puffs.
The Farming Pastor's Wife: "My kitchen is extremely small"
Me: "Girl, come over here and see a really small kitchen"
Hi , I just stumbled across the Brickle video and made it with Tennis biscuits , I added raisins and sprinkled a pinch of salt on before putting in the oven.
Regarding your stove , when I revamped my kitchen I got a gas hob and had the electric oven installed as an eye level oven. I had that done 3 years ago and never regretted it. Remember to get a certified gas installer to install a gate valve on the gas line.
Two people can barely fit in my kitchen.
You are going to have to move some walls out and make the lounge or dining room smaller. Cant get stiffled in a small kitchen.
Please confirm that a brick of butter is 100g
Yeah, my kitchen is tiny too! I mean two people would be considered crowded, lol!
I do love your personality and manerisma
My hubby will love this. Thank you for sharing.
