My brother in law makes toffee for the men at his Fire station and for us each Christmas.
His toffee is always thin and easy to bite into because of an "Accident" at the firehouse.
He unknowingly put the cookie sheet on the stove with a low fire going.
When he poured the toffee and began to spread it, he noticed that it wasn't setting up Fast as normal.
Then he feels the heat from the cookie sheet!
Once it cooled it set up great. But, it was much thinner!
Today, he places the cookie sheet in a low oven to preheat it -- Perfect Toffee Everytime! ♥️😋😋😋 Give it a try sometime!
    Thanks for your Wonderful
    Videos! You are Amazing!

I have made toffee for 50 years. I take it out of the pan while still pliable, using the parchment tabs, place it on a flat surface and use a pizza cutter to make pretty squares and then let it cool. Took me 30 years to think of that! Gosh, the toffee gifts I gave are countless but always appreciated.

I agree , it is a little too thick, so I use a cookie sheet to get the right thickness (a little on the thin side) for me. This English toffee is also sold as a "Heath Bar" in the stores, but I haven't seen it sold in years.

I make this every year around Christmas time. Although I’ve never added water and after so many years I don’t use a thermometer either. There is a certain “look” to the toffee that you just know when it’s done. I’ve also tried adding vanilla but have never had a noticeable taste difference without it.
I also pour the toffee out on a pizza pan or cookie sheet just to let it spread in its own.

This toffee recipe is simple and works better than all of the previous recipes I tried. I'm not a chef, baker, or candymaker, but I was able to achieve delicious toffee repeatedly and it didn't require me to use a bunch of condensed milk or piles of other ingredients.
It is a test of endurance for me though, both times I took about an hour in the kitchen watching the toffee and stirring. But I just pulled up a chair and the end result was worth the effort. I also really like that this recipe doesn't require melting any chocolate.

Great recipe. My mom made this starting back in the 60s.. about the same recipe. We did not use a therm but just knew it was done when it turned med brown.Sometimes the butter will separate, but we found if you use Imperial margarine.. it works out every time. Must less costly too. You would be surprised. I noticed Imperial at the Dollar Tree.. we did the choc the same way. Ive used choc chips but my mom always used hershey bars laid on top and then smoothed out. Salt top is the rage today.. I am not a fan.
I always use a heavy aluminum pan for candy making. Less likely to stick on the bottom.

I've made this! And now have to make it every holiday, or my family will disown me. It's fun to add maple syrup and walnuts, for walnut and maple toffee, or skip the chocolate, but only cook until between hard and soft Crack. It's a light, almost delicate toffee cookie kinda? Lol. You really can have fun with this! Thanks John! Whenever I need a recipe it's straight to Preppy kitchen I go! 😋

@@oonagh2811 i have mine stored in a tin can and it seems fine. It doesn’t stick together at all. I would think that as long as the candy has cooled and you have it broken into pieces, it should be fine in a tightly wrapped plastic bag. Give it a try with a few pieces. But for sure, it doesn’t stick together in my Christmas cookie tins.

This looks delicious. I can't wait to try it! Toffee is my favorite candy, so if I learn to make this it will save some money. Two questions, though. I hope someone might read this and help me out? John says, "give the pecans a quick toast in the oven first." What temperature is best? And by "quick" does he mean just 3 - 5 minutes? And finally, he says to use choc chips. What do people recommend? Semi-sweet or milk chocolate? I realize it's probably just a personal taste preference. Thanks to anyone who might respond. Happy Holidays!

Fabulous! You make it look so easy and I thank you for that. Growing up making old fashioned fudge and other candies my mother taught me how to use a cool cup of water too test my candy. I have now moved on to cand thermometer. It's so important too make sure your boil is at the right stage. Going too make your toffee today. Wish me luck. Thank you for video!!
