I know this is an old video but if you look at 14:19 mark it says 3Racing. That is the brand for this light kit. Enjoying the series so far. Going to fix up my old Blackfoot soon.
try watching nearly 6 years after the point you say now!! haha. I bought the Tamiya set times 4 I think it was for my trucks, and only now come across these reviews, and your channel.
I’m watching 5 years later. Still relevant information as most of these are still available. I’ve bought the one you like best at this point as well as the “Tamiya style” one. Just FYI, it still has the same look and design but does not have the Tamiya name on it. Does have the stars logo, just no text.
Wow, just watched ur whole series on the no-name light kits. Even tho it was an older series, it was just what I needed! I had a kit that was sitting for a long time since I could never figure out how it worked! Also, it's cool u did several different kits bc one of them #5 is actually the one I had..😁👌!! Yeah, I didn't find many other videos that covered these kits, great work!
Welcome to the tamiya adiction i have 5 er my super champ is in bits BUT the hornet, super hornet, wild willy and monster Beatle are doing just fine also have a nitro truggy and a 2 stroke 26cc just got a tamiya ta07 pro kit with a brushless motor for drift/turing i put a second hand toyota body with a light kit in it still trying to work out the lighting settings
Looking forward to your video dealing with those front shocks. My Tamiya Hornet is in the mail right now, and I'm interested in upgrading the front shocks. Thanks for the video!
Oh I will do one soon. I have gotten so many people asking where I got those shocks and I am terrified that someone will buy a set and think they are good. Boy you would be wrong. I have some options so that would be a good video to do.
this unit seems really ok to me too, just a matter of socket selection. the constant ON headlights from one channel, "high beams" kicking in at 40-50% throttle (the concept you don't seem to like wanting all 4 ON, but that's ok), would leave the channel open for the brake lights. other option is just double up the LED's out the constant ON channel. at half the price of others this unit looks pretty good.
The reason why some light controllers have the On while driving and Off while neutral is in case you use the controller to reverse the motor (forward=backwards), then you can use that port for your brake lights.
I thought so too, but I found this statement when reviewing the ebay listing for the HeyOK KOH Brake Light Controller: The deep dark secret as to why it even exists is because not all electronic speed controls agree on which direction is forward. If you get your reverse lights plugged in and find that they are turning on when you are going forward, plug them into the forward output and then they will come on when you go reverse!
This series was very helpful, thank you. I also have a GT power kit sitting in a box somewhere that I never installed. I will be ordering a few of the 4th kit you tested (they are still available, guess you didn't get them all), and maybe one of these if they're still available since I can combine it with the GT power kit and should have some good options there. I will be ordering some of your ORV parts soon too, I've got a brand new 2016 Blackfoot waiting to be built. As for the different modes on these lighting kits, I suspect I know why they are like that. These are airplane kits that were poorly retrofit for car use. The throttle controlled lights are common for simulating turbine/afterburners, and all the flashing lights are used for navigation etc.
Great review (all of these reviews have been invaluable - thank you, RC lighting kits are a minefield). These two sets seem, ideal products - even if I have to extend the leads - but yet again defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. I'm too late to the party and can't locate these VFM products. UPDATE (1):- I think I've found three of the better sets (with the four switches in the middle of the control box), same wiring diagram and similar instructions. When they arrive I'll try to remember to post again with a link/update.
Always nice and entertaining to watch your light unit reviews, even though it's gonna take a while before I install my first one :-) Is it actually any good, when running, to have those turn lights? I mean when just running around, turning all the time, doesn't it look a bit silly? A new kit I bought included a TLU-01. Seems like it's just connected to the batteri and will provide constant front/tail lights. Gonna be my first installment of lights. Hope to learn something from it :-)
Well, I guess it's up to taste. You can see them from far away if it isn't too bright out but for me, it's all about the blinkyness lol. I just think they are cool to look at. Do they do anything? No. Do they help when racing? No. Are they neat? Yes. Let me know how you like the TLU-01. The price and few LED's it comes with annoys me.
AMPRO Engineering Yeah, and I guess if I enjoy having front and tail lights, I probably also want turn lights etc. :-) Yeah, too pricey, but this one just followed along with a reasonably priced kit (#84431). Looking forward trying it out.
With these controllers I would not recommend it. Perhaps going for a 5 mm to a 3 mm LED as long as the voltage is the same then that would work but these are very poorly designed and anything requiring too much current draw would probably fry the board
Hello ampro thanks for the video, i know this is a old post but maybe you can help me,is it possible to discpne t this type of module from the 3rd channel of the transmitter? Or are they always on with the car?
Great question. This system does need to be attached to ch1/ch2 for the operation and does not have an option for 3rd channel operation. This is something you would see with a higher end system like one from MyTrickRC (that I have covered on this channel too).
Hey bud. Thank you for your videos. I am stuck on what's the best and cheapest option for me and my 1/14 Tamiya truck. I don't need a truck engine sound or vibrations. I want to be able to turn on and off lights on my controller PREFERRED to use SBUS to us hazards , side lights, main , high beam. Brake lights reverse lights. Your help is GREATLY appreciated. I hope you will find time to reply.
I have to look into something like this kit for my CC-01 FJ Cruiser. Is the rigid upper arms for your awesome ORV rear suspension upgrade in the works yet?
that is the old control unit....they sell different ones now, and these new ones are much more confusing, and there is 2x less connectors aswell. RIP, well iam still going to order it, and i hope i will sucessfully rig it to not the dim the damn front lights (they removed that switch aswell FOR GODS SAKE) before i order it, is the old version stil available somehow?
A quick question for you sir if you don't mind. I am fairly new to rc cars so I am starting off w/ 1/18 scale cars before I decide if I am going to take the plunge to higher scale models. My question is if these LED lighting kits are only for 1/10 cars? Reason I asked if because I am trying one from Killerbody, very similar functions as what you are testing but won't seem to function despite having everything connected correctly. I am trying to modify a 1/18 FMS Toyota FJ Cruiser so the head and brake lamps remain on and intensify with fwd movement and braking. Somehow, they all just very dimly flicker. Thanks in advance.
These will work on any size vehicle (so long as you can get them to fit) but they require a conventional 2 (or more) channel receiver. If you are running the WPL electronics, this will not work since there is no throttle channel to tap into. The signals will work but not the brake and reverse lights.
@@AMPROEngineering I found out the size their 2mm 2 pin jst's I already ordered some from AliExpress and if you've never heard of the site you should check it out I bought the light kit you like from there for $10 they sell so many good RC products on there

So was this the best one? Sorry I didn't don't have time to watch 5 videos at 15 minutes each. I quick summary video would have been ideal! Looking for 12 LEDs.
Well best depends on what is best for you. This one was good but not the best for me. The one in episode 36 is my favorite one. I think I have over 20 of them.
I have some LED lights and it come with a JST connector which confuses me. I've seen this JST on other things like a fan. But my question is where do i connect that JST plug ?
ahh ok, i will try that. JST plugs confuse me because you have "normal" futaba style plugs sometimes and those are just to plug in Ch.3 port. Thanks :)
You confused me and gave me a panic attack at the end of that video by holding up and showing us the wrong unit (dip switches on edge) suggesting we buy that one. I’d already ordered the one from your previous video (dip switches in the middle) Hope it’s as good as you say it is I will post my review on your last video of the kit in question

Sooo I get an email; ""AMPRO Engineering just uploaded a video"" So I say to myself "right on did he do the Brat lenses?" in my head.... Then I read "AMPRO Engineering has uploaded e39: RC Car Lighting Kit Review, PART 5 - "LED Light System"" And then proceeded to LOL literally at >"""PART 5 - 'LED Light System"""< At the "part 5" part mostly...- So I clicked the ebay linky and put one in my basket, then started watching this and thinking "I already have 1 flashy drifter crappy light doohickey and 1 of the Tamiya wannabees with 2 of the good/better (part4) lighting kits on the way..... I had just got off ebay from looking at bodies, most w/ light buckets and looking at separate rallye style light sets and etc...... I bet you save some people a decent amount of money doing these vids.
Glad you liked it! I have always been annoyed with how nothing is known about these units. It think it's odd how few LED's it comes with since the electronic portion is not bad.
I know this is an old video but if you look at 14:19 mark it says 3Racing. That is the brand for this light kit. Enjoying the series so far. Going to fix up my old Blackfoot soon.
It does but it is not listed anywhere as that for some reason. This is still one of the best "Cheap" controllers out there. I have 20+ haha!
You can find it very eazily under the "3racing led light system", you sir deserve to be a top comment.

Oh man, I totally hear that!
Loved this series on the lighting kits! Would love to see a series on the exhaust smoke simulation kits, and possibly the sound kits aswell!
I agree! I have a few more light set vids coming and I think I have one planned for the sound kit. Smoke kits are a good idea!

I know, I still run these. I bought 6 more last week. Oh so they changed it? Man I still never used that one. Just used the LED's.
I would send photos just for your reference/curiosity but no idea where to send them. Is there a Facebook page I could send via messenger?
